Bid to identify WWI soldier BY TOM DOUDNEY

ALMOST A century after a young soldier is thought to have left Canterbury to fight in World War 1, another ex-military man is trying to uncover his story.

For Rolleston resident Craig Rutherford, a chance find at a Doyleston garage sale has set him on a hunt to identify a mystery man in a framed photograph (pictured right). Mr Rutherford, who retired from the army last year after

23 years of service, bought the photograph of the young soldier in what appears to be a WW1 uniform. Since then, his inquiries have led him to believe the man was from Selwyn. • Turn to p2

A member of military reenactment and living history group the Garrison Society, Mr Rutherford’s instincts and some advice from another society member have lead him to this conclusion. The badges from the soldier’s uniform looked as though they were from the 29th Reinforcements, who left New Zealand in 1917 to serve on the western front. “I did a bit of research online myself and those from the 29th Reinforcements were predominately from South Canterbury,” Mr Rutherford said. “So once again that points to it being someone from the Selwyn district.” He thought it was possible the photo may have been left behind in the Doyleston house where the garage sale was held by someone with connections to the soldier, as the house appeared to be quite old. Now a panel beater, Mr Rutherford served on two deployments to East Timor and one to Iraq before his retirement. Military history is more than just a passing interest to him. His collection of memorabilia includes the autographs of famous solider such as Sir Charlies Upham, Sergeant Jack Hinton and Corporal Willie Apiata, as well as a WWII Willys jeep that he takes to air

During WWII, Mr Rutherford’s grandfather served with the Australian army and his wife’s two grandfathers were in the New Zealand Air Force. His uncle fought in Vietnam with the 171 Battery Royal Artillery and his wife’s great great grandfather, from Malvern, fought in WWI and was made an honorary lifetime member of the Darfield RSA. Mr Rutherford hadn’t decided what he would do with the photograph in the long term. “If I find the family he is related to, I could possibly look at giving it back to them. I haven’t thought about that yet.”

Intersection safety intiative for district BY TOM DOUDNEY A proposed new road safety initiative which aims to improve intersection safety by using radar controlled solar LEDs fixed to road signs may be trialled in Selwyn. The devices, attached to signs 200m from the intersection, would be activated by a radar detecting approaching vehicles which in turn would produce a brightly-lit signal warning drivers of the intersection ahead. The idea is the brainchild of Selwyn police sergeant Dan Harker (above), and Pat Martin, chief executive of Solar Bright which designs and manufactures solar road safety technology internationally. The pair have set up a new company, Solar Safety New Zealand, to produce the devices. Mr Harker said his work on the

▌IN ▌ BRIEF St John base A proposal to lease a site on the corner of Norman Kirk Drive and Kidman St in Rolleston to the St John ambulance service for a new operations base is up for

initiative was something he was pursuing privately, outside of his job as a police officer. The trial still has to be approved by the district council and the New Zealand Transport Agency but Mr Harker said he was hoping the launch would take place before Christmas. “With the amount of fatalities and serious car crashes I have attended, I thought there has got to be a better way,” Mr Harker said. Mr Harker presented the idea to district councillors at a recent meeting, where he also brought along a model of one of the LED devices. Councillors showed an interest in trialling the model but indicated a need for more information, particularly around costings and comparable road safety initiatives such as rumble strips. Mr Harker would not comment on the cost at this stage, except to say that they were focused on making the devices “cost effective” so as to get a greater uptake.

He believed the devices would be much more effective than rumble strips. “When you see it working, you just can’t miss it and rumble strips have got a big maintenance component.” Mr Harker said plans were advanced, using telemetry, to send signals to signs on the intersecting roads alerting drivers that someone was approaching the stop sign. The decision making process around the safety of that intersection was therefore shared between two motorists. The technology would also have other applications, such as for rail crossings and industrial work sites. NZTA traffic and safety manager Tony Spowart said the possible trial would be discussed at a meeting in October. District council asset manager Murray Washington Council said the district council had requested further information about the technology.

approval by district councillors at tomorrow’s meeting. St John would also buy a building on the site for $500,000. The initial proposal had been for the Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade to also relocate to the site,

however, the Fire Service has since indicated its intention to purchase land elsewhere. Site development for that land is thought to be at least five years away, whereas St John’s need for a new site is considered more pressing.

That is not just for Spiderban but for all Pest Companies, full information can be seen on the PDF file “house preparation” on our web site spiderban.com.

WHITE TAIL SPIDERS: These spiders seem to be on the increase in Christchurch and a lot more of our calls are regarding them. Whilst they are not venomous the bacteria they carry can be devastating to people in poor health, especially liver, kidney, heart patients and diabetics. We don’t know why but their bites can have different effects on different people. The young and the elderly can be particularly susceptible. People with concerns should have their house treated inside and outside yearly.

Ants are becoming more of a problem in Christchurch each year. Darwin Ants seem to be by far the most prominent but Argentine Ants and White Footed Ants are becoming more common. Darwin Ants can be identified by squashing some of them on your finger, and smelling it quickly, they have a pungent sweet smell. Their colonies can grow huge and can spread very quickly. These insects have survived millennia and are a force to be reckoned with. If you have ants in your home take actions sooner rather than later as the problems can escalate very quickly. With ants cleanliness is godliness, keep benches

Spider proofing helps to protect your paintwork and keeps your home looking clean and tidy. Spider webs over a period of time damage and mark paint permanently. clean from food waste, rinse dirty dishes immediately, don’t leave scrap bins inside, get them out into a trolley bin. Keep the rubber seal around your dishwasher clean. Keep the shelves and your pantry clean, and keep pet bowls outside or wash after use. Keep your floor clean where animals are being fed. If you have a garbage disposal keep the trap outside clean as well. It is better to treat the ants outside rather than inside. Fly spray and any pest control products that can be bought from a supermarket or shops may kill a few but are largely ineffective, you need professional help with licensed products. For every ant you see on the surface there are approximately 2,500 in the colony. The colony can be a 200mm underground and cover a huge area. Incorrect treatment can make the colony divide into up to 4 new colonies and move a meter away from the original colony. And in some areas there are colonies every couple of metres. Early control is very important but unfortunately you must realise they are now here to stay and are going to come back eventually.

Residents to witness Tai Tapu bush opening A Tai Tapu bush restoration area where volunteers have planted more than 5000 native seedlings since 2012 and a new footbridge will soon have its official opening. The land, at Rhodes Park, has similar characteristics to Riccarton Bush, one of the most significant native forest remnants in Canterbury. Native seedlings from Riccarton Bush and other local native bush areas were used for the planting. A wide range of organisations and volunteers from Tai Tapu and Canterbury have been involved in the project, helping to fund, plant and maintain the bush area. The Rhodes Park Reserve Board Committee and Stephen Brailsford have overseen the project. Mr Brailsford has provided ecological advice on the planting. A boardwalk runs through the planted areas and has been funded by the district council and the committee. Tai Tapu School Enviroschools students now use the site as an outdoor classroom, and have helped replace dead plants and survey bird life. The new bridge is designed for pedestrians and cyclists and connects the bush restoration area to Old Tai Tapu Rd. It replaces a narrow older bridge which needed significant maintenance work. Brace for windstorms Authorities are advising residents to prepare in case of strong springtime winds. District council emergency management officer Ryan O’Rourke said strong winds could occur at any time of the year but were especially common in spring. “Selwyn residents need to be prepared to cope with these,” Mr O’Rourke said. Last September, Selwyn experienced its worst windstorm in nearly four decades, with winds gusting over 150km/h in parts of the district. The winds caused power outages to 28,000 homes in Selwyn and Christchurch. The outages lasted more than a week in some areas of Selwyn, and the wind caused extensive damage to trees and property. Mr O’Rourke said that a first step to be prepared was for people to ensure they checked weather forecasts regularly so that they knew if strong wind was forecast and could take steps to prepare their family. “I would also encourage people to join the Selwyn Gets Ready website as it helps communities take care of each other in an emergency,” he said. The website is a database which provides local community response teams with in-

Orion energy projects manager Stephen Godfrey said it was important for property owners to keep their trees trimmed and well away from power lines especially given the likelihood of strong winds at this time of year. “A power outage caused by a tree could affect many people, including those with health issues,” he said. For advice on who can safely cut down or trim trees, phone Orion on 0800 363 9898. To join Selwyn Gets Ready, visit the website at www. selwyn.getsready.net

FACT BOX Preparing for strong winds If strong winds are forecast there are a number of sensible steps you can take to help protect your home and prepare your family: • Bring outdoor furniture, rubbish bins or cans and anything else that can be picked up by the wind into a garage, shed or indoors. • When the wind becomes strong stay indoors, and close window and doors. • Power outages are common during and after high winds and you may not be able to drive immediately after the storm so check that you are ready for this. • Check that you have bottled water, non-perishable food, a can opener, a first aid kit, a torch and any essential medical supplies your family will need at hand. You may also wish to fill bathtubs and sinks with water for flushing the toilet.

• Have a supply of torches and extra batteries handy. Do not use candles (as they are a fire risk) or kerosene lamps, which require ventilation and are not designed for indoor use. Check the district council website for information and advice: www. selwyn.govt.nz • If the power goes out listen to Radio NZ for weather information and updates. • Stay off the roads when a windstorm is forecast – driving is dangerous due to fallen trees, power lines and other hazards. • Driving at night after a major windstorm is unsafe and should be avoided. • Do not touch any downed power lines as they may be alive. Report these to Orion on 0800 363 9898. • The district council can be reached on 347 2800 or 318 8338 if assistance is required. • Any power outages should be reported to Orion on 0800 363 9898.

Winning art on show The printmaking work of last year’s Darfield Artweek winner Libby Baxter is on display alongside the glass work of runner up Lorraine Natusch at Darfield’s Selwyn Gallery this month. Ms Baxter, an emerging artist based in Ashburton, studied a Bachelor of Design Degree at Massey University where she discovered her passion in printmaking. In her converted old woolshed she designs and makes her prints using a collage of techniques. Her fascination with layering, transfers, etching and embossing has constantly lead her to new results. She has also worked on commission artworks using personal photographs creating memorabilia. It is from the surrounding landscape that Libby draws inspiration. Her love for photography and travel has provided her with endless material to use and inspire her work. Ms Natusch transforms her ideas into exquisite pieces of glass art, using the techniques of casting, fusing, slumping and pate de verre. Her foray into art began with design courses, studying many different mediums until the discovery of cast glass became her passion. Initial courses led to an advanced professional course and a hobby started to became a career. Since returning to her home town of Darfield, she has attended courses to study under several world acclaimed master glass artists. In this exhibition Lorraine has

She has instead chosen to show ideas that have been on hold, using the technique of pate de verre (paste of glass) and further develop her fused platters. bursting with fresh ideas and talent and was “surely a taste of what is to come at this October’s Darfield Artweek” The exhibition is open now and will run until October 2. The gallery will be open daily except Mondays from 10am to 4pm. An exhibition programme is available on the gallery’s website www.selwyngallery.co.nz or from the gallery.

Grandparents visit Lincoln pupils A Box Brownie, pocket fob watch, Janet and John schoolbook and even a 65-year-old doll named Rosebud, were all on show at Lincoln Primary School last week when grandparents were invited to come into the classrooms of Syndicate One pupils. The syndicate’s learning topic for this term is Back to the Future – they are learning about the past, present and even thinking about how life will change in the future. The children shared their mihi with their grandparents, followed by the song – Oh Grandma, Grandpa I Love You. Time was then spent with grandparents and “honorary” grandparents, in a variety of activities including children reading the stories they had written for them. It wasn’t just the schoolchildren learning about the past, grandparents were shown how learn-

ing looks at present. The children shared the technology they now use in their classrooms and teachers explained about the collaborative teaching methods now used – widely different from learning environments of 60-plus years ago. Joyce Soppet shared photos with her granddaughter Jordyn Belmonte, and her friend Isabella Coleman, which showed exactly how it was when Joyce was at school. “We didn’t have coloured photos like you have at school, we didn’t have carpet like you do now – we just had boards on the floor to sit on.” For Geoff Beveridge it was a chance to create a family shield with grandson Fletcher Beveridge. Fletcher was also able to wear the medals of his great-grandfather Trevor (Geoff ’s father), who served in the army as a regular soldier, in spite of having suffered from polio.

to visit Lincoln

New Zealand’s most-capped netball player will be coming to Lincoln next week. Irene van Dyk will be hosting a charity lunch at the Lincoln Event Centre on September 19 to raise money for South New Brighton School, which is in need of new netball equipment. “I’m really looking forward to the visit,” van Dyk said. “It is always a pleasure to meet the fans and also to be able to give back to New Zealanders who have supported me for many years.” The luncheon has been organised by House of Travel’s netball arm Silver Ferns Travel – which van Dyk is an ambassador for. House of Travel on Victoria and Silver Ferns Travel director Dave Williams said it was a great thrill to have her on board. There will be the chance for one lucky luncheon attendee to win two nights’ accommodation and two tickets to the Fast5 Netball World Series on November 8 and 9. School children will also have the opportunity to meet her at the Selwyn Netball Courts in Lincoln between 3.15pm and 4.15 pm on the same day. Tickets for the charity luncheon can be booked at www.silverfernstravel.co.nz

Mixed skill set earns victory Ellesmere College’s year 7 and 8 netball and rugby teams have found success at the Canterbury region winter tournaments. The rugby team went unbeaten, but needed a last-minute try and conversion to knock off St Thomas of Canterbury College 14-12 in the final. The netball team also made their final unbeaten, but went down 6-12 to Sumner School.

A ‘black and yellow’ team made up of students from Lincoln, Halswell, and Kirkwood Intermediate won the year 7 and 8 grade of the Selwyn primary schools basketball competition, beating the Clearview Celtics 22-21 in the final. The Leeston Wildcats won the year 5 and 6 grade, beating the Ladbrooks Tigers 16-12 in the final. The tournament was run by Lincoln High School in partnership with Canterbury Basketball, and had a 50 per cent increase in participation compared to last year, with 10 teams taking part in each grade. Many of the players involved play for the representative side the Selwyn Raiders in the Canterbury Basketball primary all-stars competition on Sunday afternoons.

High-value fungi

Tasty: The edible Saffron milk cap, lactarius deliciosus.

SCIENTISTS COULD OPEN UP NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE NEW ZEALAND FORESTRY INDUSTRY following recent research into the cultivation and commercialisation of two edible fungi crops: saffron milk cap (lactarius deliciosus) and bianchetto truffle (tuber borchii).

L

incoln-based Plant and Food Research’s Dr Alexis Guerin and Hon Associate Professor Wang Yun have been investigating the highvalue delicacies on a farm in Lincoln with successful and tasty results. “These crops could be the next innovative gourmet export food product for New Zealand,” Dr Guerin says. “Elsewhere in the world they are highly regarded for their potential health benefits and even support a dedicated truffle tourism industry.” In New Zealand, truffles retail for around $3000 per kilogram, but as Dr Guerin points out, “You don’t need one kg to enjoy them, the flavour is powerful and sensational. A few grams per person is enough for some of the best recipes.” While Périgord black truffles have been grown commercially in Europe since the early 1800s, it was not until the 1970s that scientists improved the cultivation methods. Similarly, the cultivation of most other edible mycorrhizal mushrooms is still very much in its infancy. The research into saffron milk cap mushrooms provides another commercial opportunity. “We harvested 85kg of saffron milk cap in the 2014 season from January to May. The

high yield was in part because of irrigation on some sites and very favourable conditions with warm temperatures and regular rainfall,” Dr Guerin says. Both crops are the fruits of perennial fungi that live in symbiosis with trees. The fungi colonise roots and transform them into mycorrhizae (from Greek, ‘fungus-root’), real root organs resulting from the merger between plant and fungal tissues. The fungus supplies the tree with water and nutrients, while the tree provides the fungus with soluble carbohydrates from photosynthesis. The research, which was published in the international journal Mycorrhiza, also showed a symbiotic relationship between host pines, onset of fruiting and mushroom yields, potentially improving the value of pine plantations by providing a secondary income and competitive control of the invasive and poisonous amanita muscaria (fly agaric). Yet while research to date has yielded promising results, Dr Guerin notes that for both crops more research is required to further develop the young and edible mycorrhizal mushroom industry in New Zealand, particularly understanding the factors that affect yields and the post-harvest storage, packaging and shelf life of the gourmet delicacies.

New programme to

tackle global

challenges

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY HAS LAUNCHED A NEW NATIONWIDE PROGRAMME DESIGNED TO ENGAGE SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS with some of the most pressing issues facing humankind and the planet today.

T

he Global Challenges Programme aims to put a spotlight on global concerns, such as food production and security, depleting resources, urban sprawl, climate change, the loss of biodiversity and pollution, by providing teaching resources that align with secondary school curricula. A key component of the Global Challenges Programme is the Global Challenges Scholarships. Every year, the university will provide up to 100 full tuition scholarships for ‘new to Lincoln’ students. Applicants are required to demonstrate an

interest in, or sound awareness of, a global challenge and create a short video outlining how their studies at Lincoln will help with tackling this problem. Scholarship recipients will also act as ambassadors of the programme, actively contributing to ensure the programme produces tangible outcomes. Part of this will include working directly with schools and expanding the programme into the community via outreach activities aimed at encouraging grassroots action. “We think it’s important to get a large body of students consistently coming through who

are thinking seriously about these problems,” SchoolsLinc programme manager Fiona Scott says. “They are complex issues and come with very real consequences depending on how they are managed. For each generation, the stakes get higher.” The Global Challenges Programme is a manifestation of the three causes underwritten in Lincoln University’s teaching and research, namely feed the world, protect the future and live well. “We see the Global Challenges Programme and the scholarships as being something

quite unique,” Lincoln University assistant vice-chancellor business development Jeremy Baker says. “Often, these kind of initiatives are based around a very specific subject or they look at learning outcomes for a particular group of people. In this case, we are interested in a cause: one which is multifaceted and of interest to the entire planet.” Applications for Global Challenges Scholarships close on October 1, 2014. More information can be found at www.lincoln. ac.nz/Studying-at-Lincoln/Scholarshipsand-prizes/Global-Challenges-Programme/.

Camellias for Colour! Camellias have been colouring gardens for many centuries with thousands of stunning hybrids that, for the purchaser, open an extensive choice of colour, flower size, plant height and a variety of flowering seasons. They are a hardy plant and will be happy in almost any garden. When considering a Camellia remember these four points to help produce a healthy plant: 1.

1

2

Salt of the earth Rachel Vogan explains what is required to produce a bumper crop of potatoes.

P

OTATOES are a bread-and-butter crop, with origins that date back centuries. The high-carb tubers are packed full of fibre, potassium and vitamins B and C, and, best of all, they taste far better than they look. It isn’t the health benefits that see me getting excited about seed potatoes appearing in the shops. It is the end results. I am a potato head. I come from a long line of potato growers and lovers; they were a staple in my grandparents’ garden, still are in my father’s garden and in our garden, too. Potatoes are an easy crop to grow, with the quickest varieties taking about three months to mature from planting, through to the longer-term crops that take four to five months. Initially, not a lot of effort is required,

other than sprouting seed potatoes. Don’t be tempted to plant those runaway ones you find at the bottom of the vegetable bin or pantry that have begun to sprout. Those rouge escapees will never produce a decent harvest, therefore making them not worth the effort. Planting certified seed potatoes gives you the assurance that the potatoes are free from pests and diseases, true to type and more reliable growers. Lay seed potatoes in a single layer, in a tray or box, in a cool, dark area. While the seed potatoes are sprouting, prepare the area in which you plan to plant them. Seed potatoes are available to buy in all sorts of places, from hardware shops to supermarkets, over the next couple of months.

Feeding Potatoes enjoy a balanced diet; they are a greedy crop. For best results, use specific potato fertiliser prior to planting. The trick is to make sure fertiliser is well mixed into the soil before planting seed potatoes. The young potato is very sensitive and might get burnt by the fertiliser if it isn’t mixed well enough into the soil. For those who have no other option and wish to do everything in one day, you can instead sprinkle the fertiliser on top of the soil after planting and water it in.

Fertiliser is important for all your plants,

but flowering plants especially benefit from regular fertilising programme (Spring and Autumn), this will enhance their lush growth and increase flowering 2.

We all know Camellias prefer a slightly

acid soil, however, the mistake can be made to overload the acid, so follow instructions on packaging to ensure the correct amount is applied 3.

Watering: Camellias can be grown in

full sun, or full shape but do prefer a part sun/ shade position with deep watering e.g. 1 – 2 times per week (as opposed to a short daily water). The soil must be free draining (not water logged) 4.

If you have an exposed garden, young

Camellias will not appreciate being in the direct line of a strong wind, if this is a problem in your garden, we suggest you erect trellis to help filter the wind

Prepare your Vegetable Patch now! Every garden should have space to grow a few vegetables - all you need is a small sunny corner of your garden to grow some rewarding results. Loosen the soil and dig in compost/ organic matter to make a light medium for your vegetables to grow in. At Evergreen Garden Centre, we have a great range of vegetables sold in 6 packs and also, vegetable combination packs too (for the smaller garden). Every 6 weeks, plant a new pack of lettuce plants, then you will have a continuous fresh supply of lettuce for summer. Companion planting (e.g. garlic or marigolds) is a good idea to deter pests and encourage bees .

Planting Strawberries

Strawberries and tomatoes growth are both enhanced with the same plant food… so if you have any tomato fertiliser from last season, use it up on your strawberries when you plant them. Plant your strawberries in a new garden patch every year (well drained, sunny). Plant in well composted soil, 40cm apart in raised mounds as this increases drainage and air circulation, water in well. Over the summer months it is important to continue to water frequently to encourage fruit growth, however decrease watering once fruit is starting to colour up.

STRAWBERRY PLANTS

Mounding Mounding up the soil around your potato plants keeps the sun off the developing crop, improves drainage and increases the potential harvest.

Watering

3

Potatoes are made up of a lot of water, which they absorb from the soil as they develop. Keep the crops well watered through drier periods. Rather than watering a little every day, give beds a decent soak two or three times a week, or pour a bucket of water over tubs and containers.

Planting Whether you choose to grow spuds in the ground or in large tubs, it is essential they get plenty of sun and are planted into soil or garden mix that is loose, friable and to a depth of 30cm. In the garden, dig over the soil and blend in a good layer of sheep pellets or compost. This organic matter will add nutrients to the soil and increase the soil’s ability to hold onto moisture, which is vital as the crop begins to develop. Next, blend in potato fertiliser. Plant in rows 30cm apart, about 20cm deep. Within a matter of weeks, the new shoots will appear through the soil. These are very frost tender, so for those that live in areas where a sneaky late frost might occur, cover the tops with a sheet or frost cloth on such nippy nights. To grow in containers, simply fill them with a good potting mix or vegetable mix and plant in the same way.

VIBRANT: Dahlias like dry, well-drained soil, they will reward with bright colours in most hues except blue.

Dahlia: The perfect summer romance BY TOD PALENSKI

After a blossoming romance this summer? Let me introduce you to the delightful dahlia. If you’ve had enough of those needy, high-maintenance varieties, dahlia might just be the fresh start you’re after. After all, this vibrant plant isn’t looking for much – just a dry, exposed area of your garden with

well-drained soil. It’s also partial to being placed in the middle of a simple pot where the soil is also dry. If it’s colour you’re looking for, our dahlia has it in spades – reds, oranges, yellows and pinks . . . in fact, most hues except blue. And if that isn’t appealing enough for you, the Mexican native is also a resilient young thing,

which tends to fend off diseases with ease. Interested? Simply grab some seedlings. To get started, dig a small hole and plant your seedling. Space each plant about 200mm apart. Then sit back, play it cool, and in about eight weeks you’ll be rewarded with an array of floral

fervour that will last the entire summer – even when it’s hot and dry. Pick off any dead heads to encourage flowering and, as long as you’ve chosen the right spot for planting, your dahlia will get to about 200mm high. Worried you may not be the perfect match for your plant? Don’t worry – the dahlia will get plenty

of long-time love if placed next to lavender, delphiniums, irises and roses. It also works well if you’re on the rebound from spring bulbs, flowering about the same time as your bulbs die down. Oh, and one last thing: if you want to treat your dahlia to be a bit of something extra special – try a touch of fertiliser or compost.

I saw the World’s Fastest Indian lead character watering his citrus in an unusual way and I am looking for advice for mine. I don’t really want to pee on it! What do you recommend?

IGRO AN INTELL CK PRIZE PA T VALUED A $50.00!

Answer: September is the time to give citrus their first lot of fertiliser for the season. As the spring growth will start towards the end of the month so it is important to have the nutrients available to promote good growth and flower development. Citrus have shallow roots, so during their growing and fruit development season, they need plenty of water and fertiliser. They need fertilising 3 times per year; September, December and February. Plants must be well watered regularly, especially during the hot dry weather that we get in February and March - this is when the fruit is developing. A good mulch at the base of the plants is needed to give a good healthy plant that will crop well. Acid citrus fertilisers at about 25 grams per metre sq. The pruning of citrus is usually done just before they start to grow in early September, so now is a great time to do it if you haven’t already. To do this you will thin out the centre of the plant, removing any thin spindly growth. It is also a good idea to trim around the outside, reducing some of the branches so that air can circulate through the plant. As you harvest the fruit, trim back the branches they have come from. This will help to promote future growth.

Now is the time to be replenishing existing herb gardens or planting out new ones. Existing herb plants should be cut back and fed with something like Nitrophoska extra, blood and bone pellets or sheep pellets. Once the area is tidied up, add a layer of mulch. Plant batches of soft herbs now such like coriander, parsley, dill, chervil and rocket. All of these can be grown from seed, but ready grown seedlings are the quicker option and in some cases are almost ready to use as soon as they are planted. Rosemary, oregano, thyme, chives, sage, bay and marjoram. These are ready to be planted now too. It is still too early to plant Basil, it is a terribly frost tender herb that

only ever thrives in the warmest months. If you want to start these from seeds you can do so, and keep them in a nice warm sunny spot indoors.

• Fertilisers • Lawn Mix • Decorative Pebbles

Herbs require full sun, good soil and plenty of water through dry spells. Most herbs need 6 to 8 hours sunlight a day to thrive, the exception is mint as this will happily thrive in a shady damp spot almost anywhere.

• Vege Garden Mix • Lime Chip • Screened Top Soil • Bark Mulches & Nuggets

Lacking space in the garden? No need to worry because there are numerous herb varieties that are adaptable to pots and containers. The trick to on-going success is to make sure the pot is big enough. Small pots may seem sensible when the herbs are small, but as they grow, their roots quickly fill up the soil space and use up all the nutrients, so when it comes to pots big is better. When replanting pots with herbs, tip out the old potting mix and fill with patio plus potting mix, this will see the herbs through the season. Don’t forget that herbs also do great in hanging baskets! Not only do they save you space, they also look great!

citrus fruits are nutritious, easy to grow and a great addition to your garden. Now is the best time to plant citrus trees, preferably in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot. Make sure you choose the right variety for your region, especially if you live in a colder climate as citrus are quite frost tender.

Time to plant summer tomatoes BY TOD PALENSKI

Tomaato, tomayto . . . however you pronounce it, this bright red delight is certainly a staple. From adding a healthy, fresh touch to a lunchtime sandwich or providing the base for a whole raft of dinnertime delicacies, it’s a must-have in any good home garden. And while it’s quick and easy to grab a few toms from your local store or simply open a can (as I do on occasion), there’s nothing quite like the taste of a home-grown one. As we spring into the warmer months (hopefully the chill is starting to abate at your place), now’s a good time to get out into your vege patch and put the groundwork in place for a healthy summer crop. To get started, grab some seedlings. Don’t be too conservative when it comes to plant numbers – tomatoes are so versatile I reckon you can never have too many. When thinking about the best place to plant your seedlings, look for somewhere that’s sunny, but sheltered from strong winds. And here’s a tip: if you’ve grown tomatoes before, plant them somewhere different this time. You’ll reduce the chances of your tomatoes developing nasty diseases like blight. If garden space is limited, why

MAINTENANCE: It is recommended that as laterals develop on tomato plants they are picked off. Tomatoes make good companions with marigolds. not give pots a go? The bright red fruit will add a welcome splash of colour to your porch or deck. You can even plant cherry tomatoes in the middle of hanging baskets, with a range of herbs around the outside, as long as you position them in a warm, sunny spot. If it’s been a wet winter where you are, add a bit of lime to your earth. That’s because tomatoes thrive in soil with a moderate pH and large amounts of rain tend to lower your soil’s acidity level. Don’t forget to dig in compost to

improve soil conditions. Once your prep work is complete, dig a hole, approximately 3cms deep and space your tomato seedlings about one foot apart. Fill in the holes with soil. Once planted, spray your tomatoes with liquid copper to prevent fungal diseases. And add a general fertiliser, like nitrophoska blue, to the soil surrounding the tomatoes to encourage large, juicy fruit. When it comes to watering, avoid overhead hosing as it can leave your plants more susceptible

to diseases like downy mildew, rust, and blight. A better way to keep your plants moist is to layer newspaper around them, and then cover the newspaper with peastraw. This creates mulch that will prevent your plants drying out during the day and in between watering sessions. I also recommend picking off the laterals as they develop. If you imagine a tomato plant has a main trunk that grows straight up with branches growing off this trunk at roughly 90 degrees, the laterals

are the smaller stems that develop at approximately 45 degrees in between the main trunk and branch. Often laterals won’t produce fruit but can produce a lot of leaves. If you pick them off it allows the plant to put all its energy into growing fruit, rather than a whole lot of leaves you don’t need. Apply the same formula for working out the laterals on the main trunk to working out which are the laterals on each subsequent branch. Make sense? And if spring hasn’t quite sprung in your neck of the woods, try cutting the base off two-litre plastic milk bottles (recycle the base) and place the remaining parts of the bottles over the seedlings. These mini greenhouses will protect your plants from frosts and cold winds. Once your tomato seedlings grow a bit taller they’ll need staking to help stabilise and protect them from strong winds. You can do this any way you like but I prefer the teepee method. Take three stakes and place them in the ground with the tomato plant in the middle, then tie the stakes together at the top with rope or string. And why not get the kids to decorate the stakes while you’re at it? Simply follow these instructions and I bet you’ll have a great crop of anti-oxidant rich fruit by November, adding colour to your garden and flavour to your plate.

public for viewing, and I would encourage prospective home-builders and the general public to make the most of this opportunity to visit an award-winning home,” said McLeod. “Seeing a house in real life is often preferable than looking at floor plans, and may help clients decide what they are really looking for in a new home.”

Canterbury company Today Homes has won two Registered Master Builders House of the Year 2014 awards for its Rolleston show home in the Faringdon subdivision. The 4-bedroom Manhatten show home was the Canterbury winner of the Gib Show Home Award and also earned a 2014 Gold Award. Today Homes’ General Manager Dean McLeod said that the company was thrilled to learn that it had won two awards when the Canterbury awards were presented early last month. “We are really excited to have the quality of our workmanship and design recognised in this prestigious competition once again, after also being successful in 2011”, said McLeod.

With a floor area of 258m2, the Manhatten offers the space needed for comfortable family living. It has a contemporary design and boasts four double bedrooms, a generous living area, separate media lounge, and an entertainers’ kitchen and pantry. The master bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and large ensuite.

Other features of the house include a study nook, a separate laundry, double garage, stone bench-tops, energy-efficient LED lighting and a double-sided gas fire. The exterior cladding is a low maintenance and modern combination of plaster over brick and powder-coated aluminium weatherboards. Today Homes’ Manhatten show home is located at 9 Stanford Way, Faringdon, Rolleston, and is open for viewing from 12pm to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

The parents retreat is an added bonus centred on providing relaxation, with its impressive private features. The separate laundry, toilet and storage loft are but a few of the expansive list of additional benefits. The home, idyllically situated on a hand picked north westerly facing section, is perfect for outdoor entertaining. This prestigious Rolleston/Faringdon Home and Land package is a must to view. BMW 2-Series highly desirable SPECIFICATIONS

Performance, luxury and style are major reasons why buyers choose BMW. And as time has served to prove, more and more BMW models are incorporating those ingredients. Take the latest to come my way, the 220i Coupe. It oozes style with its low, sleek shape, it has performance to envy with its 135kW engine and has a high level of specification worthy of a luxury tag. The 220i Coupe is essentially based on the 1-Series platform, the nomenclature distancing itself a little from the hatch and sedan shapes of its stablemate. The 220i’s design is curvy yet aggressive, it has a shape which lures comment and desire, yet it also has practicality which doesn’t always present itself with coupe designs. The latter is particularly noticeable, the 220i offers easy entry and egress up front, the doors aren’t overly wide so they aren’t a nuisance in close confines, while there’s also the benefit of reasonable leg room for those who are confined to the two rear seats. The 220i is only available here in two variants at present. The test car was listing at $71,700 in base form, there is a six-cylinder M235i model at $104,800, but for my money the entry-level fourcylinder is the pick, it is dynamic, comfortable and a heck of a lot of fun. It is also loaded with the packages that BMW has developed so that safety and fuel efficiency isn’t compromised. One is labelled EfficientDynamics and it is simply an energy regeneration system under deceleration, and along with an economy driving mode prompts are made so that the driver is aware that fuel usage saving targets can be easily met. According to BMW the 220i can

ratios are close, prompting a lively engine feel. Of course, the 220i doesn’t need to be driven aggressively but when it is it feels strong, akin to the performance aspect of BMW. At city speeds it is docile and feeds power gently so that stop-start traffic is relaxing. I took the test car on a long test incorporating a series of tight and twisting corners interspersed with the long straights for which Canterbury is synonymous. The 220i characteristically drives through the rear axles and, in the first instance, that provides a natural handling feel along with the steering that is weighted for perfect feel in regards to what the tyres are doing in relation to the road surface. The 220i has steering which makes the car feel like it is riding on velvet, every nuance of the road surface is cushioned but delivered back to the driver so that he or she understands the handling characteristics. BMW is strong on safety and the electronic devices which control traction are there so that the rear end stays stable under power. However, the chassis is so advanced that the car doesn’t rely on the safety devices, it can be

driven hard yet grip is rarely challenged. The low profile Bridgestone Potenza tyres (225/40 x 18in and 245/35 x 18in) have a solid tenure with the road and, what’s more, they are quiet and have a lot of absorption through the sidewall so that ride comfort isn’t compromised. The spring and damper rates within the fully independent front-strut/rear multiple link set up are also set as a comfort compromise; sure, the 220i with its low body height isn’t affected by gravitational change anyway, but body movement is well contained by the suspension without the cost of a hard ride. On my inland test the 220i provided one of the great drives of 2014. It is balanced, sharp in the steering and has power which enables it to accelerate quickly between corners, yet will brake and turn with uncanny ability. The 220i is a true driver’s car and rewards with its lithe and nimble nature. I can’t wait until other engine combinations arrive down under, diesel power is a certainty, while the 240kW engine of the M-Sport model would be a powerhouse of true proportions. And not forgetting the 220i has the glitz to go with the glamour, it has all the major specification ingredients such as satellite navigation and stop-start fuel saving technology included in the price, along with an option list which spans several A4 sheets of paper. The test car was fitted with a $4000 M-Sport option which adds gloss to an already well polished car. The 220i is certainly another car for the Lotto win wish list.

Account Executive We are seeking an Account Executive to join our sales team. With the Christchurch market very strong in the building and home market, the opportunities for advertising sales are very exciting. Ideally applicants will have previous experience in media sales (but this is not essential), and we encourage anyone who believes they have the ability and passion to build advertising relationships and build on the success of these brands to apply. We are seeking a dedicated organized person with a determination to succeed. Applicants should be able to work to targets and budgets, be able to build long-term sustainable relationships with our customers, build new business, and be an “ideas’’ person working in a team environment. Remuneration and employment conditions are excellent. The successful applicant will be based at The Christchurch Star Company located in central Christchurch. The Christchurch Star Company is a diversified media business. Our flagship The Star is one of the country’s largest newspapers by circulation and the country’s only free metropolitan newspaper. The company also publishes six community newspapers, several lifestyle and trading magazines and award winning feature publications. Our growing online presence includes digital editions of all our newspapers, websites and New Zealand’s largest media facebook community. The company also organises two of the city’s most iconic annual events, The Star City 2 Surf and The Star Home and Leisure Show. If you are a confident person seeking a challenge and are prepared to work under pressure but enjoy the rewards, you will love this opportunity. Applications will be processed on a rolling basis until filled, so if this is of interest please send in your CV promptly. Peter Hampton, Advertising Manager, Christchurch Star.
