Brownlee hits back again at critics

A DOGMATIC Gerry Brownlee hit back again yesterday at critics of the rebuild – including the organiser of the conference where he was speaking.

The Earthquake Recovery Minister was disappointed by NZ Council for Infrastructure Development chief executive Stephen Selwood’s comments on the rebuild.

Mr Selwood told media in July that Christchurch was in danger of becoming “bland”.

Investors were saying Christchurch was “a fantastic opportunity lost” or “a disappointment”.

He blamed Government control and bureaucratic structures for stifling bold rebuild action.

But Mr Brownlee said the planned and systematic approach the Government had taken was “considered by international experts to be in many respects peerless”.

“So the NZCID description that Christchurch is on track to be a bland city and a “fantastic opportunity lost” is, as I say, disappointing.”

He made the comments in a speech at the NZCID Building Nations Symposium in Wigram yesterday.

About 400 delegates were at the symposium, where he was invited to speak alongside Mayor Lianne Dalziel and Deputy Prime Minister Bill English.

Mr Brownlee went on to address other critics.

“Understandably, various experts predicted dire things for this city immediately after the earthquakes. Massive population flight, loss of property values and years of high unemployment – the picture was grim.”

NATE WAKELIN is 18 months old but he gets to park his brand new BMW next to his dad’s Volkswagen.

Yesterday he received a pint-sized stylish black BMW built especially for him.

Dad Shane Wakelin expects his son’s new pride and joy will be parked up in the family’s garage.

Ten children with developmental disorders received brand new BMW electric cars customised on site at Jeff Gray BMW by charity Gobabygo.

“Nate was a very happy boy when he tried out the car,” said Mr Wakelin.

The accelerator for the car is in the head rest, something young Nate quickly worked out, said Mr Wakelin.

Nate was born with Angelman syndrome, which affects one in 20,000 people.

It means Nate will have development challenges and probably not age mentally more than three or fouryears-old, said Mr Wakelin.

He may not speak much and likely to have trouble walking in the future, he said.

“He is a very cheeky, happy and

determined boy. He will have a lot to overcome,” he said.

Gobabygo heads the car project, which adapts toy cars to be a therapy tool. Families apply on its website for a car. If accepted, the cars are adapted to the needs of each young driver.

Gobabygo board member Jacqui Madelin said each toy car cost about $1500, but BMW New Zealand has helped out by donating several of the cars.

Word of mouth is spreading the news about the special cars – 37 have been handed out in the past year, said Ms Madelin.

But to continue the project desperately needs more funding.

Though the toy cars are donated by BMW each car needs to be set up with harness, and special controls.

The plan is to hand out 50 cars by the end of the year, said Ms Madelin.

Firewood for struggling households

HOUSEHOLDS struggling to have smoke-free log burners this winter are getting loads of firewood bought for them by the regional council.

Environment Canterbury has clamped down on smoky chimneys this winter with a “no visible smoke” rule.

This means only 15 minutes of visible smoke from the chimney is allowed when the log burner is started.

ECan must meet the Government’s rules of three or less high pollution days by next year and one by 2020. Christchurch has had seven high pollution nights this year.

Seven households have been supplied with wood by ECan so far this winter at a cost to ratepayers of $2600.

Nadeine Dommisse said it was the “best way” to support households who may be in “extreme financial and health hardship”.

Forty people had requested financial assistance. ECan was working with a community group to decide the way to best help them, she said.

Ms Dommisse said the wood given out was usually in kindling form because people did not use enough to start their fires.

Ms Dommisse said it was the regional council’s “number one priority” to help people keep warm.

“A smoke-free fire can help people keep warm and healthy as it provides a hotter, more efficient fire and to get this we know good quality, dry seasoned wood is important,” she said.

ECan’s “smoke spotters” personnel had caused concern, especially among older people who were fearful of using their log burners in case of being fined, said Age Concern Canterbury chief executive Simon Templeton.

Mr Templeton said winter warmth was the top issue for the organisation’s social workers.

The elderly thought ECan’s rule meant “fires were bad”, he said.

“Luckily ECan have clarified the situation. It is not ‘don’t use your fire’ but ‘use it in this way’, ” he said.

An ECan report released last year, Health Impact Assessment, showed that banning log burners would drive 7500 households into “fuel poverty”.

The report said more vulnerable groups, elderly, families with children, invalids and low-income households, would struggle to afford a new form of heating.

On Wednesday The Star reported that 280 complaints had been received on ECan’s phone line to dob in neighbours with smoky chimneys, with New Brighton residents complaining the most.

Call to make hill road safer for cyclists

CYCLISTS ARE sick of dicing with death on Dyers Pass Rd because of impatient drivers overtaking on blind corners and want a speed reduction on the popular hill section.

Spokes Canterbury member Steve Muir is lobbying city council to lower the speed limit on Dyers Pass Rd to 70km/h or to put in yellow lines to ban drivers from overtaking on parts of the road.

Mr Muir will make his plea for changes to the SpreydonHeathcote Community Board this morning to improve safety on the troublesome road.

The move comes after cyclist Alex Mann was given a ticket for

blocking traffic on Dyers Pass Rd near Victoria Park, in October last year.

He was cycling home to Cass Bay when a van tried to pass him on a blind corner. He had moved into the centre of the left lane because the blind corner was too narrow to move to the far left.

He protested against the ticket but police stood by the issuing officer’s decision.

Mr Muir said changes to the road were needed urgently before there was a death on the road.

Vehicles often tried to squeeze past cyclists on blind corners from Sign of the Takahe to Worsleys Spur where the road was narrow with little room for both cyclists and vehicles, he said.

He no longer cycles on the road because it is too dangerous.

“I used to bike it a lot but I’ve had so many bad experiences,” he said.

Along with lowering the speed limit, Mr Muir wants signage to prevent passing on blind corners and for drivers to leave a 1.5m gap between vehicles and cyclists.

Mr Muir said he would bring up whether the road rules are clear on whether cyclists should remain on the left side of the road, or move into the centre of the left lane when going around a blind corner.

Mr Muir said this was a grey area and confusing for cyclists.

“It’s about trying to clarify that grey area.”

Teen pleads guilty to assault

A 19-YEAR-OLD has admitted an assault on an elderly man in New Brighton Mall.

Resham Toa Blake-Faatafa pleaded guilty to a charge causing grievous bodily harm to 72-yearold Ken Chappell in the early hours of July 15.

Mr Chappell, who is from Dunedin, suffered serious injuries.

Mr Chappell is also unable to recall the night of the attack.

The district court was told

Blake-Faatafa was remanded in custody to a case review hearing on October 6 to give counsel time to sort out the second charge and the disputed summary.

Construction boss says sorry to Irish community

FLETCHER Construction chief executive Graham Darlow has apologised to the Irish community after suggesting that some builders who carried out shoddy repair work on Christchurch earthquakedamaged homes had “gone back to Ireland”.

Mr Darlow made the comments on Wednesday after releasing the findings of a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment quake repair survey.

The survey of around 100 Canterbury homes found 32 had foundation repairs that did not meet Building Act standards.

An additional 23 homes were assessed as having minor repair defects Mr Darlow said the affected properties would be brought up to standard by the contractor at

“There may be a few that we can’t find the contractor, maybe they’ve gone out of business, maybe they’ve gone back to Ireland, and for those Fletcher will be fronting for the cost of that repair.”

SOUTHSHORE was hit hard by the earthquakes – but the dunes, beach and estuary there remain as beautiful to visit as ever.

The Southshore Spit Reserve lies at the end of Rockinghorse Rd, and the 20min loop track there is a great place to for a walk.

The views there stretch out to sea, over the estuary and across to the Sumner cliffs.

At low tide you can walk along the mudflats there, where you are likely to spot a range of native birds.

Those include herons, spoonbill, kingfisher and, from September, thousands of godwits.

MIKE PERO – Mike Pero Real Estate founder What does a weekend in Christchurch usually look like for you?

My routine is pretty boring. I normally start with Les Mills in the morning on both Saturday and Sunday. I do spin classes to get me going from about 8.30am, and then in summer, when the weather is good, I’ll get out on my road bike for two to four hours. But once I come home after that I’ll usually sit by the pool or the spa and chill.

Are there any cafes or restaurants here you recommend?

There are some great ones on Victoria St and in Merivale.

The standard in Christchurch is world-class now, so you can eat anywhere and you know it will be good.

What about reading or TV shows – any favourites?

I might sound a little morbid but I enjoy watching crash investigation and crime investigation!

And I do enjoy motorsports. But I don’t read as much as I should.

I feel guilty when I pick up a book right now because I am so busy, and I have so many reports and other things to read. But of course I read The Star religiously!

Could you pick a favourite spot in Canterbury?

I thoroughly enjoy on a nice summer’s day climbing up the Port Hills on the bike and cruising along Summit Rd, looking out across the city to the alps. It’s beautiful on a good day.

The beach bum who ventures Alpine Cliff Rescue Christchurch is the team that goes when the terrain is too “gnarly” for emergency services. Team leader Jason Tweedie talks to Shelley Robinson about digging his mate out of a small avalanche, surfing and how he deals with body recovery Thanks for chatting with me, sounds like you have had a busy morning?

Yeah, I had to drop off my daughter at school, we were running a bit behind today. I’m a professional dad these days.

Nice, what does that entail?

Looking after the little one, getting her activities sorted during the week. She goes to pre-school, North Beach so I look after that.

We live out in Brighton. I’m a bit of a surfer, a beach bum. I’ve been here about eight years, before that Wanaka, Christchurch again and Australia. I go surfing whenever I can get away from the wee one.

Paige is her name.

Good name, my niece is named Paige too. When was the last time she made you laugh?

She woke up in the middle of the night yelling “there’s no icecream”.

(Laughing) Yeah, the other night, she cried before-hand – you know she has a wee cry beforehand to let you know something is going on like a bad dream. The missus and I woke up and heard “there’s no ice-cream”! We pissed ourselves laughing.

She sounds like a real character. Is she a beach bum too?

Yep, she’s a good wee swimmer she loves getting in the water. She dives under the water – got her own little wet suit. She comes out with me on the stand-up paddle board. She lies in front of me then on the wave I pull her up on her feet, she puts her arms out and cruises with me. She’s been surfing with me since two.

We went rock climbing the other day.

You and Paige?

Yep, she has got her little rock shoes and harness. I put on a rope and we go for a little climb. She has a climbing board at home. Or we go to the climbing wall or go to a few crags around the Port Hills there. Chuck a rope on and get her up on the rock and off she goes. Castle Hill is good too.

I just figure if I throw as many opportunities at her, she can whittle out the ones she likes when she is older.

Jeepers, I’ve been trying to master surfing for years. I don’t feel so good that a threeyear-old can do it and I can’t. Best place to surf in Christchurch?

there’s good surf there. We have a place out there.

Outside of being a professional dad you are involved with Alpine Cliff Rescue Christchurch. Talk to me about that.

Yeah, I run the Alpine Cliff Rescue – a crew of roughly 30. We do anything from cliffs to trucks going off road, up and down Canterbury.

We help Mt Cook Rescue.

What are the kind of situations you guys go and rescue people?

River environments, like when the Waimak is in flood. We do vertical cliffs, when people are rock climbing and are stuck in gnarly situations.

Does that happen? People just exceed their ability or something?

Yeah, about two years ago now, this guy went down Temple Basin with a speed wing and his skis on.

A speed wing?

It’s a bit like a small parapont – a high-speed parachute – and they fly off the top of a mountain with skis on at about 100km/h bouncing with your skis on. People do it over glaciers and stuff.

This fella had done two trips off Temple Basin late one night in winter and he misjudged where he was and he got into the valley system which is quite gnarly. It was about an 80-degree wall of bush and snow and he couldn’t get out of the valley. He slammed into the rock wall at the bottom of the valley. Didn’t get injured, just broke his thumb and got concussion but that was it.

But he was stuck under the cable which meant we couldn’t get the helicopter in. We abseiled and packaged him up.

What is the window you have to rescue someone after an avalanche?

You only get about half an hour.

Gosh, that’s not long.

Yeah. When an avalanche happens, the ski field deals with it.

We are second response. So we are called in for the aftermath, body rescue or searching. When we get there it is a bit darker and a bit

more gruesome. ​Can you remember a rescue in an avalanche?

I’ve done a couple of wee small ones. Not a big one. Usually you’ve got your transceiver. You find a mate dig him out, brush him off.

Is that an actual rescue you’ve done?

Yeah, a mate buried up to his waist. We dug him out. That was in the back country out the back of (Mt) Cheeseman.

Bet he bought the beers after?

(Laughing) He got tumbled

good – he was a bit shaken not stirred.

What was the last rescue your team did?

We did a truck crash in Hunderlees past Cheviot there. We pulled a truck out of a canyon but we had to find the driver first. He was buried under a whole heap of mud. It was a police job we were aiding.

You mentioned you used to work for Mt Cook Rescue. What was that like?

You get a few body recoveries there. Mt Cook has a high rate of attrition. You might get 10 injuries a year or a couple of deaths during the summer season because the mountain is pretty dangerous.

The terrain is getting harder with global warming. The glaciers are retreating and things are falling down. There is no more glue holding it together i.e the snow.

How do you handle the emotional toll of body recovery?

I’ve done so many of them now, I’m numb to it really. I’m not personally attached to them so it is easier. You just get on with it.

You do spend a few days thinking about it, you know, the visual you have if it is a bad one. Police give really good support The last few we’ve been to have

worked out well, the people have been okay.

Let’s hear about those ones.

Yeah, so up at Mt Rolleston, Arthurs Pass, last year, we got called in because a couple were overdue. There was some pretty gnarly country that the LandSAR couldn’t get into. So we had a scan in the helicopter going up and down having a look around and we couldn’t find anyone. So we flew back up the valley and we just barely saw a hand waving below a rock in a river bed in this really gnarly gorge. We had to land the chopper and take all the doors and windows off, take all the gear out. Then fly up with a big rope underneath the helicopter.

You had to get rid of the doors?

Why?

To make it lighter. Because when you are plucking people out of nowhere you need to make the helicopter as light as possible. When you have four burly rescuers plus a pilot they are less manoeuvrable. We put a 25m rope on, attached ourselves on a harness – a bit like a tea bag. We grabbed them, hooked them onto the harness and took ‘em away. We saved two people, they sort of got into a bad spot.

What did you get a detention for in school?

For farting in class once. I had an Asian English teacher and farted in class and she told me to get out – caused a bit of ruckus at the time. It was just one of those loud ones that everyone cracks up about.

MBIE confirms it; you can’t trust EQC/Fletchers

By Bryan Staples, CEO Earthquake Services Over many months, some of us have been sounding the alert on dodgy repairs, especially foundation work. Now to its credit, MBIE, the Government department for building, is so concerned about repairs that every home that has had sub-floor work is to be inspected.

Gerry Brownlee is in damage control, trying to suggest much remedial work will be minor, denying EQC and Fletchers are to blame and pointing to ‘cowboy’ builders.

When I used that phrase in an earlier column, EQC’s Ian Simpson complained to the Advertising Standards Authority. His credibility is now completely shot and he has to go. Even in a banana republic bad generals sometimes get sacked.

The truth is now out there; you cannot trust EQC or Fletchers. We have had to fight EQC for many of our clients over shoddy repairs like Sam Thompson’s Woolston home foundations, repaired with a chair leg and particle board.

Why would anyone now trust EQC or Fletchers to manage and oversee necessary repairs which they refused to acknowledge in the first place? Fletchers took $1b off taxpayers but are washing their hands of any responsibility.

IAG is the first insurer to review its own dodgy repairs. Remember the MBIE guidelines were a minimal standard and a long, long way from the insured guarantee

of ‘as new’ that is part of most insurance policies.

You simply cannot rely on insurers or the EQC to do these reviews.

They must have hoped this would all blow over. MBIE got to inspect 100 houses selected out of a list of 200 provided by EQC and insurers. Even with this stacked deck, MBIE saw enough to demand every foundation repair be inspected. I salute these brave officials. I doubted they would deliver such a finding. They drafted the guidelines which allow (minor) earthquake repair work, including foundations, to be done without a building consent. They explicitly stated these guidelines did not replace the need to comply with the Building Act and Building Code. That put the onus on EQC and Fletchers to ensure repairs were carried out properly. Instead they turned a blind eye while cowboy builders drove a bulldozer through that limited exemption. Responsibility rests with Ian Simpson at EQC, with Fletchers and ultimately Gerry Brownlee.

I think this issue is the turning point for the people of Christchurch. One Government agency has exposed the major shortcomings of another; it is time for some real accountability. I again call for a Royal Commission into the ongoing disaster of repairs as we now see evidenced by MBIE’s move to have all foundation repairs inspected.

Cranford St changes on hold

By Andrew King CHANGES TO the Cranford and Westminster Sts intersection have been put on hold while more information is sought.

In a meeting on Wednesday the Shirley-Papanui Community Board decided to table the proposal until 10 pieces of information could be provided.

Business owners were pleased that they were able to halt the plan saying that it would damage their trade and make the area less appealing for future development if the changes were to go ahead.

Councillor Ali Jones asked if it was a case of a ‘square peg in a round hole’ scenario when looking at the three lanes that would take away parking from businesses.

The required information is: 1. Provide numbers of pedestrians outside of school opening/closing times.

2. Improvements to the cycle ways 3. Possibility for more parking in front of the businesses 4. Exploring the options of two lanes along Cranford St, not three.

5. Feedback from submitters on the updated plan.

6. Holistic overview of the whole area 7. Safe cycle access to the advanced stop boxes.

8. Emergency vehicle access when all three lanes are full, how they manage to get through.

9. Signalised pedestrian crossing outside of English Park.

10. Investigate what happens if nothing is done to the intersection.

In defence of the younger generation

YOUNG PEOPLE. Those couchburning, noisy creatures that sponge off their parents and waste their lives away …

Right?

Well, yes, sometimes.

But not always …

Now I’m going to put myself in the defence jury as a young person (I don’t have a mortgage or childinduced frown lines yet, so I think I qualify).

Why? Because young people get a really hard time. And I think it’s about time we set the record straight.

I believe that young people are doing amazing things – why? Because they are driven, and they’re crazy. You don’t see many adults pulling off 19 hours of straight studying, living on just $2 fried rice. They’ve got hopes and dreams, and they’re fearless.

We have some amazing young people here in Christchurch – many whom I have had the privilege of meeting through this daily show thingy I’m involved in.

People like Bridget Williams, UC student and Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board member who is starting up her own charity (Two Weeks Without – check it out on facebook!).

The idea is, you go without something for two weeks (shoes, coffee, sugar …) and raise money

YOU KNOW you’ve made it as a prankster when your fake McDonald’s sign draws the adoration of fellow travelers and the ire of the park service in a remote part of Australia.

An “artist” caused a commotion in June by erecting a McDonald’s “opening soon” sign, 200km from the edge of the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve. Taking it down required a park ranger to take a major detour.

The prankster drove into the desert sometime during June and put up the sign, which can light up at night and makes for a striking eyesore in the flatland. Since then, fellow travellers have signed their names on it.

But the Australian Government dispatched a ranger from Port Augusta who then made a 12-hour trek into the desert to take it down. A spokesman said: “It is very humorous but we particularly don’t want people searching for a sign off the tracks, damaging the fragile landscape and putting themselves potentially at risk in a very remote location.’’

Rosemary roasted beef

Wonderful served with a Syrah.

Serves 6 Ingredients 1.3 kgs Roast beef, lean, eg topside 3 Tbsp Olive oil 8 rashers Streaky bacon 2 Carrots 2 Parsnips 300g Pumpkin, peeled and seeded 6 Yams 6 cloves Garlic 2 tsp Dried rosemary 3 sprigs Fresh rosemary Directions Preheat the oven to 200 deg C. Lightly oil a roasting pan.

Ensure the beef is at room

temperature. Wrap the bacon rashers around the meat to almost cover.

Peel and chop the carrots, parsnips and pumpkin into thick chunks. Place in the roasting pan with the yams and garlic and toss with a little olive oil. Season. Sprinkle with the dried rosemary. Place the meat on top. Top with some fresh rosemary.

Roast for 1 hour for medium or 1¼ hours for medium to well done.

Remove the meat and vegetables to a serving platter. Tent with foil. Cover with a towel.

Stand for 15 minutes before carving.

Deglaze the roasting pan with red wine. Use the juices to prepare a sauce or gravy.

Hints for making the most of your roast Ensure the meat is at room temperature before placing it in the oven. Weigh the meat to calculate the cooking time. Use a meat thermometer to take any guesswork out of the cooking time.

Cover the roast with foil after removing from the oven. Top with a thick towel and rest for at least 15 minutes (depending on the size) before carving.

To help make a dark gravy, lightly brown the flour in a small, dry pan before adding to the pan juices and/or stock. Or place a couple of tablespoons of flour in a corner of the roasting pan.

Directions Set oven to 180 deg C. In a small pot, combine the hoisin and soy sauces, honey, vinegar, star anise, ginger, zest and juice.

Simmer for a few minutes until slightly thickened. Set aside.

Lay the sheets of baking paper on the bench. (4 sheets baking paper, 30cm x 30cm) In the centre of each, place one half of each bok choy and a fillet of salmon.

Drizzle sauce over each. Sprinkle the spring onions and beans on and any extra sauce.

Fold the paper into parcels, and secure with wooden peg if necessary and place on a baking tray.

Bake in the oven for 20min. Have a peep to ensure the salmon is cooked before removing from the oven.

Serve each parcel on a dinner plate with a bowl of rice.

Young athletes eyeing US Attending college in the United States on a sports scholarship is becoming an increasingly popular option for young athletes trying to further their careers.

Andrew Voerman looks at what it involves IT IS easy to see the appeal of playing sport on scholarship at an American college.

Getting to train in state-of-theart facilities, play in intense competitions, mix with other highly skilled players, and learn from experienced coaches is one thing.

Getting to study towards a degree, and receive qualifications that will set you up for a career if and when your sporting one ends is another.

Getting to do both, and have most, if not all, of it paid for, sounds like a fairy tale.

However, it is becoming an increasingly popular reality for young Cantabrians, who are looking stateside as they come to the end of their high school days.

Scholarships, which can be worth upwards of $10,000 per year, are available in more than 20 sports, with basketball, field hockey, golf, soccer, tennis, and volleyball among those proving popular with New Zealanders.

The Star knows of at least 30 Cantabrians who are either at US colleges already, or about to start their first year, a group that includes Tall Ferns international Tessa Boagni, who is at the beginning of her second year at California State University, Northridge, and age-group soccer internationals Lauren Dabner and Lily Alfeld, who are starting their first and second years respectively, at Texas Tech and Louisiana State.

Like ours, the American college year runs from the end of one summer to the beginning of the next, which in their case, means from August to June.

There are several organisations which run college competitions, but by far the largest is the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which counts nearly 1100 different schools among its members, spread across three divisions, which in turn hand out about $2.7 billion worth of scholarships each year.

Teams compete in conferences, which tend to be split along geographic lines – the PAC-12, for example, includes schools on the west coast, near to the Pacific Ocean, while the SEC, or Southeastern Conference, includes schools on the opposite side of the country, from Texas along to Florida – before the top sides come together at the end of the season for the national championships, which often involve a knockout

If any are interested, they begin a conversation, first with Jessica, and then with the athletes themselves, by email, then over Skype and by phone, and in some cases, face-to-face at a campus visit.

That conversation might be over quickly, or it might last for several months, as both athlete and coach try to figure out if what they can offer is right for the other.

College coaches have a limited number of scholarships to offer, and a pool of thousands of athletes to choose from, so there are many of these conversations going on, but eventually, they have to end, and if an athlete has proven themselves, they will be offered a scholarship.

Between last year’s class and this one, Pullar has helped 14 young athletes receive them, mostly to schools in the NCAA’s top division, with another three already lined up for next year, and more than a dozen others currently going through the recruiting process – she is even working with students who are targeting the class of 2019 to make their move.

Her company isn’t the only one that exists to help New Zealanders make the move to US, but it is one of two to have a Cantabrian connection – former Tall Black Mark Dickel’s Mainland Eagles Academy, set up to help South Island basketballers prepare themselves to try and receive scholarships, is the other.

Nor are the athletes she has helped send over the only ones doing so – there are plenty who have gone through the process on their own, or with the help of another recruiting firm.

One of those is basketballer Boagni, who earlier this year talked to The Star about her freshman experience.

A member of the CSUN Matadors (every college has its own mascot), she made valuable contributions as they won the Big West conference, then went down fighting in the first round of the national championship, where they played the much higherranked Stanford, before coming home for the summer, where she cracked the Tall Ferns for the first time, playing for them against Japan at home in Christchurch.

She described the campus experience as being just like it looked on TV and in the movies, and said it had been pretty full on.

“It’s definitely hard to manage your sport and your education.

“But you’re a student athlete and they put student first for a reason – because we’re here for that and we’re also lucky enough to play basketball.”

Summing it up, she said: “I literally do nothing but eat, sleep, play basketball and go to school.”

Which, in a nutshell, is what it’s all about, and why more and more Cantabrians are looking to the States – a lifestyle like that is very hard to come by in New Zealand.

Moss in Lawns

Rachel Vogan looks at the productive world of social climbers that are good enough to eat

Moss is created by cool, moist, shaded areas around your lawn, or damaged areas of grass. Moss is a symptom of unhealthy grass, resulting in poor grass growth, which in turn causes areas of moss to develop.

SOMETIMES WE need to be reminded of how multipurpose and functional some plants are.

The idea of planting climbers to cover ugly walls, screen views from prying eyes and to protect you from the harsh rays of the sun is nothing new, but choosing edible climbing plants is catching on at a rate of knots.

With smaller sections and limited space, maximising all available garden area to feed oneself or family is the only options for those living in apartments, multiplexes and in flats. The more crops you can grow vertically, the larger an outdoor space looks and feels.

Harvesting vegetables and fruits without having to bend over is an added bonus, and for me, there is no better way to pick them than at the end of the day with a tipple in hand on a warm evening just before dinner.

An oldie but a goodie! Grapes are wonderful long-term options; they provide both bunches of juicy bounty in autumn and loads of leafy, green matter for nine months of the year. A little patience is required with this crop.

Kiwifruit

One of the best cover-up fruiting and climbing plants has to be kiwifruit. Whether you like the green, gold or miniature varieties, these are a hardy and reliable option for growing over fences, pergolas, archways and frames. It is important to plant a male and a female variety, as one pollinates the other. In some cases, both are grafted onto the one plant (ensure you check when buying new plants). The vines lose their leaves in winter, so it is a great option for planting over pergolas where winter sun is welcomed with open arms.

Passionfruit

Care for a little passion, anyone? Passionfruit is adaptable to life in the garden or grown in larger containers or planter boxes. They do need protection from severe cold weather, and plants do grind to a halt in winter though. Once passionfruit has its root system actively growing, it quickly begins to throw out loads of new shoots and growth. To keep them in check, prune after fruiting and as they are a very rampant vine, it pays to be a little ruthless. A side application of fruit tree fertiliser or citrus fertiliser in spring should set you up for a good crop next year.

SUPPORT

All climbing plants need something to cling to, climb up or through. You could use twine, wire netting, mesh, another plant or tree, a pergola, archway or wigwam to support the growing plant. The list is as long as your imagination. Old wagon wheels look fabulous.

Compromising on sunlight never pays off.

To ensure a maximum harvest, position edible climbers somewhere they will reap the benefits of the sun’s rays. Stalwarts such as kiwifruit, passionfruit and grapes, will cope

with their roots in shade, and as long as the stems and branches reach up to the sun, they are happy.

Things that create this problem may be one or several of the following: Water clogged soil in areas; shade created by large trees and shrubs; areas affected by grass-grub, brown beetle or piranha all of which then leaves your lawn exposed, with damaged grass and grass roots.

So how do you sort your moss issues out?

Start by pruning trees and shrubs to allow more sunlight and airflow across your lawn.

Check what kind of soil you have underfoot.

Is it heavy, hard compact soil? Is there a lot of clay in your base soil that causes grass to have trouble growing? Does water pool in areas when it rains? If yes, these conditions all inhibit drainage/aeration.

To improve aeration in your lawn, take a garden fork and work it deep into the soil to create air holes for ventilation. To help keep these holes open, you can sprinkle sand or pumice through the area which will help with both aeration and drainage. If your drainage problem is more serious, then you can try to encourage water run-off by digging small deep channels in your garden or edges of your lawn. If it’s pooling, creating large puddles or sunken areas, maybe having a reputable company advise you on how to take measures to deal with the problem.

So now you’ve fixed the cause, it is time to treat the symptom. MOSS! Try to rake out as much as possible with a good sturdy rake or scorer then apply some moss killer. Follow the directions and wait 2-3 weeks for results. Once the moss has died, it’s time to sow more grass seed. Rake the area again to remove any remaining dead moss spores and help prepare the area for sowing more seed.

Once seed has germinated and has grown to approx. 5-7cm high, fertilise with Oderings Lawn Replenish, which can be applied to new or established lawns. Water well especially if it’s hot/dry or windy conditions. Remember not to mow your lawns too short, as grass may become compromised resulting in damaged grass roots.

Could you please advise me of the best manure or fertiliser you would recommend for olive trees in the home garden, particularly to stimulate the production of fruit?

Olives are not gross feeders of normal fruit tree fertilisers. Applying normal or excessive amounts of fertilisers to young or aged olive trees will encourage excessive vegetative growth, while in no way aiding the production of fruit.

It usually does not take much to grow an olive tree, apart from choosing the right variety, selecting the right site to grow them and keeping them pruned to keep fruit low.

Olives commence fruiting as the plants mature, around approximately 5-6 years after planting. To ensure heavy cropping of your olive tree it is important to select the cultivar that is most appropriate for your region, as this does vary throughout New Zealand. Talk to your local experts at the garden centre for guidance when selecting olives for your garden.

Thompson, Lousi back for final home match BODENE Thompson returns from injury and Sione Lousi has been recalled for the Vodafone Warriors’ final home match of the season against the North Queensland Cowboys at Mt Smart Stadium tomorrow.

Thompson has recovered from the ankle injury which ruled him out of the last three matches against Cronulla, St George Illawarra and Penrith while Lousi

has been brought up from the New South Wales Cup side after last appearing in the NRL in the round 20 loss to Manly on July 25.

The 25-year-old Lousi has been named as a starting second rower for his fifth NRL appearance this year and the 47th of his career while Thompson, who played in each of the first 18 games of the campaign, is on the bench.

They’re in the side for prop Sam Rapira and second rower Raymond Faitala-Mariner. Rapira is serving a one-match suspension for a dangerous throw charge in the Penrith encounter while Faitala-Mariner will turn out for the NSW Cup side against the Panthers.

“It’s good being able to call on the experience Bodene and Sione give us,” said Warriors head

coach Andrew McFadden.

“We’ve lost even more experience with Sam being suspended and the fact is we were already light in that area in any case. We need the experience to balance the number of young players we have in our side.

“Bodene has had a great season for us and Sione had a terrific game for the NSW Cup side at the weekend.”

By Andrew Voerman SUNDAY’S national knockout cup semi-final has been a long time coming for Coastal Spirit.

By the time they kick-off, it will have been 19 days since they last took a shot in anger, on their way to winning their Reta Fitzpatrick Cup semi-final against Cashmere Technical on August 4.

But that doesn’t mean they will be rusty when they take to the field against Massey University in Palmerston North, eyeing a third trip to the final in the space of five years.

They’ve been doing plenty to keep their form up over the past few weeks, says coach Alana Gunn.

“We’ve organised games and we’ve tried to keep the momentum going over the last three weeks leading into this game, so I don’t think we’ll suffer too much from (the gap).”

Coastal finished their league season strongly, beating rivals Tech and Universities in successive must-win encounters to claim their fourth Mainland title in a row.

They then went and beat Tech again, booking their place in one cup final, and now have their sights set on booking their place in another this weekend.

Since Coastal emerged as a force to be reckoned with nationally in 2011, they have made it to at least the semi-finals each time.

Kereru will play Lincoln University in Tuesday night’s club netball final, after beating Technical 47-45 in their semi-final this week.

Challenge for players on wet pitch LAST SATURDAY was one for the diehards.

Parents, players, and fans all around the city would have woken up to the sound of rain smashing against their roofs, as winter reared its ugly head and decided to make a closing statement.

More than 21mm of rain fell on Saturday, by far the most in the past month – the next highest was 8.2mm a week before – making it the worst day for winter sport we’ve had all season.

And to be fair, it has been pretty good.

If you ignore the last two weeks, I would struggle to think of another Saturday where the urge to stay in bed has overwhelmed the urge to get up, and go out and around the grounds.

But even with the rain bucketing down, and that urge growing stronger and stronger with every drop, it was an easy decision to get up, and make my way to St Andrew’s College for the first game of the day – an under-16 section 1 rugby semi-final, between the hosts and Shirley Boys’ High School.

That may seem like an odd game for a sports reporter to be going to, especially given the weather,

but I had a good reason.

The referee in that game was a bloke named Kyle Knowles, who sits about a metre and a half away from me during the week, and it was pretty much my last chance to see him in action, something I’d
