PERSONAL STATEMENT

GROWING UP AS A MILITARY CHILD HAS PROVIDED ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE VARIOUS THINGS AND AFTER LIVING IN SO MANY HOMES, ARCHITECTURE ALMOST SEEMED LIKE AN EASY CHOICE IN TERMS OF A CAREER PATH. I’VE ALWAYS EXCELLED IN THE ARTS THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL AND IMMERSED MYSELF IN ALL FORMS OF IT, FROM PENCIL TO PAPER AND MULTIPLE FORMS OF PERFORMING ARTS AS I PLAYED THE VIOLIN AND TOOK PART IN PLAYS AND MUSICALS. INITIALLY I WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST, I ALMOST DIDN’T CARE WHAT KIND JUST AS LONG AS IT WAS SHOWN TO AN AUDIENCE; I WANTED TO BE INVOLVED IN SOMETHING THAT GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE MY HANDS TO CREATE SOMETHING IMPORTANT. IN MY FRESHMAN YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL MY FATHER HAD A CORRECTIVE SURGERY DUE TO HIS LABOR IN THE SERVICE; AFTER THIS HE GOT AN INFECTION AND HAD TO STAY IN A HOSPITAL FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD. DURING THIS TIME MY FAMILY ESSENTIALLY LIVED IN THIS HOSPITAL WITH HIM; I WOULD WAKE UP AND FOLLOW A DAILY CYCLE OF HOSPITAL VISITS. AFTER BEING EXPOSED TO HEALTHCARE FACILITIES FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME DUE TO MY FATHER’S DISABILITY, I APPRECIATED THE COMPLEXITY OF ARCHITECTURE NOT JUST AS AN ART, BUT ITS ABILITY TO ORGANIZE, INSPIRE AND HEAL. THIS ENCOURAGED THE DESIRE TO PURSUE A CAREER IN ARCHITECTURE AND FOCUS ON THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC HEALTH. FOCUSING ON THE SPACES THAT ENABLE THE TRANSITION OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE.

RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION

GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE THAT CATERED TO THE USERS OF SACRED SPACES AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES AS WELL AS BE ABLE TO TRANSLATE THE IDIOM OR THEMATIC ELEMENTS THAT STEM FROM THE RELIGION YOU WERE TASKED WITH.

BUILDING STUDIO FALL 2016

CREATING A GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH WAS THE GOAL OF MY DESIGN. THE MAIN CONCEPT WAS ROOTED IN CREATING A MODERN EXPERIENCE FROM AN EARLY FORM OF CHRISTIANITY. TAKING ELEMENTS FROM EARLY BYZANTINE ARCHITECTURE AND MARRYING THEM WITH MODERN ELEMENTS. IN ORDER TO DO THIS THE CHURCH WAS CENTERED AROUND MARRYING THE EXPERIENCES OF THE SACRED AND SECULAR SPACES; REPRESENTING THEM AS HEAVEN AND EARTH AND CREATING A SPACE THAT BRIDGED THE TWO.

TYPOLOGICAL HYBRIDIZATION

UTILIZING A SITE USUALLY SITED WITH ROWHOMES THE TASK WAS TO CREATE A TYPOLOGICAL “HYRBID” THAT COMBINED COMMON BUILDING TYPES TO CREATE A SINGLE PROPOSED BUILDING TYPE. IN ORDER TO DO THIS TYVOLI AVE -IN BALTIMORE CITY- IS THE SITE IN WHICH TO ACCOMPLISH THIS

URBAN DESIGN SPRING 2016

PARK HEIGHTS: A COMMUNITY LOCATED IN NORTHWEST BALTIMORE AND SUBJECT TO SEVERAL URBAN RENEWAL PROJECTS, IS UNDERGOING SIGNIFICANT TRANSFORMATION VIA THE ACQUISITION AND DEMOLITION OF A 62-ACR E AREA CENTERED ON PARK HEIGHTS AND WOODLAWN AVENUES. NEW PROPOSED URBAN SYSTEMS MUST BE INTEGRATED INTO A NEW ECONOMICALLY VIABLE COMMUNITY THAT PROVIDES ACCESS BY DIFFERENT INCOME TYPES AND VARIOUS BUILDING TYPES THROUGHOUT THE SITE; STRENGTHENING THE VITALITY OF THE AREA AND SUPPORT THE FUNCTIONS AND QUALITY OF DAILY LIFE

IT WAS IMPORTANT TO CREATE GREEN SPACES AT ANCHORING POINTS OF EACH BLOCK NOT ONLY TO SUPPORT THESE AREAS BUT ALSO ACTS AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE VEHICULAR AND PEDESTRIAN NETWORKS

A NETWORK DESIGNED FOR PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC BECAME NECESSARY BECAUSE IT WAS CRITICAL TO ASSOCIATE THE COMMUNITY WITH ITSELF BY MEANS OF A WALKABLE PATH THROUGH THE DIFFERENT HOUSING TYPOLOGIES

THESE ELEMENTS WERE CRUCIAL IN ENSURING THAT THE COMMUNITY WAS PROVIDED WITH THE ABILITY TO EXPERIENCE THEIR COMMUNITY

DUPLEX TYPOLOGY 88 UNITS TOTAL THE DUPLEX TYPOLOGY IS LOCATED ALONG THE TWO EXTREMES OF THE SITE AS IT SERVES AS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE LARGER SINGLE FAMILY HOMES OUTSIDE OF THE RFQ BOUNDARY AS WELL AS THE INTRODUCTION OF A HIGHER DENSITY PER ACRE WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE SITE.

APARTMENT TYPOLOGY 195 UNITS TOTAL

ROWHOME TYPOLOGY 186 UNITS TOTAL

THE BASIS FOR PROVIDING THIS TYPOLOGY WITH ITS LOCATION IS BECAUSE IT NOT ONLY SERVES AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE TWO DIFFERING SINGLE FAMILY TYPOLOGIES BUT ALSO AS AN ANCHOR WHERE THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION OF THE COMMUNITY EXISTS. THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE PARK HEIGHTS AVE. HAS THE HIGHEST AMOUNT CIRCULATION THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT.

ROWHOMES ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO NOT ONLY THE CITY AS A PART OF THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT BUT ALSO SERVES AS A MEANS TO ACHIEVE A HIGHER DENSITY WHILE CONTROLLING THE SIZE OF A SINGLE FAMILY UNIT. THE LOCATIONS OF THE ROWHOME STREETS ARE POSITIONED THE WAY THEY ARE BECAUSE IT CONTINUES A TREND SEEN OUTSIDE OF THE SITE.

03 HOUSING STUDIO FALL 2015

PARK HEIGHTS REDEVELOPMENT ROWHOME THIS PROJECT EXPLORES A COMMON URBAN HOUSING TYPE: THE ROWHOME FROM THE LENS OF DENSITY AND DIVERSITY TO DEVELOP A PROTOTYPE THAT CAN BE USED IN AN URBAN SETTING. THE MAIN FOCUS IN CREATING A ROWHOME TYPE WAS QUALIFYING ITS USE FOR A LIVE WORK TENANT AND THE INTEGRATION OF VIEWS AND THE DESIGNATION OF OUTDOOR SPACES NOT NORMALLY SEEN IN A TYPOLOGICAL EXAMPLE OF A ROWHOME. THE CREATION OF INDOOR SPACES THAT ARE NOT TYPICAL OF COMMON ROWHOMES WAS ALSO IMPORTANT IN DISTINGUISHING ITS TYPE BECAUSE IT PROVIDES USERS WITH AN EXPERIENCE NOT READILY AVAILABLE WITH COMMON ROWHOME TYPOLOGIES

ARTSCAPE - SPACE PLACE

ARTSCAPE IS AN ANNUAL ART FESTIVAL THAT IS HELD IN JULY THAT HAS BECOME THE LARGEST FREE ARTS FESTIVAL IN AMERICA. AS A DESIGN/ BUILD STUDIO WE WERE TASKED WITH CREATING AN INSTALLATION THAT WILL BE SEEN BY ALL OF THE ARTSCAPE PARTICIPANTS.

URBAN DESIGN SPRING 2016

THE CONCEPT BEHIND SPACE PLACE WAS TO CREATE A “SPACE OUT OF SPACE.” WITH THIS CONCEPT IN MIND THE IDEA WAS TO BRING THE SOLAR SYSTEM WE KNOW TO A HUMAN LEVEL SO THAT THE SOLAR SYSTEM COULD INTERACT WITH THE ENVIRONMENT AT THE HUMAN SCALE. IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THIS THE CLASS WAS REQUIRED TO LEARN A VARIETY OF SKILLS NOT PRIMARILY TAUGHT IN THE CORE STUDIO COURSES AT CBEIS. BEFORE THIS CLASS I DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO SEW. PUTTING TOGETHER A VARIETY OF TALENTS AND SKILLS ALLOWED THE CLASS TO PRODUCE AN INSTALLATION THAT PROVIDED ENTERTAINMENT TO THE MASSIVE AMOUNT OF EYES THAT ENCOUNTERED IT AT ARTSCAPE. AS A PART OF CLASS I AIDED ITS EFFORTS BY PROVIDING THE CLASS WITH THE TEMPLATES NEEDED TO CREATE THE PLANETS FORM USING THE CNC ROUTER. GIVING THE TEMPLATES TO THE CLASS IN A SCHEDULE THAT ALLOWED A SEAMLESS TRANSITION FOR THE WORKING OF ONE PLANET TO ANOTHER. BEYOND THE PHYSICAL ELEMENTS OF THE PROJECT I WAS ALSO A PART OF THE “SITE PLANNERS.” WORK ON THIS TEAM INCLUDED THE PLANNING OF THE PLANETS; INCLUDING THEIR LOCATIONS ON THE SITE, AND HOW THEY WOULD BE PUT TOGETHER. THE SITE PLANNERS WERE ALSO IN CHARGE OF THE PLANETS FABRICATION.

2 COMMENCEMENT

3 TESTING ELEMENTS

IN ORDER TO PROCEED WITH THE TASK AT HAND THE NEED TO DESIGN A STRATEGY WAS CRUCIAL. IT WAS IMPORTANT TO TRAIN INDIVIDUALS SKILLS THAT THEY MAY NOT HAVE HAD PRIOR TO THIS AS WELL AS FORMULATE A PLAN AS TO HOW TO CONSTRUCT THE STRUCTURES THAT WE NEEDED TO CREATE FOR THIS FESTIVAL.

AFTER EVERYONE UNDERSTOOD HOW TO PROCEED. IT WAS MY JOB TO CREATE THE TEMPLATES THAT EVERYONE WAS GOING TO USE IN ORDER TO BEGIN. USING THE CNC ROUTER TEMPLATES WERE MADE SO THAT UNIFORM SHAPES CAN BE CUT AND SEWN TOGETHER FOR A COHESIVE SHAPE TO FORM.

AFTER CREATING A “FULL PLANET” IT WAS IMPORTANT TO TEST IT TO SEE ANY ERROR SO THAT THEY MAY BE FIXED FOR FINAL PRODUCTION AND NOT REPEATED.

4 SUPPORTING ELEMENTS

5 PRE- FINAL

6 FINAL SET-UP

NOT ONLY WERE WE TASKED WITH CREATING “SPACE” WITHIN A SPACE BUT WE WERE ALSO TASKED WITH PROVIDING USERS WITH DIDACTIC ELEMENTS TO PROVIDE AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND HOW EACH OF THESE PIECES WERE GOING TO FIT ON THE SITE NOT ONLY DID WE HAVE TO FULLY ASSEMBLE THE SOLAR SYSTEM IN A SPACE THAT ALLOWED FOR IT BUT ALSO PRESENT THIS COLLABORATION TO THE MEDIA TO GAUGE REACTIONS AND PROJECT SUCCESS.

UPON COMPLETING EVERYTHING IT WAS THEN TIME TO SET UP THE INSTALLMENT ON THE ACTUAL SITE FOR ALL OF THE USERS OF THE ARTSCAPE FESTIVAL TO SEE AND EXPERIENCE.
