Risk increases but better financial returns promised BY TOM DOUDNEY More risk but better returns for ratepayers – that’s the focus of a new strategy which proposes increasing the district council’s property holdings. The move would see the district council increase the value of its property holdings from $10 million to $60 million. This would see property making up 28.2 per cent of its investments,

as opposed to the current 5.3 per cent. The change is outlined in a draft commercial property strategy. District council property and commercial manager Douglas Marshall acknowledged that investing more in property and less in cash holdings meant taking on increased risk. However, he said the new strategy outlined measures to minimise risk, such as restrictions on the

type of tenant for the property, the amount invested in any property, where the property was located and the length of lease period. “A prudent investor will have a mix of investments to balance the returns and risks,” Mr Marshall said. “Council currently only has five per cent of its investment in property and being a prudent investor should have a higher percentage.” The district council’s current

property portfolio includes just two properties generating a commercial return. These are offices in Izone for contracting company Sicon Ferguson and bus manufacturer Designline. District councillor Grant Miller, who chairs the audit and risk committee, said Selwyn’s growth would create opportunities, particularly in Rolleston and Lincoln, by bringing in more potential tenants. •Turn to page 2

BY TOM DOUDNEY A decision to scrap a proposal that would have introduced district-wide rates for halls, community centres and reserves has been labelled “bitterly disappointing.” Rolleston Residents Association chairwoman Lynley Shaw said the move by the district council to scrap the proposed rate while bringing in district-wide rates for water and wastewater would put residents in the urban areas at a disadvantage. Up until now all these rates have all been targeted. The Long Term Plan, which includes the setting of rates, has now been finalised and is set for approval at tomorrow’s district council meeting. The district council has signalled its intention to review the rating of halls, community centres and reserves in future. Mrs Shaw said that it had been largely the residents of urban areas like Rolleston who would have benefited from a district-wide rate for halls, community centres and reserves and who lost out on water and wastewater, while the reverse was true for rural residents. Including all these rates district-wide would have balanced out the wins and

losses for different areas. “Now, the council has agreed to let a lot of the rural areas have a major win and the urban areas a major loss and no offset,” Mrs Shaw said. “I think that’s bitterly disappointing.” Mayor Kelvin Coe said that the proposal for district-wide rates for halls, community centres and reserves had failed to attract the same level of support as the water and wastewater rates and therefore more discussion was needed. “There were some issues raised that has prompted that recommendation. Those issues have not gone away so we have to go back to square one and have another think about the issue.” Mr Coe said one of the main issues was about deciding how to equitably fund facilities which were based in larger towns but used by people from all around the district. Mrs Shaw was concerned that any proposal to introduce a district-wide rate in future might now attract even stronger opposition from rural areas as they had nothing to gain from supporting it. “There is no win for the rural areas now – they have already got their win first.”

Problem trees concern residents BY TOM DOUDNEY Rolleston residents are up in arms over a black sooty mould spread by roadside trees which they say is coating their properties and ruining their gardens. Overbury Cres resident Linda Ellwood said her garden, which won a Community Pride award from the Rolleston Residents Association, had been badly affected by the mould. A lavender bush had already died and other plants might follow suit. “I might lose all the camellias too, which I am not happy about,” she said. The source was an oak tree on the street bordering their property and the other oak trees which lined Overbury Cres and Dryden Ave were also spreading the mould. Hosing the plants down and applying Wet and Forget had not significantly improved the situation. Mrs Ellwood believed that since the oak trees were causing the problem, the district council should either replace them with a more suitable species or at least allow residents to replace them at their own cost. More spraying and pruning would also be helpful, she said. However, district council parks and reserves contracts manager Cameron Warr said the problem was not new or significant and wasn’t specifically related to oaks – nearly all trees were susceptible to it.

DISGRUNTLED: Overbury Cres residents Kay Dawe, Linda Ellwood and Andy Nash inspect mould which covers part of the offending oak trees. “The black sooty mould is caused by sap sucking insects, mainly scale and aphids, which are attracted to trees and shrubs in times of stress and often before leaf fall,” Mr Warr said. “The significantly dry summer we have had would have had an impact on this. Perfect conditions (warm with not much rainfall) meant there is more chance for the insects to reproduce and more insects mean more sugary secretion to which the mould grows on.” He said the problem might be reduced by frosts or by spraying.

HAVE YOUR SAY Have you had any problems with tree mould affecting your garden? Send your views to tom.doudney@starmedia.kiwi

“In severe cases or if the trees are significant – protected or important trees – the council would look at organising spraying but it is important to understand that spraying won’t necessarily work.” Mrs Ellwood said another important concern was for people with breathing and asthma problems.

”What risk is this black sap to our health as folks have to walk under these trees all along the footpaths?” Mr Warr said there was no evidence of any impact on health. “By contrast people are often more concerned about the health impacts of spraying trees and shrubs which is why we limit spraying to only what is necessary for plant or tree health.” Mrs Ellwood said a group of residents was planning to raise the matter with the Rolleston Residents Association.

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Yellow Shack fire

A generator being used during power cuts sparked a fire at Springfield’s Yellow Shack Cafe on Friday morning. The fire, which broke out shortly after midnight, spread from the generator to a wooden enclosure it was kept in and up a wall at the back of the building, making its way into the roof cavity. Springfield firefighter Joe McLellan said the fire had caused extensive damage to a small part of the building and the incident was a timely reminder for people to check their generators were ready and safe to operate for the rest of winter.

Funding could be sought for broadband upgrade BY TOM DOUDNEY

More Government funding could be sought to upgrade Selwyn’s broadband and mobile phone networks. However, Selwyn MP Amy Adams says residents in some areas have not been taking advantage of new levels of service already available after recent upgrades. District council chief executive David Ward has signalled his intention to recommend at tomorrow’s meeting that the district council put applications in for the funding assistance for ultra-fast broadband, Rural Broadband Initiative, and Mobile Black Spot Fund programmes. This comes after a district-wide survey on the provisions of these services received 630 responses. Comments focused on lack of coverage, the quality of coverage, and the impediments both scenarios had on households and businesses. Ms Adams, who is also communications minister, said Chorus figures showed the average internet speed in Selwyn’s rural areas had more than doubled thanks to the RBI. “The figures provided to me by Chorus show that the average copper line connection speed had in-

Unlike ultra-fast broadband in towns such as Lincoln and Rolleston, which is delivered via fibre, the Chorus part of RBI is delivered by copper phone lines

which have been upgraded to provide faster broadband. Most of the 46 cabinets around Selwyn have already been upgraded under the RBI. The remaining upgrades and their time frame for completion are Windwhistle in August, Greendale in September, Bankside in October, Southbridge in November, Springfield in May.

To honour those from Selwyn, a project was undertaken by volunteer historian Lynda Seaton on behalf of Selwyn Libraries to identify, research and record every soldier whose name was recorded on a World War 1 memorial in the district. To mark the centenary of the conflict, the Selwyn Times continues its weekly series, Soldiers of Selwyn. • Sergeant Robert Duff Robert Duff was born at Sefton on August 9, 1889, to Robert and Margaret Duff. Before enlisting on December 20, 1914, he was farming with his father at Irwell. Duff was assigned to the 3rd Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Battalion and embarked for Suez on February 14. He served at Gallipoli but as his statement of service is missing, it is unclear about his service again until October 12, 1915, when he was in 2nd General Hospital, Manchester. From there he was sent to Hornchurch on April 14, 1916 and back to field on May 12. Duff was wounded in the forearm and sent to England on September 20. By November he was well enough to go onto the convalescent section at Hornchurch and then to re-join his unit, 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, on June 17, 1917. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on July 25 and then to full Corporal on August 31. Finally he was sent to Corps School and on

October 29, four days after returning, he was promoted to Sergeant. Duff was killed in action on November 30, 1917, aged 24. He is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery and remembered on the Ellesmere County War Memorial’s Irwell plaque. • Maurice Dalby Carter Maurice Dalby Carter was born in Christchurch on June 14, 1894, to Henry Dalby and Amelia Amy Carter. Carter appears to have been farming at Springfield before enlisting on August 14, 1914. He was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Battalion and embarked for Egypt with the Main Body. He was sent to Gallipoli but was hospitalised on June 28, being sent firstly to St Georges Hospital, Malta, and then spending time in King George Hospital and Walton on Thames in England. It was January 23, 1916, when Carter arrived back in Alexandria and re-joined the battalion at Ismailia on the same day. After time training he was transferred to France where he was detached to the Light Trench Mortar Battery on May 20. He was promoted to Corporal on September 28 and then served

as temporary Sergeant throughout the following months, each time replacing another non-commissioned officer. On September 18, 1917, Carter was detached to the army Rest Camp and then the Reinforcement Camp presumably to train new arrivals. He finally re-joined his unit, 13th Company, 1st Battalion on October 25 and was killed in action on December 3, 1917, aged 23. The New Zealand Division were responsible for the right sector of the front which was overlooked by the ruins of Polderhoek Chateau, occupied by the Germans. On December 3, the 1st Canterbury and 1st Otago Battalions of the 2nd Brigade mounted an attack against the chateau. The attack, launched at midday in an attempt to surprise the Germans, proved a relative failure and the chateau remained in enemy hands. Carter was killed and, as his body was not found or identified, his name is on the Buttes New British Cemetery (New Zealand) Memorial to the Missing, as well as on the Springfield War Memorial. • George Lawrence Crossen George Lawrence Crossen was born at Brookside on November 15, 1893, to Thomas and Ellen Crossen. He was working as a farm labourer at Kirwee before enlisting on October 18, 1915. He had previous military experience having served with 13th Regiment. Crossen was assigned to 9th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company, and embarked for Suez on January 8, 1916. He arrived on February 8, suffering from measles, and was sent to the New Zealand Isolation camp at Zeitoun. He was later admitted to No 4 Auxiliary Hospital at Heliopolis and not discharged to duty until March 9. Crossen joined the 1st Battal-

ion at Ismailia on March 18 and embarked for France. A notation on his record shows that he was attached to the Mayor for fire duties at Armentieres from August 1-19. During fighting at the Somme on September 27, he suffered a severe wound to his elbow. He was sent to 3rd Stationary Hospital in Rouen, then evacuated to England where he spent the next few months at the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley and later the No 1 NZ General Hospital at Brockenhurst. On January 30, he was classed as unfit and embarked for New Zealand on March 18. A medical board was held in Christchurch on May 29 and the findings were that a piece of shrapnel had destroyed his right elbow. In the words of the medical report “the lower end of the humerus was pulverised” and the right arm was useless. Crossen was sent to Coronation Hospital in Christchurch but during his stay he was exposed to tuberculosis and it was this that killed him on October 13, 1919, age 26. He is buried in Lincoln Cemetery and remembered on the Rolleston Roll of Honour. • Edward Claude Tunmer Edward Claude Tunmer was born at Ellesmere on June 9, 1893, to Edward and Mary Ann Tunmer. He was a farm hand for his father at Ellesmere before enlisting on April 4, 1916. He had prior military experience with the 13th Canterbury and West Coast Regiment. Tunmer was assigned to C Company, 15th Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Battalion, and embarked with them for England

on July 26. After a brief rest he left for France and, on November 8, joined the Battalion in the field and was posted to no 13 Company. With the crowded conditions he, like many in the days before inoculation, contracted mumps and was admitted to No 7 General Hospital at St Omer. He re-joined his company on April 20, 1917, but a month later was detached to the Reinforcement Camp, perhaps for retraining after his long period away. He re-joined the battalion on June 19 and fought with them through the Ypres campaign. Tunmer was killed in action on December 3, 1917, aged 25 during the attack on Polderhoek Chateau. His body was not found or identified and his name is on the Buttes New British Cemetery (New Zealand) Memorial to the Missing, Ypres, as well as the Springston War Memorial. • Lance-Corporal Henry Withers Henry Withers was born at Southbridge on December 1, 1895, to Drummond and Mary Jane Withers. He was working as a stable hand at Sockburn before enlisting on April 5, 1916. Withers was assigned to C Company, 15th Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Battalion, and embarked for England on July 26, as a Lance Corporal. In England he reverted to the ranks before leaving for France on October 20. He was posted to no 12 Company, 1st Battalion Canterbury Regiment, and joined them in the field on November 8, 1916. In early 1917, Withers was treated for scabies. On April 15, he got in trouble for disobeying a superior officer and was sentenced to 91 days of field punishment no 2.

the sick and wounded This involved being shackled in irons for up to two hours a day, although it would not have been for more than 21 days. Withers was later detached to the school of instruction on July 29 for two weeks. He was appointed Lance Corporal on October 12 and sent to Brigade School for a week. He was back in time to take part in the attack on the December 3 attack on Polderhoek Chateau and it was here that he was killed in action, aged 21. Another soldier reported that “In the attack on the Chateau when he had gone about 25 yards Lance Corporal Withers was hit in the back of the leg by a piece of shell and obviously wounded. He evacuated into a shell hole where I was and asked me to dress his wound. He was very bad and I do not think he could have lived.” He is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Ypres, and remembered on the Prebbleton War Memorial. • Sydney Stephens Sydney Stephens was born at Dunsandel on August 21, 1890, to William and Carol Stephens. He was a member of the Dunsandel Football Club and was working at Dunsandel as a labourer before enlisting on October 13, 1915. He had previous military experience with the 13th Canterbury and Coast Regiment. Stephens was assigned to C Company, 3rd Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and embarked with them for Suez on February 5, 1916. After a brief period for training he left for France on April 7, serving throughout the campaigns without any issues and was still with his unit on May 18, 1917. However, Stephens was wounded on June 7, in the battle for Messines and spent about a month in hospital. He re-joined his unit briefly in August before being granted a

month’s leave to England. He returned to the Rifle Brigade on September 20 and was killed in action on December 6, 1917, aged 27. The Rifle Brigade were holding the line in the Becelaere Sector not far from the notorious Polderhoek Chateau position. He is buried in the Polygon Wood Cemetery, Ypres, and remembered on the Dunsandel War Memorial as well as his family grave stone. • Sergeant Edric Davidson Reid Edric Davidson Reid was born at Dunedin on December 10, 1894, to the Reverend James Swanson and Annie Jane Reid. He spent time as a tutor at Gilby’s Commercial School and had previous military experience with the 12th Canterbury Regiment. Reid enlisted on December 15, 1915, and was assigned to C Company, 13th Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Battalion. He was promoted to Corporal on December 15 and then to Sergeant on February 6, 1916. He embarked for England on May 31. In Sling Camp, he reverted to the ranks. However, it was probably at this time that he was retained in a non-commissioned officers’ camp at Andover, during which time he topped the list in an examination in which there were about 800 competitors. Completing the course he was appointed Corporal in August and then Sergeant on September 25, the day before leaving for France. Reid joined 1st Battalion Canterbury Regiment on October 13 where he relinquished his sergeant’s rank. On July 17, 1917, he was promoted again to Lance Corporal and then detached to the School of Instruction on August 1, re-joining the battalion six days later. From October 12 onward he acted as temporary Sergeant, substituting for other non-com-

missioned officers who were either wounded or on leave. Reid was killed in action on December 13, 1917, aged 23. At this time the 1st Canterbury Battalion took over the sector known as Judge Cross Roads. He is buried in the Polygon Wood Cemetery and remembered on the Dunsandel War Memorial. • Signaller George Willan George Willan was born at Lowther Village, England, on February 19, 1896, to John James and Annie Willan. He came to New Zealand with his parents in 1909 and when he was older, engaged in farming pursuits as a ploughman at Tai Tapu. He had previous military experience with K Company, the Coastal Defence unit set up soon after war broke out. He appears to have had a farm accident for the examining doctor noted that the end phalanges on the thumb and first finger of his left hand were missing but his grip was quite good so he was passed fit. Willan enlisted on June 28, 1916, and was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 9th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, G Company. He embarked for England on October 16. He was posted to the 4th Infantry Brigade at Codford on May 21, 1917, where he lost two days’ pay and was confined for 48 hours as punishment for having been absent without leave overnight on May 18-19 while at Sling Camp. On May 23 he joined 3rd Battalion Auckland Infantry and

was posted to 16th Company. His obituary notes that he had undergone special training and qualified for his signaller’s badge. After serving his time for being absent he left for France on May 28. Willan survived the fighting at Ypres before being killed on December 28, 1917, aged 21, when a shell landed in the doorway of his dugout. He is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery and remembered on the Tai Tapu War Memorial. • Rifleman Ewen Taylor Ewen Taylor was born at Leeston on June 4, 1875, to Ewen and Annie Taylor. At the time of his enlistment, on December 12, 1916, his father was dead and his mother was partially dependant. He was employed as groom and gardener at Ravensbourne. Taylor was assigned to New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 24th Reinforcements, G Company, and embarked for Devonport on April 5, 1917. He joined the Division in the field in France on August 8 and was posted to A Company, 3rd Brigade, 4th Battalion the next day. In September he was treated for scabies before returning to the field on October 8, 1917. Taylor was killed in action on January 8, 1918, aged 43. At that time the Rifle Brigade was back in the front line with the 4th Battalion in the Nord sub-sector around the remains of the hamlet of Noordemdhoek. They were relieved on January 8, on which day there was a severe snowstorm. On the night of the relief the enemy attempted to raid the point of the salient at Joiner’s Avenue in the 4th Battalion line. Taylor is buried in the Oxford Rd Cemetery and remembered on the Ellesmere County War Memorial’s Leeston plaque.

• George Gordon McKay George Gordon McKay was born at Halkett on August 3, 1889, to George and Mary McKay. He was working as a general contractor at Halkett before enlisting on January 26, 1917, and had previously been rejected for military service because of appendicitis. McKay was assigned to the 27th Reinforcements, Specialists Company, Machine-Gun Section and embarked for Devonport on June 12, 1917. After arriving in France, he was afflicted with measles and admitted to No 46 Stationary Hospital on November 1 and then on to No 13 Convalescent Depot at Dauville which had previously been a resort for the wealthy. He seems to have spent Christmas there. He was sent to join the 2nd Battalion Canterbury Regiment in the field at Polygon Wood on January 20 and was killed in action only four days later. McKay is buried at the Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood, and remembered on a memorial inside the grounds of the Halkett Presbyterian Church. • Selwyn Libraries welcomes your feedback or any information you can provide regarding these soldiers. GRASSROOTS SPORT

Playing golf overseas all in the plan BY ANDREW VOERMAN

Going from making putts at Ashburton and Harewood to potentially sinking them in Alabama and Hawaii is quite the leap. But for Hororata’s Nicole Hamilton-Cross, it has just become a reality. Late last month, she was offered a scholarship to attend and play golf at Western Illinois University in the United States, which runs for four years and is worth more than $100,000. May 23 was the exact date, one Nicole will remember forever as the one when she realised a dream she had held ever since she was a little kid. The next big date will come in January, when she will make the journey to Western Illinois, in the town of Hacomb, 300km southwest of the windy city of Chicago, the third-largest in the US. Nicole, who is 17 and a student at Darfield High School, first started playing golf as a five-year-old, but began taking it seriously when she turned eight, giving up all other sporting pursuits to focus purely on the fairways and greens. She says heading overseas was always in her plans. “I knew that if I wanted to progress as far as I possibly could with my golf, I needed to get somewhere out of New Zealand.”

and emailed with about 20 of them – that was pretty amazing, to even be acknowledged by some who were of such a high calibre.” Eventually she narrowed them down to five to keep talking to, hoping to get the offer of a scholarship, and when the offer came from Western Illinois last month, she found it easy to say yes. Not only does Western Illinois have a top coach, Lia Biehl Lukkarinen, who has been there for more than a decade, but it is also a top-50 programme nationwide, and has a highly regarded forensic chemistry department, the field in which Nicole intends to study. She says forensics is something that has always fascinated her. “I’ve always been very interested in the sciences, but then I suppose UP AND DOWN: Nicole Hamilton-Cross, seen here playing TV shows have had a small at Clearwater earlier this month (left), and in California at the influence on it. Upset rugby win for Lincoln High School BY JAIMIE KEAY

Lincoln High School have caused a major upset in the UC Championship secondary school rugby competition, beating 2013 champions Marlborough Boys’ College 27-25 to gain their first win of the season. Lincoln went into the game on the back of five losses and one draw, and were not expected to give Marlborough much trouble. Down 22-5 at half-time, Lincoln had their backs against the wall but soon started to force Marlborough into defensive lapses as well as winning the penalty count. Lincoln coach Mikaele Tuu’u put the second half resurgence down to attitude. “The boys found that belief and determination and just got stuck in . . . our senior plays really stepped up when we needed them to.” With five minutes remaining, Lincoln scored their fifth try to take the lead. It was a nervous final few minutes after they gave away a kickable penalty 40m out, but Marlborough instead opted to kick for touch. The move didn’t pay off for Marlborough, with Thomas Cockburn getting up in the lineout and forcing the knock on to end the game. “It was the longest three and a

With six weeks remaining in the competition, Lincoln are well out of the play-off race but will be out to salvage pride in their final appearances. It doesn’t get any easier, with their next game against defending champions and table-toppers Christchurch Boys’ High School at home on Saturday. “We have nothing to loose going into next week’s game and we won’t be intimidated by Boys High, we just need to take it to them, bring the physicality and give it our all,” Tuu’u said.

WINNERS: The Rolleston under-16 rugby side which won the country combined competition. In the final they beat Celtic of Ashburton 27-17. Starting the season in section one of the competition the Rolleston side went unbeaten through round-robin. They then beat Rangiora’s Saracens in the semi-final before polishing off the season with the win over Celtic.

Rolleston Central Health is celebrating its first birthday! ON June 30th, the staff at Rolleston Central Health will be celebrating the health centre’s first birthday.

S

INCE opening one year ago, the health centre has grown substantially with patient numbers having almost trebled and on average 25-30 new patients enrolling each week. The practice began with one doctor; Dr Philip Schroeder who was the first health professional to provide medical services in the area and who opened the first medical centre in Rolleston over 20 years ago. The original medical centre became so busy that it could not take on any new patients so Dr Schroeder established a purpose built facility in the new Rolleston Square. “Building a state of the art General Practice facility gave us the opportunity to create a new model of patient care,” says Dr Schroeder who says the challenges have all been positive. “We have a new yet experienced team of doctors, nurses and administrators who are able to deal with medical problems that arise and encourage wellness checks in a fresh way. As an Integrated Family Health Centre, we can offer multiple services under the one roof,” advises Dr Schroeder. For Dr Schroeder, the highlight of the year has been the ability to see patients cared for in a well-equipped facility and the opportunity to train an exceptional team who work well together. “We have expanded the General Practice services and procedures available and extended the hours. Along with our allied health professionals who include pharmacists, physiotherapists, a podiatrist, counsellor and osteopath, we are a one-stop shop for most eventualities so the people of Rolleston have better health care.”

The new facilities have enabled a nurse led approach to medical care where patients see a nurse before one of the doctors who now include Dr Schroeder, Dr Mary Warren, Dr Amanda Parkin, and Dr Alice Fenton. The nurses carry out more health care duties than would be the case in a traditional practice. As well as the normal administering vaccinations, blood pressure checks, laboratory tests, wound care and cervical smears they are also responsible for adult health screens, smoking cessation, diabetes management, weight loss support, and observation and IV treatment. Rolleston Central Health offers extended hours for scheduled appointments

Bad breath is painful Do you suffer from any of the following symptoms? • Head, neck or shoulder pain • Face or jaw pain • Clicking or locking of the jaw • Headache or migraine • Pain swallowing or lump in the throat • Referred pain, ringing or buzzing sensations in the ear • Voice irregularities or changes Have you ever considered that some of these symptoms can be a cause of dysfunctional breathing? Breathing pattern disorder (BPD) is a combination of individual symptoms which, on their own, may all be attributed to other causes, but collectively, may make up a breathing pattern disorder. Breathing pattern disorder can also be called hyperventilation syndrome or breathing dysfunction. Often the symptoms of BPD can be very subtle and the person is not aware that the possible cause of the symptoms is poor breathing mechanics.

Age old question answered Australian researchers say they have the answer to the question of nature versus nurture when it comes to human health. And it’s basically a draw, with scientists saying it’s a case of nature and nurture making equal contributions. Experts from the University of Queensland have reviewed almost every study of twins conducted worldwide over the last 50 years. The review, which involved 14.5 million sets of twins, found that on average the variation for human traits and diseases is 49 per cent genetic, and 51 per cent due to environmental factors. “There has still been conjecture over how much variation is caused by genetics and how much is caused by environmental factors – what people call nature versus nurture,” says Dr Beben Benyamin from UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute. “The findings show that we need to look at ourselves outside of a view of nature versus nurture, and instead look at it as nature and nurture.” While the part genetics and environmental factors play in human health is balanced for most of the traits studied, there are some exceptions. For example, risk for

The following symptoms are common for someone with BPD: • Frequent sighing and yawning • Breathing discomfort • Disturbed sleep • Erratic heartbeats • Feeling anxious and uptight • Pins and needles • Upset gut/nausea • Chest Pains • Shattered confidence • Tired all the time • Achy muscles and joints • Dizzy spells or feeling spaced out • Irritability or hypervigilance • Feelings of ‘air hunger’ A normal breathing pattern utilizes the diaphragm and the lower rib cage to help drive air into the lungs for it to be used by the body for normal bodily functions.

For this to occur efficiently breathing is best done through the nose which helps to warm and moisten the air before if reaches the air sacs in your lungs. Breathing is one of our most vital functions and a disordered breathing pattern can lead to a number of common everyday symptoms that are often misdiagnosed or misunderstood. BPD can be caused by biomechanical, psychological and physiological changes that can effect normal breathing and especially the mouth breathing pattern. This leads to increased respiratory accessory muscle activation, increased work of breathing all of which can add to musculo-skeletal issues, such as a jaw, head, neck or shoulder pain. Your physiotherapist can identify BPD through a physical assessment and using a validated questionaire. From there it is important to treat the musculoskeletal imbalances and restrictions that are linked to the altered breathing. It is also important to educate and retrain efficient breathing so that these symptoms do not return in the future. Peter Chum is a musculoskeletal physiotherapist who has an interest in treating orofacial pain with its particular relevance to normal breathing mechanics. He works with other medical practitioners to establish the cause of altered breathing and offers advice on retraining normal mechanics. Peter commonly works with singers and musicians who often suffer from neck and jaw pain or vocal problems attributed to putting stress on an inadequate breathing system.

The study compared the similarities of identical twins, who share all their genes, with those of nonidentical twins who share only half their genes. Professor Peter Visscher, also from the Queensland

A busy year on the roads

Are you new to Selwyn? Did you know there is a web page which helps new residents find and use Council services? Selwyn is the fastest growing district in New Zealand, and last year more than 3,000 people moved into the district. The new web page can help you find out how to apply for a building or resource consent, set up rubbish and recycling collection, join a library or a newcomers group and register your dog. It can also help you find out where local playgrounds, community centres and pools are, and provides links to Selwyn business, sport and recreation directories and more. To access the web page visit www.selwyn.govt.nz/newtoselwyn.

Road resealing work taking place during the summer

Road resealing work in Selwyn has been completed for the 2014/15 year.

Resealing work was undertaken on 48 sections of road in Selwyn over the past six months with a total of 74 kilometres resealed. 11 kilometres of this resealing was extra work which was completed using additional funding from NZTA, with Council’s share funded by the $60 targeted roading rate introduced in July 2014. This extra funding enabled the resealing of sections of Selwyn Road, Lincoln Rolleston Road, Springston Rolleston and Weedons Roads.

The extra roads to have resealing work completed are all roads with high traffic volumes which need regular resealing to prevent their condition deteriorating. A complete list of roads which have had resealing work completed over the last two years is available on the Council’s website, www.selwyn.govt.nz. The roading targeted rate introduced in July 2014 also allowed the Council to increase road rehabilitation work from 1 kilometre to 4.1 kilometres. The roads where rehabilitation work has been done are sections of Selwyn Lake Road, Southbridge Leeston Road, Leeston Dunsandel Road, Old Tai Tapu Road and Telegraph Road. “Road rehabilitation work is needed on roads which have a significant number of failures and require more than a repair and a reseal to maintain,” says Selwyn District Council Roading Engineer Mark Chamberlain. “The rehabilitation work involves digout repairs to the failed areas, a basecourse placed to an average depth of 150 mm over the entire road carriageway and a first coat seal being applied to the newly formed basecourse. This type of construction uses the strength of the existing road pavement as a base for the new carriageway.” Local roads in Selwyn are becoming increasingly busy. Vehicles now travel over 300 million kilometres a year on Selwyn roads – an 80% increase since 2001. Vehicle traffic has increased faster than population growth as the district’s population grew by 71% over this period. The additional road maintenance work is needed as both commuter traffic and heavy traffic such as milk tankers, trucks transporting construction materials and vehicles accessing new industrial areas, are increasing.

Join the fun at Selwyn Aquatic Centre’s Birthday Bash Selwyn Aquatic Centre turns two this month and we’re celebrating with a birthday bash. On Sunday 28 June between 11am and 3pm there’s a host of fun birthday activities planned. For youngsters, the movie Winnie the Pooh will be screening at 11.15am - relax and enjoy this family favourite from the comfort of the heated pools. From 1 to 3pm you can join in the fun of a pool party with inflatables, music and games. There’ll also be birthday cake, giveaways, a coffee cart and a sausage sizzle. Children under eight need to be accompanied by a parent and actively supervised in pools.

By selecting the ‘Health and Community Services’ link on the ‘New to Selwyn’ web page you can also access a 68-page guide to health and community services in Selwyn. The guide has information on a range of services including medical centres, dentists, school holiday programmes, education facilities and support services. Hard copies of both the Council’s information guide for residents and the health and community services guides are also available from Council libraries. Representation Review meetings to seek public feedback The Council is holding a series of meetings next month to seek public feedback on options for representation in Selwyn. These will look at possible changes to ward boundaries and the number of councillors, whether councillors should be elected across the whole district or within wards and whether there should be Community Boards. Feedback from these meetings will help the Council determine which options it recommends for formal consultation later in the year. Local councils are required to review representation arrangements at least once every six years. In Selwyn, changes are being considered to the existing ward boundaries as population growth has not occurred evenly across the district, with Selwyn central and Springs wards growing more quickly than other areas. The number of people per councillor is required to be within +/- 10% of the ratio for the district as a whole. This is designed to ensure approximate equality in representation. Public meetings to discuss options being considered as part of the representation review will be held at: · Darfield (Darfield Recreation & Community Centre) on Tuesday 7 July at 6pm · Rolleston (Council offices) on Tuesday 7 July at 8pm · Lincoln (Lincoln Events Centre) on Thursday 9 July at 6pm · Leeston (Leeston Community Room, next to library) on Thursday 9 July at 8pm

AVOID THE AA QUEUES IN JULY You may have heard that vehicle licensing fees are reducing from 1 July. Because of the coming changes to licensing fees many people have been registering their vehicles so that the license expires in June or July, in order to take advantage of the reduced fees. This means that AA agent offices are likely to be exceptionally busy in July as many people re-license their vehicles. To beat the queues you can license your vehicle online at www.nzta.govt.nz/online. It is slightly cheaper to license your vehicle online than at an agent but you need to do this a week before the license expires to allow time for your new license to be posted to you. SHEEP FOUND Seven sheep were found in the Leeston/Southbridge area over the past week. Please contact Animal Control on 03 347 2800 if they are yours or you know the owner.

Onions in all shapes and sizes BY TOD PALENSKI

How many savoury recipes can you think of that don’t call for onions? Stir fries, casseroles, quiches, pasta sauces – let’s face it; they all taste better with this very natural flavour enhancer. And while the round, brownskinned variety may be the first thing that springs to mind, don’t forget onions come in a range of forms that include the spring onion, red spring onion, red onion and pearl drop. Because they’re such a kitchen staple, in my mind it makes sense to have one or more of these plants flourishing in your garden at home. I bet the traditionalists among you will go for the pukekohe longkeeper with its brown skin and white flesh. This variety is known for its resistance to bolting, and ability to be stored for a long time. Longkeepers does best in soil that’s friable – by that I mean soil that goes crumbly when you touch it. To start growing, dig a hole about 3cm deep and plant your first seedling. Plant each subsequent seedling 10cm away from its neighbour in rows that are about 20cm apart. If you?re a spinach fan, try popping this in between the rows as it makes a great companion plant. Keep

aphids at bay and your pukekohe longkeepers will be ready to harvest in 20 to 24 weeks (yes, patience is a virtue when it comes to these babies). If it’s pickled onions you’re after, you’ll likely get your hands on some pearl drop seedlings. This pure white cocktail onion has crisp, round and slightly flattened bulbs. It also has thin skin that can be rubbed off straight after harvesting. I always advise people to choose soil that’s rich, and in an

area with full sun. After planting, simply keep the soil moist and this low maintenance variety will grow up to 4cm in diameter, and to a height of 45cm. You’ll know it’s ready to harvest when the tips of its leaves begin to turn brown. If you like to spice up your salads or stir fries, you’ll no doubt choose the red spring onion with its bright red attractive stalks and mild, sweet taste, or the more traditional green spring onion. These can be planted anywhere you have

ready to plant Garlic? The shortest day has just passed, now is this time to plant your garlic! Garlic is a crop that is easy to grow, and has many health benefits as well as adding fantastic flavour to our food. All you need is a pot or container, some top quality growing mix and a sunny spot somewhere around the house. If you are starting from scratch, make sure you get a good growing mix that is free-draining and supplies the right nutrients. For pot and container planting, use our Patio Plus Potting Mix, or Vege Garden Mix. If you have an existing area that you want to plant in, you should have already mixed through some organic compost and sheep pellets to rejuvenate the soil. When choosing which cloves to plant, make sure you choose the larger ones. The small ones will grow, but won’t be as big. Split the garlic heads into individual cloves. There is no need to peel off the white paper that surrounds each clove, it naturally protects the bulbs in the soil, and then disintegrates once the plant starts developing.

When planting out, make a hole about 5cm deep, and 10cm apart. If you are planting is a large area, label the rows so you don’t forget where you have planted. In 4-6 weeks you will see the bright green shoots appear. Once they have popped up, add a layer of mulch around the rows to help keep the soil temperature even, retain the moisture, and keep the weeds down. Make sure you water frequently as to not let the plant dry out. If you’re unsure if your mix is drying out, the best way is to feel the soil with your fingers. If it feels dry – give it a water.

Show off with sassy camellias

www.igro.co.nz

By Rachel Vogan

SASSY WAS a word my grandma used. She was a little sassy herself; a woman who liked to be on parade and never left the house without her lipstick on, even if it was only to go to the clothesline. When sasanqua camellias come into bloom, I often think of my grandma standing at her back door where Camellia sasanqua setsugekka grew. With its pure white blooms in autumn and early winter, it was definitely guilty of stealing the limelight from her neighbours’ later-flowering camellias, which didn’t bloom until spring. Camellias are show-offs and, depending on which variety you grow, flowers can appear in autumn, winter or spring. They are hardy, evergreen shrubs that hail from Asia and China where they have been grown for thousands of years. In the chilly months, few other plant groups can rival these durable campaigners. The camellia family

HARDY: With an open habit setsugekka is ideal for training as an espalier or along trellis. is one of the largest in the flowering world. Its members differ in height, size, shape, growth habit and flower. They are ideal for picking as they last in water for a number of days.

Sasanqua camellias flower in autumn as soon as the soil temperatures start to drop and the nights draw in. The flowers are mainly flat and open with a single or double layer of petals.

Some flowers are fragrant and many have delicate, frilly petals. Flower colour ranges from clean white through to shades of pink and carmine.

CRISP: Setsugekka has frilly, single white flowers with yellow stamens.

Splashing colour INTO THE HOME

Monochromatic colour schemes are currently in vogue while splashes of colour reflect the personality of those living in the home.

C

olour can be incorporated into the home without creating a cluttered look and is easily achieved with bright and cheery accessories, artworks or a choice piece of crockery. A large bright rug or abstract wall hanging that blends yellows through to pale gold or burnt orange will set off the whites, creams and browns of a room. Also in vogue is red in cushions or light shades. These lift a black and white or grey dominance with remarkable effect. Alternatively, blue or green hue teals might be introduced in a painted piece of furniture or runners. Add in a solitary floral chair strategically placed in a bedroom or corner of the lounge that makes a cosy place to curl up with a book or iPad and provides an extra chair when entertaining. Bright greens from pastels through to the almost psychedelic will lift neutral themes. Blend teals and pastel greens in the accessories introduced, or make a bolder effect by combining two bright colours such as bright cerise pinks with yellow-based

pastel greens, or merge deep blues with gold. In a more classical setting, shades of plum, deep reds or even deep violet will add a plush feel, while a watercolour painting incorporating these shades will make the room complete. Simple aesthetic changes can be made with flowers – an easy way to add colour to the room. These might be fresh or fabric; a variety of outlets and home furnishing stores sell the latter. Winter floral arrangements can also be created that bring in earthy

colours when branches such as willows are combined with a mix of green foliage and leucadendrons or proteas. Feature walls have been back in vogue for a while now. They might be the only splash of colour in an otherwise neutral décor as a painted or wallpapered feature. Alternatively, a tapestry of brightly coloured tiles can make a statement or drapes used to add colour. With the amazing range of fabrics, there is a furnishing fabric to suit any taste or

setting and these can also be used for cushions, runners or wall hangings attached to a rod or covering a large piece of plywood or canvas. Even small spaces can be given a lift with a little colour, while larger spaces gain more intimacy and a friendly feel so shop around to see what is available. Consider the possibilities, letting the imagination run wild then using your talents choose the colours and theme and have fun introducing vibrancy into your home.

Giving the furniture

a facelift

Rather than replacing a tired lounge suite or favourite chair, why not have it re-upholstered. It is a more affordable option and worth doing when the furniture is well-made.

“S

ome cheaper lounge suites on the market are poor quality,” says Paul Tainui from Somerfield Upholstery. “When you have good bones in your settee or chairs, then all that’s needed is putting new fabric on them.” Somerfield Upholstery has over 900 quality fabric designs to choose from, giving more selection and variety than ready-made furniture which might only have six options. With so many fabrics to choose from, customers have no trouble finding a fabric that will match existing décor or create an

original eye-catching look. Paul has considerable experience in the upholstery trade spanning 30 years. It started on work experience from school and led to a job in the industry. Eleven years ago, he opened his own business. “I had done everything that I wanted to do in the trade, so thought it might be nice to run my own business recovering people’s furniture,” says Paul. “It’s really good. You meet lots of customers and it’s great to see the results when you put a good fabric on their furniture. The old becomes new and looks very smart,” says Paul.

With so much expertise, Paul can advise customers on the best option for their furniture, giving them ideas as to what can be done. The team at Somerfield Upholstery not only recover settees and armchairs. They also repair, repolish and recover old timber dining tables and chairs, making them look brand-new again. They can also alter and modernise a suite for inside the home or exterior use. Even the old chair that belonged to mum, dad or the grandparents can be restored and upholstered, bringing it back to life with a bright, modern look that ensures that special family heirloom fits well in any home. To talk to Paul about your furniture renovation needs, he can be contacted on 03 3490 456. Paul can also come out and give advice and quote on furniture restoration and upholstering. Somerfield Upholstery is located at 10 Calgary Place, Hornby.

CRAFTING YOUR

Spring will be here soon enough and suddenly we will be needing shade from the hot sun. Planning now for summer will ensure protection from harsh UV rays that harm the skin and can make sitting outside uncomfortable.

eciding on the best shade solution can be a challenge so it is worth seeking the advice of a professional on the options available and what will suit a given location. Mark Levey from Shadecraft has considerable experience in assisting people

in the Selwyn area with their sun and shelter solutions. Mark says there are three main forms of sun protection: sun shade sails, canopies and umbrellas. It will depend on the location as to which is most suitable. By visiting customers in their homes or places of business, Mark is able to assess their needs, explain the options available and recommend what is most suitable for the location based on the client’s tastes. He then personally designs a shade solution tailored to the client’s needs, setting and size of the outdoor space, taking account of prevailing winds. As much of the Selwyn area is affected by north westerly winds, Mark advises that shade sails are often the best choice. “Sails are the most cost-effective for sun protection, but all the structures are windproof,” he says. Sails are easily removed when the weather cools down with the use of a few basic tools or if desired, Shadecraft will come and take these down for a small charge. The second best option for wind resistance is Eclipse and Ferrari arched canopy systems. Shade can also be provided with cantilevered structures that are suitable as carports or cover over outdoor areas such as patios, barbecues, pool areas,

All sails and umbrellas supplied by Shadecraft are made from high quality UV-resistant shade cloth that has a 10-year warranty. Mark reminds that customers need to have their orders in by August. “This will ensure that cover is in place for all of summer,” he says. As landscaping is often the last stage in a home project, the planning and execution of the exterior is often left until nearer the end, yet there are good reasons for considering it early on.

I

f the services of professionals will be required for all or part of the landscaping scheme, then consulting the experts in the initial stages of house design allows them to give ideas and book the job to avoid delays when the work is due for completion.

Aaron and Vicky Bartlett from The Outdoor Space emphasise the importance of booking early as it allows them to fit in with customer requirements when needed. “We currently have work scheduled up to October,” advises Vicky who says that they hate to disappoint customers. “If customers contact us early on, then we can be sure of starting at a time that is convenient to them.” The Outdoor Space specialise in hard landscaping. Whether it is building brick or block walls, stonework, decks, paving, fences, pergolas, water features or outdoor fires, they have the expertise, manpower and equipment to complete the job. They are also adept in preparing and sowing lawns, laying down irrigation systems, planting and laying synthetic turf. In fact, there is little they cannot do. Aaron particularly enjoys creating innovative designs that fit within a client’s budget, and he is happy to visit clients to give them ideas on ways to make the most of their outdoor living area. He will also provide a free quote and can draw up plans for the work to be done. For examples of landscaping completed by the team at The Outdoor Space, visit their website www.theoutdoorspace.co.nz. Suzuki Celerio replaces Alto I’VE OFTEN wondered why manufacturers withdraw a successful nameplate. In a bold marketing exercise, Suzuki New Zealand have withdrawn both Alto and Splash from their model line-ups, replaced with a newcomer labelled Celerio. Engineering-wise the Celerio is more of a replacement for Alto than Splash simply because both have been built around a threecylinder engine, the Splash was a four-potter. That aside, the newcomer embodies all of the ingredients which made Alto a popular seller here in New Zealand, well to be fair, in all the markets where it was released. I’ve long been a big Alto fan, The Star has had several as pool cars over the years. They all gave faithful service and even though they weren’t dynamic, that could be excused in favour of their economy and reliability. I’m guessing Suzuki will be expecting the same sort of praise for the Celerio, it lands here in just one specification at $15,990 (automatic $17,500), and although it is bigger than Alto it has better fuel usage claims – up to 8.3 per cent – which is remarkable given that it is much the same engine. According to Suzuki New Zealand, the Celerio is capable of a 4.7-litre per 100km (60mpg) combined cycle average for the manu-

Features of note include standard fitment of air conditioning, electric windows front and rear, electric exterior mirror adjustment, double-deadlock central locking system, high quality audio and Bluetooth hands-free communication link. For safety the Celerio gets a traction and stability control system plus six air bags. The Celerio is a worthy successor to Alto. In spite of its compact proportions it has an internal structure which looks after its occupants, comfort has leapt up a level and design-wise it appeals with its bold front end styling and easy access rear hatchback. Incidentally, up to 254-litres of luggage space lies in that area extending to 726-litres with the rear seats folded. The Celerio is honest and represents value, the engine is delightful and it will reward with its fuel efficiency.

NOW OPEN! Lincoln Montessori, Lincoln’s newest childcare facility is now open. The fresh, new, purpose-built centre in the Barton Fields subdivision offers children a beautiful, peaceful environment with amazing spaces to learn and play. Inside the centre, the learning materials are arranged invitingly on low, open shelves so that the children can freely choose any materials that they would like to play with. The materials themselves invite activity; there are bright arrays of solid geometric forms, knobbed puzzle maps, coloured beads and various specialised rods and blocks. The two outside spaces, filled with obstacles, wooden huts, slides, gardens and sandpits, have been designed to encourage children to challenge themselves and gain confidence as they reach new goals. The Montessori trained educators at Lincoln Montessori believe the best way for a child to thrive is to empower them by creating an environment filled with exciting possibilities where they can learn language, maths, sensory awareness, creative arts, science and movement through all five senses. The use of child-sized everyday items throughout the centre means children learn practical life skills - to help them gain control in the coordination of his or her movements and allow them to gain independence and adapt to their society. At Lincoln Montessori the educators will deliver a comprehensive Montessori education, cultivating independent thought and foundational skills as well as awareness of the environment, empathy for others, social ease, good manners and confidence. While a Montessori education in itself does a wonderful job of preparing children for primary school, Lincoln Montessori also offers an optional extension programme to aid in the child’s transition to mainstream primary school. This programme is offered to all children 4 years and over and aims to make the child’s next step into a school environment less stressful and geared for success. To make life easier for parents and caregivers all meals are included in the fees. With a wide variety of ever changing meals, Lincoln Montessori provides healthy dishes made from quality seasonal ingredients to ensure that the child’s nutritional requirements are fully met. The centre offers 20 hours ECE for children over three and will be open from 7.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. If you would like to enrol your child now or find out more about this exciting new centre in the new Barton Fields subdivision in Lincoln please visit www.lincolnmontessori.co.nz or phone 03 325 3350.

SHOW HOMES

Show Homes - the ultimate way In Christchurch and the surrounding rural districts, we are blessed with an extensive array of very good quality show homes.

There are many things to think about when you're considering building a new home. Building companies build show homes to

demonstrate their workmanship, display innovative design ideas and present a snapshot into a new and luxurious lifestyle, featuring all the latest in materials, fittings and fixtures.

A show home can inspire you in a way nothing else can. You can absorb the ambiance they present and admire the innovative techniques, new materials and technology.

The standard requirement in a new home seems to be four bedrooms with two each of bathrooms and living areas, and a good example of this is Trident Homes’ new show home at Te Whāriki subdivision in Lincoln.

T

rident’s emphasis with this 242-square-metre house was to achieve a well laid out family home that efficiently utilised space. “This is a great home with nice features. It is priced very well for its fit-out, making it an affordable family home,” says Jason McKenzie, owner of Trident Homes. “We built this show home to our standard specifications so people could see how they can get value for money. Clients can choose to add more features and fittings to suit their budget if they wish.” Trident has added some additional features such as the four-kilowatt solar power system though McKenzie says it is a design that is economic to build yet still has all the features wanted in a modern home.

The kitchen has clean lines and wellappointed appliances merging seamlessly with the family’s dining and living spaces. Its island is generous and there is a pantry neatly tucked to one side while a study nook sits around the corner. At one end of the living area, double doors open into a lounge. From this room, sliders access a covered outdoor entertaining area, which is also reached from the dining space, giving the house great indoor-outdoor flow. In all there can be three defined outdoor spaces, allowing shade and shelter no matter what the time of day. The main bedroom has both ensuite and walk-in robe while the three other bedrooms are separated by a hallway that allows a level

of privacy. All have good sized wardrobes. Separate laundry and toilet amenities are another bonus of this design. The main bathroom is spacious while the tiled ensuite was cleverly designed to create more room. There is a genuine double garage which is sufficiently far enough from the bedrooms so as not to disturb when used late at night. This home has a good finish and street appeal while the steps in the plan add interest and opportunity for interesting landscaping. Trident Homes also build higher specified houses. Their experienced design and sales consultants have the ability to draw up free concept plans for clients with 3D modelling capability. “This is an invaluable service for our clients as they have direct involvement in the design of their new home,” says McKenzie. They concentrate on building in the Selwyn area and Jason is a qualified builder with considerable experience in the industry. He oversees all their projects, employing

his own carpenters so Trident’s clients have direct contact with their builder. Trident’s show home at Te Whāriki is located at 39 Vernon Drive and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12pm until 4pm or by appointment.
