Flowers make you feel better
By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A TEAM from Bunnings Warehouse Riccarton have built two raised flower beds for a woman dedicated to making life for the unwell a little brighter. Janine Thomson, of Darfield, heads around different plant growers and gardens, picking up flowers to gift to sick patients around the city. When Bunnings Warehouse Riccarton was asked for a donation of plants, the team, led by activity organiser Amy Maclennan, rallied together to build two raised garden beds recently. This was so Ms Thomson could grow her own flowers to build posies for the community. “At the moment we are using donated flowers which is amazing and I am very grateful for those flowers. But we also like to incorporate our own flowers we grow ourselves,” she said. The Flower Garden New Zealand charity delivers about 35 posies once a week to places including Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch Women’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House South Island. Her passion for helping others through flowers was ignited after she had a car accident when she was 17.

Ms Thomson said if she has any flowers left over she will give them to the staff of hospitals or retirement homes. WE ARE BACK IN HORNBY!!

“The nurses really cheered me up, that is why I like to give back to the nurses. It completely changed my whole visit. It perked me up,” she said. Other companies to have donated plants to the charity garden include Southern Woods Nursery, South Pacific Roses and Pearsons Coal and Garden Supplies.

AS COLOURFUL as a gypsy caravan, a tiny tram won two awards for Christchurch’s Tramway Historical Society. At a New Zealand and Australian Tramway Museums competition the cable car, based at Ferrymead, won two Council of Tramway Museums of Australasia awards. The tram was a restored cable car trailer called Mornington No.111 that used to travel on Dunedin’s High St. Christchurch Tramway Historical Society management committee member and volunteer Don McAra said next month the society will put on an event to get more members involved in the society. The event will be held on November 19 and 20. Anyone interested in attending can email donjmcara@gmail.com
