1. Course Objectives: The course provides students with fundamental knowledge about wireless communication and networks from architectures to protocol design. Morover, it surveys the breath of wirelesss devices and protocols in commercial use today. The course also exposes students to the history and future trends in wireless technologies. Besides, the students can conducts the labs/experiments to strenghthen the lectures and implement some applications based on wireless networks.

2. Course outline: The course introduces the concept of several wireless networks with many aspects such as architecture, protocols and applications. Several topics related to wireless networking will be covered, including a brief overview of physical layer issues, topics in cellular systems, medium access control, wireless capacity , mobile IP , routing protocols for wireless multi-hop networks, sensor networks, TCP over wireless networks, and wireless security.

andapplications. Subject Specific Skills: 1. Ability to analyze the wireless channels, propagation models and calculate the path-lost, link budget, 2. Ability to understand and implement the common MAC protocols and evaluate their performance. 3. Ability understand the architecture, protocols of several mobile networks such as GSM, UMTS and other techniques used in these networks such as handover, power control,… 4. Ability to understand the satellite networks, the localization techniques used in GPS systems 5. Ability to analyze the architecture and protocols of Wireless LAN and Mobile IP. Besides, routing and handover in Mobil IP are also provided thoroughfully. 6. Ability to understand the WPAN such as Bluetooth, Ad-hoc networks, sensor networks in many aspects of architecture, protocols and deployment of some WPAN applications; 7. Ability to analyze and design a routing protocol in wireless personal networks to target a specific application. 8. Ability to analyze the TCP performance in wireles networks anh implement TCP for these networks. 9. Ability to use simulator to perform simulations such as TOSSIM, Contiki OS for sensor networks 10. 5. Learning Strategies & Assessment Scheme: Learning strategies: - Read lecture notes and reference books before each class - Participate lecture hours, apply the knowledge to solve the engineering problems, solving exercieses or present a new topic. - Use simulators to carrry out the mini-project and present the assigned topic Assessment schme: - Quizes (10%) - Homeworks (10%) - Mid-term exam (20%) - Mini-project (20%) - Final exam (40%) Tr.2/4
