On a recent winter evening, the moon broke through the veil of drizzly clouds shrouding the city and shone on the new elegant building in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. The razorsharp, clean-edged edifice standing proudly, overlooking the Avon River was iIex Cafe & Events, which officially opened that evening. Invited guests travelled by quiet electric shuttle to be greeted at the door with bubbly and a warm welcome to the modern, light and versatile

function centre. Able to accommodate up to 180 guests, ilex is named after the quercus ilex or holm oak, the leaves of which were used by the Romans to fashion wreaths of honour presented to heroes, and valued more than leaves of gold. Superb food, complemented by fabulous wines and imaginative cocktails, gave attendees the perfect introduction to ilex, the crowning wreath of Christchurch catering.
