Toward a Better Understanding of the Universe By Jonathon Edwards

A Newtown man is using his love of the natural world to leave Australian audiences with stars in their eyes. David Klein, 31, is in Melbourne performing his award-winning science show, Toward a Better Understanding of the Universe. David will perform six shows in an intimate 30-seat theatre as a part of the city’s Fringe Festival. The show is an interactive and informal lecture which explains the wonders of the universe, from atoms to galaxies. David intertwines this with stories of growing up and what he learned along the way. “When I was 12 I was bullied. But one day I helped one of

those bullies understand some school work, I can’t remember. Then, another day when a bully started hassling me that guy said, ‘Hey leave him alone, he’s cool’.” David had often considered becoming a teacher and studied a Bachelor of Science at Canterbury University. He works at New Zealand’s film and audio archive, but he channelled his passion for helping others to learn into this show, which he first performed at the Wellington Fringe Festival in February. He says the idea came to him when he attended the previous year’s festival. “I saw a few shows in 2014 and thought, I could probably do that.” David originally performed

three times at a Tory Street arts space but each night they needed extra seats for the overfilled capacity, leading to the addition of two encore shows. His performance won him ‘Best Newcomer’ at the Wellington Fringe Awards. David has always been interested in science because “it can answer any question about the world”. A Melbourne Fringe Festival spokesperson says David’s show will fit in well with the experimental nature of the festival. “It is such a cool idea, and it is the variety of the shows which makes the festival so great.” He has plans to tour an adapted version of the show across New Zealand later in the year.
