Welcome to The November edition of ‘The Hampton Viewer’ It’s that time of year again, when the nights are long and cold and we all love to sit by the fire with a hot cuppa. Now that Christmas is nearly here it’s the time when we start planning for Christmas, and finding gifts can prove to be tricky - see pages 14/15 and also look out for the red bauble throughout the magazine for some great gift ideas. This month there is a charity event held in aid of Sue Ryder - “Beef and Beer Evening”. This will be held on Friday 16th November and will be an evening of fantastic food, drink and entertainment, see page 24 for the details. On the 17th November the Christmas lights are switched on at Cathedral Square, this is a brilliant way of marking the beginning of the festivities. There are also many other events that you may find interesting throughout November and December - please go to page 36. Finally, don’t forget, if you have any community/charity events that are happening in your area that may be of interest to your neighbours, please send the details to the email address below. Until next time, happy shopping!

The Whinge Doctor, Doctor ...

U

sually when I return from holiday I catch some obnoxious disease and spend the following few days with my body fighting between killing the virus & coming to terms with the prospect of having to return to my beloved workplace and my ever-cheerful colleagues with their sunny-disposition which sends my mind wandering back to hot sun-soaked beaches & cool margaritas with barbequed chicken and pineapple salsa… Sorry, just drifted off for a moment there. So, anyway, I think it’s the fact that I’m stuck for several hours in a thin metal tube with hundreds of others, all spreading their unwelcome pathogens throughout the plane via the air-conditioning system, that means my own delicate constitution becomes afflicted. To be fair, it’s usually just a bit of a cold or a minor sniffle that I end up with and it’s probably just because you tend to mix with new people on the plane and on holiday and therefore have a bigger chance of encountering different strains of common diseases. This time was a little different though. I caught what I thought was an ear infection but I was also having dizzy spells and occasional nausea and it had lasted for quite a few weeks. So off to the doctor I went, just to be sure. And sure enough Labyrinthitis was the diagnosis with a possible timeline of 3 to 4 months. However, pills were prescribed, not to cure the disease itself but to help reduce the dizziness and nauseous feelings. So straight round to the pharmacist to collect said prescription and to welcome back normalness. Once I’d collected the tablets I opened them and removed the information leaflet, mainly because I’d already forgot how many and when I should take them. But I was in for a shock. The leaflet went into several pages of possible side-effects. Crikey!

18

I thought I should read them, just in case. Firstly I need to ask if the person who was been speaking to my doctor to own up. These tablets were from a group of medicines known as “phenothiazine antipsychotics”. Whoa there, antipsychotics! I felt a bit dizzy and a little sick, I’m not psychotic! Obviously when the doc stuck that thing in my ear he saw more than I imagined. But wait, there’s more! Some of the possible side effects: unusually pale complexion, sweating, high temperature, fast heartbeat, stiff muscles, fast breathing, feeling confused, drowsy or agitated. Trembling or shaking, difficulty moving or loss of muscle power, changes in skin or eye colour (!), feeling dizzy (eh, tablets I’m taking to stop dizzy spells could make me feel dizzy – am I missing something). Skin being more sensitive to the sun than usual, insomnia (can’t say I’m surprised at that after reading the list of side effects), impotence (see insomnia) breast enlargement in men, abnormal production of breast milk in men and women… Hang on, did I just read that, “abnormal production of breast milk in MEN and women” what the heck is normal production of breast milk in men? My wife read this slightly differently. She now thinks I (and all men everywhere) have deliberately lied to all women since the beginning of time. She just said “If I’d have known that you could’ve taken your turn with the cracked and sore nipples”. There were a few other words in there but I’ve removed them in the name of good taste. This is just the highlights of the list and I came to the conclusion that this is definitely one situation where the cure may be worse than the disease. © 2012 Stephen Farringdon http://stephenfarringdon.com http://www.asf-photography.co.uk

BEAUTY

hether it’s a designer fragrance, a classic scent or an old favourite, there’s something about it that delights women of all ages.

own fragrances on offer, and many smell very similar to the untrained nose.

It may seem that you can’t go wrong with perfume, but have you ever stopped to think about what makes it so special?

This is because scents are categorised according to ‘notes’ - characteristics that define overall similarities. And we all, knowingly or unknowingly, tend to be drawn to a particular ‘fragrance family’.

We’ve all felt the impact that scent can have in our lives - a momentary waft of a familiar smell can instantly evoke memories of a certain person, time, place or a stage in your life. Our sense of smell is so compelling that it allows us to unlock forgotten moments stored away deep within our minds in an instant. Indeed fragrance seems to have a magical ability to affect our mood - lifting our spirits, making us feel good about ourselves, as well as happy and contented. It also defines people - we remember their fragrance long after we’ve forgotten their clothes, or even their looks. This is why it’s so important to find a fragrance that you love, and to make it your own signature scent. There are thousands of perfumes on the market nowadays - fashion brands, designers and even celebrities have their

26

But, we all seem to instantly know what we like, and what we don’t.

Fresh - Scents described as ‘Fresh’ often contain a blend of ‘green’ notes that are evocative of things like spring-time, citrus fruits and freshly-cut grass. The overall scent is light, clean and refreshing. Floral - Encompassing a multitude of aromas taken from flowers, this family’s fragrance is totally floral. With inspiration drawn from the scent of a single bloom, or a vast bouquet, ‘Floral’ fragrances can contain notes of rose, lily of the valley, jasmine, cherry blossom, honey flower, violets and many more. These fragrances can be sweet or powdery. Oriental - Extravagantly exotic, ‘Oriental’ scents are often formed with notes of amber and vanilla. Known for their sensual fragrance, Orientals tend to be ‘heavier’ than other groups and are altogether more powerful fragrances.

Chypre (or Woods) - Inspired by the ‘woody’ fragrance of oak, sandlewood, cedarwood and moss, this family is heavily aromatic and masculine - many of these notes are used in men’s fragrance. Patchouli, vetiver and pine lift the woody notes, for a crisp scent. Of course, perfumes are incredibly personal and what one person loves, another one loathes. It’s a great feeling to find your signature fragrance. And once you discover what elements make it perfect for you, you can buy a range of scents within that family that are different variations on the one you love. This means that your favourite fragrance can be adapted for various occasions, seasons or even for day and night. And remember, if there’s a very special event on the horizon for you - like your wedding day buy a brand new fragrance that you will forever associate with it. So, to leave a lasting impression, just find the scent that’s right for you.

In The Night Sky #20

T

his month is a firework spectacular or the stellar variety. But first a short quiz; in December the Geminids meteor shower radiate from the constellation Gemini, in August the Perseids radiate from the constellation Persius, in November the Leonids and the Taurids meteor showers both peak but from what constellations. Sometimes astronomers lack imagination when naming objects in the night sky. But sometimes this can make things easier to find. Look for the Taurids on bonfire night and the Leonids on the evening of the 17th, which is a Saturday so you can stay up and recover on Sunday. Other highlights for this month are a total solar eclipse at 10pm – unfortunately we won’t see it in the UK but they will in Australia, but that seems a long way to go. Unfortunately we’re also on the wrong side for the penumbral eclipse of the Moon at 3pm on the afternoon of the 28th. This is the map of the night sky at 0400 on the 17th looking east-southeast, showing Leo and with the radiant of the Leonids also shown.
