BEFORE Mark Waters, from Upholstery Craftsman in Newtown, says he has had an interest in upholstery since he was nine-years-old. Mark says he was a young fella, growing up in Dunedin, when his father asked him to give him a hand with some chairs. The father and son took eight of the family’s bright red and bright orange chairs to be reupholstered – it was the 1970s. A week later they returned to pick them up. “I looked at my father and said ‘that’ what I want to do’.” Mark says when he was 14 he approached a potential employer who told him to come back at the end of the year and he might have a vacancy. At the end of the year Mark asked his woodwork teacher to purchase a bottle of Chardon. He went back to the
upholsterer and put the bottle on his table. Soon enough Mark was working in the industry that he continues to work in to this day. “I really enjoy the people,” he says. “The best part is watching their faces for their reaction when they pick up their items.” After working in Dunedin and then Petone, Mark went to Australia for a year when he met a man whose father owned the Newtown business. After borrowing money from his own Dad, Mark started what is now known as Upholstery Craftsman with $8,000 and a van. Somebody said he would last just three months – that was in 1988. Upholstery Craftsman is located on Constable Street in Newtown. The company’s letterbox is a well-known
red leather chair that passers-by often sit their kids on. Mark says the chair has been in the workshop of late for a spruce-up, but will soon be returning to its usual place out the front. PBA
