...Evaluating the ways in which social media impacts their life.

South Wellington Intermediate School students take part in a social media workshop.

South Wellington Intermediate School had the opportunity to think critically about their use of social media at a recent workshop. A team of educators from the Otago based Centre of Science and Citizenship worked with students at the intermediate to evaluate the ways in which social media impacted on their life. Throughout the interactive day, the students worked together to understand the way social media could be used positively. The negative aspects of social media were also explored, such as how social media can be used to distort situations, distance people

from the effects of their actions, and damage relationships. Students were also given the opportunity to engage with the philosophy of Aristotle, as they unpacked the concept of ‘friendship’ in order to think through the qualities of friendship, and whether an on-line friend can be considered a true friend. Philosophy teacher Karen Shuker said the school was lucky to have a day of thinking, discussing and learning about important issues in our digital on-line age. She said the day’s activities enabled students to consider how to be thoughtful in their use of social media.
