Focus on Canty’s weather

‘CEREC’ & cosmetic dentistry

A passion for weather could soon turn a profit for the student-run Canterbury Weather Updates Facebook page. The page began as the brainchild of Burnside High School student Josh Oliver, 17, who felt the need to provide a service specific to Canterbury during the freak storm which struck the region in June 2013. It has since attracted more than 40,000 followers. Josh gathered his information from Global Forecast System and Air Resource Laboratory graphs and interpreted them to reflect weather patterns in the region. He said although other weather services such as MetService were good, it was clear they were a Government forecast service and he wanted to create a personalised service specific to Canterbury. When the interest of the page exploded with more than 11,000 followers in one day, Josh recruited fellow weather enthusiasts, Russell Voice, 27, Michael Ford, 34, and Leighton Thomas, 26, to assist him with the day-today running of the service. The weather enthusiasts’ goal was to provide the most up-todate accurate forecast for the Canterbury region and with their new personalised updates system which would provide a specialised forecast service to cater the need of their clients.
