State Highway 1 to close Motorists can expect more closures along State Highway 1 next weekend.

T h e h ig hway b e t we e n Ngauranga and Thorndon was closed last weekend and will close once again on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 of November.

The closures will begin at 10pm and the motorway will re-open at 7am on Sunday morning and 5.30am on Monday morning. All lanes in both directions will be closed.

Despite the closure, Wellington Highway Manager, Neil

Walker said detours would be in place and everyone would be able to get where they wanted to go at all times.

However, he said people should allow more time for their journeys during these times.

“We’re doing everything we can to minimise disruption, which is why we’re doing it in the middle of the night during the weekend.”

He said the last motorway closures took place in August, and went like clockwork.

An old fairy tale comes back to life Continued from page 1 Twenty years ago Fiona, from Fiona Haines Dance Academy, put together a show based on the classic fairy tale Pinocchio, and this year’s show is set to be better than ever.

“We are doing a rehash of the very first show I put on, but we are also including ‘To the Circus’ which we have never done before.

“We have strong men, tightrope walkers, lion tamers and more, and it will be a very full and entertaining show for all ages,” Fiona said.

Students aged three to 18 years from both Karori and Brooklyn Studios are busy preparing for the up-coming production.

Senior students not only get to show off their dance skills but also have to learn how to act and tell a story with body language and mime, Fiona said.

“I am very lucky to have my mother, Katie Haines, on board as she was not only a ballet dancer and teacher but was also a drama and mime tutor so the girls are lucky to have her expertise during rehearsals,” she said.

Fiona said she has had great pleasure in teaching over the past 20 years and has had some

“You form quite a bond with them when you see them three to four times a week over ten or so years.

“I love it when past students pop in to say hello and fill me in on what they are now doing.”

Fiona said her dancers learn many skills throughout their time at the dance academy that are beneficial in all walks

of life.

“Along with the obvious posture, confidence and enjoyment, comes the skills you get from overcoming nerves from going on stage and sitting exams - dedication, discipline, reliability, time management, punctuality and giving everything your all and your best, she said.”

Fiona said this all the hard

work pays off when the dancers get to perform in their end of year production.

“Every year we put on a large production which is the highlight for all students.”  ‘Pinocchio’ and ‘To the Circus’ will be performed on Sunday, November 29 at 12pm, 3pm and 6pm in the Memorial Theatre in Kelburn.

Art for a good cause

For the fifth year in row, local artists are banding together to create original works and raise money for a great cause.

Three Karori mums Kirsty Fyfe, Adele Eagleson and Karen Hamilton-Smith decided five years ago that their art could contribute to Wellington charities.

ARTrove was set up by the creative trio and each year they, along with a bunch of other Wellington artists, put together a ‘pop-up’ art gallery where a percentage of the proceeds from sold paintings goes to a cause of their choice.

This year’s chosen service is the Wellington Free Ambulance, who’s free and efficient service runs all over the Greater Wellington Region and the Wairarapa.

The gallery, in the Asteron Centre Foyer across from the train station, will include a range of different art work, Karen said.

“There will be over 300 pieces of work with a range of types including watercolour, oil, acrylic, modern and abstract,” she said.

Fifteen artists will be contributing to the pop-up gallery, where a percentage of all paintings sold on the opening night will go towards helping

the Wellington Free Ambulance replace six ambulances.

The gallery will be opening for the six following days so the local artists get the chance to further display their work, and the public can continue to donate to WFA. The three mums got the idea for the pop-up art gallery

when they fundraised for their children’s school – Wadestown.

“We thought we could do a bigger one for a good cause,” Kirsty said.

Previous chosen charities have included the Child Cancer Foundation and the Surgical Research Trust.

Last year the group raised $8000 for charity through their pop-up gallery, and the ladies said their ultimate aim this year would be to raise $10,000.

There will be a live jazz-band on the night and wine provided

by Fairmont Estate.

“There will be music, wine, art, charity, artists and a whole lot of personality,” said Adele.

“The objective on the night is to raise money for a good cause,” she said.

Resident celebrates milestone

A local resident reached new heights last week celebrating her 102nd birthday.

Cashmere Heights Home resident Ivy Fernando turned 102 on Monday November 9.

The home surprised Ivy with a birthday cake at lunch time and after dinner her friends and family threw her a birthday party at the home.

Some family members even make the trip from overseas to celebrate the milestone.

Cashmere Heights Home manager Aileen Oliver said Ivy’s husband Punnyawana dressed in his best suit for the party and the family had a

great time.

“Ivy’s birthday was made very special by her family, friends and staff.

“It’s not often that we get to celebrate a 102nd birthday,” she said.

Ivy and Punnyawana have been together for 60 years.

The couple moved to Cashmere Heights Home earlier this year because they both needed extra support and they could still live together at Cashmere Heights, explained Punnyawana.

“We share a room but we have two rooms, so we use the spare room as our lounge for social gatherings.”

He said he and Ivy are happy they chose Cashmere Heights as

Karori’s own Bellyful volunteers had a royal outing in Auckland meeting with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Jacqui Jago and Amanda Batt from Bellyful Karori were delighted to attend the Town Hall in Auckland for a visit from the Duchess Camilla during her royal tour on Sunday, November 8.

The Duchess was met by founder of Bellyful Jacqui Ritchie and guided into a kitchen area to meet with a selection of Bellyful volunteers preparing meals in a cook-a-thon.

Camilla was given a Bellyful apron and took time to meet with each volunteer and discuss what the charity does, said Jacqui Jago.

“The Duchess took time to visit each of the tables set up for afternoon tea, provided by Karori’s Sweet Bakery, and met a selection of volunteers and mothers.

“She was very engaging and interested in the charity and the impact that being a recipient has had on the new mothers in the room.

Bellyful delivers precooked meals to families with new babies, and families with young children who are struggling with illness.

Local theatre shows A Child’s Christmas in Wales Christmas will come early to audiences of A Child’s Christmas in Wales, performed at Circa Theatre by prominent theatre actor Ray Henwood.

Written by Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas and dramatized by Ray Henwood, A Childs Christmas in Wales tells the nostalgic tale of a young boy’s romanticised version of Christmas.

In the one-man show Ray will play different characters including the protagonist’s school mates, uncles, aunts, school master and even the girls he used to whistle after.

Ray said the story is reminiscent of many children’s family Christmases so it is easy for most people to relate to.

“I used to read the book every Christmas, my son always loved it – friends and family always wanted to hear it,” he said.

Ray described how the story portrays typical childhood memories of the protagonist playing in the park opposite his house.

“Dylan describes it as if the park has never been explored before.

“There are secret societies, caves and dens.

“He tells the tale of a childhood before there was television,” Ray said.

Originally from Wales himself, Ray shares the same home town of Swansea with Dylan Thomas.

Ray has had a varied career in acting, from playing small parts in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, to acting in television shows such

as Gliding On, Close to Home and Shortland Street.

He has also done many television and radio plays, and of course, has spent the majority of his 60 year career performing in the theatre, being one of the founding members of Circa which opened in 1976.

He said theatre is a great form of acting because “you only get one go - nobody says cut”.

“The real test is when you can hear people listening.

“It’s a special quality when you know the whole audience is sitting in complete absorbing silence, that’s when you know you’ve got them,” he said.  A Child’s Christmas in Wales will run from November 28 – December 20, tickets available from Circa Theatre.

An Enliven wishing well A wishing well at Enliven’s Longview Home will see the wishes of Tawa elders being granted every month.

The wishing well concept sees residents putting wishes into the well and staff drawing out a wish on the first Monday of each month.

Longview Home manager Olwyn Cunningham explains the wishes range from the simple things in life to some exciting adventures.

“It’s all about supporting our elders to do the things they want to. Some of their wishes and things they never thought they’d do again and this gives us a chance to make it happen for them.”

Olwyn explains that while the wishing well is new to Longview Home, the concept is not.

“Like all Enliven homes, we embrace the Eden Alternative, which is a unique elderdirected model of care. Here, residents are encouraged to have their say in how the homes are run and in what they do.”

She says the staff are committed to doing whatever they can to support residents to continue doing the things they love, or to try something new.

“Enliven staff regularly arrange memorable trips and events for residents, so the wishing well adds a bit of excitement to it,” says Olwyn “It’s so good to be able to support our elders do the things they love again, or try things for the first time.”

The first wish drawn from the Longview Home wishing well belonged to resident June Fairless, who was craving whitebait fritters for lunch.

Three weeks later, June, along with her daughter, son-in-law and two staff members from Longview Home, took a special trip to a restaurant in Lower Hutt that had whitebait fritters on the menu.

“Mum grew up in Blenheim and her father was a keen whitebaiter, and in those days whitebait was so plentiful that it was often used as fertiliser in the garden,” Frances explains.

“When mum and dad retired back to Blenheim they were keen recreational whitebaiters and spent many happy hours down at the diversion with their nets, but the whitebait weren't so plentiful then, and on one occasion with only a small catch she made fritters allocating just three whitebait per fritter!”

Luckily, June’s special whitebait fritter lunch consisted of much more than three whitebait, Longview Home clinical nurse manager Michael Nestmann explains.

“We were very happy to have the opportunity to grant June’s wish, and we look forward to supporting many more of our elders to fulfil their wishes.”

Dear Ed, Re: “Last step for Johnsonville Bridge” (Independent Herald, November 4 2015): The Broderick road bridge and the two lanes off the motorway may be fine, but there have been many aspects which indicate a botched job for generally no gain overall.

The cycleway on Broderick road north side, near library, means 10 parking spaces have been lost. I

annually to keep our services running, and we only get 12% from government agency funding, so our appeal week is our major fundraising drive for the year.

On Johnsonville road, from the Z Service Station to near Broderick road there is a Flush Median strip in

the middle of the road.

Unfortunately, it’s not safe to use, being only 1.5 metres wide, whereas average car width is 1.8 metres.

The pedestrian traffic lights waiting area on Johnsonville road, Warehouse side, has three large puddles when it’s raining.

The opportunity to widen the constricted corner where Johnsonville and Moorefield roads join Middleton

road (by the Real Estate office) has been lost.

Lastly, but certainly not least, someone is going to be injured or worse on the Moorefield road pedestrian crossing, near the Medical Centre Pharmacy.

The metalwork chicane doesn’t work as it’s placed in the wrong position and the crossing is far too wide.

No quality controls on high density housing Dear Ed, Khandallah residents rightly concerned about Council plans for medium-density housing should be aware that that the current Council District Plan allows high density housing with no quality controls un-

der the guise of the infill policy.

Dwellings can be built to one metre from the boundary with pedestrianonly access past living spaces and bedrooms of existing dwellings. Such dwellings can be built without notify-

ing or consulting the neighbouring owners. The Council considers that this is acceptable and balances the rights of all property owners concerned.

Khandallah residents should be

very careful of any claims made by the Council about consultation and about quality control, and should demand considerably more detail of any proposals.

Karori Garden Trail back again

A Garden Trail will delight Karori residents as well as visitors to the colourful suburb - rain, hail or shine this weekend.

The trail which takes place every two to three years will allow people to view 12 gardens with a variety of shapes and sizes.

Barry Lovegrove from the Karori Lions said this year’s trail will be providing visitors with a wide range of gardens to take a look at.

“There will be a mixture of old and new – grand scale to cottage gardens.

“Some properties have trees that have been there for half a century or more, and other gardens will be modern and contemporary,”

he said.

Zealandia has jumped on board this year’s trail organised by the Karori Lions.

The wildlife sanctuary will feature on the trail as one of the 12 gardens, and Lions will be donating all proceeds made during the weekend to adding new facilities to Zealandia.

“We are still in the concept stage but the facilities may include an exhibition area, a place to get tea and coffee, bathrooms and somewhere to sit down,” Barry said.

Lions clubs worldwide will soon be celebrating their 100th year of existence, and each club has been asked to do something significant to mark the event.

The Karori Lions are hoping the

new facilities at Zealandia will coincide with their centennial year.

Barry said the Lions like to generate revenue for charitable causes with thousands of dollars being raised each garden trail.

In the past, funds from the garden trail have gone towards such charities as the Mary Potter Hospice, the dementia ward of Sprott House, and the local Youth Centre.

About 50 to 60 people help organise the trail which takes seven months of preparation.

Helpers act as garden scouters, gate keepers and support staff, Barry said.

The trail will go across Saturday 21 and Sunday 22, November and tickets cost $25 per person.

Scouts Fundraiser Ngaio Scouts are fundraising to redevelop their scout hall. Scout leader Neil Skene, said having a renovated hall would mean a “much nicer facility for the community to use”. The hall has been operating since the 1920s and has not been renovated for the past 50 years.

Since Bellevue Primary School’s playground was demolished last school holidays, the community has had to band together to fundraise for a new one.

Though the community was sad about the playground being condemned, the school is continuing to fundraise and still has many tricks up its sleeve.

On Saturday November 7 the Bellevue School held a market with raffles, baking, plant sales, karate demonstrations, stalls, and bubbles.

They also had a few Harley Davidson’s on hand to assist in raising funds.

Head of the fair committee Lorraine Laulad had an aim of raising over $1000.

Her expectations were well exceeded with $1877 being raised on

the day - another step towards the $100,000.00 needed for the new playground.

Principal Karen Hardie said the playground served as a social gathering place and the school’s 200 families miss it.

The old playground had been in place for over 25 years and the assessors gave the school no choice but to demolish it.

Episode 2 of Karori Event Centre (KEC) TV has been launched and looks at the many uses of the new community hall when it’s built.

It's the local kids that feature in this light hearted episode.

The architecturally designed hall will be a central venue for community classes and activities, fundraisers, fairs, movies, private functions, meetings, exhibitions and events. With a 16m stage and retractable seating (218) it brings with it the opportunity for performances and concerts close to home. It can also be used for civil defense purposes. Catering for Karori and surrounding Western suburbs it’s the one venue that is still missing in New Zealand’s largest suburb. Ultimately this community space is all about people, community members being able to connect through their interests. The Karori Community Hall Trust, a group of local volunteers, needs another $350,000 for construction of the Centre.

“Together we will make this happen for our community”, said KCHT Secretary Barrie Keenan. Donations will be gratefully accepted now, so the build can start and the Karori Event Centre can open in 2017. PBA

Bike to show support for White Ribbon

Men are encouraged to jump on their mountain bikes and show their support for White Ribbon Day this year.

The White Ribbon Mountain Bike Relay will take place this weekend at the Hataitai Velodrome and Mt Victoria trails.

White Ribbon Day falls on November 25 and is the official day when people wear a white ribbon to show that they do not condone violence in any form towards women and children.

This weekend’s event is organised to show support for White Ribbon Day and encourages men to show they do not condone family violence. It is a fun way to support a serious issue.

Janet Bagshaw, Coordinator of the TeRito Wellington Family Violence Network said this was the third year they had run the three hour long mountain bike relay.

Te Rito is a network of 32 agencies which work with family violence on a daily basis.

“The riders and teams see how

many circuits they can achieve in three hours. The start is at the Velodrome and goes up around the Mt Victoria trail.”

Janet said the record was an impressive 17 circuits in three hours.

“It has grown in interest each year. Last year it turned into more of a family event where people brought along their family and hung out in the Velodrome.

Janet said the day was also great for families, with Pedal Ready on the velodrome to give tuition to children as well as a bouncy castle for their enjoyment. There will be lots of prizes and spot prizes given out on the day, one of them for the ‘best dressed’ rider.

Constable Joeline Arundel from the Family Violence Team at New Zealand Police said this year teams from the Police, Ministry for Primary Industries, the Defence Force, The Fire Service and Wellington Free Ambulance would all take part in the relay.

“There is sure to be a little bit of competitiveness on the day,” Joeline said.

She also called on members of

the community to help out by volunteering on the day.  If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please contact Janet at TeRito@maoriwomensrefuge. org.nz The White Ribbon Mountain Bike Relay will take place on Sunday, November 22. Those interested can register on the day from 8am. $10 per rider or $20 for a team of up to four people. Cash only.

The pitter-patter of little feet recently echoed around the Johnsonville Community Centre as Plunket celebrated the success of the new classes.

The Johnsonville Plunket hosted a birthday party in celebration of the first year of the centre’s antenatal classes.

The class’s graduates as well as the new additions were invited to join in the fun.

Plunket’s Jo Chambers said the organisation was lucky to be able to borrow toys from the Johnsonville toy library, adding “We were also joined by Playcentre who helped entertain our little guests”.

“We had further support from Newlands New World who kindly donated a gift hamper which we gave out to one lucky family.

“It was lovely to see the community come together for our special celebration,” Jo said.

Johnsonville Plunket runs a variety of courses for parents and decided to introduce the antenatal classes so parents-to-be were familiar with Plunket before they had their little ones.

“We started running the classes to help fill a gap in the community.

“There was a lack of affordable, good quality antenatal classes in the area of our growing community and we wanted to provide classes that are run by midwives to give them a point of difference,” Jo said.

A new antenatal class begins every nine weeks and Plunket recommends parents-to-be join at around 20-25 weeks pregnant. The classes are held on a Tuesday evening between 6:30 and 8:30 and last for seven weeks, costing $120 per couple. Hot Shots Day Young players from the Khandallah Tennis and Squash Club recently enjoyed a MoreFM ‘Have a Go at Hot Shots Day’.

The 54 enthusiastic children attended the club event, in conjunction with Evolve Tennis Coaching.

The group of young tennis players aged three to twelve were able to play the game guided by professional coaches said Director of Evolve Tennis Coaching Susan Marris.

“Everyone had great fun and there were lots of cool prizes including racquets, balls, T-shirts and drink bottles,” she said.

Active Post Tennis Hot Shots is the national starter tennis programme for children aged 3-12 years.

Smaller courts, shorter racquets and softer balls mean children can play a proper game of tennis from the moment they step on court.

During the summer terms, the Khandallah Tennis & Squash Club are running ‘Tennis Hot Shots Community Play’ sessions every Friday 3.30-5pm where children can play tennis with guidance from a coach.

All equipment is supplied and the cost is $5 per child.

Wadestown fencer off to Australia

A Wadestown School student will be making his way over to Sydney to compete in a fencing competition after coming second place at the recent Wellington Parkson Cup. Eight-year-old Jacob Buxton will be competing in the Friendship Cup as part of the 2015 Australian Koala Mini Challenge Programme.

Jacob will be leaving this Friday to compete in the cup, staying over the ditch for about five days.

Hosted by the New South Wales Fencing Association, the competition boasts approximately 250 competitors from Australasia.

The competition covers Epie, Sabre and Foil for boys and girls across three age grades; under 13, under 11, and under nine which is Jacobs grade.

As part of the Wellington Fencing Club's

team, Jacob is the only competitor in the individual under nine foil competition.

He is also the youngest member of the Wellington team competing in the team challenge competition.

Jacob’s recent second place at the Wellington under 12 Parkson Cup potentially puts him at the top of under nine rankings for the Greater Wellington Region.

However for an official New Zealand age group ranking he needs to compete and place in the New Zealand nationals next year.

Wadestown principal Sally Barett said Jacob has done incredibly well.

“Jacob began fencing when he was five and he is so passionate about what he does.

“He is so engaged and he loves it – it’s very clear for everyone to see,” she said.

Sally said the school was proud of what Jacob has achieved.

“It is a very disciplined sport,” she said.

“I will get to play more competitive cricket.

“I am hoping to get better by playing skilful people,” Maia said.

Maia won player of the day for her outstanding performance – receiving a chocolate bar and bragging rights.

The cricket season got off to a flying start with a local 10-year-old girl taking a whopping five wickets in the first game last weekend.

Maia Williams who has been playing cricket for three years, played in the Onslow Cricket Club team against Porirua at Ngati Toa winning 88-52.

The crowd went wild as the young cricket star got five wickets, four in one over, including a hat-trick.

Maia said she loves the game because “it’s fun” and she’s good at bowling.

Maia practices once a week with her team and does extra practice at home with her cricket-mad brother and father.

Her love for cricket runs in the family with Maia’s Poppa supporting her at each game.

Maia now aspires to get into the Under 13 team for the Wellington region and said she will practice at home to achieve this goal.

The keen cricketer will be heading to cricket camp in the Hawkes Bay in January where she will play at a more challenging level.
