THAYER GALLERY

HOURS monday - friday 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM WHEN SCHOOL IS IN SESSION

Located in the lower level of Thayer Academy’s Southworth Library, the Thayer Gallery has been showcasing student, faculty, and professional artists for over 40 years. Renovated in 2011, the Gallery area is a beautiful, bright, and open 1200-squarefoot space. “Every year the Thayer Gallery displays some of the finest artwork in the local area, while also allowing for students and faculty to showcase work,” notes Thayer Gallery Director, Karen Koskores. “We have a wonderful mix of media and styles each year, which helps to enlarge the minds and creative possibilities of all who visit.” If you are interested in displaying your work please contact Karen Koskores, Gallery Director, at: kkoskores@thayer.org or at 781.843.3580.

Richard T. Brady has been profoundly influenced by the near decade he spent living, studying, working and traveling in Italy. The Italian experience shaped him as an artist. It provided him with a classical education and an intimate knowledge of the Italian art traditions. His work has received numerous reviews and awards. He has exhibited widely in this country and abroad, such as The Museum of the City of New York, Wichita Art Museum, Society of the Four Arts (Palm Beach, Florida), Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown, Ohio), Forum Gallery(New York City), Capricorn Galleries (Bethesda, Maryland) and Galleria Menghelli (Florence, Italy).

Of a recent one-person exhibit of his work at Duxbury’s Art Complex Museum, Sue Scheible of the Patriot Ledger.com wrote, “The works are large and stunning, enveloping you in the special environments that Brady has captured.” Executed in oil, the paintings require layers of color to achieve the desired surface quality. Each image is drawn from life, but is not meant to be a mirror image. The hyper-realistic paintings suggest a symbolic expression beyond representational reality. TAKE FIVE OCT 15 nov 15

TAKE FIVE

TAKE FIVE reunites Cohen, Daley, McMahon, Tarlow and Wineberg, who last exhibited together twenty years ago. Artists with accomplished exhibition records, they share a friendship of creative exchange and critique. Thayer Gallery presents printmaking, painting, drawing, installation and sculpture in a dynamic range of affinity and difference. Lesley Cohen’s charcoal drawings reference our elusive past, transforming overlooked artifacts into intuitive abstractions. Erosions of time evoke tension between injustice and fairness. Cohen’s attentive surfaces and compositions, richly balance positive and negative. (lesleycohenart.com) From candy wrappers to crepuscular rays, Cathleen Daley’s geometric paintings are rooted in observation. Structure yields to process in indexes of time and place, as Daley hones formal qualities of color, color temperature, shape and edge. (cathleendaley.com)

Carol McMahon’s sculptures, paintings and assemblages explore home and family. Domestic objects are de-familiarized and accorded new relationships and narratives. A dollhouse inverted – books bound in paint unreadable – stuffed animals dissected and re-purposed. (cemcmahon.com) Interactions with materials inform Lois Tarlow’s paintings and prints – handmade paper, micaceous pigments, and marble dust collaborate with an initial impulse. Tarlow’s abstractions evolve from observation triggered by processes of nature and time. (loistarlow.com) Ellen Wineberg’s mixed media paintings dually excavate and obscure memento and memory. Energetic accretions of color combine with recycled quilts, old tools, embroidered dishtowels, and plumbing parts in themes of time and loss, hope and the abyss. (ellenwineberg.com)

Girls Just Wanna Paint is a group of a dozen award-winning professional artists, mostly from the South Shore (one from Rhode Island, originally from the South Shore). We are a “Challenge” group - “Challenge” is a term originally used online where a topic or theme is named, and each artist paints their interpretation of that topic (the works above are from our “White Challenge”). In 2009, I invited artist friends to join me, and we started a blog, “Girls Just Wanna Paint.“ Every month we take turns hosting a meeting and naming a topic. Our paintings reflect our different personalities, experiences and styles. Our meetings are full of mutual support, encouragement and fun! We bring our paintings to the meeting and talk about them, as well as what is new in the art world, locally and nationally. We share our experiences

with different workshops that we take to further our skills. Every month we publish our response to the challenge via the “GirlsJustWannaPaint” blog, our own individual blogs, and Facebook. We have hundreds of followers from around the country, and are known throughout the U.S. to painters who post their work online as well as collectors.
