Wagner outlines plan to win ‘contest of ideas’ THIS ELECTION is a contest of ideas. Every day of the campaign, National has been rolling out policies to ensure New Zealanders know about our plan to take Christchurch and the country forward. Our plan supports growth, backs businesses, focuses on more jobs, lifting household incomes, and providing a safety net for those in need. The strong economy, backed by Nation-

Nicky Wagner al’s successful plan, means we can build on our already comprehensive support for families and households. Here’s just a few of our policies: Those on the average wage will get $1000 a year under our family incomes package – that’s about $26 a week for more than 1.3 million working families. It will also benefit about 750,000 superannuitants and 41,000 students. Our parents and newborns package will support families to grow and stay healthy, while also putting more money in their pockets with 22 weeks’ paid parental leave. Cheaper GP visits will benefit 600,000 more low income Kiwis and, by lifting elective surgeries to 200,000 a year, we’ll ensure access to life-changing operations – like hip replacements – for thousands more New Zealanders. National is focused on making our communities safer. We’re clamping down on crime, holding offenders to account and breaking the cycle of offending. We’re pumping half-a-billion dollars into the police to put more officers on the street and work toward our goal of making New Zealand the safest country in the world. National is also deeply committed to getting Christchurch back on its feet following the quakes. The Government has spent more than $14 billion on the rebuild so far, and that’s forecast to rise to more than $17 billion by 2021. This year alone, we’ve opened three new schools, completed the $2.2 billion horizontal infrastructure repair programme, unveiled the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial, announced a contract to complete the design and construction of the Convention Centre, put forward $120 million for a new multi-use arena, committed to a new specialist mental health facility, and handed over 90,000 sq m of residential red zone land for community projects. Also, last week’s decision by the Anglican diocese to accept the Government’s offer to reinstate Christ Church Cathedral was a real thrill and a huge leap forward for our city. As the Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration, Christchurch Central MP and a proud Cantabrian, I have and will continue to do my best for Christchurch – the city of opportunity. •Nicky Wagner is Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration
