It began life as Macroom Workhouse in 1843, to provide for the destitute of the surrounding district, an area of some 20 square miles. It was intended for 650 occupants and half of the places were filled in its first year of operation. Macroom Workhouse was burned down in May 1921, during the War of Independence. Unfortunately, many of the early records were also destroyed in the fire. Only a small section of the original building still remains, but Macroom Hospital was rebuilt in the 1930's. Today Macroom Community Hospital bears no resemblance to the Union of former times. It has a bed capacity of 38, offering continuing care, community support, palliative care and respite services for the older person from Macroom and neighbouring parishes in the North Lee West area. It is part of the PC3 pillar of the HSE South. The services are provided to patients in a holistic ethos and delivered in a friendly informal atmosphere with a dedicated team of doctors, nurses and attendant-carers and allied health professionals. Cunamh, a Mental Health Day Care Centre was opened in 2002 to complement the services in St. Colman's House, the high support mental health facility. Regional clinics are also held in Cork, Galway and Limerick. There is a strong research element to the National Centre for Medical Genetics and a number of NGMG staff have University College Dublin appointments. The laboratories participate in both UK and European quality assessment schemes and are accredited by CPA (UK) Ltd. A range of tests are performed routinely in-house. For other disorders, it is often possible to identify an outside laboratory to which samples can be sent for testing. The Society of Urology was set up in 1973 to co-ordinate the work of Urologists in the whole of Ireland including training, research and appointments.
