ITV’s top comedy of all time, RISING DAMP, comes to the Grand Theatre stage from Monday 30 September to Saturday 5 October in a brand-new production from the Comedy Theatre Company, producers of the stage versions of Victoria Wood’s Dinnerladies and BBC TV’s Birds of A Feather. An unnamed northern university town is home to Rupert Rigsby, landlord of arguably the seediest, most run-down boarding house that England has to offer. His unlucky tenants include Ruth Jones, an administrator at the university; Alan, a medical student; and Philip, who is studying town and country planning.

Between them, Alan and Philip are the focus and foil of the majority of Rigsby’s many prejudices, usually at the expense of his dignity and standing in the eyes of Miss Jones, with whom he is hopelessly and pathetically in love. “The stage version of ITV’s best and certainlymost highly respected sitcom to date, RISING DAMP shines as a masterwork and is a realhighlight. Writer Eric Chappell’s fabulous dialogue sparkles to this day...a fantastic night all round” - British Comedy Guide Call the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre Box Office for more information on 01902 42 92 12.

This month we have teamed up with The Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton to bring you an exciting competition! We are offering you the chance to win tickets to see the show RISING DAMP! An exciting recent business acquisition has meant that one local plumbing and heating engineer has expanded his presence across the region. Pete Long of Aquajoin Ltd has taken on Mick French’s successful plumbing and heating business, and is determined to ensure customers continue to receive the high levels of service they’ve come to expect. “Mick’s business has grown from strength to strength over the last 12 years looking after local Staffordshire residents for their annual boiler and fire servicing and breakdowns” Pete explained, “and I’m committed to continue to take good care of his valued customers – past and present – in the same way”. Customers will be able to benefit from additional services too though, with Pete a registered gas safe engineer. “I carry out landlords’ gas safety certificates for private landlords and am really proud of the great relationship I’ve developed with many of the local letting agents and their own landlords. I’m also able to install or upgrade new boilers and heating systems and have a number of local suppliers making my prices very competitive” he added. In addition to carrying out boiler and fire servicing and breakdowns, and landlords’ gas safety certificates, Pete can also offer all aspects of plumbing services ranging from fixing a leaking tap to full bathroom suites or shower adaptations. He can also advise on the dangers of carbon monoxide and install a carbon monoxide detector for your safety or the safety of your tenants if you are a landlord. For further information, contact Pete on 01785 664344 or 07905 902609.

I opted for the latter as I sat down with my partner in the modern and spacious dining room. The atmosphere was bright and relaxed and the menu boasted a wide choice from the classic… We received a warm and friendly welcome from our server who was attentive and efficient throughout the evening. I opted for a glass of house rose priced at £4.10 whilst my partner had lager which was also reasonably priced. To start we decided to have bread and oils and the pate, both were well received and I would recommend them- although there were a number of starters that tempted us. If you’re looking to venture out for good pub grub at a reasonable price, then you won’t be disappointed by the Bridgehouse in Penkridge.

And so to the mains, I went for a spaghetti bolognese which was accompanied with garlic bread. I was also presented with grated cheese to add my rather indulgent sized meal.

It offers a great example of balance- it’s large, yet still quite intimate, busy yet the food looks and tastes although care and attention has been paid, as well as high quality, yet fairly cheap- especially if you go for one of the special menus they frequently offer.

My partner went for the enviable choice of the duck- I can vouch that this was an equally good choice as I was permitted a taste… after a bit persuasion.

The old ‘Tudoresque’ building is the perfect setting for dining with the girls, or lads for that matter, a family get together or a romantic meal.

There are no pretentious portions to be found at the Bridge. I can safely say we were both adequately full by this point but not to be out done, we opted for a look at the desert menu. The deserts proved to be too tempting so we decided upon a Belgium waffle and a

blueberry crème brulee. After thinking I was too full for desert, I realised I was hugely mistaken as the crème brulee went down a treat. It really was delicious and priced at just £3.95, I justified it to myself as a bargain! Once finishing our meal we retired to the lounge where we were presented with a range of coffees, teas and hot chocolate. This relaxing end to the meal topped it off perfectly and I would definitely recommend it as a Penkridge dining hotspot.

For those interested in more than just the a la carte offerings, the Bridgehouse also offers two meals for £10 at lunch times, a Sunday carvery and Planty’s fish and chip night every last Thursday of the month. The beer garden has also been refurbished- just in time for some summer sun. As well as this, the Bridge’s summer menu is being launched this month to tantalise your taste buds, whilst soaking up the rays in the beer garden. By Rosamond Evans

Walton Go Green and get national Eco-award! June saw the Green Schools Revolution campaign awarding Walton with £1000 for their green thinking initiatives. 6000 schools nationwide were involved showcasing work achieved. Walton was the only secondary school in the region to win and share the £18,000 prize fund. Judges were impressed with the fruit and veg grown within school, composting food waste, creating a wildflower meadow and educating children to live more sustainably. The prize money will be spent extending the school’s orchard and setting up an annual vegetable growing competition. Simon Plunkett, Regional Secretary for the Co-operative in the North West and North Midlands who run the competition said, “We had some very strong entries, so Walton High School should be very proud of the work it is doing and I hope by winning this competition it can take its eco plans to the next level. The school is a shining example of sustainability in action that will no doubt inspire others”.

India The Golden Temple of Amritsar By Solange Hando Sparkling gold leaf, glistening water, cloisters, domes and shrines, the Golden Temple is as stunning as the Taj Mahal but it is no mere mausoleum. Set in Amritsar, in north-west India, ‘Harmandir Sahib’ is a living place, beautifully mirrored in a sacred lake, a once in a lifetime pilgrimage for most Sikhs though everyone is welcome, regardless of creed. Step through the gate and the temple takes your breath away, rising at the far end of a marble pathway followed by myriads of pilgrims from dawn to dusk. Women in colourful saris, gurus in bright blue turbans, young men with orange headscarves symbolising the Sikh flag, barefoot visitors, it’s a hive of activity yet an oasis of peace at the heart of town, just a few miles from the Pakistan border. Some meditate at the water’s edge, others sprinkle rose petals around the holy trees, men take a ritual bath in the designated area, holding on to dangling chains for safety. Then all make their way along the causeway to the inner sanctum, quietly joining the queues clutching prayer books. Beyond the silver gates, the holy

scriptures are read aloud throughout the day before being returned ceremoniously at night to the safety of the Akal Takhat. Holy men had gathered on this spot long before Guru Nanak founded Sikhism around 1499 but Amritsar, the ‘pool of nectar’ which gave the town its name, was later extended and a temple was built on land donated by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar. Centuries later, the upper floors were covered in gold leaf by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the ‘Lion of Punjab’ and founder of the Sikh Empire.

When the sun sets, the Golden Temple comes into its own But despite a troubled past at times, Sikhism remains true to the gurus’ teachings, a way of life based on worship, equality between all human beings and volunteering in the service of others, three principles which shine in Amritsar as brightly as the dazzling layers of gold leaf. Here, in the world’s largest communal kitchen, up to 100,000 visitors a day receive free meals prepared by volunteers. Chopping,

cooking, serving or cleaning, everyone can help, though there is no pressure, and in the dining hall, people of all castes, men, women and children, sit together to eat in silence. Beggar or Head of State, all are equal and even the great Akbar pushed aside the rich rugs laid out for him to sit on the floor like everyone else. Food is donated and volunteers may be visitors or locals happy to give a few hours of their time, the latter often on a daily basis. Outside, the midday sun blazes down on the steps, the shrines, the lake, a flock of parakeets screeches high up in the sky while half way along the path, volunteers hand out cold water to the never ending flow of pilgrims. Many come to celebrate a special occasion, birthday, wedding or the birth of a child, hoping for auspicious times, but festivals draw the largest crowds, be it a Guru’s birthday, Diwali or the anniversary of the Holy Book. There are prayers and prostrations, tinsel garlands and marigolds and when the sun sets, the Golden Temple comes into its own, garlanded in festive lights, resplendent in the moonlight.
