Fuzhun members Gideon Valavala, Tasipale Valavala, Michael Mose, Loutoa Osai, Temuera Hay, Josh Mosa’ati and Keenan Jarvis will be joined in the final by Christ’s College band Run77. The final will take place in Auckland on September 2. Fuzhun won last year’s regional final. Run77, made up of Angus
Mossman, Robert Rolleston, Henry Phelps, and brothers Angus and George Murray, won the Canterbury final. Bands from across the country competed in regional competitions from May to early July. The regional finalists then made 12min videos performing their original music. Those videos were judged by a panel made up of New Zealand musicians. •Turn to page 4

By Sarla Donovan A COSTLY solution to get rid of midges in Bromley was scheduled to be discussed behind closed doors last night. Coastal-Burwood Community Board and city council staff were to meet to discuss costings for installing a UV plant in the Bromley sewage treatment plant. It could cost $3000 daily in power charges. For years, Bromley residents have been surrounded by armies of midges during the summer months, in what has been described by board chairwoman Kim Money as being like a “biblical plague.” Bromley resident Janet Profit is one of those who has been pleading for action. She said she did not know the meeting was taking place and was disappointed not to have had any updates from city council staff or board members. Two months ago, city council staff were asked to come back to the board with short and long-term options to try and solve the problem. •Turn to page 3

GOOD TO see the authorities have moved speedily and sorted out the danger to Shirley Primary School kids (page 3). The school had complained to the city council and local community board because many vehicles were not stopping for the red light on the pedestrian crossing by the school. This a real Christchurch-thing in my view; for some reason many people behind the wheel here are either colour blind or simply don’t know that red means stop. It’s the same for zebra crossings – generally you take your life into your own hands if you step out. Anyway, the phasing on the Shirley Rd lights has been changed and this seems to have worked the oracle for the school. Now all Bromley residents want, is help to sort out the midges (see page 1). – Barry Clarke

Motorists running red lights on a signalised pedestrian crossing Shirley Rd have posed a major threat to pupils. The school complained to both the city council and Papanui-Innes Community Board, which has resulted in action. Sandra The city counJamieson cil has changed the phasing of the lights. The red light has been phased for three seconds longer before the green crossing signal appears, which gives drivers longer to come to a stop before children cross the road. Said acting principal Sandra Jamieson: “It’s great to see how that gap makes such a big difference.” There were also adjustments made to parking outside the school but that was too new to see results yet, she said. News Rest home chef spices up competition CHEF ANDREW Jelley may be new to aged care cuisine but a week ago he competed with the country’s best in Auckland. The Palm Grove Rest Home in Shirley chef competed in the Senior Lifestyle Cuisine, a culinary competition which highlights the trend towards innovative cuisine at aged care facilities. Set within the NZ Chefs National Salon 2017, the Senior Lifestyle Cuisine cooking competition showcased the culinary skills of 10 chefs from around New Zealand and dispels the image of rest home food as bland or unappealing. Mr Jelley arrived at Palm Grove late last year after stints at Savoire Café in Merivale, Bully Hayes in Akaroa and Bloody Mary’s at Rydges Hotel. While working in aged care may not seem like a traditional career path for a chef, it suits him. “Working late nights takes its toll after a while. I wanted more normal hours and I’ve enjoyed getting to know the residents,” he said.

Mr Jelley found the competition “pretty intense” but said he’d be up for it again next year. “I learned a lot this time around and I’d been keen to give it another go next year,” he said.

Long-serving probation officer retires LINDA WINSKILL, a teacher and then stay-at-home mother with two small children had all the makings of a Department of Corrections staff member without knowing it. Thirty-two years on, Ms Winskill retired last week from her role as service manager in Canterbury Corrections. “A person working with offenders needs to be able to connect with people from all walks of life,” says district manager Lisa Joseph. ‘‘Being a mother, a teacher and having a social conscience are good places to start.” “I wanted to work as a social worker and had applied for a job with the old Department of Social Welfare,” Ms Winskill said. “However, they required an assurance that you were prepared to go anywhere in the country to work which I couldn’t do with a young family.” A friend was a manager at the Department of Justice, as Corrections was then, and suggested she apply for a job as a probation officer. She got the job and immediately really loved it. “There was no formal training for the role of probation officer, you learned on the job,” she said. Ms Winskill’s first job was to write reports before being given a ‘nominal caseload’, working with low risk offenders. This enabled her to learn the sentencing and offender management skills that would become her craft. “Working with people on sentence is very challenging and very rewarding,” she says. “While a large proportion of the people we work with we see only once, there are those we get to know far too well. “Working with someone to make change, through the bumps they encounter along the way, is incredibly rewarding. You are changing what is sometimes a lifelong behaviour and belief system.” Over the years, Ms Winskill has worked with hundreds, even

thousands of people on sentence, supporting them, holding them to account for their offending and working to help them make changes in their lives. “Linda has made a significant, positive difference in the lives of many people, offenders and colleagues,” Mrs Joseph said. “Being a probation officer can be a tough job. Probation officers find themselves being mentor, support, parent, all rolled into one. They need to be able to effectively engage the offenders they work with and to also hold them to account. They need to identify and act appropriately to changes in behaviour, when things are going well and when they are going badly.” Ms Winskill carried on her Corrections career as a probation officer until her appointment as service manager in 1999 when she took over the management of a team of 13 probation staff. There have been many signifi-
cant changes over the 30 years, particularly in the number of offenders in the community and also the oversight required of community offenders. “While drug use has always been a concern, the increased use of methamphetamine has been a growing challenge for offenders, Corrections and the community as a whole,” Ms Winskill said. “People start using drugs from all sections of the community and for a myriad of reasons,” she says, “but many end up in the same place; fighting an addiction and with criminal charges. “Seeing a person make a significant change in their thinking and behaviour; finishing a rehabilitation programme, finding a job, these are highly satisfying parts of a probation staff members job.” New sentences and orders introduced over the past 10 years and new technology for manag-
ing offenders in the community have changed the role and community expectations of the work of Corrections and what can be done to safeguard the community. In 2003, Ms Winskill was seconded to Wellington and worked in Corrections’ National Office for three months on developing KPIs for probation staff. She was also selected to be trained in a cognitive skills course by two Canadian criminologists, the precursor to Straight Thinking and MIRP. “Attending the centennial celebration for the probation service in Wellington, representing probation at a Corrections conference in Brisbane, a secondment to national office, completing a diploma of social work and my service manager role were real career highlights for me,” Ms Winskill said. “It can be a hard job. It’s particularly hard when we get
negative media. The Corrections team do incredible work, mentoring and supporting some of our most difficult citizens and it is great to see more about the positive work Community Corrections does.” “Corrections is a really good employer and there are lots of opportunities to move to different roles. “The people who work for the department are mostly great fun to work with. The work is never boring and time flies by. Look at me, 32 years on. “Most important to me are the enduring friendships I have made in my time here and the wonderful Corrections’ staff,” Ms Winskill said. For her, and husband Alan, who is also retiring from the department after 17 years, retirement includes “more time with grandchildren, more time to travel, garden, stained glass work and sleeping in.”

Jordan Riki (Hornby Panthers), Seth Tauamiti (Papanui Tigers), and Daniel Sakisi (Celebration Lions) have been named in the New Zealand Residents 18s wider training squad to meet an Australian-based selection of young New Zealanders playing for NRL clubs. The Australian-based squad includes former Celebration Lions Cruz Topai-Aveai and former Halswell Hornets scrumhalf Joseph Taipari. Topai-Aveai (now with the Cronulla Sharks) and Taipari (Parramatta Eels) play in the Holden Cup. The New Zealand Residents 18s will be whittled down to an 18-man squad on September 12 to take on the Australian-based team, known as Taurahere, on September 23 in Auckland. Hydrate to elevate We all know drinking water is important, but the majority of us simply don’t drink enough even though we know it makes us feel great when we do. We look at the benefits and motivate you to drink more with a few tips on how to make it just a little more palatable. With over a quarter of Kiwis consuming less than two glasses of water a day and only 5% drinking more than the recommended eight, the message obviously hasn’t hit home on the importance of hydrating our body. A recent survey conducted by SodaStream found that Cantabrians are particularly guilty when it comes to their water intake. With 82% drinking less than six glasses of water a day, but with over 85% admitting they feel healthier when they drink more water, something needs to be done to bridge the gap in terms of what we know to be true and what we’re actually doing about it. This same survey revealed that although 41% of us limit how many soft drinks we consume due to our concerns over sugar content, the same number of people said tea or coffee is their number one drink of choice.
Some people even believe that the water consumed in their cup of Joe constitutes part of their water intake. This is a fallacy. As caffeine actually dehydrates us, as does alcohol too, it means we need to drink even more water to compensate. Not so surprisingly the reason we don’t drink nearly enough water is that we simply forget. Now with apps you can download direct to your smart phone, there are no more excuses. Further studies proved that people who had a SodaStream machine in their homes were more likely to drink more water. In fact, the study showed that people drank 30% more water. For those of us who aren’t used to drinking water like it’s going out of fashion, there are plenty of ways to increase the fun factor while still being healthy.

BAKED PEARS WITH VANILLA AND BAY LEAF SYRUP Ingredients 4 Pears, packham 4 sheets Puff pastry 2 Tbsp Milk 1 Egg Syrup 1 Vanilla bean 2 Bay leaves ¾ cup Caster sugar ½ cup White wine ½ cup Water 1 Tbsp to serve Cream Directions Preheat the oven to 180 deg C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Peel the pears, leaving on the stalks, then slice a sliver off the bottom of each so they sit flat. Lay one sheet of pastry on a lightly floured bench. Sit a pear in the centre and bring the pastry up around the pear. Trim the excess, then seal to ensure the pear is completely enclosed. Use the excess to make leaf shapes and press onto the
pastry. Whisk the egg and milk together then brush all over the pears. Bake for approximately 25min or until golden. Meanwhile, make the syrup by putting all the ingredients into a saucepan and then bring to a boil. Stir then let it reduce – this should take approximately 20min. Serve the pears hot with the syrup poured over and softly whipped cream on the side. VENISON STEAKS WITH KUMARA AND PARSNIP BAKE
Ingredients 50g Butter 500g Orange kumara, peeled 500g Parsnips, peeled 2 cloves Garlic, cut into slivers 1 Tbsp Fresh thyme 1 cup Chicken stock, or vegetable stock, use more if needed 4 Venison, steaks 6 stems Silverbeet, roughly chopped 1 Tbsp to serve Fruit chutney Directions Heat the oven to 190 deg C. Use half of the measured butter to grease a medium-sized ovenproof baking dish.

Cut kumara and parsnip into 3mm thick slices (a mandolin is useful here). Layer kumara and parsnip slices with the garlic, thyme and remaining butter into the baking dish finishing with kumara slices. Carefully pour in the stock and season. Nature Playground The Junior School’s ‘Ruru’ Team (Year 1-2) are planning a new and exciting outdoor ‘Nature Playground’ and various community groups and business’ are getting involved and assisting in the planning and development. Bunnings Riccarton have been working with them to develop a covered area and they are currently writing a letter to Bunnings Head Office to apply for the entire cost of parts and labour for this. The ‘Men’s Shed New Brighton’ were approached to build an outdoor mud kitchen with a parent donating the sinks and Bunnings the materials. They recently delivered it to a very excited group of children who just wanted to get their hands on it! Donations of a wooden boat and pavers have also been given by parents.
It will provide an exciting outdoor classroom, allowing more space for creative play based learning and exploration. It includes plans for a water collection area, edible gardens, reading nooks, water/mud play area, loose parts play area and a bug inspection area.
