By Annabelle Dick TWO OUTSPOKEN critics of the land information coastal hazards controversy fear they may be left off a new group that could be set up to resolve the issue. The city council is proposing to form a community advisory group to work with it on fixing problems with hazards notations on coastal property’s land information memorandums. But Christchurch Coastal Residents United chairman Tim Sintes and spokesman Darrell Latham are worried they won’t be chosen to sit on the group because of their previous comments against the city council’s Coastal Hazards Assessment Report. By Annabelle Dick LYTTELTON’S BEST known canine has finally succumbed to sickness and age. Tributes are flowing for 17-year-old Tama, a golden labrador/collie cross, who was known throughout the village for his friendly nature and charismatic personality. Several lumps were found in his body and he was put down on November 10 as he was too old to operate on. “He was a local legend – everybody around here knew him and he was a lovely old soul. A real special individual,” Lyttelton Service Station owner John Bailey said. Tama was known for wandering the streets, visiting businesses and breaking into port security. •Turn to page 8

TONY MURDOCH is one of the city’s good guys and reporter Fraser Walker-Pearce profiles him on pages 4-5. The Sumner local has just written his latest sports history book, this one on the North Beach surf club for its 100th anniversary. It’s a top read with quirky yarns and of course great old photos. And I’ll challenge anyone to find spelling, grammatical or punctuation errors in Murdoch’s book. He’s a former school teacher and of the old school so to speak. Which reminds me. A few years ago I was having an ale in a Ferrymead bar. A young staff member told me she was training to be a school teacher. “I hope you can teach your pupils how to spell,” I said. She laughed: “Teach them to spell? I can’t spell myself!” Test your sense of adventure at new leisure park The world needs more Tony Murdochs. – Barry Clarke

News Cob Cottage to be restored OPTIONS TO repair Ferrymead’s historic Cob Cottage will be revealed next week. City council staff are expected to present ways in which the historic settlers’ cottage can be repaired to the LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Community Board. Cob Cottage was significantly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, but repairs were put on hold until Ferrymead Bridge could be fixed. The Main Rd building is tucked away next to the Mt Pleasant Yacht Club. The estimated cost of repair is $181,690. Christchurch Heritage Trust chairwoman Dr Anna Crighton said it will be a welcoming sight to see the cottage restored to its former glory. “It’s very significant because everybody knows and loves this building. Whether they’re going to work or to the beach – it’s an iconic landmark for the area,” she said. The cottage is owned by the city council and falls into Heritage New Zealand’s Historic Place Category 2. It was insured for $109,800. Dr Crighton is glad the city

Tony Murdoch
A passion for recording Sumner’s Tony Murdoch has just published his new sports history book Black and White about the North Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. It coincides with the club’s centenary celebrations. Fraser Walker-Pearce spoke to him You must be thrilled to have published the book when you did. Yes, exactly. It was published in time for the club’s centenary celebrations over Labour Weekend. They had hundreds attend that. Is this your first sports history book? No, I have written two other sports histories, one on the Riccarton Cricket Club in 2002 and then in 2013 I did the 150th jubilee history of the Christchurch Football Club. Then this one came along, they asked me to do it, and I’ve been doing that ever since. So you’ve been working on this for the past three years? Yes. It’s a big project, I think it’s about 240 pages. Probably the club records weren’t as detailed as we would’ve liked but we were able to cross-reference with Surf Lifesaving New Zealand’s annual
reports and check most of it off. Things like results and that kind of thing were hard to check off though. Who approached you from the club to do the project? Roger Smith the president of the club talked to me about it. He’s lived and breathed the club for about three or four years. What’s different about this book compared to your others? This one is more of a coffee book style. With lots of newspaper clippings like the famous gala dances at North Beach. That’s basically how the club got through the Great Depression and that kind of thing. [In the book] there are ads for the dances, we used the full width of the page in the book with these photos and I think it really adds to the look of the book as well. Obviously it’s called Black and
BLACK AND WHITE: Tony Murdoch has coincided the publication of his sports history book Black and White with the centenary celebrations of the surf club it is written about. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
White, but that’s also the style of the book you’ve created? No, no. There’s a story to that. It’s called Black and White because the club colours are black and white. But also the personal-
ity of the club is very pragmatic, they’re hard workers and they get things done. They make black and white decisions and they don’t muck around – they’re black and white about everything. I ran that
past the committee near the start and they were well pleased to think that’s what people think of the club. How was the club founded? The original thought was that it was a group of men who were members of the New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club who got together and decided to make a club a little further along the beach. But the real story is that there was a guy called Ray Blank. It became pretty clear as I was looking into it that Ray Blank and a group of guys from a North Beach businessman’s association got together and had land interests in the area. They decided that if there was a surf club in the area that would bring people out there and raise their house prices. And they did quite well out of it. Do all of your books look quite deep into the club’s history? Yes, each of the books has a twist to them somewhere in it. The twist in the rugby book was me saying that the conventional theory of the first game of rugby in the country was played in Nelson in 1871 was wrong.

Aranui High for about 16 years. And who’s with you out in Sumner? My wife and I live out there and we have two adult children. I met my wife at a dance at the Sumner surf club. So surf clubs played a big part of you growing up as well? Surf clubs have a big role in what I call the rite of passage. They had dances and social gatherings, they provided a social space for kids in quite an interesting time of their lives. There aren’t many other sports that boys and girls just hang out and compete together that much. Many men and women put countless hours into keeping these clubs going as well. Why do you write sports history books? If you look in the book, there’s only one thing that has stayed in the North Beach community for the past 100 years, and that’s the surf club. There’s been post offices and cafes and restaurants and that kind of thing but the only thing that is still there is the volunteer-run surf club. So I kind of write to give them their turn in the sun even if only for a minute.

I actually started at the Christchurch Star back in the day. When I was teaching I also co-wrote a few history textbooks. There was a group of us at Aranui High, including John Rosanowski and we wrote a series of history books for fifth form (year 11) students. What subjects did they cover? A little bit of New Zealand history, Martin Luther King, race relations in South Africa, we touched on the Springbok Tour. Also the gold rushes, New Zealand foreign policy, and also two books on Hitler and Germany for social studies. To teach students from your own textbook is quite a thrill. And were you born and bred in Christchurch? Yes, born and bred. My brother Tim and I have lived in Sumner all our lives and I think my next project might be on the Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club and their centenary. What schools did you attend back in the day? I was at St Bede’s and then onto Canterbury University where I studied American history. After that I went on to teaching at

It’s in all the official New Zealand histories saying that. But the Christchurch book showed quite clearly that wasn’t the case. They couldn’t have – as the game didn’t exist in New Zealand back then, they just played a hybrid game of soccer. It was actually out of Christ’s College that the game in Christchurch grew. What are the other titles of your books? The Riccarton Cricket Club book is called Green and Gold, and the rugby book was called The Old Club, just like the old newspapers used to call them. How would you define your style of books? Lots of anecdotes, lots of personalities. This book goes through a whole lot of life members, and families of members. These are guys that are prepared to swim out 400-500m to save someone. I mean, can you do that? I certainly can’t. No, I’d definitely 100 per cent drown. Do you work part-time as well as all of this? Yes, I have a full-time job at St Bede’s College. I’m the alumni and community development manager. I’ve been there for eight

News Website to help in disaster By Annabelle Dick COASTAL RESIDENTS are being urged to sign up to an online website in case of another earthquake or natural disaster. Christchurch.getsready.net is an internet database that collects information from neighbourhood support groups and residents who sign up. It lists people’s skills, resources and needs and is used to help residents who need assistance in the event of a disaster. Mt Pleasant School recently took in around 200 people after a tsunami warning was issued in the coastal area post November 14’s 7.8 earthquake. Mt Pleasant Community Response Team leader Robin Arnold said it’s vital the community can respond effectively to disasters and source help locally. “We will need to prepare for larger numbers if we experience another evacuation, and we will rely on being able to mobilise local resources to cater for this, predominantly through this website,” she said. In the event of a major emergency, information would be made available to authorities including the fire service, police and civil defence for use during emergencies.
Coastal hazards critics fearful •From page 1 “We want to ensure balance and that the effected communities will be represented,” Dr Latham said. The city council is undertaking a second peer review of the Coastal Hazard Assessment Report after errors were found in it. The city council-proposed committee, called Coastal Futures Group, will work on behalf of residents on the updated report due next April. The group will be established by May and will be made up of community board members and affected residents.
It is proposed that two members from each of the three community boards that border the coast will sit on the board. Sumner resident Dr Latham is a part of the LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Community Board and Mr Sintes sits on the Coastal-Burwood Community Board. They both also sit on the Community Reference Group which was set up to work with the city council on the report. Both Dr Latham and Mr Sintes are putting their hand up to be a part of the Coastal Futures Group, which has been
formed out of discussions in the reference group. But Mr Sintes said a member had already been approached by the city council to be a part of the committee and her views differed from residents seeking LIM changes. “I’ve seen it happen so many times. When council doesn’t get the answer they want they create another group and handpick the people to manipulate the meeting and get the results they want,” he said. One member from each of the four other community boards throughout the city will also sit on the group.
TAYLORS TO SUMNER: Sumner’s Seb Johnson has continued his great form this year by winning the traditional Taylors to Sumner race. Johnson was one of about 40 lifesavers competing in the pre-season event on Sunday and completed the 7km course from Taylors Mistake Beach to the Sumner clubrooms in 25min. Earlier in the year Johnson was picked to represent the country at the Lifesaving World Championships in the Netherlands with the Junior Black Fins. The first woman across the line on Sunday was Minnie Robberds, who is also a Sumner lifeguard. She completed the race in 28min.

Iconic dog remembered •From page 1 “A lot of the time you’d see him do the rounds in the morning. He’d come visit us and have a few treats, sit down, then move on. A lot of people in Lyttelton would have stories about the old boy,” Mr Bailey said. While nearly every resident knew Tama, mystery surrounded his ownership. “We used to have a rubbish truckie years ago and I’m pretty sure the young guy that drove it was his owner. I think he left Lyttelton and the dog ended up with his dad,” Mr Bailey said. Hawkhurst Rd resident Martin Edwards, who passed away in November last year, was his main owner. His most recent caretaker was Canterbury St resident Maureen Fife. Tama spent time with Mrs Fife for years before moving in permanently last year. “Tama used to walk down the street, meet up with me, get a cuddle, maybe something to eat and then walk out and wander down the street. That’s how we first met,” she said. Soon enough, he refused to leave and the pair became inseparable. “It was good they found each other, they had a really good
special bond. She said if she started breathing unusually during the night he would come and nuzzle her and wake her up to make sure she was okay,” Mr Bailey said. Tributes and memories came from dozens of residents when the news broke via social media. ”(He) walked me to Lyttelton West School many moons ago! Will be missed,” Tara Jones Rudge said. “Tama (was) in the back of my Ford Laser, approx 10 years ago, flatly refusing to get out after we drove around trying to find his owner. Someone came over from Satchmo’s with some food and, yes, low and behold that did the trick. From that day on Holly (now 13) and Tama had a very special bond,” Suzanne Ormandy said. Even though Tama has passed, Mrs Fife and many other residents will remember him for many years to come. “I feel him about sometimes. I’m not spiritual but I know he’s here somewhere.” Tama has been laid to rest at Mrs Fife’s son’s property in Heathcote Valley. HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you have any memories of Tama? Shelter repair a labour of love An iconic piece of Barnett Park is back in mint condition after it was repaired by its original designer. The three-sided bench shelter recently had its old slats removed and new timber stained then fitted by Gerald Austin. The retired Sumner architect and Linwood-Woolston Rotary member designed the seating structure back in 1972. Forty-four years on, he led the restoration with help from fellow Rotary members Richard Papps and Warwick Armstrong.

News Back to the future for Jordan Luck Jordan Luck has written some of New Zealand’s most iconic rock anthems. He spoke to Tom Doudney about life after The Exponents and the inspiration behind his latest material ahead of The Jordan Luck Band’s performance at Lincoln’s Selwyn Sounds concert in March MORE THAN 30 years after their debut single Victoria established The Exponents as Kiwi rock heavyweights, singer Jordan Luck’s songwriting is again in the spotlight. His new outfit, The Jordan Luck Band, was nominated for best rock album at Thursday’s New Zealand Music Awards. It didn’t win the award but Luck said it was phenomenal to have the album, Not Only . . . But Also, getting such a positive reaction. While his songwriting hadn’t changed much over the years, he works harder on the lyrics these days than he did in the early years of The Exponents (originally known as The Dance Exponents). “I find the tunes are still coming out of the air for me but it takes a lot longer to do lyrics than it did,” Luck said. “I was pretty spontaneous back in the day, whereas now I am
a wee bit conscious of the fact I might be singing these in 20 years again, so I really want to be singing something that I want to be singing. “That has been the case since about 1990, when Victoria was about 10-years-old and I was thinking ‘wow, people still really like this song, I wonder what is going to happen to the new stuff?’ And here we are nearly 20 years later and people are still singing ‘Why does love do this to me?’ And I’m going, ‘flipping hell, I better make the next one really good’.” However, Luck said this process had resulted in his best lyrics yet on Not Only . . . But Also. “Even if you didn’t hear the music, it’s a good read,” he said The songs, written over the last three years, cover some very New Zealand territory, often with an interesting twist. There is one about a murder in Lake Tekapo, another about selling paintings

on holiday in Southland and “a beautiful one” inspired by his memories of getting lost near the Wanganui River while on a road trip with original The Dance Exponents guitarist Steve Cowen.
He and Cowen, who died in 1986, had been on their way to record Victoria at the time, when Luck, who was behind the wheel of their Bedford van, decided to take an alternative route.
The Exponents’ induction into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame last year, with Cowen also recognised, had brought the memories back. “The song is really about missing him in a way that is pretty strong.” Luck said starting a new band after the success of The Exponents had been tough in some ways. “The Exponents turn up all the time, there is no getting away from that – we got into the hall of fame last year and now there is a TV film that they are doing on The Dance Exponents.” However, he still enjoyed playing the old songs and said the band’s performance at Selwyn Sounds was likely to be about 75 per cent The Exponents material. Unlike many of the line-up, it will not be Luck’s first time playing in Lincoln. The Exponents have played a number of gigs at the university over the years. •Selwyn Sounds will be held on March 4, 11.30am8.30pm. Tickets can be purchased via Ticketek and buyers will be able to prepurchase a return bus ride between pick up points in Christchurch, Rolleston and Lincoln Domain.

Test your sense of adventure Whether it is mountain biking, walking, thrill seeking or coffee, Christchurch Adventure Park aims to offer something for everyone. Bridget Rutherford reports
FIVE YEARS ago, Canadian leisure developer Select Evolution was keen to build a new adventure park. It searched the United Kingdom, Europe, and even Queenstown and Auckland, to no avail. But in 2011, Christchurch mountain biker Tim Prebble was sitting on a chairlift next to a woman at Whistler Blackcomb – a mountain bike park in British Columbia. The woman was working at the park as a coach. But not only did she work there, she was one of the brains behind it – Select Evolution chairwoman Fiona Sutton. Mr Prebble suggested Select should develop a similar adventure park in Christchurch, but she told him there was nowhere suitable. But Mr Prebble knew just the

place – a 364ha forest block, owned by McVicar Holdings Ltd between Dyers Pass, Worsleys and Summit Rds. Just 17min from the city centre, it connected to some of the existing mountain bike tracks in the Port Hills, and had the perfect valley to install a chairlift
and zip lines. Within three months Ms Sutton visited the site. “One thing led to another,” Select Evolution programme developer Darron Charity said. But fate and a bit of luck weren’t the only things that brought the development to
Christchurch. “It took a hell of a lot of hard work to get it across the line,” he said. When phase one of the Christchurch Adventure Park is completed in December it will be the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

To date it has cost $25 million. The Government and city council’s Development Christchurch each contributed $2 million, while the remaining funding had come from a bank loan, New Urban Group, and investment from the United States, Singapore and New Zealand.

at new Port Hills leisure park “We’ll have to go to market to secure funding for the next phase,” Mr Charity said. He said the developers, manufacturers and contractors had crammed 20 months of work into eight, just to get the park open as a Christmas present for Christchurch. There could be up to 150 contractors on site each day, while there were another 100 people working on it off site, he said. Construction began in April, and already, the early bird season pass tickets have sold out. More tickets aimed at casual users and families will be released this month. What’s more is the park is on schedule and on budget, he said. “We set a budget four years ago and we’re still delivering on it. It’s extremely tight.” The majority of the new tracks had been carved – some with diggers, but the more technical ones have been built by hand, with the help of volunteers armed with shovels and rakes. Each jump has been designed by engineers. The 8km green track has a gradient of about 3-4 per cent, while the 5km blue track is about 5-6 per cent.
FITS IN: The cafe and bar is being built by Amalgamated Builders out of douglas fir – the same timber as the trees that surrounds it.
The hardest – the 5km black track – is where the jumps are introduced and is for more experienced riders. Riders from the age of seven can have a go at mountain biking at the park, and a track will be installed for under five-year-olds next to the cafe. Mr Charity said the park would get more people outdoors and into the sport. There would be 16 coaches at the park, and mountain bikes and safety equipment could be hired, he said. “This is a sport progression park.” Cafe open from 11am TAB & Gaming Function Facilities HOUSIE Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday SHUTTLE Tuesday - Saturday
But it’s not just for mountain and downhill biking. There is also a walking track, you could enjoy a coffee or a drink at the cafe and bar, not to mention the activities for thrill seekers. Four dual zip lines have been installed in different parts of the park – with one being 180m off the ground. At 1.8km, the electric-powered chairlift will be the largest in New Zealand, with the ability to hold 56 chairs at any one time. At the top, it will be 450m high. People will be able to ride the chairlift to get to the top of

the park, where they can either use the tracks to come down, head up to the Summit Rd, or ride the zip lines down. Four people could fit in each chair, with a stand for them to park their bikes in. Mr Charity said the douglas fir trees below the chairlift had to be cut down before a drone was used to take footage of the route. It was then sent over to Austrian manufacturer Doppelmayr, which built the towers before shipping them to Lyttelton, he said. Mr Charity said contractors spent three months doing
concrete work in preparation for the tower installation, which took a month. At the entrance to the park, three douglas fir timber buildings sit amongst the forestry, housing the ticketing reception, the hire facilities and a cafe and bar, which could seat up to 180 people. Mr Charity said the cafe and bar would stock local produce and drinks, including Cassels and Sons Brewery beer and wine from Black Estate, Waipara. “It has to feel like Christchurch,” he said. •Turn to page 14

In the future, they hoped to bring international mountain and downhill races to Christchurch. Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the project would set Christchurch
apart as a great place to visit, and live. “It really fits the city’s image in terms of sport and recreation from mountain to sea.” She said it needed an extraordi-
nary commitment to deliver the project in a short space, however it had been four years of trying to pull it together. “Fiona told me that when she felt they weren’t getting the

investment, she’d go and sit at the site and say it has to happen and now it’s a reality.” Downhill mountain biker Lachlan Cruickshank said the park was one of the reasons he moved to Christchurch, and he had already snapped up a season pass. “It is going to be one of the best bike parks in the Southern Hemisphere and could develop Christchurch into a real mecca of the sport going forward.” Mr Charity said Select Evolution had a 50-year lease for the land, and it hoped to continue to develop more of it. “There’s at least 120km of track that we can develop in here. There’s so much scope.” He said it was a “legacy project” and as a cyclist himself, was looking forward to riding it rather than working on it. “I didn’t expect to be working 100-hour weeks. But to see the park come to life is always a dream. It’s exceeded my expectations in what it’s become.” • Christchurch Adventure Park will have its official opening on December 16. It will be open from 10am-8pm in summer, and 10am-5pm in winter.

•From page 13 There will eventually be 235 car parks, and the entire park will be smoke-free. Mr Charity said phase two would see the construction of a 1.5km mountain coaster, a luge on a track which would travel up to 80km/h. The New York designers visited recently to plan it. That is expected to be completed by December, 2017. The village is also part of phase two, which eventually would have 282 beds. Mr Charity said they hoped to host school camps, and could teach students about the forest and ecology, along with groups wanting to do team-building exercises. The benefit the park would have on the city’s economy was a huge driver for the project, he said. “We’ve always seen this as a major boost for New Zealand tourism. It attracts the overnight stay in Christchurch,” he said. It is expected to bring another 30,000 bed-nights to Christchurch, he said. The park would also employ between 100 and 120 staff, most of them local.

SMART CONNECTIONS New technology makes electrical connections safer, more efficient
The electrical industry has seen many changes in recent years. For example, electrical protection (the fuse box) has improved immensely. From the slow old re-wireable fuses we now have super-fast circuit breakers. We have surge protection, residual current devices and even arc detection devices. These are all designed to protect you, your house and your belongings from the risk of electrocution and fire. The wiring has improved. Modern cabling is known as tough plastic sheath (TPS) and will last a long time. The products have improved. The
technology now available can make your home more energy efficient and more convenient. Lighting has changed with the development of LED lighting. There are data networks, fibre networks, 4 K TV, wifi, Bluetooth, solar and a range of other products to suit your lifestyle. So, where do you get the best electrical advice? Google it. Get advice and opinions about products and services. Consumer NZ. They offer research and sensible conclusions regarding most things. Read magazines and newspapers.
Talk to a specialist. The team at Smart Connections has spent a lot of time researching products because they are interested in knowing the best solution for you. When choosing an electrician, consider these points. Does your electrician: - Communicate well and explain things in simple terms so you can understand what you are spending money on? - Use drop sheets, leave the house tidy, with no finger marks left and plaster up holes? - Make sure you understood what options are available with technology so you can make informed choices?
- Return your calls and come and fix stuff that doesn’t work properly? - Belong to ECANZ and offer a $10,000 workmanship guarantee? - Have all staff police checked? Smart Connections can tick all the above, which is why they have been in business for 18 years. They have a wealth of experience in commercial and residential electrical work, electrical inspections, media, lighting solutions and anything electrical, and offer a very thorough and reasonably priced service. Why not call them on 0800 326 3326 to discuss your requirements.

The story of Christmas is evident everywhere you look at Epic Christian Books & Gifts in Ferrymead – items to bring the joy of the season into your home, such as Nativity scenes, Christmas story books for the children, Christmas cards and Advent calendars. There is also a huge range of Christian-themed items that would make perfect Christmas gifts, such as the popular colouring books, a wide range of Bibles, jewellery, mugs, T-shirts, CDs and DVDs. Plus there are fiction and non-fiction books for adults, books by New Zealand authors, colourful children’s books, diaries, journals and Sunday School supplies.
Run by a trust, Epic Christian Books & Gifts was established three years ago with the specific purpose of raising funds for victims of religious persecution around the world, especially those from Syria and Iraq, who are currently living under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions. “All the profits from our sales go towards providing items for these people,” manager Sandy Gallen explains. “At present the funds are going towards providing packs for the children. We send the funds over and the packs and items to go in them are purchased there for distribution, which is much more cost-effective than sending the items from here.”

Your Local Views Evacuation plan essential Heathcote Ward councillor Sara Templeton talks about last week’s earthquakes, community resilience and being prepared for natural disasters Over the last week we have been thinking a lot about the importance of community again. The local community response to the earthquakes on November 14 was heartening, with many people opening their homes to those evacuated from low lying areas of Christchurch. Mt Pleasant’s community response team opened up the local school and had around 200 residents through and Civil Defence volunteers supported the evacuation centres. While there were glitches with the tsunami sirens, these issues are being worked through as part of the review of the entire Civil Defence response. This was the first time we have had a serious threat of tsunami since the sirens were installed and many communities will now want proper evacuation
plans to help the process run more smoothly. While the job of Civil Defence is to tell us to evacuate, we also need to work out the how and where. Communities know their area best; which routes would be best for the different parts of their neighbourhood and where the high ground is. Community boards are ideally placed to support communities as they develop these plans and can access assistance from within the wider city council organisation. Let us know how we can help. Just a few hours later we were looking further afield, to communities in North Canterbury and Kaikoura hit so badly by the quakes. We were on the receiving end of amazing support from around the country in 2011 (we had fudge from a family in Rolleston and muffins from Levin among other things) and we looked to return the favour.
Support groups from across the city that had formed in 2011 burst into life again and messages with drop-off points for supplies started coming in through my email and on Facebook. Red Cross also set up an appeal and we have donated to it online. While the immediate provision of goods is useful, we know from experience just how long support will be needed. The Red Cross has provided support to many community groups and low-decile schools throughout our city over many years now and donating money will help with the long-term recovery of these communities. As I think of the constant shaking and damage to the worst hit areas, I am comforted by the knowledge that within them volunteers and local networks are responding as we did and starting the long task of supporting and rebuilding their own communities. We will do what we can to help. The shaking in Christchurch will have brought back vivid memories for many. Look after yourselves, your friends, family and neighbours and please ask for help if you or others need it.

There has also been no attempt to put in the balance the psychosocial effects of keeping the school out of the area for so long – effects which have been pointed out to the Ministry by many school supporters and community organisations. The Executive Summary of the Ministry report (dated October 5, 2016) points out that to rebuild the school in Redcliffs Park will probably be more costly than a full rebuild on Main Rd “not including site acquisition costs”. It also indicates that it will likely take longer. So why decide to do this? Maybe the answer lies in the fact that Redcliffs Park is bigger than the Main Rd site and does not need roughly $800,000 of bund, and has according to the Ministry “better long-term advantages for the investment of Crown funds than a return to the Main Rd site.” There we have it, in my opinion. But a great many local residents will be very upset by the proposed loss of the park, in its waterfront location. Once green space is built on it is lost forever. I urge residents to keep a close eye on the consultation process and plans and make their views known.

A reader responds to an article from two weeks ago on Redcliffs School relocating to Redcliffs Park. Dr Pat McIntosh – As a Redcliffs resident with a passion for the area I was personally taken aback to read in Bay Harbour News Nuk Korako’s comments about the ministry’s decision regarding Redcliffs School. If they had come along six years ago and said they wanted to rebuild the school, by forcibly taking over our local park and playing fields, there would have been outrage and opposition. But by preventing the school from returning to the Main Rd site for so long, in the face of all the evidence that the site was safe to occupy, they have so cowed the community that this now looks to some like a good option. The suggestion that psychosocial factors were important totally misses the point that the reporting psychologists were agreed that there is nothing particularly unusual about this situation. All schools have to educate their pupils to assess local dangers – for instance a nearby busy main road is objectively more dangerous than the rockfall risks at the Main Rd site. Mitigating and managing such anxiety is a normal part of education, and in any case by

Stay out of the water during tsunami risk BY GARY MANCH, NAVIGATIONAL SAFETY OFFICER, LYTTELTON IT’S HARD to write an article when there are thousands of people in Kaikōura affected by the recent earthquake. Sadly, it brings back memories from five years or so ago when Christchurch and its surrounding areas suffered a similar fate, nature has a harsh way of letting us know it’s there, that’s for sure. However, you need to consider your safety especially on the water, clearly if we have a major shake the last thing we want is for boaties to head out on the water, until it is clear there is no risk of tsunami. This applies to both our seashores and rivers as both can cause danger due to not only the possible tsunami, but also slips and the like in our internal waterways. Common sense really. Moving on, recently we had a change to our bylaws, the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2016 came into effect on the October 10, 2016, two things that may affect you have been brought into place, identification of boats and also
Pirate’s Corner
compulsory wearing of life jackets, this includes paddle boards and the like. Simply if you are under way on the water in any type of vessel 6m or less you must wear a life jacket. In relation to identification, if your boat is towed by a trailer and is powered by a motor, this includes jet skis, you now must have the following; Either side of the vessel above the waterline, the registration number of the towing trailer, put on the boat in 90mm high numbers and letters that are visible by the naked eye during day time at 50m. Non-powered vessels have different requirements. The above is a quick synopsis of the changes, for the full information and any exemptions or
approvals that may be given in relation to the new bylaw please check out the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2016 at http://ecan.govt. nz/our-responsibilities/maritime/ Pages/rec-boating.aspx Lastly, I had a request from a local nurse, and it was about all you hardy people out on your watercraft in the summer in the full sun, while this is not actually navigation safety-related, she brought out a good point, the water is very glaring and with the sun and a combination of wind. It’s very easy to get burnt, so as part of your preparation make sure you slip, slap and slop the old sunscreen on, wear sunglasses and a hat to protect you from getting burnt and worst still melanoma. Be safe out there.
Short wait for library unveiling THE NEW Redcliffs Library is nearing completion and will officially reopen next month. The current library, based at the Redcliffs Tennis Club on Main Rd, will be closed on Friday to transition to the rebuilt facility. Staff are urging residents to help in a moving book trail from the old to new library at 91
Main Rd. The old library was badly damaged in the February and June 2011 earthquakes, and later demolished. The new library building will be opened on Friday, December 2, at 3.30pm, by Mayor Lianne Dalziel. All residents are invited to the official unveiling.

Cramping pain in my leg when I try to walk
to use the gym by themselves to keep on top of their claudication. At Physical Sense they have been going strong with the Intermittent Claudication class ever since the first class eight years ago. You can try the classes for FREE. If you want to continue and you have WINZ support, WINZ usually pays for the classes (as WINZ is VERY supportive of these classes).
Intermittent Claudication “This is different from “night-cramps” Ietje van Stolk, (physiotherapist at Physical Sense and the centre for Senior Well-being) explains. This kind of cramping (sometimes called “window -shopping legs”) is triggered by normal exertion of the leg muscles and is typically caused by obstruction of the arteries. Sufferers have to find themselves a regular excuse to stop for a while to allow the blood flow to reach the cramped up muscles. The official name for this condition is Intermittent Claudication. Claudication is pain and/or cramping in the lower leg due to inadequate blood flow to the muscles. The pain usually causes the person to limp. The word “claudication” comes from the Latin “claudicare” meaning to limp. Claudication typically is felt while walking, and subsides with rest. It is commonly referred to as “intermittent” claudication because it comes and goes with exertion and rest. In severe claudication, the pain is also felt at rest. It is a painful condition that really “cramps people’s lifestyle”. The pain free walking distance tends to get shorter as the condition progresses. If you suffer from this condition it is crucial to understand that the body actually finds a way to
increase the blood flow to the legs IF THE DEMAND is there. It is like every thing in the body……..”use it or lose it”. Unfortunately many people with this condition end up in a vicious cycle; the pain stops the walking, and the lack of walking increases the problem. Exercise is recommended to greatly reduce symptoms and to increase pain free walking distance. Eight years ago on request of the vascular nurse in Christchurch hospital, Physical Sense started a two weekly circuit for Intermittent Claudication patients. The pilot program started with 50 clients. • 82% of all clients, experienced improvement in their walking distance • Quite a number of clients doubled their walking distance, for some it even became limitless. • After a year 88% of clients were still active • There was an exceptionally low dropout rate of only 8% • The 18% who did not notice a difference in relation to their walking distance still enjoyed all the other benefits of exercise (to heart, lungs, sugar levels, bone health,

In the groups we are looking at 50-80+ year olds that are giving their legs a workout by using steppers, treadmills, stationary bikes and other exercise stations. When considering a retaining wall, Solveig Construction can advise the best solution based on the structural requirements and aesthetic needs. The main function of retaining wall systems is to create a strong wall structure to contain and stabilise soil and rock behind the wall system to stop erosion on steep and sloped landscapes. The other advantage is for their decorative appeal that will transform any landscape setting to look attractive and create visual interest. Retaining walls can be constructed from various building materials such as, concrete blocks, natural stone blocks, bricks, poured in concrete and timber. Before choosing the look of the wall you want on your property, you must seek professional advice. With our expertise and knowledge, Solveig Construction can suggest the best type of wall design and the most suitable material appropriate to your needs. Contact Dougall Patchett to discuss options for your retaining wall design. Phone 027 431 5289. Parklands Drive – Concrete block and timber walls with steps As the house is at the bottom of a sloping section, the homeowner required clear access around the front of the home. The solution is a concrete block retaining wall topped by a landscaped terrace edged with a small timber wall. Steps allow access from the lawn to the front entry.
