14/05

11/05 // It’s official; May is our favourite month of 2011! First up we welcome the self-confessed ‘love child of Damian Rice and Jay-Z’ (but not quite!) Ed Sheeran on May 11th with his unique brand of folk-hop that’ll no doubt become the soundtrack to this year’s summer. Following that on May 14th we play host to the contrasting rock’n’roll tones of Shadow Puppet and exRascal Miles Kane who’ll be showcasing tracks from breakaway debut solo album ‘My Fantasy’. But that’s not all - take a look at all the other delights we’ve got to offer this May!

The Sword.

The Sword // 08/05 www.myspace.com/thesword

As their name suggests this rock and roll metal band sing of long ago times, often including a mix of mythology within their lyrics. They sweep through their tracks with an unyielding talent that’s seen them tour beside legends such as Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica. Since forming in 2003 the band have quite often been compared to Black Sabbath, whilst listing Sleep, Melvin and Slayer among their influences. Their most recent album ‘Warp Riders’ is the band’s first ever concept album, debuting on the Billboard 200 chart in America at 47 to great critical acclaim.

Cerebral Ballzy.

Cerebral Ballzy // 10/05 www.myspace.com/cerebralballzy

There are three things in life that hardcore punks Cerebral Ballzy love; drinking, skating and partying. They certainly aren’t shy about their influences either, with song titles like “Sk8 Song” and “Underage Drink Forever”. Their sound mixes the old school 80s sound of hardcore bands like Black Flag, with the new school thrash of Municipal Waste, infusing their live performance with a real party atmosphere. Everyone from Vice to The Guardian have been raving about them, and after tearing apart Unit last year, they’re back in Southampton and ready to prove they can tackle the larger Joiners venue.

Twin Atlantic.

Twin Atlantic // 12/05 www.myspace.com/twinatlantic

What do you get when you mix 4 Glaswegian lads with some powerful stadium sized rock? With their intense live shows, and gargantuan dreams of success, there’s no stopping Twin Atlantic; “My ambition is so great for this band that I will never be happy until we’re one of the big guys,” says lead vocalist Sam. A band who excel onstage, they’ve played many of the Scottish Festivals, including T in the Park and Rockness and have received praise aplenty from the alternative music press. With new album ‘Free’ set for release on May 2nd, Sam’s dreams may well come true in 2011.

Allie Moss.

Allie Moss // 18/05 www.myspace.com/alliemossmusic

Eager ears will recognise this voice as the woman behind the soundtrack to the BT Infinity adverts with her song ‘Corner’. The more keen listeners among you will discover the depth of her tracks, those that voyage through broken hearts, city streets and empty rooms with her perfect pop ‘la la la’ melodies coupled with heartfelt narratives and strong vocals. Away from time spent as lead guitarist and best friend to Ingrid Michaelson, she also wrote the 2009 ‘Passerby’ EP; a winner of many hearts, and maybe yours too at The Joiners on May 18th.

Bright Light Bright Light.

Bright Light Bright Light // 25/05 www.myspace.com/brightlightx2

Bright Light Bright Light is Welsh songwriter, producer, remixer and multi-instrumentalist Rod Thomas - someone in love with the late 80s and early 90s and perfect pop music. Rod has leapt beyond the limitations of the four walls of his room onto the stages of Glastonbury and South by South West, supporting and remixing artists such as Ellie Goulding and Kelis along the way. With fans including Popjustice and NME and debut album ‘Make Me Believe in Hope’ set for release later in the year, big things are expected for this talented troubadour.

November Coming Fire.

November Coming Fire // 28/05 www.myspace.com/novembercomingfire

Tearing their way through the hardcore scene, Kentish smashers November Coming Fire are no newbies when it comes to this game. The band hid away for a terrible amount of time, but as 2011 rolled up, so did the lads and they’ve come back in full force with the re-release of their incredible record ‘Dungeness’, re-mastered and pressed onto sexy vinyl limited edition goodness through Thirty Days Of Night Records (a split release with the ever offensive Gallows). Along with the release of their new, heart wrenchingly heavy material ‘Evocation’, it doesn’t seem like they’re going to run off again anytime soon.

// The Qemists - live! @ The Joiners - 15/04 With the original date for this show being rescheduled, anticipation for The Qemists first live visit to Southampton had been building for quite a while, with fans of the drum and bass outfit keen to see how the festival favourites would fair on The Joiners stage. The crowd were warmed up by the up and coming talents of DJ Snatch, with a bass heavy selection of dubstep bangers testing the Joiners system before the carnage that was to ensue. Next up was hip hop artist Influx, nursing a cold didn’t stop him and producer Bailo from performing tracks including ‘Day To Night’ and a pretty nifty take on Drake’s ‘Over’. With plays on 1xtra and a lot of buzz building for this local lad it surely won’t be long before we see Influx make a bigger dent on radio and beyond. Finally it was time for The Qemists to show everyone why their performance was worth the wait. Kicking off with the hybrid breakbeat/drum

and bass monster of ‘Lost Weekend’, they set their stall out in what was to be an assault of bass, breaks and beats on the ever-loving crowd who couldn’t get enough. The Strobes were being used to their fullest to compliment the manic action on stage and the floor, whilst crowd favourites ‘Hurt Less’ and ‘Stompbox’ ensured that standing still was NOT an option. Ending their set with an encore of Radio 1 favourite and recent release ‘Take It Back’ (a collaboration with Enter Shikari), The Qemists proved why they are a formidable live act, leaving DJ Villain to pick up the pieces of the broken bodies they had left behind. He duly obliged, keeping the vibe going ‘til the early hours with a kaleidoscope of drum and bass blended in with some impressive scratching. Hopefully it won’t be long ‘til the rave returns to The Joiners once more.
