group work tyler guidroz + mark stauning fall 2012 tasked with combining an aquatic center with a hotel, spa, restaurant, and commercial spaces into one complex on a post-industrial site along the industrial canal, this proposal began with a response to the uniqueness of the proposal’s program in relation to the working class neighborhood it inhabits. picking up on this inconsistency, the design aims to separate this special program with its context completely. the aqauatic center is shielded physically and experientially from its context, internalizing the focus of its visitors. to visit the aquatic center is to be transported to an isolated environment which responds to an independent aesthetic and logic of construction. This new world removes visitors from new orleans’ rough bywater neighborhood, delivering them an oasis bounded only by deck and sky.

URBANbuild is a design|build program in which teams of students take on the design and construction of prototypical homes for New Orleans’ neighborhoods. The program is an educational collaboration of individuals, organizations, and businesses committed to revitalizing New Orleans’ rich cultural and architectural heritage. Neighborhoods are strengthened by the rebuilding of homes, allied professionals and educators come together for a common cause, and students develop as designers with a deep understanding and commitment to the urban environment.

IL CAVATAPPI

piazza di sant’ignaziorome, italy


fall 2011 (competition finalist)

il cavatappi fills the void of piazza sant’ignazio with a monument to 21st century engineering and formal generation. the piazza features highly stylized cornice lines which indirectly reference a horizontal datum within the church of saint ignatious. to understand the existing condition in a new way, il cavatappi projects a live feed of the interor of the church onto the church’s facade. as visitors ascend through the core of structure, special moments direct view and interaction to allow for a dramatic reveal of the church’s new ‘x-ray’ facade.

INTERSECTION NETWORKS

advanced 3d modelingcomputational design

the aim of this exercise was to create an autonomous system for creating geometry in which no element intersected another. lofted geometry is created, driven by a bottom, middle, and top grid of squares. the process is written to create the first lofted form, move to the next set of grid squares, loft the second form, and check to see if the two intersected each other. only if the volumes do not intersect does the second volume get added. this process is repeated until the grid is exhausted. first loft successful
