Sport Miya doesn’t drop a shot to sweep field „„ By Gordon Findlater RUSSLEY’S Hiroki Miya did not drop a shot when he powered his way past 108 of the country’s top young golfers to win the North Island under-19 championship in Hamilton at the weekend. Miya didn’t register a single bogey through 54 holes on his way to an eight-shot victory. Rounds of 68, 68 and 67 to finish at 13-under even had the 17-year-old in awe of himself, describing the win as the perfect start to the year. “It was pretty cool to string together rounds like that,” said Miya. “I haven’t won by that kind of margin in a big tournament before. Everything was on and all parts of my game came together.” Australia is the next destination in Miya’s journey towards one day turning professional. He will play in the Avondale Amateur in Sydney starting next Tuesday. It will be the biggest amateur tournament Miya has played in, with entries for the amateur ranking event from as far as England and Switzerland. Dewar's White Label Scotch Whisky

Following the tournament in Sydney, Miya will return home where he hopes to qualify for the New Zealand Open with the first stage of qualification at the Christchurch club on January 29. Wither Hills 750ml (excl Pinot Noir)

Sensei’s group one bid „„ By Gordon Findlater THREE-YEAR-OLD Sensei will revert to sprinting in a bid to win his first group one race in the time-honoured Telegraph handicap at Trentham on Saturday. Trainer Michael Pitman says the colt’s wide barrier draw (13) “isn’t the best in the world” for the $100,000 1200m race. Pitman was hopeful Sensei would deliver him an elusive group one win in the 2000 3YO Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton in November. But he finished fifth. At his most recent start, Sensei was caught wide and overraced in the group one Levin Classic (1600m) on Saturday. He finished eighth. Pitman, who trains the colt with his son Matthew, believes the Telegraph distance will better suit Sensei. “He raced really keen in the 1600m race on Saturday so it’s in our mind to run him back in the 1200m,” said Pitman. “This the best distance for him. Danielle Johnson is riding him. He’s only got a light weight and he’s very well in himself so
