Suburban Club’s last drinks?

It could be lights out for the Nelson Suburban Club after members were told last week that it cannot continue to operate in its current building, due to its “unsustainable” debt. That means the club may have to sell its Tahunanui Drive premises and either try to buy or lease a cheaper venue, or merge with another club. The only way it could stay in its current venue was the highly unlikely scenario where a donor came on board with a $2million, interest-free loan. Board chairman Ross Strawbridge told the members that the club was saddled with too much debt, taken on when the club expanded its premises in 2005 and again when it bought a car park to comply with a council bylaw in 2010. Last year the club told members that it had discovered that its IRD payments were not being made and it owed $200,000 in taxes. It also owed a further $100,000 to other creditors. Ross says since then the board

has worked with its bank and the IRD but servicing the debt means staying in its current building is no longer an option. “It is the intention of all members of the club, including the board and executive, to see the club continue into the future,” says Ross. “However, it cannot continue in its present format due to the heavy cost of servicing the bank loans and the continuing decrease in income.” He said there has been a 35 per cent decrease in gaming machine takings in the past three and a half years, an important source of revenue for the club. The Nelson Suburban Club isn’t the only club in the country facing difficulties and Nelson city’s own Maitai Club sold its building in 2009 after striking financial problems. Ross also addressed the recent “rampant rumours” that the club had been approached by a church to sell the premises and that it had not been paying its bills, staff or the IRD. He said all were false.

Science institute opens its doors Nelsonians immersed themselves in the wonders of science when the Cawthron Institute opened its doors for its fourth annual open day on Sunday. “Today is all about showing the public what Cawthron does. It’s bringing our science to life for everyone in the community,” says Cawthron Institute’s Jo Thompson. The open day included tours of the laboratories and research facilities, presentations and

displays from a number of Cawthron’s different scientific teams including freshwater, ecotoxicology, coastal science, aquaculture, food technology and bio security. There were also touch pools for children and a range of exhibits including hitech buoys, examples of natural toxins, didymo (also known as rock snot) and cyanobacteria or blue-green algae. After starting in 1921 through the bequest of Thomas Cawthron,

the institute is now New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation. Jo says it’s important for it to have a connection with the community. “For us, it is really, really important that the public feel that they can come in and learn about what we do. The science industry knows about Cawthron but it’s just as important that the local community know about us as well.”

PM: Education for teen parents works Prime Minister John Key was in Nelson last Friday, officially opening the Nelson Young Parents’ School and speaking to members of Nelson Grey Power. The PM fulfilled his promise to open the young parents’ unit, which is based at Auckland Point School, after the planned opening in February was cancelled when the Prime Minister couldn’t fly out of Wellington due to fog. He said it was important for the government to support programmes like it. “Studies have shown us that young women who have children and are left on their own are quite vulnerable, unless we intervene,” he told those at the opening. “Those studies also show that these young women do extremely well once they get support.” The Nelson Young Parents’ School was founded several years ago with huge support from the Nelson branch of Soroptimist International. Last year it moved to Auckland Point School and came under the governance of Nelson College for Girls. Auckland Point School is now home to a kindergarten, a primary school and the teen parent school.

She says she wants to go on to study accounting. “We spoke about the benefits and how this helps us and the stats around young mums and how vulnerable they are. It was good to speak with him.” On Friday afternoon the Prime Minister spoke to Grey Power members at the Nelson Suburban Club, where he outlined some of his party’s policies heading into the general election this year.

Busy refuge needs more help than ever

The Car Company received a shock birthday present last week when the Nelson Women’s and Children’s refuge dropped in with afternoon tea to say thanks for its fundraising efforts. Over the past two years, the Car Company has raised close to $40,000 for the refuge by dedicating the month of September to the cause. And workers at the refuge say it’s needed now more than ever. “It’s just skyrocketing. I’ve never been busier than now,” says refuge worker Colleen. “My hope is that one day I’ll be out of a job because we’re too quiet but it’s going the other way. It’s going up and up.” Refuge staff visited each of the Car Company yards in Nelson, Tahuna and Richmond with afternoon tea and a thank you card, which just happened to be the business’s 18th birthday. Reni Gargiulo, the refuge’s funding administrator, says the relationship is critical to what it does. “Without the Car Company and Shane’s passion, we would not be able to operate at the level we do.”

Founders Book Fair, June 3: After 25 years, the Founders Book Fair has achieved another great total for the development of the park. With a total of $127,000 they managed to make $3000 more than last year with roughly 4000 banana boxes full of books. Spokesperson Karen Clark says the success of the fair rests on the support they are given through the donation of books, the work done by their 70-80 “sorters” and the public who come to buy the books at the fair and ensure the continuance of Founders Park. Sustainable Scooters, June 3: Nelson’s Ross Mathews has had a number of people show interest in test driving his motorised scooter. The scooter is eco-friendly, made with plywood from sustainable sources and is powered with a rechargeable lithium ion battery. For more information on the ‘sustainable scooter’ or how you can contact Ross, visit his website at www. spectrumscooters.co.nz.

No alcohol for a month a worthy challenge

7

The Renovators NELSON LTD

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Ashleigh Rosie likes a drink. Not in an over-the-top, alcoholic kind of way, but the thought of going an entire month without drinking alcohol is still a “challenge”. But it’s a challenge she’s up for and is encouraging other Nelsonians to join her in taking part in the New Zealandwide “Dry July” promotion. Dry July challenges participants not to drink alcohol during the month and to raise money to support adults living with cancer at the same time. In 2013, 73 people from the Nelson/ Marlborough/Tasman regions raised $5649 for Kiwis with cancer. The money raised goes to Auckland City, Wellington or Christchurch hospitals. Fundraising for these hospitals provides day-to-day comforts for cancer patients, including new chemotherapy chairs, upgraded waiting areas, exercise equipment and complimentary therapy programmes. Ashleigh and her husband took part last year and while watching the rugby without a beer was tough for Daniel, it wasn’t easy for Ashleigh either, especially considering she works at a

When I heard about Dry July last year I thought that I probably hadn’t had a fully sober month since my late teens so I thought ‘it can’t be a bad thing to do’.” She says it went well and now that she knows what to expect, is hoping to raise more money this year. “Last year the main motivator was my health, this

Lions donate $2500 for 'Dad's new lungs'

Mike Corkill has received another shot in the arm, with the Richmond Lions Club donating $2500 to his fundraising campaign. The Lions announced their plans last week after a member brought the idea forward after reading about Mike's battle to raise $100,000 for a new pair of lungs in the Nelson Weekly. The fundraising drive has been called “Dad's new lungs” by his six children. President of the Lions club, Alex Robertson, says they are thrilled to be able to support Mike's cause and say the amount is far more than it usually gives to causes like this. “We don't normally give that amount of money away. Usually its $500 and a maximum

of $1000 but here we are. We think it's worth it.” It brings the total raised so far to just under $20,000 after successful collections in the Richmond Mall, a garage sale, donations from members of the public and businesses. The family are also hosting a quiz night at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms in Richmond on June 20. Mike says all donations mean a heck of a lot. “It's more than I could imagine. It just about brings you to tears really,” he says. “And I'm not one for crying.” Alex says the money came from

cutting firewood and from selling sausages at Bunnings. He says while cooking sausages last week they had Mike’s name on the blackboard, which lets shoppers know where the proceeds of the barbeque are going. One lady walked up to the Lions members and dropped a $100 note in the tin. “She said she didn’t want a sausage, just to donate and I think that’s fantastic. You talk about community support, there is a great example.” To sign up for the “World Championship Quiz Night” for Mike’s appeal email mikesnewlungs@gmail.com or you can buy tickets from the Richmond Mall information desk or the Nelson Weekly office on Selwyn Pl.

Air ambulance saves baby Olive Got a story? Nelson’s Beddek family is extremely grateful to the medical airlift services after the recent birth of their nineweek-premature baby Olive. At 30 weeks and four days into her pregnancy, Briony Beddek says she needed to be admitted to Nelson Hospital on a Sunday morning after her waters broke suddenly. “Nelson Hospital decided that we might need specialist care above what they could readily provide and by the Monday afternoon they had organised the air ambulance flight over to Wellington for my husband and I. “It was all a shock to the system, I was just starting to get comfortable with being pregnant and everything was going the right way. I certainly hadn’t considered that I wouldn’t be having my baby in the city that I live.” With her baby “adamant she was coming” despite labour-slowing medication, Olive was duly born that Wednesday in Wellington Hospital and two weeks later the family was flown back safe and well to Nelson. The Beddek family joins a growing number of patients

For stroke, head injury, cardiac, emergency child birth and multi-trauma patients, the recommended mode of transport to tertiary hospitals is by airlift.” New Zealand Airports Association chief executive Kevin Ward notes that the social contribution of an airport to its region can be less obvious than its economic role, but nonetheless has huge value. “In an economic report for the association last year, Nelson Airport stood out as making one of the biggest direct economic contributions from core airport activities – $37.9 million value added in 2012 – behind only Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch Airports,” he says. “But this is really only the tip of the iceberg. You can’t put a value on the access to medical facilities and the lives saved by the air network.”

Fresh out of jail Edward Wakefield set up the New Zealand Company. The Wakefield’s ripped off the Quakers, who were non-violent peaceful people. They didn’t have enough land for the Quakers who arrived some of it was swamp so they started that war to solve their land problem. One Quaker deserted, another was shot for not fighting. This week we've got our fingers crossed for good weather on Saturday for our open day at Nelson Police Station. We've put quite a bit of work into creating some interesting displays and will have lots of activities for people to get involved with. This is the first time there has been a national open day so police stations up and down the country will also be hosting events. In Nelson we'll also have a range of the organisations we work closely with coming along. This is a great chance for us to show you what we do and for the public to come and meet their local police. If you've ever wanted to see the inside of the cell block, but didn't want to risk your reputation doing so, this is your chance. If you're bringing your kids along we'd recommend you bring a camera as there will be plenty of photo opportunities. In the event the weather doesn't cooperate we will have to call the day off. Hopefully that won't happen, but if it's looking uncertain check out our Nelson Police Facebook page or tune in to a local radio station. I hope to see you all there.

Stoke company Absolute Wilderness can't keep up with demand after launching a new brand of freeze-dried meals that was conceived on a tramping trip near Nelson and then developed as a university study in Auckland. Andrew MacDonald and his father Grant realised there was a market for high performance freeze dried meals when they were tramping together in the Cobb Valley. Andrew later developed the concept for the Venture Fund Awards in his final year of study for a business degree at AUT University in 2011 and now the concept has become a commercial reality. "Grant and I were tramping together and he had one of his own freeze-dried meals he had made and I had a commercial brand," Andrew says. "We tried both and the difference was like night and day so that was when we decided there was an opportunity." Andrew subsequently developed a business plan for Absolute Wilderness for AUT's Venture Fund Awards and won $9000 for his proposal. The former Nayland College student had already won $10,000 in the inaugural awards in 2009 and now he is using those entrepreneurial talents to help turn Absolute Wilderness into a successful business However, Andrew says the concept would not have been transformed into a reality without Grant who is a Food Scientist and has developed their freeze-

Grant has a doctorate in "mechanisms for stabilising foods" and has developed processes for producing freeze-dried meals that "taste just like real food". Grant says the key to producing a high quality product is to use high quality ingredients, take care during processing, and to freeze-dry the cooked meals rather than mixing individually dried ingredients. Absolute Wilderness also uses ingredients from local Nelson suppliers whereever possible. The formula is obviously working because Grant says they are freeze-drying meals "24-7" and still can't keep up with demand. "We developed the range last year and launched in the middle of the year. Now we have a range of 14 main meals and we can't keep up," Grant says. "We even

came in on Christmas Day to do some freeze-drying and are already looking at moving to bigger premises. We have also invested in a lot of new equipment and freeze-driers aren't cheap." Last November Grant and Andrew joined forces with Nelson adventure racer Nathan Fa'avae who is involved in the promotion of their products. Grant says Nathan and his world championshipwinning adventure racing team Seagate are "perfect for R and D" for their new products. "Nathan has a good profile and knows the outdoors industry really well so he's very complimentary to our business". Andrew says their product is already being sold on line as well as by national outdoor equipment stores R and R Sport and Rollo's. They are planning to market their product in Australia next year.

Commercial property that ticks all of the boxes Level 1, 295 Trafalgar Street in Nelson is currently available for lease. This highly desirable property encompasses 294 square metres of prime real estate in the heart of Nelson’s historical precinct, just metres away from the Nelson Cathedral steps. 295 Trafalgar Street has recently undergone seismic strengthening and has achieved its target of 50 per cent NBS (New Building Standard). This building boasts two access points; the front entrance is conveniently located on Trafalgar Street and the back entrance is via Park Lane. The lobby entrance on Trafalgar Street is situated between Café Affair and Sotheby’s Realty which means it comes with the benefits of those and other surrounding businesses, retail outlets, cafés and restaurants. This area is exposed to a high level of foot traffic on a regular daily basis with people visiting not only the neighbouring businesses, but also the nearby 1903 site, the Nelson Cathedral and gardens and Morrison Square (formally Fashion Island). The building has both stair and lift access to all levels. An added advantage is that it also includes the lease of two car park spaces, one covered and one uncovered. You can choose to use these for your own staff parking or offer

them as a convenient option for visiting clientele. Being south-west positioned, the building takes advantage of natural light and sun. Take one glance out of the windows on this level one site and you will be captivated by the views over Trafalgar Street, Church Hill and the Cathedral Steps. The newly renovated building incorporates nine spacious offices (most of which offer that wonderful view) together with a central conference room, a kitchenette and two bathrooms. The opportunity to lease an area like 295 Trafalgar Street does not come along every day and the light modern feel of the office makes it a very desirable space for any business to operate from and a pleasure to work in. This rare and exceptional space will not be around forever, so if you are looking to relocate your business or perhaps looking for the perfect location to start your new business, don’t miss out on your chance to secure this excellent property. For further information, or to arrange an appointment to view the premises, please phone Lisa on 564 3691 during office hours 8am5pm Monday to Friday. Business Update. Adv.

Top dogs graduate from Ark Social media, generous sponsors and smart students and dogs has made the latest class to graduate from the Nelson Ark one of the best. The Nelson Ark rescues unwanted dogs and pairs them with at-risk youths in a programme aimed at getting young people back on track and training and finding homes for the dogs. Last week, five of the students and their dogs graduated from

the latest eight-week course at the Ark's headquarters at Stonehurst Farm in Hope and trainer Sue Walsh says all the students and dogs were top of the class. "This group of students would have to be the most capable we have had for a long time," Sue says. "They have done very, very well." Trustee and co-founder Karen Howieson says the latest course was also a success for the dogs in more ways than one. She says

all the dogs responded well to training and will make wonderful pets and, thanks to the Ark's new promotional campaign using social media, five of the six dogs have found homes. Karen says they started advertising for homes for the dogs at the start of the eightweek programme rather than at the finish. They also posted regular updates, including photos and videos of the dogs, on the Nelson Ark's Facebook page and got a great response from potential owners. "We had almost 400 likes on Facebook on this course and all the photos and videos were well received. We had Anna Hickman helping us with all the multi-media and she did a wonderful job. "We already have homes for

four dogs and a lot of inquiries for Jet so now we only have to find a home for Rex. It's been very successful." Karen says Rex is an enthusiastic threeyear-old mixed breed male who would make a great family pet. Anna was planning to post a video about Rex on the Ark's Facebook page last weekend. Student and Jet's trainer Sara Kaiser says Jet is a "really wonderful dog" and she will be sad to see him go. "He has really improved so much and I'll miss him. I get all teared-up when I think about him going but it's so nice knowing that I have helped him." Karen says new sponsorship from the private sector, including cosmetics store Lush and Survivor Scooter, to compliment funding from the Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council also contributed to the success of the latest class.

THE AGE OF HAWKERS In the 19th and early 20th century, doorstep salesmen were regular callers. Jack Tomlinson recalls childhood years spent on Tarndale Station, Molesworth. He says two hawkers, Harry Halcott and Ted

Merlan, called three times a year each with four packhorses. They offered clothes, boots, jewellery, medicines, cocoa, tobacco, matches and a score of other essential products. He says the hawkers provided an exciting diversion in the 1890s.

The Super 15 rugby competition has taken a three week break during the June All Blacks test matches, which means our regular tippers are also taking a break.

Last week’s solutions

A Nelson Giants home game at Saxton Stadium on Saturday night meant an early start for some Nelson netballers on Saturday. The first round was moved forward an hour with the first games at 8am. The Grade 5 game between Suburban Black and Waimea College C was a hard-fought encounter, and while there were some great patches of play, there was a bit of scrappy play that crept in. It was the college team who had the better start, with their feeders Megan Stack and Laura Bingham supplying the shooters with an abundance of quality ball they went into the first break with a 7-5 advantage. Suburban introduced Brittany Jacobsen at goal shoot which immediately increased their conversion rate. Brittany quickly formed an effective partnership with goal attack Holly Turnball who was doing a power of work out front. The score was locked at 13 apiece at the major break. Waimea rallied in the third period to outscore their more experienced counterparts

always shown plenty of speed, Kristie says the trotter is only just starting to fulfil her potential and they are now considering an Auckland campaign next month. "She has always had so much ability but often ruined her chances by breaking in the running," Kristie says. "We have made a few adjustments to her gear and her farrier Brian Biggs has done a great job on her feet and that seems to have made all the difference." Kristie has enjoyed a successful association with Sunchita's family, recording her first winning drive on Sunchita's dam, Carmenchita, at Nelson in 1999. Carmenchita's first foal Ruby N Diamonds won three races for the Hills while her fourth foal De Real Diva has won one race and there could

Richmond's Tom Fox and Brian Johnson's Iwannabebig finished fourth in the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Winter Cup Prelude on Friday and fifth in the Cup won by Fifth Edition on Sunday. Fifth Edition started as favourite for the 3000 metre feature race after charging home for second in the Prelude on Friday. Waimea West owner-trainer Brian Hill had one of his most memorable days at Richmond Park when he completed a double with his talented trotter Sunchita at the Nelson Harness Racing Club's winter meeting on Sunday. Brian lined up Sunchita to emphatically win the Town and Country Vets Handicap Trot in a record time on the first day of the meeting on Friday and she backed up again on Sunday to take out the Tommy Behrns Handicap Trot. Maddison Hill, who recorded his fourth career win from 78 starts on the first day of the meeting, was also bred by Brian and is owned by Brian's daughter Kristie and John Donaldson and Chris Chalmers of Christchurch. Sunchita has now won six races and just over $44,000 in stakes for Brian, who co-owns the six-year-old Sundon mare with Kristie. Although Sunchita has

The fishing around Nelson has been on the slow side for a while now with snapper moving to the deeper water over winter. There is still the odd big moocher hanging around and those keen enough to put the time in, will get rewarded. Good gurnard can be found in Delaware Bay and out wide in Tasman Bay now. Don’t forget to set your flounder net around the estuaries and inlets as good numbers are also showing up. Last weekend’s forecast predictions for great weather saw a steady stream of boats leaving Nelson and descending on Okiwi Bay in anticipation of some great days fishing. The boat trailer park was bursting at the seams by mid Saturday morning as everyone headed out far and wide. Those with the bigger boats sought out D’urville Island and Stephens Passage. There were a good number of kingfish, groper and snapper caught. Shimano Bottom Ships and Lucanus slow jigs have worked well to get some really big snapper in Stephens Passage and at the top end of D’urville. Blue cod were also in abundance. A group of keen Dawnbreakers also headed over the other hill to West Haven where the waters were also calm and tried their luck. They were

well rewarded for the long journey by catching some mega groper weighing up to 80lbs. Along with some big blue cod. Kenepuru was also targeted by a Dawnbreaker family over the weekend. They were even brave enough to stay there overnight on the boat, despite the low temperatures. But patience is always the name of the game in the winter and after getting through the spikey dog brigade they struck gold. Straylining split pillies and small salmon, brothers Jarrod and Kaleb McKay landed 18 and 20lb snapper respectively. It is worth noting that they had many good strikes without hookups and in one instance let the reel free spool flat for about 45 seconds. This may sound like a long time but the fish were quite picky, only seemingly holding the baits and dropping them if they felt any resistance. Probably due to the colder water, which in turn slows down their metabolism rate and the eagerness to smash a larger bait. The secret was to cut baits in half, wait for the initial run, stop while they munched the baits and strike on the second run. Sometimes it can take a bit of trial and error to work out what mood the fish are in, but the results, as in this case can be quite spectacular.

Brothers Jarrod and Kaleb McKay with their 18 and 20lb snapper caught stray lining in Kenepuru last weekend.
