Firebug returns to Ilam, Burnside „„ By Julia Evans POLICE FEAR for residents safety as arson attacks ramp up again after a lull in Burnside and Ilam. The police are investigating after six wheelie bins were set alight in the early hours of Saturday morning. Those working the case are urging the perpetrator to talk to police before anyone is seriously hurt, detective sergeant Michael Freeman said. Four bins were burnt on Westburn Tce, one on Chevron Pl and the last bin was set alight on Greers Rd. A garage on Chevron Pl was also damaged by fire. “Police are treating the incidents as arson and believe they are linked to previous wheelie bin fires in the area,” detective sergeant Freeman said. The previous four attacks happened in May but there had been a period of at least a month where there had been no fires. Greers Rd resident James Wallace, whose flaming bin scorched the side of his home while his children

were asleep in May, said it would eventually end in loss of life. “It’s attempted murder, the wheelie bin was up against the house and could’ve set it on fire and someone could’ve died,” Mr Wallace said. He said he was doing a letterbox drop telling people to keep their bins hidden. Residents in the area have also been told by police to keep their wheelie bins out of sight and off the road, even behind their house. Police are seeking reports of anyone acting suspiciously around Westburn Tce, Chevron Pl and Greers Rd between midnight and 1.30am on Saturday morning as well as any security footage. And if people have not yet reported an arson on or around their property, they should contact police immediately. Anyone with information should phone 363 7400 or to speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
