Contemporary works feature at annual art event
Today, October 26, marks the start of the annual four-day Art in a Garden event at Flaxmere, near Hawarden in North Canterbury. This spectacular garden, which has been named as a Garden of National Significance by the New Zealand Garden Trust, provides the perfect backdrop for the springtime art exhibition. This is the 15th year the event has been held, with the works of more than 90 contemporary New Zealand artists being featured. As always, it covers a broad spectrum of artworks, including large-scale installations, paintings, photography, prints, ceramics, glass and jewellery.

There are two guest artists exhibiting. The first is painter Amelia Guild, who grew up on High Peaks, a high country station in the upper Rakaia Gorge. After leaving home for study and overseas travel, she returned to her roots in the country, and her work demonstrates her love for farm animals, including cattle, deer and farm dogs.
While strolling around the extensive range of exhibits, visitors will be treated to live music on each of the four days, starting at 11am, and finishing at 2pm on the first day and 3pm on the remaining three days. Picnic lunch boxes, local wines, tea, coffee and dessert treats are available at the streamside café. The event will raise funds for St John Amuri through gate sales, sales of children’s paintings and a raffle with three prizes to be won. First prize is a wall tile by ceramicist Christine Thacker, entitled Waiheke Island 2009. An established ceramicist with an international reputation for innovative form and approach to medium, Thacker was born in New Plymouth in 1953 and now lives in Herne Bay, Auckland. She has been a practising artist since 1974. The second prize is two nights’ accommodation for two people at Village Lake Apartments, Hanmer Springs. The third prize is a Harris Meats meat pack and two Ravensdown vouchers (each for one 40kg bag of Nitrophoska).

A film producer’s ‘remarkable’ project very ‘late career move’ – I was 62 when we started the project and 65 when we finished.
Were there any particular challenges to overcome? I had a few steep learning curves to climb, and finding funding is always a challenge. But we had Sheila’s resilient spirit to inspire us to keep going. Christine Dann, left, with Sheila Natusch on location while making the film.
Banks Peninsula resident Christine Dann, who is both a writer and an environmentalist, took on the role of producer for the New Zealand film, No Ordinary Sheila. The film tells the life story of historian, illustrator and writer, the late Sheila Natusch, who died on August 10 at the age of 91, just days after the film was premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival. Forward 50 talks to Christine about the project.
What drew you to research the life of Sheila Natusch? Encouragement from the film’s director, Hugh Macdonald! But I had already used some of Sheila’s books (on maritime history, native plants, southern New Zealand, and foraging) as reference works when working as a researcher for TVNZ’s Natural History Unit in the 1980s, so I already knew what a great writer and illustrator she was. After I met her I found that she had an interesting life story and a great personality as well.
You have described her as
‘remarkable’. What were her particular qualities you saw as remarkable? She was an extremely determined and resilient woman – essential qualities for her to be able to achieve what she did at a time when higher education and professional work for women was not common or easy. She was also exceptionally creative and skilled with words, and with her brush and coloured pencils.
How did your research on her life lead to your being asked to produce the film about her? I was already working with Hugh Macdonald as his producer, so it was more a matter of picking up the research task as well – but I was already an experienced researcher and I love doing it.
Was that the first film you have produced? It was the first feature documentary for cinema release that I have produced. A

Bones are designed to be light, strong and have some flexibility. They provide structural support for our bodies and are involved in the production of blood cells and mineral storage. While we generally think of osteoporosis as being a disease of old age, as this is most commonly when it is diagnosed, the ground work in preventing the onset starts well before then.

Lifelong interests pursued in retirement
By Christine de FeliCe For many people reaching retirement, stopping work brings the opportunity to take up new pursuits and interests. But for nick ledgard of loburn, it has meant a continuation of two lifelong interests – trees and the environment. now 72, nick started his working life as a trainee with the Forestry research institute (now sCiOn), where he remained until retiring in 2011. Most of his working life was spent in rangiora and Christchurch, where his role as a scientist for the institute involved the growing and management of trees, both native and introduced, in hill and high-country environments. “i ended up working with wilding pines, that was in the 1980s, and i still do,” says nick. “i’m still actively involved in wilding pine control. i’m also interested in farm forestry, with trees being grown for amenity, shelter and erosion control, not just for commercial interests.” As a specialist in high-altitude forestry, nick became involved with sir edmund hillary’s himalayan trust, spending 20 years with the organisation supervising the reforestation programme in the sagarmatha national Park in nepal for the benefit of the local community. The main focus of the project was nurseries and outplantings, with a full-time staff of six local people. he has been a member of the new Zealand Farm Forestry Association for 40 years, with his knowledge and experience of the sector being passed on to new generations through his teaching at the school of Forestry at the University of Canterbury. students are also shown the practical side and the process of growing trees at nicks’s own property, where he has eight hectares planted in trees. together with a colleague, he also manages a 380ha wilding forest near lake Coleridge. As with trees, nick’s interest in the natural environment also began at an early age. As a schoolboy in Auckland where he grew up, nick became interested in birds after his brother became involved in a local bird club. When he came to Christchurch in 1972, nick joined the new Zealand Ornithological society and his fondness for birds has continued. Much of his time, especially during the summer months, is spent actively involved in the work of the Ashley-rakahuri rivercare Group, and he has been the chair since 2004. Formed in 1999, the group’s aim is to
protect and enhance the status of native birds inhabiting the Ashley riverbed. the main species are the wrybill, which is the only bird in the world with a sidewaysturning bill, and apart from a few pairs in Otago only breeds on Canterbury’s braided riverbeds, plus the endangered black-fronted tern and the black-billed gull. the work of the group involves predator control by trapping, and weed control, as the birds must have open shingle on which to nest. As well as stoats, weasels, ferrets, rats and feral cats, hedgehogs also endanger the birds by stealing their eggs, nick says. “human disturbance is another problem, especially during the breeding season, so we put signs up to alert the public, and we keep an eye on the birds. Our work has been very successful. there was a decline in numbers previously, but most species are coming back up, with today’s populations in considerably better shape than they were in 2004.” this success prompted interest from people living in areas around other braided rivers, nick says, and following a seminar held in rangiora in 2007, an umbrella group, Braid inc. or Braided river Aid, was formed to facilitate similar activities elsewhere. however, while these groups are playing an important role in species conservation, nick believes the government’s target of a predator-free new Zealand by 2050 will be extremely hard to achieve. As you would guess, nick is very much an outdoors man. “i’ve always enjoyed being outside, and spending minimum time at a work desk in front of a computer.” Aside from his teaching and volunteer work, he is a member of the rangiora tramping Club and the tuesday Walkers, and up till he was nearly 50 he took part in triathlons. For anyone who has retired, nick believes it is important to stay as physically and mentally involved in activities as they can. “you need to pursue your interests, whether that’s being physically active or sitting reading a book. Put yourself in a positive frame of mind and unless you have no choice, try not to focus too much attention on health issues.” nick’s wife enjoys her golf, and is also involved in volunteer work. the two share their loburn property with 40 sheep, chickens and a cat.
