Touch rugby calling for junior teams

Nelson’s Lizzie wins coastal classic

Junior touch rugby is returning to Jubilee Park next month. The Waimea Old Boys summer touch module for primary aged kids starts on October 22. The club is now calling on teams to register for the competition, which

Nelson’s Lizzie Wesley-Smith was the fastest woman in Saturday’s Abel Tasman Coastal Classic, completing the 36 kilometre trail run from Awaroa to Marahau in under three hours. Lizzie has already gone sub-three hours in a marathon recording that milestone in Auckland in 2012 and she completed an equally impressive run along the Abel Tasman track on Saturday in 2 hours 54 minutes 50 seconds. She finished eighth overall and just two minutes short of Eveline Coombe’s 2001 record, which was an outstanding result in cold, wet conditions. Florence Van Dyke of Auckland was second in her first serious long distance race while Wellington’s Nicole Walker was third. David Fitch of Christchurch won the men’s race in 2 hours 38 minutes 38 seconds finishing ahead of Greymouth’s Ben Aynsley and early pace-setter Matt Pepler of Christchurch. No records were broken but the three survivors from the first race, Chris Gates, Colin Rolfe and Owen Rowse, all completed their 21st consecutive Abel Tasman Coastal Classic. The top 10 Nelson runners were: Nick Crocker, 2.52.47; Lizzie Wesley Smith, 2.54.50; Chris Gates, 3.09.16; Richard Bamfield, 3.24.26; Barry Davies, 3.27.58; Frances Adams, 3.29.22; Nigel Muir, 3.29.49; Anthea Lees, 3.32.18; Elizabeth Roberts, 3.33.29.
