in pool play and in their quarter final, the team had a tough semi final match up against Rangiora High School, a team who had similarly steamrolled their opposition in previous games.
After getting off to a slow start Waimea were down 10 in the first quarter, but managed to even the score during the second period and take a handy lead going into half time. Some stellar team defence and smart offence contributed to the resurgence, and Rangiora were forced to take their leading scorer off with foul trouble. In the third and fourth quarters the game was predictably tight with both teams making scoring runs and the lead changing several times. However, with 13 seconds to go and with a sideline possession, Waimea ran a play and kicked the ball to shooter Amber Brooks who nailed the jumper with four seconds on the game clock, putting Waimea up by one. and had a chance to score but they fumbled the ball and couldn’t get the shot away in time, leaving Waimea the victors by one point, 58-57. The crowd and team erupted as they knew this was the team to beat. The final was a one-sided affair against Ashburton College and going into the second half Waimea was up by 30 points. The coaching staff were able to try some different combi-
nations and all ten players saw court time in the final. Ashburton came back in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough. The Waimea girls ran out eventual winners, 66-50. The team now heads to Secondary School Nationals in Palmerston North in the first week of the school holidays: September 29th – October 4th, where they will compete against the top North Island teams for the title of NZSS Champ.
