24/09 25/09 // Summer’s drawing to a close and the parks are getting a bit ‘leafy’, it can only mean that autumn is nearly upon us which also means that The Joiners has got another awesome selection of bands visiting Southampton! September highlights include ex Razorlight man Andy Burrow’s brand new band I Am Arrows playing to those lucky enough to have grabbed a ticket (sold out), as well as local metalcore heroes Bury Tomorrow creating a Joiners first; TWO headline dates back to back!

Ugly Duckling.

Futures.

Their namesake is a Danish fairytale (which they took while feeling like outcasts on the Southern California hip hop scene of the mid-1990s) and their bling we can only suspect a present from LA, but Ugly Duckling’s tunes are all their own. ‘One of the most prominent underground hip hop groups’ is what they were crowned by Paul Edwards in last year’s, ‘How to Rap: the Art & Science of the Hip Hop MC’ and who are we do disagree? Label mates with The Cool Kids and The Horrors, the three piece mix samples, scratches and heavy beats aplenty.

Futures formed last year from the debris of Tonight Is Goodbye. After debut single ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ was all over video stations such as Kerrang, Scuzz and NME TV, they released their debut CD in March as a free giveaway in Rock Sound magazine which caused so much of a stir that they were quickly given a contract with Mercury Records! With approximately 20,000 copies of the CD circulating, Futures are a band that has successfully shot themselves to the top of the ladder. Their headline slot on this year’s Kerrang Introducing Stage at Slam Dunk Festival is an early sign of the heights this band are capable of reaching.

The Ghost of a Thousand. The Ghost of a Thousand are a boundary pushing hardcore punk band. If you’re into hardcore and fast paced punk then there first album ‘This Is Where The Fight Begins’ will have grabbed your attention, though second album ‘New Hopes, New Demonstrations’ will absolutely blow you away. The band have taken their punk and hardcore roots and progressed their sound towards a more rock n’ roll edge. They’re headlining this year’s WTFest!?, a three day hardcore and punk fest from Wrongwayround Promotions spread across several venues (check out ‘Blacklisted’ 04/09’ @ The Joiners and ‘The Skints’ 05/09 @ Unit) with weekend tickets available from www.joinerslive.co.uk

Ricky Warwick - Acoustic.

Ricky Warwick - Acoustic // 19/09 www.myspace.com/rickywarwick

Ricky Warwick is best known as the front man for ‘The Almighty’ (ten Top 40 singles and four Top 20 albums no less) but began his solo career in 2003 with his gritty rock fuelled by whiskey and tales of a misspent youth with his first solo album produced by none other than Def Leppard’s very own Joe Elliot. The newly appointed lead singer of Thin Lizzy will be gracing the stage at the Joiners stage in a very special acoustic show on Ricky ‘The Ricky Feckin Warwick Tour’ to promote new single ‘The Whiskey song’ which features Nathan Connolly from Snow Patrol.

Plants and Animals.

Plants and Animals // 20/09 www.myspace.com/plantsandanimals

Their MySpace page describes them as ‘indie/rock/healing & easy listening’ but we reckon the sounds produced by Plants and Animals are just a bit bloomin’ lovely to be honest. Hailing from Montreal via Nova Scotia, Warren, Matthew and Nicholas grace our stage on September 20th; expect to hear tracks from their April released second LP’ La La Land’ in the form of ‘The Mama Papa’, ‘Tom Cruz’ and the like. Signed to Secret City Records the band are from the same ilk as Brooklyn’s The Antlers and Selkirk’s Frightened Rabbit, making Plants & Animals a must-see for fans of either.

Futures // 21/09 www.myspace.com/futures

Acey Slade and the Dark Party. New Yorker Acey Slade has played in a plethora of well-known bands, notably ‘Murder Dolls’ and ‘Trashlight Vision’. His new solo album/band project ‘The Dark Party’ is both rock and electronic and is set to take the UK rock scene by storm. Dressed in his full Murderdolls uniform Total Guitar say ‘Acey Slade is a rock star, the genuine article’ with the new tracks that him and his band have laid down being sonically and emotionally exciting. We’re sure that the next chapter in Acey Slade’s colourful music career will be a success.on this visit.

WWR Presents: Polar Bear Club @ The Joiners // 11/08 Support at this WrongWayRound promoted show was of the highest calibre with impressive locals Dance Karate opening proceedings followed by Brightoners The Fallthrough setting an energetic pace. Next up The Computers, with a fantastic bluesy punk sound and front man Alex’s unique way of engaging the crowd by backing into them butt first. It may leave his guitar unplugged at times but it works perfectly and makes them a live band that you have to experience. Main support Crazy Arm come from the other end of the spectrum but nevertheless were just as fun to watch. Their fist pumping rock n roll was broke up by a very easily listening folk acoustic song that shows they too have more than one genre up their sleeves.

Headliners Polar Bear Club said it themselves; The Joiners has become an important part of their UK tour, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. Taking evidence from the reaction of the crowd, I’m sure they wouldn’t either. It’s hard not to admire the genre shifting live performance put on by the five-some from the Big Apple. They almost effortlessly seem to blend together the best parts of hardcore, pop punk and indie creating a live show full of soft melodies, harsh riffs and irresistible singalongs that can have a crowd being thrown around a room or arms rose shouting their hearts out all in the same song. Even after an hour long set and a late finish the crowd still shouted for more.

We Are Rockstars & SPC Presents: Beatbullys 11/09 With radio support from the likes of Scott Mills, Fearne Cotton and Greg James, Beatbullyz seem to be on a mission to take over the airwaves in 2010. New single 'Bounce', produced by Jim Eliot (Ladyhawke, Kylie) is a bonafide summer anthem with their debut album due in October. Best described as 'five twenty somethings who craft sparkling, idiosyncratic cut-and-paste pop', they absolutely tore The Loft apart last time they visited Unit, don't miss the chance to catch them again!
