A LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP What a strange year it has been. What is – at once – one of our most successful years ever, is also one of our most perilous. With tremendous growth and success over the last several years, having to close our doors due to COVID-19 set the stage for a large financial hit totaling more than $1.6m. Most of this financial impact won’t become obvious until 2021, when 11.5 months of the fiscal year will have passed without a regularly scheduled public performance. Even so, The Naples Players is leading the way in building back our community through the arts. Our innovative and immediate programmatic response was heralded across the region – with Gulfshore Life Magazine calling us the “defender of the arts,” while our outdoor cultural events season proved to be ahead of the curve. I’m proud of the Naples community for coming together to save the arts; and I’m proud that we’re at the forefront of the movement. As you’ll see in this report, there is a lot to celebrate even as the need for donations remains significant. Thank you for your ongoing support,

BRYCE ALEXANDER Executive Artistic Director

OUR MISSION: The Naples Players continually seeks to enrich, educate, and entertain our community through a superior theatre experience. We are a premier community theatre, seeking to inspire passion for the performing arts through unparalleled access to the process, experience, and conversations surrounding the arts and our community.

Despite being cut off in the middle of our season by the global pandemic of COVID-19, our 66th year was on track to be our highest attended season in our history – with a record number of season ticket holders, individual ticket holders, and partnerships.

Now, we come together with a single, shared goal: to save the arts.

Our Volunteer Even in the face of the enormous challenges presented by COVID-19, our volunteers continued to serve as the backbone of our community. From writing thank you notes to our donors, to ushering at outdoor productions, our volunteers worked more hours in 2020 than 2019, even with canceled productions.

A CONVERSATION WITH:

TNP VOLUNTEER HILDEGARD CARNEY What do you enjoy most about being a TNP volunteer? It is very gratifying to see when the people come in and they “enjoy the show. It gives you a kind of satisfaction. And I like the staff around here. I like the people. It’s like a big family. They’re very supportive. And the atmosphere is wonderful.

What do you miss most about being involved at TNP during this difficult year? When you come here it gives you a sense of “belonging. Especially now. When I first started here, when I was an usher, I didn’t know too many people. I mean everybody was a stranger to me. But then when I became involved I got to know more people. I got to know some of the Players and that really made a difference because then you really begin to feel like you belong there. Once we are open, I hope the patrons will all come back… and that they really enjoy being together again with all the people they have known. It was such a pleasure when we had a show going, the people come in, they were standing here and they’re talking, you know, and it really is great - and I really have missed it.

What is it like performing at this time with the challenges of COVID and its effect on the arts?

I am starting to figure out what colleges I want to go to and what I want to study. It’s really hard to imagine that what I want to go to school for - musical theatre - may not exist anymore! Your parents always tell you to go for your dreams and work hard at it, and to imagine that something like this (COVID-19) could take it all away is really hard.

It’s a relief. Honestly. The stress that the situation of the “world right now has been putting everyone in, this really gives me an escape to come and have fun and get back to what I love doing. It’s amazing!

How has TNP helped shape your passion for the arts? Once I did my first show I realized this is something I am “really passionate about. Every time I entered the building

TNP COVID-19 ADVISORY COUNCIL This year, TNP led the region’s arts organizations through the formation of a new COVID-19 Advisory Council. The council is comprised of healthcare professionals, industry professionals, and community leaders to help make informed decisions about the safest and most responsible ways to move forward. To ensure all artists in our region can benefit from our efforts, we are sharing the feedback and consensus from the committee with our colleagues in organizations across the region. We’re grateful that each of these individuals has agreed to bring their own unique perspective to help us make informed and prudent decisions about our programs, and about the future of the arts.
