Canterbury turned on warm spring day for Russley School’s annual athletic sports recently. All 450 children from new entrants to year 8 took part in the event with parents and grandparents offering sideline support maintaining the school’s tradition of the sports day being a “family” day.

PACE: Six-year-old Leon Qian leads the house relay. (Below) – Xanthe Moore shows determination in the nineyear-old girls’ relay.

DETERMINED: Five-year-old Raj Singh gets ahead of the pack in the junior boys’ sprint.

HIGH FLYERS: Former Riccarton High School students Liam McIver (left), Dafydd Watkins, Mark Holdaway and Sophie Madsen received The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award from Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy recently. The gold award is the highest level of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award. To receive the award, students were required to complete five sections, which included undertaking a service in their community for a minimum of 12 months, working on a skill of their choice, travelling away for four days and three nights, taking part in a physical recreation activity for a minimum of 12 months and engaging in a purposeful activity away from home for five days such as environmental work. Deputy principal Shane Morrow said it is a huge commitment of time and effort to get through to the gold award. “We’re very proud of their outstanding achievement,” he said. Last year’s Riccarton High School student Sophie Madsen also had her gold award presented to her while current year 13 student Bonnie Maxwell will be attending a ceremony at Government House, Wellington, to receive her gold award.
