Team "Safe Local Trades" raise over £4k for Age UK Peterborough!

Each October, Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades organise fund-raising events for their chosen charity Age UK Peterborough. Last year there were two events - the Great Eastern Fun Run on 14th October & a Firewalk on 18th October. Both events were an overall success and the organiser, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said “we would like to thank all our runners and firewalkers for taking part in helping to raise £4,185 for this very worthy cause, and to everyone who supported us by donating to our teams." Nineteen brave people hot-footed it across red hot coals of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. "It was an amazing and exhilarating experience for everyone", said Eileen, "following the preliminary seminar, you couldn't hold anyone back, we were all on such a positive high!" David Bache, CEO of Age UK Peterborough, who also took part in the Great Eastern Fun Run, said “we are once again thrilled with the amount of money that these great volunteers have raised for our charity. Without such generosity we would find it really difficult to continue supporting older people in our communities. My thanks go to all the people who took part in the events, all those who sponsored them, and of course, Eileen Le Voi of Safe Local Trades, who did a wonderful job in organising us all".

t is vitally important that you keep your bike well maintained to ensure it performs as it should, is a pleasure to ride and will last for years to come. Whether you intend riding through the winter months or put your bike away in the garage or shed for the winter, now is a good time to have it checked over. If you get the bike looked at before putting it into storage, then when you come to start cycling again in the spring, there'll be no nasty surprises.

12

Here at Bristows we offer reasonably priced basic and full bicycle servicing as well as general cycle repairs, gear tuning, brake adjustments, wheel truing, puncture repairs and more. As a special offer for the months of January/February we are offering £5 off our basic service (£40) and £10 off our full service (£80) (excluding parts). Gardening

Wrap Up For Winter Winter is upon us and even if you think that it can’t become any colder, the lowest temperatures are likely yet to come. Even hardy British plants will suffer in particularly miserable weather so whether your garden is already covered in snow and ice, or simply a slight frosting, it’s time to make sure that it’s wrapped up warm. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to winter damage as their roots are not protected beneath the soil. If the garden soil isn’t frozen solid, plunge any pot that can be plunged. If it’s too heavy to move then wrap it up well in bubble wrap polythene or old curtains. Most shrubs & trees in your garden will be ‘hardy’ in the UK, but if very harsh weather is forecast or there has been a spell of mild weather which may have encouraged the plant to produce some soft, new growth, then drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants & anchor it well. A double fleece layer can of course be used on plants in beds and borders too. Weigh down the edges of the fleece well with bricks, or use metal pegs at intervals along its length. Larger individual plants in borders can be given good, individual protection if you use four sturdy canes to create a framework, wrap with netting or chicken wire and fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Many wall shrubs are grown there because they aren’t the hardiest of plants. To reduce risk of damage, make a similar ‘cage’ of mesh around these and again fill it with dry material so that the plant inside remains snug. Make sure you don’t use materials that can’t ‘breathe’ or the plants will deteriorate. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth. Deep mulch applied to the soil surface on the root area before the

16

By Pippa Greenwood ground becomes frosted will help immensely. Even hardy fruit trees are prone to damage. Although quite tough, the newly opened blossom and the buds themselves may be damaged, with late frosts being most harmful because the buds are further developed. A fleece cover will help here too. If you live in a particularly cold area, buy them from a local specialist nursery who know local conditions and try to buy late flowering varieties. If your garden is windy, try investing in some fleecy jackets for your favourite shrubs. These are made from fleece and are like massive bags, complete with a drawstring at the open end. Alternatively use a double layer of ordinary fleece, wrap it around and cut to size before clipping or tying in place. Outdoor taps and pipework will need protection too or could result in burst pipes and expensive bills. I suggest turning outside taps off at the mains, but if this isn’t feasible, make sure any exposed pipework is properly insulated. Your local builder’s merchant or DIY store is worth a visit for this job - well insulated pipes and garden taps could save you a fortune. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com for some great gift ideas and items for your garden, including signed copies of Pippa’s books, handmade terracotta herb planters and wall plaques, cloches, pop-up plant cloches, raised bed kits, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Cards, heated propagators and lots more! You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free e-book on organic gardening.

Beyond the Classroom

S

chool is about much more than just gaining qualifications - it is also about developing young people into responsible young adults ready to meet the demands of the future. Nene Park Academy is committed to providing all students with opportunities and experiences which develop self-confidence, life-skills and leadership experiences. This allround approach to education results in a more mature approach to learning, the classroom and the work place. Nene Park Academy, based in Orton Longueville, has developed and invested in a simple but broad set of Academy Pledges that students are expected to complete during the course of their time at school. The Pledges respond to a range of activities that Nene Park Academy believes students should experience in order to develop the skills and confidence to complement their academic achievements. The Pledges are; Participation, Leadership, Excellence, Diversity, Giving, Environment and Service. The Academy runs a variety of extracurricular clubs and activities, known as Session 6 activities, to support the programme. It wants, and expects, all of its students to participate in at least one after-school club as part of the ‘Pledges Programme’ so that they can benefit from the skills and personal qualities that these clubs help to develop. This reflects the school’s commitment to providing the very best for its students and reinforces the philosophy of achievement for all. A recent example of how the Pledges Programme helped to ‘develop the individual’ was when a group of Nene Park Academy’s Post-16 students took to the catwalk to raise money towards their World Challenge expedition to Peru next summer & showcase local designer clothing ranges. A range of local designer boutiques,

such as Honey Dog Clothing, Chic Boutique, The Glass Slipper and Amanda’s Tutus, were displayed on the evening with independent jewellery stalls. Year 13 student Amy Raffray, who helped to organise the event said “The World Challenge programme offers students once in a lifetime personal development opportunities. “The fashion show was such good fun, but it was incredibly nerve-wracking getting up on the catwalk with everyone staring at you. However, the expedition will push us beyond our comfort zone, so we had to do something similar to raise money for the trip as well.” Year 13 student Jon Beasley added “I know that I will gain so much from my World Challenge experience and I am really looking forward to it. It will be hard work, but it will also be so rewarding - not just for us but also for the locals. The main purpose of our expedition is to help on a community regeneration project.” Matt Smith, Teacher and World Challenge Coordinator commented, “There was such a wonderful atmosphere and everyone really enjoyed themselves. In fact, the evening was so successful that we are planning to host another one in the spring, which will be the perfect opportunity for students to start thinking about their prom gowns!” The evening raised over £200 for the World Challenge expedition with other events planned over the course of the next 8 months to raise even more money for this cause. Other examples of some of the many other Session 6 activities that take place at the school are ‘Let’s Get Cooking’, Military Style Self Defence, Music Ensemble, Watersports at Lakeside Leisure, Photography Club, Archery Club, Hockey & Netball, to name but a few. A complete list of activities and more information about the Academy’s Pledges Programme can be found on the school’s website: www.neneparkacademy.org.

B

ut how do you decide on a suitable exercise regime to help you lose weight and regain vitality? Working out at home with the help of a video console has become a popular alternative to going out to a dance class or a gym. The great advantage is that it allows you to design a programme to suit your own needs and preferences.

By Claudia Leaf

However if - like me - you’re not a great self-motivator, you may find it hard to keep going without a human instructor to give encouragement. After several attempts to follow an aerobic routine in my lounge I made the decision to join a regular exercise class. A quick browse round the websites of local clubs brings up an array of exercise styles with exotic-sounding names such as Zumba, Pilates, Ashtanga Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi. It’s nice to be spoiled for choice, but there are a few things to consider before you start. How old are you? Do y o u ha v e a n y m e d i ca l conditions? How much exercise do you normally take? If a leisurely stroll round the supermarket is your main form of exercise then a cardiovascular workout is probably not the place to start. You need to build your programme slowly, so you could begin with a beginners’ yoga class where you will be concentrating on breathing and stretching. If you are new to structured exercise you will be glad to know that yoga is about doing as much as you feel your own body can manage. Its emphasis on slow movements, posture and deep breathing really helps to build muscular strength and improve balance.

36

There are a variety of different kinds of yoga, some of w hi ch a re re a l l y q u i te challenging for a beginner, so do have a chat with the instructor before booking your course. Pilates borrows heavily from yoga and was originally devised to help injured dancers and athletes. Once again there is an emphasis on good posture and exercises are designed to strengthen the spine, improve circulation and open up the joints. As with Yoga you can look forward to a fantastic sense of release & revitalisation at the end of each class. A fitness programme that is currently enjoying huge success in this country is Zumba. Invented by Columbian choreographer Alberto Perez in the 1990s, Zumba combines exercise with dance. Unlike conventional dance classes where the instructor faces the class and teaches a series of steps, Zumba is a continuous series of free-flowing moves – the instructor stands with his or her back to the class, demonstrating actions for the students to follow. If you enjoy dancing to music then this is probably a good choice, but do think twice if your movement is restricted or if you suffer from high blood pressure. However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. After a few weeks you’ll be surprised to find how much better you feel, both physically and mentally. It may take a few attempts before you find a class that suits you, but it will be worth it in the end. Make sure the New Year really does mean a new you.

For January 2013 - By Astrologer Christine Chalklin CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 January brings some introspective times for ambitious Capricorns. Mercury in your sign encourages more soul searching, but with the exciting possibility of extended insight and new vision for 2013. The new moon on the 11th brings a new sense of confidence as career opportunities come your way.

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 Relationships & love affairs are important issues for Cancerians this month. Transformational changes are in the air and some deep introspection will be necessary. The new moon on the 11th brings dynamic energy and you can make constructive decisions that will certainly benefit your year ahead.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23

January sees lots of change for Aquarians as motivational Mars charges through your sign. Harmonious Venus, the love planet, moves to the most introspective area of your chart. With your ruler, the unpredictable Uranus making waves in the communication department, you may be surprised at what you agree to!

The Capricorn new moon that sets the tone for the New Year on the 11th, kicks off a transformational time for ambitious Leos. All areas of your working life will need a review now as you prepare for a new productive phase in your life. Things begin to fall into place after the full moon on the 27th.

PISCES FEB. 19 – MARCH 20

VIRGO AUG. 24 - SEPT. 22

The New Year begins with exciting new opportunities on the horizon in many areas of your life. Career, home and finances are all in focus and you may find it hard to keep up with so much dynamic energy. Things become much clearer after the new moon on the 11th, it’s time to state what you want!

January brings love, romance, friends and your social life into focus. Your ruler in practical Capricorn ensures that you divide your time wisely so that you can find a good balance. With Saturn now in the communication sector of your chart, an in-depth review of how you get your message across is due.

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 January is an energetic month & highlights broadening your horizons & communicating on a much grander scale. Motivational Mars, your ruler, continues the energetic theme and travelling through innovative Aquarius, sets the scene for new and exciting encounters and dynamic networking.

TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 Jupiter in Gemini making excellent links with Mars in Aquarius, and encourages you to broaden your horizons, open your mind and look at things you may have held on the back burner. Venus, your ruling planet, moves to ambitious Capricorn on the 9th encouraging and inviting you to take up this new pace.

GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 The New Year begins with Mercury, your ruler, switching from practical Capricorn to innovative Aquarius on the 19th. How can you plan your year ahead maximising your talents and your potential? The monetary area of your chart is also emphasised and rearranging certain finances may be necessary.

LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 Domestic and family matters are in the spotlight for the first half of January and normally indecisive Libra may have to make some important decisions on the home front. Harmonious Venus, your ruler, is in optimistic & expansive Sagittarius, you’ll be looking at things with much broader vision than in the past.

SCORPIO OCT. 24 - NOV. 22 The New Year begins with some restless energy as energetic Mars in Aquarius stirs up the domestic sector of your chart. Ideas and communications are also highlighted, particularly at the new moon on the 11th. Make sure you use this productive cycle for planning and following up with decisive action.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21 January starts on a serious note as Mercury, the Sun and transformational Pluto all transit the monetary sector of your chart. A big review is necessary, but with abundant Jupiter in your opposite sign you are on target to find new and exciting ways of using all your potential and increasing finances.
