was a lot more involvement from students. Teams from the four houses included at least one from each year level. Previous events saw teams compete in a full-school athletics day, followed by a haka, wearable arts, and tractor pull competitions.

Can-Do campaign fills food bank By Aaron Meredith A trolley full of community spirit was handed over to the Wainuiomata Community Centre recently. NZCU Baywide has been running its annual Can-Do campaign over the past months. “We collected 545 food items this year,” says NZCU Baywide Wainuiomata manager Mani Malaeulu. The campaign was run alongside the Salvation Army and Mani says they were extremely happy see the involvement from the community. Wainuiomata Community Centre operations manager Tupou Kuma says that it helps
out a lot with filling their food bank. “Without this, our cupboards would be bare, we would have to turn people away when they need our help,” Tupou says. Missy Ditchburn and Linda Salter, from the Salvation Army, both agree that the campaign is a great thing for those who need the food. “The people who need help sometimes find it hard to ask for it,” says Missy. “These campaigns make it easier for us to help them,” she says. “The people who usually give and donate are the people who have experienced struggle before,” Missy says.

By Daniel Whitfield A former Wainuiomata Intermediate student has secured her spot on a New Zealand waka ama squad heading to Rio de Janerio later this year. Jaleighquar Rahiri will be part of a team of eight paddling in the junior J19K division and will compete against a number of countries at the World Championship Sprints event in August. While waka ama is the one of New Zealand’s fastest growing sports and the country’s reputation is second to none, Jaleighquar says to be named as part of the elite squad is a dream come true.
