Land yacht plan on track for east BY GABRIELLE STUART A track for land yachts could be opened by Christmas in the Bexley Reserve, if plans are approved this week. The business has been started by Ian Brown who has lived in Southshore and Sumner for 30 years. He owns a Muffin Break franchise.

Mr Brown said he hoped the new venture would “bring a bit of fun” to the area. “I’ve been thinking for a while I would like to do something a little bit different. We saw all that land out in Bexley just waiting for something to be done there, and we thought it would be something really positive for the area,” he said. “There’s no shortage of wind out

in Bexley, and I think it’ll be a good, positive step toward revitalisation in the area.” He put the idea to the city council in November 2011, and said the planning process had been a long one. But he said both the city council and Environment Canterbury have been consulted throughout the

planning process, and he hoped the paperwork could be approved next month. Once approved, the track is expected to take about a month to build. He plans to build a track for BloKarts, New Zealand designed wind-powered land yachts, and another track for electric drift karts. • Turn to page 2

Lake Terrace Kindergarten located in Burwood is a privately-owned centre in eastern Christchurch catering to a child’s inquisitive mind. This beautiful kindergarten was established in 2007 and designed to cater to the wonderment of children.

Children learn about social responsibility through their play, in a natural and holistic way. Children are encouraged to participate in self-help experiences to learn about and understand how to manage their own care and nutrition requirements, before entering the primary school setting. The kindergarten offers places to children aged between 3.5and 6years of age. They offer 20hour ECE spaces, with no charge up to three days a week. (Conditions apply) Strong links between the local schools and the Lake Terrace Kindergarten allow for a seamless and smooth transition into the primary school setting when your child makes that transition.

A Pirate Market Day will be held this weekend at the New Brighton Mall. The market day will feature special entertainment, children’s activities and spot prizes for costumes, as well as the regular market stalls. The market will run from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, September 20. More information is available from the New Brighton Project.

Quake repair grant

A grant of $100,000 has been made towards the earthquake repairs of the St John New Brighton hall in Rawhiti Domain. The grant was made through the city council Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund last week, and will be put toward a new roof, windows and the internal fit out of the building.

The application will then go to the city council for final approval. Mr Brown said he hoped to provide cheaper sessions for schools in the area, and believed the karts would appeal to families. “Our kids are 21 and 19, but they’ve sailed Blokarts since they were knee high. I have a relative who is in his 80s and also loves the Blokarts, so we know this will really appeal to anyone.”

Preschool, Nursery and Kindergarten We work on a high teacher to child ratio with 80% plus of our teachers qualified.

Lake Terrace offers an embedded transition programme including opportunities of literacy and numeracy practice every day, to help prepare children for entering school. The Lake Terrace Kindergarten philosophy is underpinned by the knowledge that children learn naturally through play, and that the relationships built in the early learning years support this learning in the best possible way. As a team their teachers value and respect each other, children and their families and therefore, provide a truly respectful learning environment for the children in their setting. They value the relationships their kindergarten aged children have with others in the community, and provide many opportunities for those relationships to foster and grow. An update on the New Brighton Sustainable Coastal Village project will be given to the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board tonight. The aim is to create an environementally-friendly “eco-village”, with shared living spaces to encourage a sense of community. The project is still in the concept stages. More information on the project can be found at www.nbscv.org.

We offer 1 to 3 days no charge (conditions apply) using 20 hours ECE for 3 year olds, and offer the option of 1/2 days in our nursery. We pride ourselves on our strong professional relationships with whanau and tamariki; this was highly commended in our last Education Review Office visit.

Call for more councillors BY GABRIELLE STUART

Bubbling cake for Bill SURPRISE: If you’d like to know how to make the deputy prime minister giggle – try vinegar and baking soda mixed in a cake. Bill English attended a Wainoni Avonside Community Services Trust event to mark the four-year anniversary of the September 2010 earthquake, and received several surprises during his visit, including a bubbling “liquefaction cake”. He also acknowledged the frustration of the residents of the area during the visit, including the eight members who are still struggling with insurance issues.

Age Concern volunteers presented with After years of service in their communities, 19 “older but exceptional” Age Concern Canterbury volunteers have been recognised for their work. They were presented with awards for their service at the Papanui RSA last Friday. This is what was said about the work of some of the local volunteers. Coleen Dunlop – Parklands Coleen has volunteered for Wainoni/Avonside Community Services Trust for three days, three and a half hours a day for the last 12 and a half years. She is the “refreshments manager” and takes charge of all the morning and afternoon teas as well as special luncheon occasions. At times there can be up to 100 people in attendance. Coleen remembers how all the regular people have their cuppas and always chats with them regarding current issues. She is genuinely interested and caring about people. Age Concern Canterbury often host educational seminars at Wainoni and Coleen will also come in and assist with catering/kitchen cleaning. The kitchen is always left in ultra-clean condition. Coleen is always the first to assist with running or organising events. Coleen is also the Vege Co-op co-ordinator and every Tuesday morning she is at St Faith’s New Brighton packing for the Vege Co-op and then transports the vege/fruit packs to Wainoni, often dropping veges off to people en route. service awards Recovery plan ideas flood in BY TOM DOUDNEY

PRESENTATION: Coleen Dunlop of Parklands (centre), was accompanied by Betty Chapman and Murray Dunlop at the award ceremony. In the liaison role Pam works as a bridge between us and the individual who is often quite lonely and vulnerable. She does a great job phoning and speaking with them at length, and ensures that they have ongoing support. It’s not always easy work and we thank Pam for her patience and kind manner. Elsie Hartley Elsie has been a volunteer visitor for Age Concern Canterbury’s Accredited Visiting Service since 2001 and has made more than 400 visits. She has become good friends with her clients and they have seen her as an extended family member. Elsie’s quiet personality and empathy has been at work throughout her 13 years of AVS service for Age Concern Canterbury. Her commitment and attendance at the

Age Concern monthly meetings is outstanding and Elsie has gone the extra mile to attend courses and meetings, to share the information that she learns with her clients. She is a true champion. Jan Ogilvie Jan has been a reception volunteer at Age Concern Canterbury for 19 years. We thoroughly enjoy her company and the many tales she has to tell. Jan volunteers on a Tuesday morning and a Wednesday afternoon on reception and puts her hand up for more to help us out. She is always helpful and friendly to those at the desk or on the end of the phone and with her broad historical knowledge of our services, knows exactly where to refer the caller for help. Thank you Jan for your length of service and for being so generous to others.

A cycle and walkways network and a city to sea river park are among the most popular proposals to aid earthquake recovery in the eastern suburbs. That’s according to feedback on the community engagement website EVO::SPACE. The website was set up by a group of community leaders calling themselves Eastern Visions whose stated aim is to create meaningful public participation in decision making and facilitate an agreed big-picture recovery plan for the area. Group convener and former city councillor Peter Beck told a city council earthquake recovery committee of the whole meeting last week that there was no budget for any of the proposals as they were so far just ideas in a preliminary stage. “This is about a community driven project which will then justify

the investment in feasibility studies and business case accordingly.” Avon-Otakaro Network cochairman Evan Smith, also spoke on behalf of the group. He said the group didn’t necessarily endorse all the proposals and some were mutually exclusive. Of the more than 40 proposals which had been loaded on to the website, 10 were in the greater New Brighton area and 22 were on red zoned residential land. The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority owned the land for 21 sites, while the city council owned 13 sites, the Ministry of Education owned four and the rest were private. “A number of the proposals here are in sport and recreation and we think there is the potential here to turn the whole of the east into the aquatic playground of the city,” Mr Smith said. Mr Beck said the project had

been running for eight weeks and there had been more than 1250 registrations made on the website. People would be able to contribute until September 30 when the results would be analysed. Mr Beck asked the city council to actively promote, support and value the project. “We’re not just talking about a vision for the next five or 10 years, Eastern Vision is looking to the next 50 to 100 years as to what that might be like,” Mr Beck said. By taking heed of the project, the city council would be validating and listening to the community. “There has been too much of the other stuff over the last four years where the community has felt disenfranchised,” he said. He called for the city council to be flexible in its decision making, citing a need to consider potential land use proposals when replacing infrastructure.

Bird life returns home BY GABRIELLE STUART

Four years on from the September earthquake, there are new residents moving into the red zone. Native pukeko, bellbird and kereru are just some of the birds making their homes in red zone areas, while there have been recent sightings of rare kookaburra, ibis and bittern in the area. There are no complaints from the new residents about the state of roads, housing or insurance, but local bird experts are concerned they may face bigger problems. Graham Evans of the Christchurch Bird Club said predators, like feral cats, rats and possums, were also moving into the area. “One of our concerns is that feral cats and rats could be a threat to the birds as they move in, and their numbers could increase just as quickly. Measures need to be looked at to keep those predators away from birds that are moving in, especially when they are vulnerable.” He said that birds were particularly vulnerable when they were nesting in spring, or moulting in late summer. “The concern is that if something isn’t done there could be a lot of natives killed by these predators.” Niall Mugan, founder of the

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority recently released a report which recommended grassing the red zone and grazing sheep on it, as the cheapest way to maintain it. But growing grass on the cleared red zone land has been costed at about $7.5 million, and concerns have been raised about dog attacks and rustling if sheep were grazed in the city. More information on the bird sanctuary project can be found at www.avonotakaronetwork. co.nz, or www.evospace.co.nz. Bird sightings in the area can be reported at www.birdsofchristchurch.co.nz.

Aranui High School travelled to Auckland last week, to play in the national secondary schools rugby league development tournament, where they finished third. After topping their group with ease, beating Whangarei Boys’ High School 24-18, Greymouth High School 34-12, and Pakuranga College 42-22, they drew Wesley College in the semi-finals. Even though Aranui were the smaller side, they took the game to their opposition, and were ahead with five minutes remaining, before Wesley scored a late winner, with the score finishing 22-24 in their favour. Aranui then beat Northcote College in the third and fourth playoff, 32-12. Cyrus Timo-Latu, who plays for the Canterbury Bulls, was given the development grade’s best and fairest award, and was also selected in the New Zealand secondary schools team to play a New South Wales team later this month. Aranui also won the best cultural salute for their haka, and coach Te Wairau was named coach of the tournament. • More sport, page 10

▌FLAME ▌ FILES

Plenty of gas this week BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

A week for gas. LPG to be more precise. There were two separate incidents that involved plenty of work for firefighters and other agencies. The first, on Monday was just a short stroll from the Sockburn Fire Station at the Wigram Control Tower where a digger managed to fracture a gas supply line. The incident took well over an hour and involved the evacuation of a lot of people in the area. This is a precautionary measure. Any ignition source and the right mix can be catastrophic, as in Mangere in Auckland on Wednesday when some young folks huffing propane were smoking while doing so. They were critically injured at the time of writing. The second incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Basil Pl, Mt Pleasant when a gas delivery truck left the road and crashed down the hill. Three fire appliances, and a command unit responded to work with the gas company to ensure no major escape of gas. More arson in Peterborough St and River Rd earlier this week. These incidents die down and then rise up regularly. They are a danger to anyone who may be dossing in the empty house targeted, they are a danger to the firefighters attendNEW LOCATION ADVERT.pdf 1 ing and they are even a danger to the arsonists themselves.

Aranui beat all odds Aranui High School’s senior A netball team competed in the South Island secondary school netball championship for the first time since 2009 last week, and were champions in the C grade. Tired after the long trip down to Invercargill, and a bit nervous to boot, they lost their first OUTLET: Aranui centre game, against Lawrence Area Cheyenne Thompson School, by five prepares to throw an overhead pass during points. This spurred a game earlier in the season. them into action, as they went on to win the rest of their pool games convincingly, earning a semi-final against John Paul II High School, which they won 37-28. The final was a rematch with Lawrence Area School, and this time Aranui came out on top, 37-29.

for you without financial influence. Carolyn Gordon has a special interest in tinnitus (noises in the ears/head) and is trained in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. Those who experience bothersome tinnitus can be helped by this effective technique. Management of tinnitus takes time and involves sound therapy, counselling and sometimes amplification over a period of time. Both Carolyns strongly believe in the importance of hearing and say any loss of hearing should not be ignored. As hearing loss usually occurs slowly, people are often unaware of the problem. Family members often notice first. Untreated hearing loss is also linked to a higher incidence of health problems such as dementia, brain volume loss and also higher hospitalisation rates than for those with normal hearing later in life. Loss of hearing can affect the ability of working people to do their jobs and in some occupations, jeopardise safety. Due to the recent increase in ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) funding, people with a work noise history, who are eligible for ACC, can get an increased contribution towards hearing aids - some models may even be free. So, if you have a history of work noise exposure or are an existing ACC client, call Gordon & Till Audiology to arrange an appointment to have a free initial consultation.

Mushrooms in mustard sauce

Serves 4 This unusual salad or hors-d’oeuvre is easy to make and brings out the best in a mushroom. The longer you marinate them, the softer and juicier they become. Ingredients 3 Tbsp Dijon mustard 1 clove Garlic, mashed with ½ tsp salt 1 Tbsp White wine vinegar 1 Lemon, freshly juiced 3 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil 2 Tbsp Walnut oil 500g Mushrooms, we used brown, white button, and portobello 1 Lemon, freshly zested 1 handful Chervil, or parsley leaves Directions For the sauce, to a screw top jar add dijon mustard, garlic, white wine vinegar, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, walnut oil and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Shake like mad to emulsify into a dressing. To marinate, brush off any loose dirt from the mushrooms using your fingers, that’s what they’re for after all! Using a sharp knife, finely slice into a large mixing bowl. Pour the sauce over the mushrooms, toss well and leave to marinate for 1-3 hours. To serve, toss through lemon zest and chervil (or parsley) leaves. Taste and season accordingly.

Moroccan fish Ingredients 1 Lemon, rind only, cut into thin strips 2 cloves Crushed garlic 1 tsp Sumac powder 2 tsp Ground cumin ½ tsp Crushed chilli, paste 800g Canned tomatoes, 2 x cans, chopped Moroccan style 4 pieces White-fleshed fish fillets, skinned and boned 1 to serve Fresh coriander

A simple kumara rosti Ingredients 1 Kumara 1 tsp Salt 1 tsp Coconut oil Directions Peel and grate the kumara and mix through the salt. Cover and leave to sit for 15-20 minutes. When ready to cook, take handfuls of the mixture and squeeze out as much liquid as you can (the more the better to prevent soggy rosti). Place the squeezed kumara in another bowl and mix through a little pepper. Heat some coconut oil in a frying pan to a medium heat. Form the kumara into flat rounds and fry until golden on both sides. You want your rosti cooked through, so ensure your pan is not too hot. Season with salt to taste and top with a fried steak, fillet of fish or egg.

1 to serve Lemon, wedges 2 Onions, peeled and finely chopped Directions Heat oil in a large frying pan and add onion, garlic, lemon rind, sumac, cumin, crushed chilli paste and tomatoes. Cook, stirring often, for 2 minutes. Cut fish into 6cm pieces. Add to tomato mixture and cook over a medium heat until fish is cooked through. Serve with couscous and garnish with coriander and lemon wedges.

Barnardos children get new equipment Playtime for children in the east just got better, after a $20,000 grant from Youthtown for new play equipment. Children at Barnardos early learning centres in Richmond and Mairehau received new bikes, crash pads, slides, balance beams, tunnels, and climbing frames. Richmond centre head teacher Victoria Kees said the children were enjoying the new equipment. “The tamariki just love zooming around on their new bikes and challenging themselves on the climbing frames. Having an exciting outdoor environment makes a huge

difference to children’s learning, especially in terms of developing motor skills and learning about their bodies and the physical environment.” The grant was made through the Youthtown Gaming Trust, which aims to support youth development, and split between three centres. Service manager Sue Gleeson said the grant was exceptional. “I would like to thank Youthtown for their enormous generosity with this donation, it is truly an exceptional gift that the children from all three centres will gain so much enjoyment from.”

L

indisfarne was established in 1987 and is a small privately run nursery school. The separate nursery building caters for up to 14 babies, and the preschool is licenced for up to 36 children. We pride ourselves on providing as much a home-like environment as possible for all of the children who attend Lindisfarne. Our team consists of all trained and registered teachers, a teacher’s aide, a teaching assistant and a cook and cleaner. We pride ourselves on being a multicultural centre, both through the nationalities of the children who attend and the nationalities of our teaching staff. The large private play area allows the children to engage in lots of physical activities

as well as imaginative play. Our on-site primary school teacher ensures all children are well-prepared to start primary school. Families are more than welcome to call in at any time to view the programme and meet the teachers.

If you are rebuilding or repairing your home, Enviro Master can offer you a complete solution to meet your individual heating, cooling and ventilation needs.

M

any housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best to talk to the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation. Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9 kilowatts of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma), benefits no other heating appliance can offer. Ducted and multi systems are becoming increasingly popular, providing climatecontrolled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems. Enviro Master Ltd is your air conditioning and heat pump specialist and has been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years now. Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands, including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs in either your workplace or home. We are also able to repair any brand of heat pump. Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as

effectively and efficiently as possible, resulting in a healthy and hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump cleaned. We, at Enviro Master, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period. For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch.

asport offers a wide range of compliant clean air fires. The CCMC has been operating for 73 years, during which time it has continued to foster and promote music in Canterbury. This year CCMC is celebrating our region's musical diversity, and is providing our youth with an opportunity to participate in a unified concert in order to help strengthen their lifetime interest in music. The concerts will offer a lively atmosphere for all families and members of the public to enjoy. In order to encourage participation in music, both events are free, although a gold coin donation would be appreciated.
