McLachlan swims to medals South Brighton athlete eyes up world stage

SPORTS

„„ By Andrew King SOUTH NEW Brighton’s Samantha McLachlan took out four medals in the pool at the Special Olympics New Zealand national summer games in Wellington. The 21-year-old won gold in the 25m butterfly, silver in the 25m and 50m freestyle and bronze in the 4x25m medley relay. Her mother, Hayley, said she has loved swimming since she first got in the pool as an eightyear-old. “She took the event very seriously and trained about four times a week in preparation for it with others at the Graham Condon pool,” she said. Samantha wants to head to a world games event at some stage. “That is her goal,” she said. She is also learning to become a swim coach through her trainer, Brid Collins. She was one of a number of Christchurch athletes to win medals at the event. •Indoor bowls Kerry Horsham, Linwood, and Carolyn Middleton, Somerfield, silver in division

„„ By Andrew King SHIRLEY BOYS’ High students Layton Cahill and Devin Pullyblank have been selected to attend the AFL New Zealand Academy. They will join more than 100 others from around the country at Northwood Park to hone their AFL skills over an eight-week period between February and April. Academy athletes will participate in skill development, athletic testing and measurement, gameplay and personal development. Canterbury Australian Football League president Steve Langridge said the selections provide a firm base from which the young players can learn the important skills of kicking accurately, hand-balling and ground positioning. For the past two years St Bede’s College, Papanui High, St Thomas’ College and Shirley Boys’ High have competed in different age groups in a nine-a-side competition for the AFL Cup. There are four AFL clubs in Canterbury, University Cougars, Eastern Blues, Mid-Canterbury Eagles and the Christchurch Bulldogs.
