Lichtwark opts to play in Men’s grade By Charlene McKay Former Pulse captain Cushla Lichtwark has taken on a new challenge this year, playing goal keeper in the Men’s football league. Lichtwark, of Brooklyn, played for the Pulse from 2008 until 2011 and captained the team in 2009. Having retired from netball professionally she is now putting time into other sporting activities and when it comes to football, she has set the bar high. Last season Lichtwark represented the Capital side in the ASB National Women’s League. The team qualified for finals, but lost in the semis against Northern United, who went on to win the league. Before the season started this year she approached Capital Football to play in the men’s club league. She says this was so she could develop her game in a harder competition prior to the commencement of the Women’s National League. She started this season playing for Wellington United’s third team in Capital 2, but has recently made the move to Upper Hutt club to make the most of their one-on-one goalkeeper coaching. Last week she played a half game for Upper Hutt’s third team in Capital 4 and saved a penalty against Island Bay to help the team draw the game. She cannot guarantee she will play in the men’s grade every week, but she is in there with the other

keepers competing for game time. Lichtwark says she has found many differences playing in the men’s league. “The game is faster and the ball is coming at you harder. The men play more aggressively and also use more of an aerial game” She says there are skillful and good quality players in the women’s Central League, but the level across the grade is not the same as in a men’s grade. The 2013/2014 ASB Women’s National League will kick off later in the year. Lichtwark will be putting her hand up for the Capital side again, and will be sure to use her experiences from the men’s league come game time.

By Lydia Anderson Kyokushin Poneke Dojo members are speaking out on men's health to the Mt Cook and Newtown communities. The dojo is hosting two public seminar evenings this week with guest speakers as part of Men's Halth Week and hope to grow it as an annual event. Dojo president and shihan Alex Terris says he decided it was important for the dojo to partake in the national awareness week because it fits in with their focus on physical health. For Alex, who has been doing karate for more than 40 years, the importance of spreading the men's health message has really hit home. He says he has lost a few friends in the 50+ age group to early, preventable deaths.
