A broadly inclusive view at the public perception of heavy metal and its fans which, although limited to mainstream music, captures the unstable origins of modern metal, this book provides a solid foundation for Weinstein's comments on metal.

'Swedish Death Metal' -Daniel Ekeroth

If you want to know the history of Swedish death metal from those who lived it, Swedish Death Metal is a mandatory read. It was written by Daniel Ekeroth, a Swedish musician who is in Insision and Tyrant. He experienced the birth and growth of Swedish death metal, first as a fan and then as a musician. Ekeroth has interviewed most of those who were there at the beginning of Swedish death metal's birth, and their perspective and memories are invaluable. MAY 2010 THE INFORMER page 16

We make the music. You tell us what genre we are.......because we aren’t even sure ourselves… Can you explain the name Seraphic Nihilist? Why did you go with that name?

Metal Head Guys Smell Extremely Weird If you’re suicidal and are looking for a quick way to end it all, I recommend running up to the nearest heavy metal guy and burying your head under his sweatiest looking armpit. Within 5 seconds you’ll be out for the count, never to return to consciousness. Heavy metal guys smell so weird simply because they refuse to wash. Most of them think only ‘queers’ are interested in hygeine. There are some who will take an occasional bath if encouraged enough. However he will continue to stink even after showering due to the fact that he is tremendously overweight and is therefore sweating like a whore. All True Metal Fans Are Socially Retarded. Much like their mopey cousins, the Goths, Metal-heads hate daylight and are rarely seen during normal waking hours. The average metaller will spend most of his life upstairs in his parents home listening to Black Sabbath LP’s at full volume whilst jumping up and down on the floorboards like a maniac as dollops of plasterboard rain down into the kitchen and into their mother’s cup of tea. Illiterate by nature, moshers typically only have a vocabulary ranging from between 100 and 500 words. This is why so many of them resort to violence as a primitive means of communication. If they were to have that their way, currency would be eliminated and replaced with a system where hefty slaps around the ass and metal band T-shirts are exchanged for food. for more idiotic content check out: http://metalheadguys.info/

What would you primarily describe your music as?

A seraphim is an order of archangel that brings the voice of god to the people, a nihilist is someone who believes in nothing, spiritual or moral. So basically “the voice of god is meaningless” is the literal translation but interpret it as you will. How long has Seraphic Nihilist been together? What inspired you to make music together?

Pretty much started in Will’s kitchen, essentially the product of complete fucking boredom.

Seraphic Nihilist is one of those bands that you see once and never forget. I’ve seen these guys play a couple times now and I can definitely describe their act as one of a kind. They are made up of: Dr. Bones - Drummer who sells dreams at west 49, The Ginger - Guitarist a self described sperm donor, Disney Bassist village idiot, Will Eulogy - Vocalist who also works as a carpenter, and Joshua Slaughter - Vocalist and brilliant bukkake Technician. They approach their act with a level of originality that I can honestly say is refreshing in a world full of mundane “myspace” bands. They are presently working on their first self produced demo as they get ready to hit the road this summer on a cross Canada tour. I was lucky enough to get a hold of Josh while they work feverishly on recording, jamming, and planning how to cook their bass player. The following is the result of that correspondence. I notice a strong grindcore element in your music; are there any other types of music inspiring your writing?

Everything aggressive! We are all a veritable grabbing of influences.

I think it’s cool that you guys went with two vocalists. What’s the main advantage to having two singers? One word: Range. Also: HARMONIZED VOCALS. And it just makes us smile on the inside. Stage makeup?

It’s kind of random. Pretty well whenever one of us feels like it. Tell us about the song “Everyone deserves to die”.

We used to write a lot of apocalyptic themed songs so that was how it started especially seeing it from a more pessimistic view. It’s one of those things that’s eerily true. So how’s the recording going? When do you hope to have it finished?

Recording has been pretty good. There have been a few setbacks with equipment and being too broke to fix it. But should be done soon. Aiming for the end of May. Any tour plans to support the new recording?

We’re touring across Canada with SWAMP MONSTER. Though

Denim Morrison page 15 THE INFORMER MAY 2010

MAY 2010 THE INFORMER page 4

by the time we get to Regina we’ve accepted the fact that we may have to eat our bass player. I noticed you’re doing your own recording, is this recording going to be your first demo? Technically our second though the first was never released to the public’s ears.

And you’re going to be offering recording services to other bands? Josh will be, the rest of us pretty well clueless on how it works. (Josh: just basic cheap demo recordings that are extremely better quality then sticking a mic in the middle of the room.) Who have you shared the stage with? Any local interior B.C. bands you want to play with that you haven‘t yet?

FINAL NAIL, OBIZUTH, GYIBAAW, HELLSMEN, AUTOINTOXICATION, EVE OF OSTARA (THE DECAYED), CONCEIVE AND DEVOUR, BLOODDRUNK, GRINDER, FALL IN ARCHAEA, DAMNED GRAVE, SKULLHAMMER, SARCOPHAGUS, VALE OF HINNOM, MORBID CURIOSITY, and would give Disney’s left nut to play with DEAD JESUS.

It’s pretty clear that you guys are working hard on this band; what’s the ultimate plan with Seraphic Nihilist? Rich and famous? Or, are you guys just looking for beer money…

If we could just get to the point where we don’t have to work day jobs at least for awhile, we’d be ducky with that. What do you think has been your biggest challenge as a Prince George band? Being a PG band ha-ha.

What’s the average Seraphic Nihilist jam session like? Do you guys find yourselves jamming lots?

Dog fucking sums it up pretty good, which is why we have to be so prolific with jamming. Where have you performed? P.G., Terrace and Kamloops.

Any advice for the kids who want to form their own bands?

Don’t be scared to do something different, if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing trying to make everyone happy there’s no point doing it. AND get a bass player... got to have someone to pick on. Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?

Without the guys in FINAL NAIL, OBIZUTH, HELLSMEN, and of course Ace for giving us either support or criticism, we’re not sure we would have made it past our first year. Oh and a big shoutout to out #1 most hardcore fan. Lockpants!!!!! Any last words?

FUCK THE ALLIANCE!!

by the time we get to Regina we’ve accepted the fact that we may have to eat our bass player.

WHAT FILM ABOUT A 30-YEAR-OLD UNHERALDED HEAVY-METAL BAND MAY JUST GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE AT FAME? 18. WHAT IS THE BEST SELLING HEAVY METAL BAND AT THE MOMENT?

Though
