The History Of Patshull Hall Rich in heritage and Grade 1 listed, Patshull Hall was built circa 1750 by James Gibbs, one of Britain's most influential architects of the Georgian era. Commissioned by Sir John Astley the Hall replaced the original moated 13th century manor house set in a medieval deer park formally belonging to Robert de Stafford. While the Hall was virtually new it was sold to Sir George Pigot, Lord Mayor of Bridgnorth, later Governor of Madras and owner of the famous Pigot diamond. He was to engage Lancelot (Capability) Brown to landscape the park. Subsequently owned by the Earls of Dartmouth for over a hundred years, the surrounding Estate was gifted to the crown in 1958 in lieu of death duties. The Hall is nestled in a rich landscape that allows it to be hidden from the outside world but from its position commands full panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The magic of ‘Capability’ Brown was bestowed on the gardens in the late 18th century and his designs still surround the Hall in a revelation of colour and structure. The Hall is approached down a long driveway to a courtyard through the Triumphal Arch.Upon entering the house you are greeted by an imposing and grand front hall with iconic pilasters, raised wall panels, a naive style painting of Sir John de Astley, a beautiful stone fireplace and an awe inspiring 19th century coved ceiling. The plasterwork throughout the Hall is outstanding and in particular in the saloon where swags, ribbons, wreaths, fruit and flowers are just some of the works attributed to Italian stuccoist Guiseppe Artari. This is the largest and finest room in the Hall, with light streaming in through three arched windows which open on to a balcony. Just a few steps lead you to the terrace and the view of the awe-inspiring vista beyond. The flair of Gibbs work continues throughout the Hall into the music room, large drawing rooms and blue dining room which all shine out like little gems from the Hall’s crown. Beyond the library is the breath-taking ballroom with it views over the Italian style gardens.
