Santa letters thrill pre-schoolers

In Brief

„„ By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CHILDREN across Canterbury received a Christmas surprise in the mail – a personalised letter from a special man in a big red suit. Letters from Santa Claus have travelled all the way from the North Pole to children in Canterbury in response to the children’s wish list requests. The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery based in West Melton was one of many pre-schools and primary schools in New Zealand to receive the letters. The pre-school’s inventors, adventure and navigator classrooms had their Santa letters handed out to them at their Christmas concert recently. With a bit of help from New Zealand Post, Santa sent 73,000 letters to children in 1102 schools and early childhood education centres across the country. The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery owner Tracy Summerfield said the children were “blown away” and appreciated the gesture from NZ Post. She said the opportunity for children to write their letters to Santa was great for their literacy skills. Hatchimals, dolls, toy tractors, trucks, racing cars

But as Santa reminded the children in his letter: “Christmas is more than just about presents. It’s about celebrating with your friends and family.” NZ Post has been helping letters get to and from Santa for the past 19 years. A NZ Post spokeswoman
