Students raise cash for Nepal

Hope School pupils showed they are developing a good social conscience deciding to donate the proceeds from a fundraising barbecue to the victims of the Nepal earthquakes. The pupils initially decided to donate the funds from the barbecue to a pest trapping group in St Arnaud after a school trip to Nelson Lakes earlier in the year. The pupils were so impressed with trapping being carried out by the volunteers

that they wanted to help by donating the $100 they had raised. However, they changed their mind, instead deciding to give the funds to international aid agencies working in Nepal after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the country on April 25. The pupils also organised a coin trail and dress-up day at the school last Wednesday - the same day as a second 7.3 earthquake hit Nepal - to

raise an additional $120 for the earthquake victims “We changed it to Nepal because they need the money more urgently,” pupil Hamish Powell says. “We will raise some more money for the trapping programme at St Arnaud another time.” Principal Dave Pritchard says he has been thrilled with the children “who have been the driving force behind the fundraisers.”

Paula’s

Congratulations Woody and Waimea Drilling Company on your 50th anniversary. We are most grateful for your continuing support to our society.

Richmond Academy The Richmond Academy at Paula’s Preschool offers children an advantage when transitioning to primary school. The centre’s Academy offers a fun and exciting programme for children while developing their independence, problem solving skills and laying down the foundations of literacy and numeracy. Sharon Gibson, a trained primary and early childhood teacher, provides an exceptional learning environment centred around the interests of the children. The team is excited to welcome Kelsea Sherratt, who has recently graduated with a Bachelor in Early Childhood Teaching is looking forward to working alongside staff and children, focussing on preparing our little ones for school. The Richmond Academy is unique in its approach to early childhood education. Smaller numbers mean the children have access to quality, individualised learning from three and half years of age. Recently a number of our children turned 5 and headed off to school with incredible skills in early literacy and numeracy. This has opened up spaces in the Academy rooms, so here’s an opportunity for you. Give your child the head start they deserve. Enrol now at the Richmond Academy.

Parent Testimonials Both of our Children are and were involved in the Academy programme. Our eldest is now at primary school, and not only did she have a head start with her learning, she easily slotted into the school routine and was able to make friends quickly and easily. Our son who is almost four is currently enrolled in the Tuatara Academy room. He really looks forward to going to “school” each day, which is cute. I think it’s the great relationship he has with his teacher, the intimate group of children his own age who are his buddies, and carefully thought out classroom activities. He is so eager to get involved! I am always recommending the programme to others. Sonya Sladen Morgan transitioned into school easily. The academy programme “promotes the love of learning.” Morgan has an active mind and the structure channelled his learning into the right direction to become a life longlifelong learner. When looking at preschools for our daughter, Sammy, we looked at many around Nelson, Stoke and Richmond. We chose Paula’s Preschool because of the enthusiastic, welcoming team and amazing Academy programme they offer. The teachers at Paula’s were always energetic and excited to share a wide variety of experiences with the kids. The excellent structured learning Sammy received during her two years in the preschool’s Academy class has put her in an excellent position when she started school. Che Robertson
