Welcome to the March edition of ‘The Viewer’ I’m pleased to say Spring is in the air and the cold winter days are hopefully now behind us. I would like to remind you that the clocks go forward 1 hour on 31st March which happens to be Easter Sunday. I wish you all a restful and peaceful Easter weekend. However, if you are looking for something to do, please see our ‘Local Events’ pages 52 and 53. This month we will be celebrating Mothering Sunday. A day when we give presents, flowers and cards to our mothers to say ‘Thankyou’ for their love and care. A lot of busy mums put everything and everyone before themselves, so perhaps a voucher for a relaxing facial, manicure or massage would be really appreciated (well, it would be in this house!!!). Of course flowers are always welcome too - see pages 23, 44, 45 and 56 for your local Beauticians, Hairdressers, Florist and other great gift ideas! Also, we are delighted to inform you that we have increased our circulation to include a further 2000 homes. This will mean a lot more opportunities for our advertisers and a great new source of information for many more local residents. For all our new readers, I would like to extend a special welcome and hope you find the magazine useful and interesting! Finally, if you have any charity or community events happening in the area, please call us, we will be happy to include it in the magazine.

Until next time!

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice celebrate the Year of the Snake with the launch of the 15th Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival!

T

o celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices has joined with Gable Events to launch the 15th Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival. The 2013 Festival takes place on Saturday 15th June on the River Nene at the Embankment, Peterborough and is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated team events in the region. Over 30 crews representing companies, organisations, clubs & groups of friends from all over Peterborough and the surrounding area are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course. They will all be seeking to become champions whilst also aiming to add to the event’s impressive fund-raising total of more than £200,000 for charity over the years. Owing to its successful introduction last year, teams will again be racing the smaller 11 person dragon boats and multiple crew discounts are available for those companies wishing to enter more than one team. The Festival will also be taking place on a Saturday for the second year. Dragon boat racing has an ancient Chinese history and the Festival is a re-enactment of a tragic event that took place more than 2,000 years ago in the kingdom of Chu. Legend has it that falsely accused of treason and exiled by jealous rivals in the government, despairing warrior poet, Qu Yuan, threw himself into the Mi Lo River. Local fishermen rowed out to save the drowning poet and tried to rescue him from vicious fish by beating the water with their paddles. But their attempts failed and every year in Hong Kong a Tuen Ng (Dragon Boat) Festival is held as a mark of respect for the fishermen’s frantic efforts and to commemorate the tragic death of Qu Yuan. The dragon boat’s fierce looking dragon’s heads were added later to ward off evil spirits and in Hong Kong special dumplings are eaten to represent the dumplings that were thrown in to the river to stop the fish eating the mighty Qu’s body.

8

The 2013 Chinese calendar, is the Year of the Snake. As snakes are known for their pride, cunning and intelligence, this should result in some interesting races! No previous experience is required to take part in the dragon boat racing, just plenty of team spirit. Thankfully, you don’t need the physical strength of Steve Redgrave or the athleticism of Jessica Ennis to be successful as teamwork and timing win the day. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. The Festival offers a full day of fun on land as well as water with plenty of activities on the bankside to entertain teams and spectators between races. The event is supported by Peterborough City Council, the Peterborough Telegraph and Heart 102.7. EACH is the children’s hospice service for families in Peterborough and the surrounding area. They provide care and support wherever the family wishes – in families’ own homes, in hospital or at one of their hospices in Milton, Ipswich & Quidenham. Debbie Fairhurst, Corporate Fundraiser at EACH, comments: “The money raised through the generosity of the teams taking part in the Dragon Boat Festival is very important to us and will go towards the one-to-one nursing care and support that is so vital to life-threatened local children and their families”. The top fundraisers for EACH will win the charity trophy plus a prize meal at Nando’s, Peterborough. For further information and an entry form visit www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/peterborough or call Gable Events on 01780 470 718. You would want to try it on or see it on a mannequin with other items before you commit to making an investment”. With the understanding that some men may leave their partners to take care of the finer details of the purchase, they have provided an area with a comfortable sofa, magazines and a glass of wine where they can relax while waiting. Unlike big department stores, Ray and Paul use their own professional carpet fitters and inhouse m a c h i n i s ts , guaranteeing you an all round quality service.

Does life have to be a pain? Christmas & New Year is now a distant memory, the Mayans turned out to be wrong, the world did not end and so you still have to face life! Family dramas, work stress, the stress of just getting through each day can sometimes be a full time job.

I

f you are a keen horse rider, maybe your body alignment means you are not getting the best from your riding experience. You could be a window cleaner, with constant neck ache, a carpet fitter with knee and other related problems, a painter/decorator, a builder, labourer. Whatever you do for a living or for fun, even if you are a keen and positive housewife and mother of boisterous and beautiful little ones, those aches and pains from fatigue and repetitive strain, threaten to hold you back, slow down your step, possibly heighten your emotions, challenge your coping mechanisms and maybe even threaten your livelihood. Whoever you are, whatever you do, if life feels like it’s a pain, have you ever considered what you can do to alleviate that pain & in some cases make it go away? If you are overweight you might try exercising or eating less, to see if that helps your condition and luckily in some people it does. However, what if it’s not the weight on your joints which are the problem, what if it’s the emotional trauma, you can't seem to get a handle on, what if you need is the gentle support of a listening ear, or the touch of wise hands that hear the moan of your overworked muscles & strained tendons. What if you could go about your everyday life, and you discovered that maybe you didn't have to do it in pain, physical or otherwise. What would that mean to you? To some it means 'freedom', an improved quality of life. It means nights sleeping and days living to the full. For those of us who are relatively healthy and haven't arrived at

20

a place of despair, we might not understand what this short article is trying to say. Unfortunately, some of you out there will understand too well. Touch of Healing is a healthcare provider, based in West Pinchbeck near Spalding coming to your area offering therapies in the comfort of your own home and in Stanground. If the contents of this article interest you and you would like to know more, email shehnaz@touchofhealing.co.uk or call 01775 640788 / 07710 756 771 and ask to speak to Shehnaz. You could log into www.touchofhealing.co.uk for information on treatments available at Touch of Healing.

In the meantime here are 5 ways which can help improve pain conditions. Eat Sensibly: Good Nutrition with essential vitamins and minerals are an important fuel for everyday healthy body mechanisms. Exercise for up to 30 minutes a day: A brisk daily walk is as good for the average person as is an exhausting hour at your local gym. Practice yoga regularly: Although DVD's and books are good, there is no substitute for precise instruction. There is a yoga group currently running at St Michaels Church. Email shehnaz@touchofhealing.co.uk for further information. Meditation: Learn to take command of the way you think. A healthy mind translates into a healthy body. Get regular bodywork: There is no substitute for the benefit of therapeutic, precise touch, either through massage or manipulation to align the body and relax its tension and strain. Your car needs a regular service to maintain its functioning ability. Though your body isn't a machine, it ages, it becomes overworked and if you want it to function at optimum condition, there is no better remedial method than the healing touch. If you are on Facebook, click the ‘like’ icon for www.TouchOfHealing.co.uk and receive updates on special offers coming up throughout the year on your news feed.

Gardening

I

f you want your garden full of colour, interest, perfume & perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive? Start with a little selfrestraint. It’s all too easy to buy enough seed to fill a tennis court when you have an average-sized garden. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself. Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. This will not only save you money, but will also maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay. Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise flower time of annual flowers & cropping time for vegetables & herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for

32

germination on one occasion, all is not lost. You may not need to buy what you want. Collect seed from your garden or from gardens of friends and neighbours, making sure that the plants are healthy and that they’re ready and ripe or they won’t germinate. Seeds labelled as ‘F1’ will produce flowers whose seeds will not ‘come true’, meaning that the offspring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. Try to harvest the seed when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris and allow them to dry off naturally, not becoming too warm or cold. If you can’t sow the seeds immediately, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place. A small heated or even un-heated propagator can help you reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. Choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UK-made Stewart propagators at

www.pippagreenwood.com. Seeds do best if not sown too closely & by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Wider spacing makes for less thinning out but if you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if looked after properly. Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. I ndeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil. Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings, and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be flowering later this year too. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email each week telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy Nemaslug and other garden products.

- http://twitter.com/ ProLawnCareUK - http://www.facebook.com/ ProLawnCareUK

Moss Moss has been a real threat to lawns this year, and may be affecting your lawn. Apply a specific moss treatment now, or get ProLawnCare to spray with their special Moss Control Treatment. Moss dies in front of your eyes, and it is best to do it now before the Spring starts, otherwise it will crowd out the grass and lead to a thin and sparse lawn.

Mowing Mow at last once a week now; make sure mower has been serviced and blade replaced or sharpened.

Fertiliser This is the time to feed and weed (preferably in that order). The fertiliser is predominately Nitrogen in a slow release form, but it may also need Phosphate and Potassium as well as vital trace elements to promote a vibrant lawn.

Weed Control Once the weeds and grass are actively growing a selective herbicide to kill broad leaved weeds such as dandelions, daisies and clover within the grass can be applied. 34

Ask the Lawn Ranger for advice (we promise he will reply within 24 hours)

Pet Vaccinations The Why, What & How Often Explained

T

he diseases Vets vaccinate pets against are generally very difficult, if not impossible, to treat successfully if contracted. But how easy is it for our furry family members to contract one of these diseases? You might think they’d have to come into contact with an already sick animal, and like me, you’d be wrong. Whilst an unvaccinated animal can spread infection directly to another it is unlikely that as an owner you would allow your healthy pet to have contact with such an infected animal. It is therefore far more likely for pets to contract these diseases indirectly from the environments they frequent, or from carrier species. For example: Contact with standing water contaminated with rat urine can be enough to transmit Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) or Distemper to dogs. Parvovirus can remain on pavements for as long as two years come rain, shine or snow. Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) can be transmitted to rabbits

40

from contaminated bedding or food, and Myxomatosis via biting insects. Vaccinating against diseases are therefore the best way to protect pets from these horrible diseases. So that was the why, below is the what and how often: What diseases do Vets currently routinely vaccinate dogs against? ♦ Adenovirus ♦ Distemper ♦ Infectious Canine Hepatitis ♦ Parvovirus ♦ Parainfluenza ♦ Leptospirosis The above can all be vaccinated against in one go, after an initial two injection course this vaccination must then be topped up by a booster injection every year to provide adequate levels of the vaccine to fight against infection. ...What about cats? ♦ Cat Flu ♦ Feline Panleukopaenia (Feline Enteritis) ♦ Feline Leukaemia Virus Cat Flu and Enteritis can be vaccinated against in one injection, whilst Leukaemia vaccinations are done in addition to this but can be done at the same time.

After an initial two-injection course both vaccinations require booster injections every year just like vaccinated dogs do. ...And rabbits? ♦ Myxomatosis ♦ Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) Nowadays these are administered together in one injection and which needs to be repeated annually. Are there any non routine disease to consider vaccinating against? ♦ Kennel Cough is usually only vaccinated against if dogs are being kennelled or deemed at a high risk. ♦ Both cats and dogs are required to be vaccinated against Rabies if going abroad under DEFRA’s Pet Travel Scheme. Beware, animals without all the right paperwork won’t be allowed back into the UK without six months quarantine!

For March 2013 - By Astrologer Christine Chalklin PISCES FEB. 19 – MARCH 20

VIRGO AUG. 24 - SEPT. 22

Happy birthday Pisces! Five planets are in your sign and may well mean that this is your best month ever. Prepare your creative insights and focus on your goals and ambitions. Mars leaves your sign on the 12th, but produces boundless energy in fiery Aries. The powerful new moon in your sign on the 11th brings clarity and focus to many areas of your life.

March brings your undivided attention to your personal relationships. With your ruler Mercury and four other planets in Pisces, you’ll examine your feelings and beliefs. It’s important to consider what may no longer be working for you, take a deep breath and have the courage to change things.

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 March is a very introspective month for usually extrovert and passionate Aries. Always ready to get up and go, this month you will have to step back, take stock and reflect. You will feel the energy shift as Mars, your ruling planet, moves into your sign on the 12th, bringing an abundance of creative energy.

TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 March brings a new kind of energy for Taurus. Soft and gentle Venus, your ruling planet, is in dreamy Pisces until the 22nd. Well placed for love and compassion, particularly within your social circle, meaningful friendships are on the horizon. The full moon in Libra on the 27th brings a new opportunity.

GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 March begins with no less than five planets in the most prominent position of your chart. Career expansion on all levels is possible now as your goals and ambitions continue to be favoured. Creativity is in the spotlight; let your imagination run wild as this should be a month to be remembered!

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 March brings you a new kind soft and gentle energy, your heart is open and you may be ready to broaden your horizons. The new moon on the 11th is pivotal, and you should also feel a restored sense of courage and confidence at the Spring Equinox on the 20th as the Sun energises your career sector.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 This month puts a big focus on all your financial dealings, legacies and resources. A review may well be necessary now. Motivational Mars leaps into fiery Aries on the 12th and coupled with the new moon, things could begin to turn around now. Be creative and use your imagination for a new project.

48

LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 March highlights your work, your health and all your daily routines. Five planets in Pisces challenge you to tune in and examine these areas. As your career expands, you’ll want to be sure that you work in the most rewarding way possible. Venus moving to Aries on the 22nd brings new and exciting ideas.

SCORPIO OCT. 24 - NOV. 22 March brings a dramatic shift to your personal energy as creative & innovative ideas are there to be grabbed. Your self-esteem should be an all time high and you’ll find the courage to take risks in areas you wouldn’t normally consider. Mars moves to Aries on the 12th and brings new opportunities your way.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21 This month turns your attention to your home and family. The concentrated energy of five planets in your domestic area leaves you no choice. This is a great time for extending and improving your accommodation. As Mars moves into passionate Aries on the 12th, your love life gathers momentum!

CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 Reassessing your life and career goals is most important now. With five planets in the communication and learning sector of your chart, you’ll be moved to broaden your intellectual horizons. Energetic Mars in Aries gains speed in the domestic area of your chart after the 12th and it’s time for some home improvements!

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18 March turns the spotlight on financial arrangements and you may well be looking at new creative ways to expand your income. It’s all change as fiery Mars moves into energetic Aries on the 12th, your confidence improves and you really do begin to put your beliefs and your values into action.
