Truck hits power pole DAVID HAXTON A 23-year-old man received minor injuries after an empty Downers water tanker he was driving south on State Highway 1 about 2.30pm on Monday struck a power pole 800m north of the Otaihanga intersection and rolled onto its side. ‘‘It has taken out a major northbound power line and caused some power outages,’’ Sergeant Mike George of Kapiti police said. ‘‘A very lucky young man. ‘‘We’re trying to sort out what caused the crash.’’

Paraparaumu Fire Brigade station officer Gary Johnstone said the 11,000 volt downed power lines on the ground and 22,000 volt lines hanging above caused a very dangerous situation. ‘‘All lines should be treated as alive when they are down on the ground. ‘‘There’s a perception out there that when the lines hit the ground, they are dead, but the only correct people to advise us and the public is the power authority. ‘‘We are continually amazed how the public have no respect for lines on the ground, in terms of

their own personal danger and danger to ourselves if we have to go in and remove those people.’’ He said the recommended distance from downed power lines was at least 8m. Meanwhile, Kapiti News office administrator Shar Atkin said after she had passed the crash scene, she was shocked to witness a woman driving while texting. ‘‘I was following her all the way to Waikanae and down Te Moana Rd. ‘‘She was swerving, her speed was erratic. I actually flashed my lights at her because I was so angry.’’

Corporate business committee chairman Gavin Welsh adjourned Thursday’s meeting for 10 minutes after becoming frustrated with comments from councillor Jackie Elliott. Cr Elliott said she wanted to ask the mayor why there was five councillors at the council table ‘‘blissfully unaware of the outcome of the CEO’s performance review’’. Mr Welsh said Ms Elliott’s comments were unacceptable and not appropriate for the committee. ‘‘Count to three. Do I seriously have to do the same as I do to my children? This is ridiculous.’’ Afterwards, Ms Elliott said it had taken the mayor five days to reply to her email only to say all councillors would be informed at the soonest possible opportunity. ‘‘We need to know,’’ she said.

CHIN UP

Ultra runner Jo Johansen had to pull out of the The North Face 100 trail ultramarathon early in the race after becoming unwell. She had treatment at Katoomba Hospital and has recovered well. She intends to take part in the New South Wales event next year. Jo won the women’s section in two recent ultramarathons, first at Tarawera, in Rotorua, and The Hillary, in Auckland.

STAYING LOCAL

Labour candidate for the Otaki electorate, Rob McCann, didn’t put his name forward for the region three Labour Party list conference held in Palmerston North in the weekend. Members of Parliament are elected either by local people who vote for an MP to represent their electorate or through a party list, which is chosen by the party. ‘‘For me, it was an easy decision to make. Our local members want someone who is committed to the region, not someone who just wants to get into Parliament. I want to represent my home. ‘‘Although there are many hard working list MPs in Parliament, I got into politics to represent my community. That’s what drives me'’.

THEFT

A blue Isuzu Bighorn, registration plate number OFUGLY, was stolen on Mother’s Day morning in Elizabeth St, Waikanae. It had a large orange/red colour car trailer on the back.
