Wild,wild weather Rescue services pushed

By Rhiannon McConnell As Wellington’s worst storm in 37 years wreaked havoc across the capital the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade was run off its feet with call outs, prompting many locals to call them the heroes of the storm. The fire fighters responded to 36 callouts over the storm period, the worst being a house fire. But Westpac consultant and volunteer fire fighter Craig Nicholson says they are not heroes. Rescue services hectic By Rhiannon McConnell Continued from Page 1. “It just comes with this. “It’s what we signed up to do.” Police Communications worker Nicola James agrees and says rescue services around the country acted the same way. “When it gets bad everyone just steps up.” The pair were rostered on the whole time and also attended a First Aid course on the weekend. “We had very little sleep,”Craig says. He says he is still feeling it. Nicola says it is taking her a while to relax. “You wind down and then you start hearing the siren in your head.” Despite being busy, she says it is

a really good feeling. “I think its quite satisfying.” She found the community spirit and backing moving. “You realise how close the community is and how much it’s appreciated and you feel useful.” One story she recalls is of a

lady who needed to get to a doctors appointment but her car was blocked in by a fallen tree. The brigade cut the tree to allow her car out. “That was quite cool.” By far the worst call out of the storm was the house fire, Craig says.

“That was the cherry on top that just wiped us out.” Nicola says having the local volunteer fire brigade is really important for the community. “If you can get there ten minutes before another emergency service you can make a big difference in that time.”

Students cook up a storm By Rhiannon McConnell When students at Wainuiomata High School found out how hard the volunteer fire brigade had been working they decided to do their part by cooking lunch to feed the troops. Cooking teacher Sarah O’neill says it was nice for the students to feel like they were helping. “Most of them didn’t know how to be useful. “This is one way they can.” Sarah says she had prepared enough food for a full class but not many students turned up on Friday. That is when she had the idea for them to cook for the brigade. Sarah says she thought the students might have been hesitant about giving up their food but they all offered it very willingly. “They were all really keen to do that. “It’s a good value to learn.” The NCEA level 1 class made quiches and hot soup. “Giving food is huge because it is what they would have had otherwise.”

From left Wainuiomata High School students Connor Grindlay, 15, Ree Peneha, 15, Sarai Malae, 15, Dina Jennings, 15, Freedom Povey, 15, cooked to thank the volunteer fire fighters.

Sarah says all the students had stories about the fire brigade and call outs. Connor Grindlay, 15, lost his fence during the storm. “We looked outside and it was sunny, then we saw the fence was missing.” He says giving the food felt

good. “It was pretty much a sacrifice.” Sarah O’neill says the brigade were very grateful when PE Teacher Peter Cowen delivered the food. “They were like stunned mullets.”

CREATIVE MEATS

Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade member Nicola James says the hot food made a big difference for the tired fire fighters. “Just knowing the community is supporting you and thinking of you was nice.”

Locals brave weather conditions to help “It was nothing really. “It was something to help the community.” Damon’s own home suffered damage with a flooded garage and leaking windows but that did not stop the father of three from facing the worst of the weather to help. “I didn’t really think of the dangers or anything.” He says he felt rapt after helping. Damon hopes the community spirit during the storm will help people realise what a great place it is.

By Rhiannon McConnell It was not just official workers chipping in to help during the storm, many locals braved the weather to give a neighbourly hand. Thanks to a local Facebook page people offered childcare, house and garden repairs and rides to those hit worst. Head storeman at MetroGlassTech Damon Rivers was one of those who helped. He and local resident Scott Parker tied down another Wainuiomata residents’ roof on Thursday night. Damon Rivers.

“At least this will bring some people closer to Wainui.” The power of social media came into play when Facebook page Wainui, swap, sell or free was used by local residents to provide updates, crys for help and answers to the crys. The page kept many locals up to date and provided an avenue for community support. Others nominated as local heroes included Scott Parker and Quintin Maru who helped with rides and home repairs.

Residents without power for weekend Coast Road residents went without power, phone and internet for parts of the weekend after the storm that hammered Wellington last week. The storm also caused a tree to fall over along the road, leaving locals with limited access. Coast Road farmer Shane Edwards said outages caused by the storm raised concerns about what would happen in an

emergency as there is no cell phone coverage in the area. “It sort of reinforces the issue that it would be good to get cell phone reception in rural areas,” he said. Mr Edwards said a downfall of working in the country was the slower response to power outages. “In this case you had 30,000 without power. The guys are going to fix it in an

area of 200 as opposed to 40,” he said. Mr Edwards said he got up on Friday morning after the storm to go door knocking and check on the neighbours animals. He said there were a few animal fatalities but the circumstances were pretty good. Power along Coast Road was out from Thursday night to Saturday night. Phone and internet connections were restored Monday morning.

Storm lifts roof off shop The Wainuiomata Food Lovers’ Market is feeling the effects of the Friday night storm after a section of their roof blew off. Duty manager Darren Hendricks said at first he thought it was the signage outside the store. “We heard a big bang and thought it was the signs outside, “But walking back we noticed it was the roof,” he said. A large patch of the roof was missing allowing heavy rain to fly into the store, forcing the store to close and causing damage to some stock and their office. Mr Hendricks brother Dean Hendricks came up with the

idea of patching up the missing part of the roof with signs from the store to stop the rain from coming into the store. The store opened for a brief period on Saturday, but closed early so staff could focus on the cleanup, which filled several rubbish bins. Saturday’s closure had an impact on business for the week as it is usually their busiest day when they also run a fresh fish market in the store. The store is selling fresh goods such as tomatoes and milk cheaper as a result of not being able to open on Saturday. Mr Hendricks said the roof will be fixed in the next couple Brothers Darren and Dean Hendricks family business lost it roof during Friday nights storm. of days.

inbriefnews Stop dumping rubbish - Mayor The community needs to stop littering, says Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace. He says too much rubbish is being dumped in Black Creek and surrounding areas in Wainuiomata and it has got to stop. “We should respect our environment and keep it clear of rubbish. “Dumping in the creek just creates problems for everyone including those in rural areas further downstream,” he says. Mayor Wallace says if residents see people dumping their rubbish in a public place they should call the Hutt City Council inquiry centre and included details about the sighting with identifying details including registration numbers. “We are a great community and we need to show it by taking care of our environment.”

Good response to submissions Hutt City Council received a strong response on its Draft Urban Growth Strategy with over 400 written submissions or questionnaire responses received from a wide cross section of the community. In general, the feedback supported the draft urban growth strategy for a more ambitious and proactive approach to development across the city. The City Development Committee will be making recommendations to Council on the process when it meets on 17 July 2013.

Free WiFi for CBD Lower Hutt CBD now has free WiFi. It has followed the success of the free WiFi scheme in Wellington CBD. To celebrate the Hutt City Council is giving away an Apple Ipad 2.

Wainui High students Bring It On By Emily Elliott Wainuiomata High School students are busy preparing for the annual Bring It On dance competition. The popular competition, usually held in Auckland, will be held in Wellington this year, giving students a chance to showcase their talents. Last year Wainiomata High School won the competition, and they have high hopes to place again. Dance and English teacher, Sahara Siale said the competition gives Wainui students a sense of pride. “The competition boosts the kids’ confidence and

helps them tap into the fact that they can dance,” Miss Siale said. “There is a lot of team work involved and the kids learn to be well disciplined.” Miss Siale said the competition is primarily hip-hop, but any genre can be added. Senior student Tuaupu Fonoti has been helping to organise the students and choreograph the dances along with two other seniors, Keanu Marsters and Leitu Lemau. “We had to take our own time from our school work to choreograph, it’s been a group effort,” Tuaupu said. She is excited about the competition and happy that so

many students have worked hard. “It’s all about showcasing out hard work. We’ve been practising three times a day, before school, during lunch, and after school.” “I’ve had to learn time management. Having time to learn every move and then teach it was hard,” Tuaupu said. As far as competition day goes, Tuaupu wants everyone to work hard and try their best, but knows that at the end of the day it’s all about having fun. Just under 40 students will be competing in Porirua in August.

Student leaders, Keanu Marsters, Leitu Lemau, Tuaupu Fonoti, and Dance and English teacher Sahara Siale are excited about this year’s dance team.

By Rhiannon McConnell A local beekeeper is bringing his popular honey to the Wainuiomata Market for the first time. Beekeeper Wayne Wild says he sold out of honey last year and thinks he will again. “People keep coming back.” Wayne’s business Coast Road Honey is popular with people all over the Wellington Region. The Coast Road resident has forty hives across three apiarys. He has previously sold his honey at farmers market but this will be his first time at the Wainuiomata Market. The retired lawns keeper says he does not even like honey but he loves beekeeping as a hobby. “The honeys a bit of a nuisance having to sell it but I do appreciate it because it pays for my hobby.” He has been beekeeping for the past 28 years. “Someone has to keep them going. “If there were no beekeepers in New Zealand there would be no bees and no pollination.” Wayne puts his hives on lifestyle properties to keep them as organic as possible. “It comes straight from the hive I bottle it and sell it.”

“It’s pure honey.” Wayne says people buy his honey for more than just a tasty treat. “I sell a lot of honey to people with allergies.” Wayne says his honey has manuka in it but also other plants. “Mine has a bit of everything

“I stayed indoors. It was ferocious.”

That was wicked, one hell of a winter.”

“We seemed to handle it pretty well in Wainui.”

Mick 90 not out - family the best By Rhiannon McConnell To live ninety years is a great feat by anyones standards but Mick Surridge says his family are the thing he is proudest of in his lifetime. “I have been fortunate to have a wonderful family. You wouldn’t get another one.” Mick was born in 1923 and turned 90 last Tuesday. “The last five years I’ve slowed down, I can’t do the things I use to do.” He celebrated with his family coming over for dinner. “When I see all the family here yesterday it was one of the proudest moments I’ve ever had.” “That’s all I wanted.” Mick was born in New Zealand and grew up in a family of seven boys. “I was brought up in a large family and had to dig in.” When the war came, six of the seven boys were sent.

Mick joined the the Navy. He has seen a lot in his lifetime but the war sticks with him. “I’ve had a war jammed in and I have been all around the world now.” After being in the navy he worked at the Post Office and was transferred to Lake Pukaki. “I was post master there and that’s

where I met the wife.” He says in those days they had only one telephone to share between 400 workers. He married Gwen in 1952 and last year they received a letter from the Queen for their 60th Anniversary. Mick moved to Wainuiomata and worked in a savings bank. He says he had to work two jobs in the early days. He was a caretaker at Woodhatten School as well as working at the savings bank. “You don’t get anywhere just sitting on your backside.” “We got there.” Mick says Wainuiomata was a place full of friendly people that helped out. “All the neighbours gathered around and helped.” “Everybody helped each other in those days.” He has spent the last 54 years in Wainuiomata. Mick says he would walk around all the streets and knew everyone.

He misses those days but is happy having a drink next door at the bowling club. “As long as the people say G’day Mick, I’m happy. “It’s being in that atmosphere.

Ambulance service key Providing Ambulance Services throughout New Zealand will always be a core activity for St John. That service is central to developing strong communities. This core service is, however, supported by their event medical services for everything from school fairs to major international sports matches.

The organisation says it is also playing an increasing role in meeting the broader health needs of New Zealand communities. To help people in hospital, they offer our Friends of the Emergency Department and Hospital Friends services, which provide non-clinical support to patients and their family and friends.

A flax hobby turned into a business for two local Wainuiomata mums. Forever Flax was started two years ago by Selena Shaw and Kristal Warbrick. “It developed out of a hobby.” The two friends say they are like sisters so when Selena taught Kristal how to weave using flax she was hooked. “I love the creations that I come up with and the fact it is

something from nature and getting the Maori culture out there,” mother of three Kristal says. She loved it so much she wove flax flowers for her wedding. Both women work, have children and study on top of the business. “We like to keep our plate choccer,” Kristal says. Forever Flax specialises in flax woven items such as flowers, bags, gift bags, baskets, canvasses, Muka Jewelery,

broaches, miniture flowers, baskets and kete. They have been selling their items through florists and friends. Kristal says the upcoming Wainuiomata Market is their first time selling at a market. “This is a great opportunity for us to get our name out there and get our product seen.” Kristel says they harvest flax from all over Wainuiomata. “We will even knock on a door if we see a beautiful flax bush and we have never been turned down.” Mother of four Selena Shaw says they make sure they tidy the bushes after they take the flax. “A lot of the bushes we harvest from just thrive.” She says she loves working with flax because of the natural fibers. Kristal Warbrick says they have bigger plans for Forever Flax in the future. “Our ultimate goal is to get our own shop for our crafts and other up and coming artists.” The friends say they are working hard to create enough product to sell at the market on July 6.

our average rate increase to below one per cent. We are also taking positive steps to attract business enterprise by renewing our business stimulus package. Current economic conditions are still challenging and council has done its very best to contain costs while improving community facilities and services to our residents and ratepayers here in Wainuiomata. Sportsville strategy A strong start on developing a Wainuiomata Sportsville has been taken with release of a draft strategy concentrating on community activities and grassroots club support. This follows a period of consultation involving football, Rugby, Rugby League, softball, bowls, croquet and cricket sporting organisations. I look forward to a positive outcome that will benefit the specific needs of our community here in Wainuiomata. Copies of the draft plan are available from Rawiri Evans 022 175 6854 or devan_s@paradise.net.nz Contact

Wainuiomata residents who responded to the Your Voice Your Choice community survey and the Colmar Brunton telephone poll contributed to the biggest feedback on a single issue in the history of the Hutt City Council. The response was truly amazing with more than 3000 from Lower Hutt responding to the survey and 501 involved in the Colmar Brunton telephone poll. Across the whole of the Hutt Valley there were 7000 residents who gave their views on the future shape of local government governance. The result was a clear direction for our council to shape our city’s response to the expected call from the Local Government Commission for submissions on reform for the greater Wellington region. One thing was absolutely clear – there is no appetite for a supercity. The preferred option by residents was to remain the same and focus on enhanced shared services. The alternative preference is to create a United Hutt Valley Council. Hutt City will now consider the results and make a decision that reflects the views of our community.

This is fantastic news for the rugby club and all the volunteers who work so hard to make the club such a awesome asset in our community. A personal thank you must be given to John Morrisey for all of his hard work over the years to make

Harriers brave conditions The worst storm in 37 years couldn’t hold back runners who faced the cold and wet to compete in the Sanders and Gough races held at Harcourt Park on Saturday, After all the atrocious weather we have had lately, it was an amazing turnout on yet another cold and windy day for it. With the Wellington marathon being held the next day numbers overall were a little down. Alan Carman, tackling an injury, tried his luck in the walking race and claimed

3rd place. Joel Carman finished 3rd in the Boys under 17. The interclub races are held every year between Hutt Valley and Wairarapa Harrier Clubs, with each club taking its turn to host. It will be Wainuiomata’s turn next year.

Results: Walkers trophy – 4.5km: The team placed 3rd overall; 3rd Alan Carman; 11th Rose Martin; Senior Women / Masters Women, Burns Cup – 6km: The team was placed 3rd overall; 7th Nikki Braniff-Jones; 9th Jen Stoupe; 10th Amy Williams; 11th Trish Coley; Boys/Girls

17 and under, Robbie Shield – 4.5km: The team was placed 3rd overall; 3rd Joel Carman; 6th Daniel Goldsworthy; 11th Natasha Goldsworthy; Senior Men/Masters Men, Sanders Cup – 7.5km: The team was placed 4th overall; 9th Paul Richardson; 18th Donald Coley; 20th Sam Czarnomski; 24th Warwick Pettigrew; 31st Stewart Clement ; Boys/Girls 14 and under, 3km ; 21st Jesse Carman; Full results can be found on www.sportsground. co.nz/wainuiomataaahc This Saturday is a club run from our clubrooms at Richard Prouse Park, Hine Road at 2pm. All welcome. Please contact Paul for more details on 970 7651.

Wharehinga says it was hard packing up Lesley’s things and knowing she would not be coming back. She managed to get third in hammer and fourth in shotput despite the adverse circumstances. Wharehinga says she took a lot away from the trip. “I ended up making life long friends.” It was Wharehinga’s first international competition. “I just tried my best and it ended up working.” Wharehinga plans to make the Oceania team again next year but her next big competition is NZ Secondary Schools in Hamilton later on this year.
