Bid to avoid wheelie bin confusion WHEELIE BINS will be emptied a day later than normal on Christmas and New Year’s Day as changes to the kerbside collection service are rolled out. Confusion over when bins should be put out if a collection day falls on a public holiday has prompted changes by the city council. Collections will continue as normal on all public holidays except for New Year’s Day, Easter Good Friday, Anzac Day and Christmas Day. On those public holidays, wheelie bins will be emptied the day following the normal collection day. “The past arrangements where some collection days were moved to the Saturday before the normal collection day and others moved to the Saturday after, caused some confusion and frustration for many of our residents,’’ said city council solid waste manager Ross Trotter. “As Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Monday this year, this means the Monday collection will move to Tuesday, the Tuesday collection will move to Wednesday, the Wednesday collection will move to Thursday,
By Sophie Cornish THE CITY council has been threatened with legal action if homes in South New Brighton are damaged in a flood. The South New Brighton Residents’ Association has issued a formal notice of liability to the city council, claiming it has failed to install proper flood protection north of Bridge St and south of Owles Tce. The notice means if a flooding event does occur, the association could take the city council to court and may find it liable for damages. A city council spokeswoman said it does not accept it would be liable if the area is flooded. “The council will not be making any changes to its current process as a result of the notice of liability. The council considers its recent decisions provide a satisfactory way forward for addressing current flooding issues,” she said. But association chairman Hugo Kristinsson believes the city council could be held liable under the Land Drainage Act and Soil, Conservation and Rivers Control Act.
