News Watery way to read central city poem By Julia Evans SAMANTHA Jory-Smart’s literary work is now part of the city’s history. But her poem, A Promise, can only be seen when it’s wet. The Burnside High School student was asked to write the poem to feature on one of the central city laneways. Black pine and white pine clustered, unfold together, peel into the sky as does Mollett Street: soul encased in heartwood sapwood stripped away. Ruia taitea kia tū ko taikākā anake. The wood is forged with channels for the rain, its branches arch to embrace us all for a thousand years a promise.
