the book shelf 'Heavy Metal: A Cultural Sociology' -Deena Weinstein A reasonable summary of most academic study so far, which indulges heavy metal as an extreme offshoot of rock in which rebellion is the prime goal and the fundamental ceremony is the concert. These failings aside, there is very perceptive research here on the origins of heavy metal and the personalities within its culture. The latter is most informative of all aspects in this book and is Weinstein's strength as a writer 'Goldmine Heavy Metal Price Guide' -Martin Popoff

For those who want to enter the intricate world of collecting, an experienced metal journalist outlines the significance and comparative value of classic metal releases of interest to collectors.

'Running with the Devil: Power, Gender, and Madness in Heavy Metal Music' -Robert Walser Aimed at the most popular examples of heavy metal, this analysis peers into issues of gender and power as ethnographic vectors of impetus toward participation in the metal genre. The interpretations of reasoning and ideologies behind music, while limited to less than self-articulate examples in many cases, are the strength of this book. page 17 THE INFORMER JULY 2010

interview

By: Les Porter

A BEER WITH JOSH. During the Derelict show I ended up in the back room of Third sitting down and drinking a beer with some guy I had just met. It turned out that he is the guitar player in this band I keep hearing about Vale of Hinnom. I got to talking to him about music and during the conversation we had a few laughs. For some strange reason I figured this would be a good time to get the skinny on what’s up with the band. So in my current state of genius I turned my little recorder on and... Les: Ok, so tell us who you are etc. Josh: My name is Josh Lamarsh and I am an alcoholic, and I play in this band called Vale of Hinnom. Les: I heard through the grape vine that you have a demo recording. Have you released it? Josh: We did do a demo, but it’s shitty. That is why we don’t even try to sell it to people. We have given it away for free before so just talk to the guitar player named Josh with the long hair and he will give you a demo ha ha. Les: That sounds good. So is there any tour plans for the recording?

Josh: Ha ha, There is actually a tour planned for this recording! And, we’re going on tour from June twenty first to the twenty ninth. We’re hitting Williams Lake, Kamloops, Kelowna, Chilliwack, Edmonton, Calgary, Mexico, and Hawaii. Les: That makes a lot of sense. Josh: Yes it makes perfect sense. Les: So how long has this band been around for? Josh: We haven’t even been together for a year yet. It will be a year in December. Les: That’s really too bad. Josh: Ha ha, I think that is fuckin awesome man! What the fuck? At this point one of Josh’s friends asked about a keyboard player in the band. Josh replied: We don’t have a keyboard player... Oh wait. We have a keyboard player who plays on one song. He is actually coming along on tour to play one song! Les: That’s dedication! I missed your set tonight what can you describe your music as? Josh: I can’t answer that question. Les: For the fans of the questionable genre where can they find you? Josh: In the bar! Fed up with my simple questions Josh grabbed my recorder and started to ask me some questions... Josh: So what is it like living in Prince George? Les: It’s interesting enough, but well not at all actually ha ha. Josh: Ah, sorry I didn’t know you were a professional interviewee. I guess I suck then? So what do you think of the great Vale of Hinnom? Les: Yeah, I missed that set tonight... Josh: And that’s why we don’t interview him anymore... Adam, what about you, how are you? Adam: Well, I’m doing pretty fuckin good here in the V.I.P. room! Aaaarrrgh! And this is about the last thing I can decipher from the mess of a recording I came home with that night... I hope to get a chance to sit down with the whole band some day and get a little more in depth. So anyway, thanks to Josh for putting up with me for a few minutes. I’ll also let you guys in on a little secret: I have seen these guys play live before I was just messing with Josh. They kick ass. a Check them out: http://www.myspace.com/valeofhinnom page 5 THE INFORMER JULY 2010

Business Spotlight Pacific Body Jewellery & Piercing Prince George, B.C.

Owners - John & Elaine Zukowski

body piercing in the 2009 Prince George Free Press’ ‘Best of PG’ list. Not only do they go above and beyond sanitation and sterilization requirements (Ask about our autoclave!), but they also treat everyone with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Here’s a riddle for you: What’s cleaner than a ‘tween’ boutique, less intimidating than a tattoo parlor, and locally owned and operated? Pacific Body Jewellery & Piercing! Pacific Body Jewellery & Piercing is a locally owned and operated business located in downtown Prince George that serves people from all over BC and beyond.

Owners John and Elaine Zukowski opened their first piercing studio in Abbotsford in 1992, with John piercing and Elaine handling jewellery sales. Despite the enforcement of "special" regulations by the property manager (no use of the word "piercing" on signs, and window blinds closed 24 hours a day), word of mouth quickly spread, and they were as busy as they wanted to be. Though the couple left the business to try the corporate route once again, they couldn’t stay away from body piercing entirely. John offered personalized piercing seminars for establishments that wanted to learn specific piercings. With the success of said seminars, John was convinced that body piercing was not a fad, and that the possibility of making a career out of poking holes in people was real. With that, they started a new piercing studio in Victoria, BC, and later relocated up north to Prince George. For eighteen years, Pacific Body Jewellery & Piercing has been setting the standard for professional piercing establishments all over the province, thanks to their way of appealing to both parents and their children, students and teachers, and the young and the young at heart. Set foot in the store and you too will see why they’ve been voted #1 for both ear and page 13 THE INFORMER JULY 2010

John and Elaine have become known for their ability to appeal to every age group imaginable with their straightforward attitude and approach to body piercing. Never has John used a piercing gun, nor will he ever do so, and if asked why, he will not hesitate to tell you every spring-loaded detail. Elaine also impresses countless clients with her know-how of body jewellery, from what the simple differences between a captive bead ring and a bananabell are, to what Ti 6AL 4V ELI means, and why it matters. Whether you come in for a professionally-done piercing by John; seeking infinite wisdom from Elaine; or to hear the opinions of their daughter, Caitie (whose wit is as sharp as the needles her father uses to pierce), Pacific Body Jewellery & Piercing has something for everyone. So what are you waiting for? Call us at 250-563-0643 or stop by today! submitted by: Caitie Zukowski http://wreckandroll.tk

In 1999 a metal guitarist named Shawn Hill wanted to start a metal band in his small town of Quesnel B.C. After a not so short search around the small city, and then several line up changes, and then several name changes the groove metal band Four Horns was born. By 2002 the band consisted of: Jon ‘GoatCock’ Mathies, Shawn Hill, Les Porter, and Clint Stroud. In 2003 the group recorded their first ep “Playing With Bulls”. Over the years countless D.I.Y. (do it yourself) albums were made and sold at local shows. These first homemade albums were the beginning of Black Earth Records. Jon, Shawn, Les, and Clint were later joined by local metal artists Myles Ned, and Rachel Martin. Together in various combinations these artist were responsible for creating several bands in addition to Four Horns, including: My Friend GoatCock, Higher Amplifier and Stab Wound. Black Earth Records released albums and samplers featuring all these projects. Now most of the early material can be found for free download in the blog on myspace.com/blackearthrecords.

transforming it into a net / D.I.Y. grindcore label. The label will now be supporting mainly novelty grindcore acts by offering online support and free online archiving to help these types of acts get more exposure in British Columbia, Canada, and the world. On occasion the label will also be releasing limited edition Cds. While these releases will definitely not be for everybody Black Earth will be offering something different in the interiors already rich metal scene.

As the years went on and families began to grow members slowly ended up going their separate ways, and stopped recording new material. As a result the label became dormant for a few years only releasing two net albums by Les’s solo Project, Higher Amplifier. Recently, however, as a reaction to the ever growing underground grindcore scene Les has decided to breathe new life into Black Earth

We’re just getting started again here at Black Earth. There is much planned so check into myspace.com/blackearthrecords regularly! We are always interested in talking to bands that have projects on the go, but remember the heavier the better! Look out for Higher Amplifier live dates too!

They kick ass. a Check them out: http://www.myspace.com/valeofhinnom page 5 THE INFORMER JULY 2010

So is there any tour plans for the recording?

the book shelf 'Heavy Metal: A Cultural Sociology' -Deena Weinstein A reasonable summary of most academic study so far, which indulges heavy metal as an extreme offshoot of rock in which rebellion is the prime goal and the fundamental ceremony is the concert.
