RECORD: Liliana Braun (front right) broke the 2000m steeplechase record at the South Island secondary schools athletics championships in Dunedin.

Cashmere student runs her way to steeplechase record „„ By Andrew King IN ONLY her fourth time competing in a steeplechase event, Liliana Braun broke the record at the South Island secondary schools athletics championships in Dunedin. The 15-year-old Cashmere High student ran the 2000m steeplechase in 7min 10.15sec, eclipsing the old record of 7min 31sec. “It is my first time competing in athletics properly over a full season and only

my fourth time ever running the steeplechase,” she said. Braun also took gold in the 3000m race. The steeplechase is an obstacle race in athletics, which derives its name from the steeplechase in horse racing. The record time is even more impressive when you consider there is no steeplechase track in Christchurch to practice on. “My coach just drags out some hurdles for me to jump over and that is how

we practice,” she said. With a background in cross-country, Braun said the transition to track running wasn’t too difficult. Her family travelled to Dunedin to watch her compete and she said they were very proud of her effort. She faces a difficult decision due to the fact she also plays tennis in the summer and said she will have to choose between the two. “I can’t make that decision right now, I like both too much,” she said.
