An area of Evangelist Kingsley’s life that many are not aware of except those who have worked directly with him; is that he has been blessed in many spiritual gifts. Apart from being naturally inclined to minister in song, he also is endowed with an anointing of both an Apostle and Pastor. “How so?” one may ask. For instance, he has

JOHNATHAN MACK A

ugust 16th, 2006 was the dawning of a celestial choir on earth. The Crusade Ensemble came to be under the leadership of Psalmist, Jonathan Mack. This aggregation of singers are made up of different christian denominations such as Pentecostal, Baptist, Apostolic, Seven Day Adventist and Nazarene. Their based out of Far Rockaway, Queens, NY. They're deemed a community choir, but definitely has a global mission.

Jonathan received many prophetic words from the age of 12 declaring that God had called him and a group of levites to go to the nations declaring His word through the ministry of singing. Jonathan waited on the Lord for instruction. Finally in June 2006 he received instruction to begin this choir. God instructed him to name the choir CRUSADE because they would incite a holy war for God. The highly anointed Crusade Ensemble are striving to be the end time levites that possess the power and anointing to cast down strongholds, set captives free, and destroy yokes. Their goal is to minister to the broken hearted and down-troddened and encourage the hearts of many across the nations. They're a community choir with a global mission!

ADVICE COLUMN QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH BISHOP MICHAEL A. FRITH

Question: I lived with my father and stepmother for most of my years and was never treated as part of the family. My younger sister (the only child for my father and stepmother) would get preferential treatment. Now that I am married and is a step-mother for my husband’s oldest child, I often find myself treating him the way I was treated. How do I break this trend? Answer: It is a great start that you acknowledge that the way you are treating your stepson is wrong. That is one of the first steps to resolving the problem. One of the other steps is to find out why you treat him this way after being mistreated yourself and not liking it. Put yourself in his shoes and remember how you would feel when you were not being treated with the love, assurance and acceptance that a child definitely needs. Now think about the scars that were inflicted on you by parents that were probably unaware of the harm they were causing by their behavior toward you. I don’t think that they did it on purpose; I believe they treated you that way out of ignorance. You see, the bible instructs us to prefer others over ourselves, and so, I believe that if you truly love your husband, you will realize and understand that your step-son is the seed of your husband, and if you love your husband, you will also love his son. Also, you must keep in mind that how you treat him, (your step-son) will help to shape the rest of his life. If he is made to feel inferior and rejected now, he will develop a mindset of inferiority and rejection. He will always be in search of love and acceptance, which he will never be able to fully achieve, because he never knew love and acceptance on the home front. The way to break this trend is to accept that

there is a problem (which you already did) and come to terms with the fact that you CAN STOP THIS CYCLE OF ABUSE. You were abused by your parents and so now you are abusing your step-son. Start by taking some small steps until it becomes natural for you to be nice to this child. You can start by asking about his day, etc. Watch a program together and then talking about it, spend some alone quality time with him. Take him to church. You can even (depending on his age) explain to him how you were treated as a child, and tell him that you haven't been the best mom and that it’s not his fault, but you are going to try harder to be a better mom. Tell him how sorry you are for not considering him. Work your way up to telling him that you love him. Try this and you will see a huge difference. Also, another added benefit is that your husband will love and appreciate you a little bit more when he sees you treating his child with love. Question: When I’m around my colleagues and hear them bragging about their husband's love and care, I wish then that I wasn't married. My husband has never said "I love you." Do you think he has fallen out of love with me and how do I make him love me again? Answer: First of all, did you ever hear the old saying; "all that glitters isn't gold"? The grass always seems a little greener on the other side of the fence. You say that your husband has never said "I love you". If he has never said this, then why do you believe that he has fallen out of love with you? Sometimes we focus on what people say, rather than what they don’t say. If you didn’t believe at one time that he did indeed love you, then why did you get married? Point is, even though it is beautiful to hear it, I am sure that he has shown you how much he loves you even though you say he has never actually said it. What are his actions saying to you? Is it saying that he loves or even cares for you? You have to consider his background, culture and upbringing when you think about him telling you that he loves you. Sometimes we put expectation overload on others based on our past, and our loved ones just can’t live up to our expectations. Maybe his intent is to say that he loves you, but his extent can only show you he loves you. You ask how can you make him

love you again, suggesting that you know that he did love you in the first place. Stop and think about what it is that attracted you to him in the first place. Are you the same woman that he was attracted to, or did marriage change you? What are you doing or not doing now that you would do in the past that would make him can’t wait to see you, or come home to you? What do you think that you can do to spark his interest again? How about a gentle touch, an encouraging word, praise when he does something? (This something can be anything, taking out the garbage, coming home early, etc). Men are problem solvers, so let him be the problem solver, let him 'fix' something now and then. Tell him how good he looks, tell him how much you admire him.....tell him how much you love him. Be his help mate, be the woman that God intended for you to be for your husband. Also, keep in mind that while it may be true how wonderful your colleagues home lives are, all that glitters isn't necessarily gold. Sometimes when we lack for something, we over emphasize it. It could be that they too wished their husbands would treat them great. Even if the reality is that they are being treated great by their husbands, always live in hope that one day, you too will have a great story to tell. Marriage is a sacred institution sanctioned by God, and so, while there is life there is hope. Never give up hope. Saturate this in prayer, and you will see the turnaround; and most importantly, never let anyone outside your marriage ever make you wish you were not married. Question: Nobody in my family excelled educationally. I wanted to make a difference so I went to be trained as a teacher. Now I'm experiencing a high level of resentment which makes me feel very uncomfortable. How do I deal with this? Answer: Congratulations on becoming a teacher. It is a wonderful thing for you to see something you want, set your mind to it and then to achieve it. It is a commendable action which proves that you have tenacity, stickability, determination and drive. It also shows your mindset to excel. This might very well be your first challenge as a teacher; to explain to your family and get them to understand your drive behind your determina-

tion to make something of yourself. If you can achieve this, then you are on your way to becoming a master teacher. Sometimes familiarity breeds contempt, and so, maybe for whatever reason, your family feels as if their lives have passed them by and they are resentful for that? Or, could it be that now that you have achieved something that noone else in your family has achieved, you are acting better than them or treating them with contempt? Could it be your own discomfort comes from within and not without? Step back from the situation and take a good look at it. Try to meet your family at least half way. They did the best they could with what they had. Don’t let a higher education change you or the way you look at your family. Question: My un-married sister was an active member of her church but has gotten pregnant. It is the policy of the church to have her membership withdrawn from the church. Is this approach biblical? Answer: While it might be the policy of the church to have her membership withdrawn, it is not a biblical approach. Our God is a God of love and restoration. The fact that she is pregnant and not married should be enough of a shame for her. (The child is not the shame, the act of getting pregnant out of wedlock is). Especially that she was an active member of her church, and so, I believe that taking her out of her office would be enough punishment for her. How are we to reconcile her back to her first love, the God that we serve, when we take her out of the church? If we as a church family can't minister to her, then we certainly do not expect the world to minister to her. Understandably she fell and she got pregnant, but she has to live with that guilt or shame until she is delivered from it. A loving church family, intent on restoration will help to nurture her back to the right path. We have to give her a victorious ending to her testimony and we can do that by lovingly guiding her in her time of need. She was there for the church, and now the church should be there for her. While I am not condoning sin, we have to remember that a lot of our church members sin and still continue on in serving. The only difference here is that your sister has a belly to show for her sin.

Tá~itÄxÜ|x I am a small church who’s been saving to purchase a commercial building for four years. I have a $150K in cash and personally generate about $130$150K a year and I would like to buy a big enough place in the Jamacia Economic Development Zone for $550-$700K to accommondate our growing membership. I’ve been primarily using my personal debit card for church purchases, so I haven’t established much church or trade credit. Any Suggestions?

You have to get yourself a few credit cards in the church name, just two or three and start to use them to develop a church credit/trade history. Once you establish a good credit history

In this journey called “life”, God has provided landmarks and signs to help us reach our destination. There are signs of right and wrong directions; we see dead-end and wrong turn symbols, detours, and yield and stops signs that tell us where we are, where we have been, and where we are going. Are we paying attention? Suffering is inevitable, and as we continue our life on earth, we will encounter sadness or a loss of some kind. The tragedies and negative events we experience in life can either cripple our future or make us strong. There are ranges of active and undergoing changes, which may cause one to lose his way in life. A simple missing or making of a wrong turn, following the wrong directions, a failure to read the road signs, or just simply having insufficient information regarding the destination could all lead to one thing—not arriving at the expected end or at the appointed time. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God has an expected end for each of us. Despite the low points and rock bottom seasons we undergo, instead of blaming the Lord for the layout or pattern of the journey, we should take responsibility for the decisions we make and resist the opportunity for blaming others for where we are. Even the sailor knows that someday he will

face turbulent weather. It is his responsibility to train and exercise caution and to know the warning signs. Likewise, the designated driver is also responsible for knowing and reviewing the course of his journey. But failure to recognize or obey the signs of the road could lead to fatal or regrettable consequences. When we accept Jesus Christ into our hearts, we are very much like the designated driver or sailor. We are given the keys to life and a road map called the Bible. During the course, we learn to recognize the various signs of the road and explore unfamiliar territory, but we are also subject to hazardous conditions, unpredictable weather, and the various changes of the speed limit. Failure to comply with the rules of our spiritual journey will often times take us off course, which will lead us to physical and spiritual dead-ends or somewhere in a back alley. Impatience, disobedience, ignorance, and self-will are the acts that hinder us from attaining our goals. Are we paying attention? Tilt your heart toward the SON! NardaGoodsonMinistries.org

LEGEND OF

BIOGRAPHY OF OTIS B WRIGHT LEGENDS Gooden Ministries & writer Maizie Vassell

O

tis was born Otis Bertram Wright, the first son and second child of Charles and Urcelyn Wright, on February 7th 1941at Merrywood in the parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica West Indies. He attended Merrywood All Age School, where his leadership abilities made him a “Head Boy”, or, teacher’s aide. Otis inherited a Ukulele from his mother, and quickly learned to play it. At nights, when the people gathered at his mother’s shop he would place himself strategically in front of one or both guitarists who would just come to play for fun. He learned well, because there was only one string left on his instrument, but he would bring it along anyway and play with the men who soon began to request his company when they went to play. Otis moved to Kingston in the late 1950’s, and worked for several establishments. However, music remained a part of his psyche. While working at one of these places a personal experience led him to write his first song, ”Crackers Rush”. He was closely attached to the church back in Merrywood and consequently did not want to jump into the secular world of music. However, this song was recorded by a well known artist at the time, Bobby Atkins, the brother of the re known Laurel Atkins. In the early 1960’s Otis became a Christian and the chief

musician in his church. He is known for being the first to play an electric guitar in a Jamaican church. His church was located at the top of Trench Town where future stars such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Ken Parker, and several others would come to the church windows to listen to the rhythms Otis was playing. He began writing gospel songs, joined himself with a church brother and best friend Alton and began recording. They were simply known as Otis and Alton. One of the first songs recorded was “Man from Galilee” . This was a big hit, and soon one could not go through a Sunday, and other days without hearing this song on the radio, being played in the Juke boxes, and on turn tables everywhere. This exposure caught the attention of some of Jamaica’s most famous producers such as Sir Coxsons, Duke Reid, Ms. Pottinger, and others. Alton went off to Viet Nam and it was once again just Otis Wright. He began travelling and performing in the United States. He was encouraged to go the way of singers in the secular world. Tempting, but not tempted, he remained true to his faith and church. Otis married Dorothy Laird and produced two children in Jamaica. He studied and became a photographer, and film technician, and worked for the Jamaican Broadcasting Cooperation. He also ran a small photography business as well.

Otis migrated to the United States in 1969, where he established his own business. He also moved up in his church. He later answered the call to become a pastor. The choice for him was not an easy one, giving up a lucrative business to become a ‘fisher of men’, and a shepherd. However, he did, and has been pasturing a church to date. He and Dorothy produced three more children all of whom are in ministry in the United States. Pasturing did not stop Otis from writing, in fact he has written dozens of wonderful songs most of which has not been recorded to date. Over the years Otis continued to perform his songs in and out of the United States, but his best rewards come from the many choirs and musicians he has trained. He is often encouraged by the testimonies of many pastors, church leaders and others who credit their turning to salvation, singing, and pasturing to the great influence he had on them. Otis has received many well earned accolades and awards over the years, and is still in demands to perform. Otis has profoundly impacted the world of gospel music reaching far and wide and has made an indelible mark in that genre forever. He has truly earned the title of “Jamaican Father of Gospel Music.”

THE KINGDOM THE PRIVILEGES OF BUILD Where There’s a Will There’s a Way DWELLING IN ZION THE PRAYER FOR ALL PEOPLE By Joan Haughton

By The Rt. Hon. Rev. Dr. Rabbi Keith Elijah Thompson

Thou art our God who is in heaven and on earth. Thou art mighty, powerfull and strong. The standard bearer of tens of thousand; at your Word, things came into being at your command. For the spirit of the Lord God Jehovah is upon me, for He has anointed me to preach the Gospel to all people. For in the presence of the Lord there is fullness of joy and at your right hand there are pleasures forevermore. Holy God, at your command all things were created; at your voice they stood still. Your name is everlasting, your name is eternal, your name is most Holy; you liveth and reigneth forever and ever. Selah. Your purity can be seen all around. Your crown means salvation forever and for all. Your government is the fullness of righteousness; justice is the habitation of your throne, your Robe is the fullness of zeal. The faithfullness of your council is forever true. The workings of your truth in the hearts of men make them free. Holy Father, our God Jehovah-Adonai, Yahweh; we pray for all leaders: Clergy men and women, the body of Christ, the President of the United States and his family, Congress, Judiciary branch, Senators, Governors, Mayors, Assembly men and women, Councilmen and women, District Attorneys’, Law enforcement officers, Fire-fighters, our Arm Forces, Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Educators, Entrepreneurs. We also pray for Kings and Queens, those behind bars, those in the hospitals, our youth (our children) and those around the world, we pray for all nations and kindred. We pray in the name of Yeshua-Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. Amen.

What You Say Is What You Get Written By: Maizie Vassell (An excerpt from her up-coming book 'A better You Today For Tomorrow')

can’t take it anymore." "Life will never be better for me." "I stopped trying. Everything I tried failed" "I am fed up with life." Are these words sounding familiar to you? Sure! They are. Perhaps, these are words you have been speaking all your life! No wonder you are feeling depressed and unfulfilled. Are you feeling as though life has nothing to offer you and that all is lost?

Has sickness taken over your body? Is your marriage is failing? Is your business collapsing, and the dream you once had, is it buried and appear it can never be resurrected? Absolutely nothing seems to be working for you. The good thing is that you are not at the end. You can break down the stronghold of oppression, poverty, sickness, hatred and crime and speak prosperity, love and peace in your life. Thoughts, words and deeds are identical, in that, what you think becomes what you say and do. The words you speak and the things you do are not independent of thoughts. Hence, if your thoughts are negative - or positive for that matter, you will speak or do things to reflect positive or negative behaviour. Whatever you think habitually, at any given moment will become your words and deeds. James Allen (Med, Oct 16, 2006) says, "Thoughts, words and acts are seeds sown and by inviolable law of things they produce after their kind." Many times in life we take for granted the words we speak without the consciousness of the fact that what we say is what we get. Jesus was on His way from

Bethany and was hungry. He noticed a fig tree in full leaf a way off. So, He went over to see if He could get some figs to eat, but there was none, only leaves. Then He said to the fig tree, "May no one ever eat your fruit again!" The next morning the disciples passed by the fig tree and noticed that it had withered from the roots up. Peter remembered and said to Jesus, "Look Rabbi, the fig tree you cursed has withered and died!" Then Jesus said to His disciples, "For verily I say to you that whosoever shall say to this mountain be thou removed and be cast into the sea and shall not doubt in his heart that what he saith shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he saith." My friend, whatever change you want to see in your life, you can have it simply by speaking it and believing that God will bring it to pass. You do not have to go around blaming your present situation on your family background, your friends, your community, your broken marriage or on a former teacher of yours. You can, right now, change the course of your life by speaking exactly what you want to see happening and believe God that He will per-

form. You may have been told many times that you will come to nothing worthwhile in life, but that's not true. That's a lie from the pit of hell and you must not believe it. You can be the best in life if you will speak words to create the best in you and for you. Your words are powerful. So, start telling yourself that you can be anything you want to be in life; that you can achieve any goal you set out for, in spite of your present situations. Believe God for the change you want to see in your life. Speak good health; speak success for your business; speak prosperity for you and your family; speak long and lasting love; speak joy and happiness; speak contentment; and if you believe the words you speak, and that God has the power to bring them to pass in spite of your circumstances, then you shall have the desires of your heart. My friend, always remember that there is tremendous power in your words"for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh." What words are you speaking today? Remember, what you say is what you get.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE

VICTORY OVER COMMON WARFARE DREAMS some time in prayer to use the revelations to destroy the "tares" sown in his field. If action is not taken, the enemy can have his way as long as he chooses.

Pastor K. Femi Akojenu

I

Matt 13:24-25 " Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way." According to this passage, the enemy waited till the men who were supposed to be watching the field were asleep before the enemy sowed tares in his field. The time most people are asleep is at night. Many times evil is done to many people's lives at night time, especially between the hours of 12 midnight and 3 am. While the evil work is being done, you are likely to have a "bad" dream that wakes you up badly shaken. Unfortunately, because many people are ignorant of spiritual warfare, they thank God it was just a dream and go back to sleep. What they don't know is that it wasn't just a dream. It was a revelation of what is going on against their life. The best action a dreamer can take is to spend

Before I go on, I want to make a few important points 1. When you have a negative or warfare dream, it signifies either what has taken place, what is taking place or what your enemies are planning against your life. All of this cases require that you pray against what was revealed to you in your dream. 2. Just because you have a negative dream about someone doesn’t mean the negative thing you saw has to happen. For example, if you dreamt that somebody died. It doesnt mean they have to die. God is just alerting you to the plans of the enemy so you can stand in the gap for the person you saw in the dream. If you will pray against the plan of the enemy, the person will not die. Many ignorant christians have become messengers of doom. Instead of praying to avert evil, they turned themselves into messengers of evil messages. Many times, God allows you to see the evil coming against someone so that you can pray and fast if need be to stop the evil from happening in the life of the person. 3. Not having dreams at all or always forgetting your dreams is an attack against you. If the means God uses many times to tip you of of the enemy’s plan is blocked, how will you know what is going on against you so you can pray against it? If that is your problem, please

pray against the demonic attacks working against your dream life. There was a period in my life when I was under intensive warfare. While there wasn't any visible manifestation in the physical in my life at that time, there was serious warfare going on against me in the spiritual realm. Eight different times I dreamt about being shot at or someone throwing a big rock at me. Around the same time two family members dreamt that I died. A pastor friend of mine called me to tell me about a revelation he got about the spirit of death following me. It was a serious warfare. I had to declare fasting and prayer to cancel every plan of the enemy. Every casket that was set up for me was destroyed by the power of God. That was about 10 years ago. Obviously the devil lost and he will continue to lose. Let me also mention that not every dream indicate warfare. If you go to bed with a nagative thought, you may have a negative dream connected with that thought. I will like to show you how to trace the presence of spiritual warfare in the life of the dreamer. These dreams listed below reveal the Devil's hand: 1. Sexual encounter in dreams. This is a very common warfare dream, but since most people find it embarrassing, they usually will not talk about it. There are two spirits the enemy sends against men and women in their dreams. The first is known as Incubus, which is a spirit that sleeps with women in their dreams. The other is Succubus, which is a spirit that sleeps with men in their dreams.

W

I

D

E

G

These spirits may use the faces of ex-lovers, friends or such. They may even come as people of same sex. Unless you wake up and wage serious spiritual warfare, one or all of the following may take place in the life of the dreamer: # Difficulty getting married. # Difficult marital problems. # Difficulty getting pregnant. # Difficulty in the area of finances. 2. Dreams that result in affliction with the spirit of poverty. There are so many people today suffering serious oppression from the spirit of poverty. Usually people are tipped off in their dreams but because of lack of knowledge, nothing is done until the manifestation takes place. If you find yourself in the following situations in your dream, you need to start praying against the spirit of poverty: # Possession of counterfeit money. # Wallet stolen from you. # Wearing rags, shoes with holes. # Begging for money, food, etc. # Loss of cash, wallet, checkbook or paycheck. # Bank door closing in your face. .................TO BE CONTINUED Pastor Femi Akojenu holds deliverance and spiritual warfare services every week in Jamaica and Saint Albans. Pastor Femi is also available to speak at your church or conference. For more information or for prayer, please call 718-787-5268.

FLORIDA PASTOR NOT BACKING DOWN ON KORAN-BURNING An obscure U.S. Christian pastor whose plan to burn copies of the Koran on September 11 has sparked an international outcry said on Wednesday he would go ahead with the event despite warnings it would endanger American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Pastor Terry Jones, leader of a tiny Protestant church in Gainesville, Florida, which campaigns against what it calls "radical Islam," is facing a barrage of calls from U.S. government, military and religious leaders, and from abroad, to cancel plans to publicly burn Islam's holy book. "We are not convinced that backing down is the right thing," Jones, a gray-haired, mustachioed preacher and author of a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," told a crowd of reporters in a brief statement made in the grassy yard in front of his stone-and-metal church. "A burning of the Koran is to call attention that something is wrong," said Jones, wearing a gray suit and a tie."We need to stand up and confront terrorism," he added, referring to the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States by militant Islamist group al Qaeda. The planned Koran-burning on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks has attracted worldwide condemnation and touched off protests in Afghanistan and Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country. Top U.S. military commanders have warned the event could trigger violent retaliation against American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. "We would of course be very, very moved and very sad by that, but we would not feel responsible ... We are not going to be controlled by fears and threats," Jones later told CNN.

Law enforcement officials say Jones has already received death threats from suspected extremists, a development which had been anticipated in August by the FBI. An FBI intelligence bulletin dated August 19 assessed "with high confidence that, as with past incidents perceived as acts of desecration against Islam, extremist actors will continue to threaten or attempt to harm the leaders, organizers or attendees of the (Koran burning) event," according to an FBI document seen by Reuters. "It may also inspire retaliatory attacks against U.S. facilities overseas," the FBI bulletin said, but it added the agency had no information at that time to indicate that a specific attack had been planned.

"THINK OF US AS CRAZY" The planned event comes near the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and amid heightened tensions in the United States over a proposal to build an Islamic cultural center and mosque near the site of the 2001 World Trade Center attacks in New York. Opponents of the building plan say it is insensitive to families of the victims of the attacks. With anger growing in Afghanistan over the proposed Koran-burning, Afghan police went on alert to guard against more protests. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Kimoon said he was "deeply disturbed" and the Vatican also joined a growing chorus of global criticism. Jones said that despite the worldwide outcry, he had received phone calls of support, including some from serving members in the U.S. armed forces. One of his associate pastors carried a holstered gun.

The pastor's son, Luke Jones, said the church had about 200 Korans to burn -- some sent by supporters, the rest purchased. "We want to confront a religion we believe is leading people to hell ... Think of us as crazy. That's up to you," he said. An imam from a local Florida Muslim group was present during Jones' statement and later entered the church to urge him to call off the event, quoting Bible verses and encouraging him to follow Jesus' teaching of "love your enemy". "I strongly believe at the end of the day he will make the right step and call off the event" Muhammad Musri, head of the Islamic Society for Central Florida, told reporters. In Washington, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said it would announce on Thursday an initiative, called "Learn, Don't Burn", to distribute 200,000 Koran texts to replace the 200 copies that the Florida church plans to burn.

FRINGE GROUP Official criticism of the event intensified. Defense Secretary Robert Gates "strongly endorsed" the view of his military commanders that any Koran-burning plan could endanger U.S. lives. "We hope that the world will appreciate that this is the action of a very small fringe group and does not represent the views of the United States or Americans as a whole," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley. Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay, whose country has nearly 3,000 troops in Afghanistan, also condemned the event. On Tuesday, several high-ranking Obama administration officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, had spoken out against

it, and leading Christian and Jewish leaders also voiced outrage. Sarah Palin, a critic of the planned Islamic center in New York, called on the pastor to stand down on Wednesday. In a Facebook posting, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate called the Koran burning "insensitive and an unnecessary provocation - much like building a mosque at Ground Zero." Authorities in Gainesville say they are tightening security for Saturday's action at Jones' church, which is called the Dove World Outreach Center. Local police say it is believed to have only around 30 members. U.S. officials say that First Amendment constitutional rights guaranteeing freedom of speech, assembly and religion prevent them from prohibiting the event. But local authorities have warned Jones he would violate city ordinances if he went ahead without proper authorization. City officials have denied his request for a burn permit. In Iran, the planned Koran-burning drew protest from a leading cleric. "I along with 1.5 billion Muslims ... condemn this brutal and savage spirit ... I warn about its consequences," Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi-Golpaygani told Iran's Students News Agency ISNA. MIRACLE WORSHIP CENTER

Reverend/Evangelist Maxine A. Johnson

R

everend Maxine A. Johnson is an anointed and radical servant of the most high God. She has a hunger and thirst after righteousness, and her sole mission in ministry is to seek the lost at any cost and getting them to know Jesus Christ. At the age of nine, by the leading of the Holy Spirit, Rev. Johnson accepted Christ as her personal savior. A few years later, at the age of twelve she was asked to preach her first sermon in Jamaica, West Indies which caught many people by surprise, to see the anointing on her life and how God could use a young girl to deliver his Word. Reverend Johnson is a woman of great excellence in every aspect of her life. As a child growing up, she withstood many test and trial which has brought her ministry to where it is today. As a teenager growing up in Jamaica, West Indies, she recognized God’s calling on her life to preach His great gospel. She immediately responded to the call of God, and with a clear sense of purpose and destiny she stepped into that role. With the help of many of the great pastors and ministers of the gospel, she was sheltered and empowered on how to stay focus as a young Christian lady. Since her career in ministry, she has been considered armed and dangerous for the Lord. Reverend Johnson is committed to doing the will of God with great vigor, strength and might. Her entire life is dependent on the leading of the Holy Spirit. With her unique anointing and operation in the five-fold gifts, she has seen God’s words manifested in the lives of His people which many can attest to the working power of God in her life. Her standards are uncompromising and uncommon, which has enabled her to excel and surpass many in ministry. Under the direction of the Holy Spirit, God has used her to perform many miracles. By the power of God through the laying of her hands she have healed thousands from various sickness and diseases such as Cancer, Heart complication and a host of other ailment used to suppress God’s chosen people.

For several years, Reverend Maxine Johnson operated in a leadership capacity for the Ladies Ministry and State Evangelistic Department for the Church of God. In the early stages of her career in ministry, the Church of God played a tremendous role in opening numerous opportunities for networking and recognition. She very soon began travelling across the United States and International preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to all race and gender. Since then, she has co-pastor alongside her husband the Honorable Bishop L.G. Johnson for more than twenty years. Through a vision from the Lord to her husband, the Miracle World Outreach Ministries, Inc. was formed. What began as one local ministry in Jersey City, NJ has now produced more that sixty-seven locations across the United States, Jamaica and India. The Miracle World Outreach Ministries is a registered 501(c) 3 organization which stand on the scripture in Isaiah 58:12 which states, “And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in”. Together Bishop and Reverend Johnson along with their children Karel, Matthew & Lawrence Jr. have laid the foundation and pave the way for the future generations to come. As a family they have worked tirelessly in the ministry to ensure the great command of God is followed. They have a passion for missions and enjoy witnessing to people to advance the Kingdom of God. In November of 2009, Reverend Johnson was applauded for volunteering her services by flying to Kenya, Africa on a mission trip to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the under privileged and needy. While in Kenya she sponsored two people and purchased tons of food to feed the malnourished families. Again in February 2010, she flew into Guyana and Barbados on a mission trip to preach the gospel. While in Guyana and Barbados she preached for the evening worship services and during the day she witnessed

and fed the homeless food on the streets. Reverend Johnson has a heart of compassion for people. She believes in doing whatever it takes to restore the lives of God’s people. While working jointly with her husband Bishop L.G. Johnson, during the month of April in 2003, Reverend Johnson became the Senior Pastor for the Miracle Worship Center in the Bronx, New York. This local ministry began with a total of five people, some of which were not saved at the time. Since then, under her leadership and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, this ministry has grown to over two hundred and fifty in attendance on a Sunday morning and approximately one hundred and sixty five listed as active members. Once again under the direction of the Holy Spirit in 2006, Reverend Johnson felt a need to start another ministry in New Jersey. While answering the call of God, birth was given to the Miracle Faith Center in East Orange, New Jersey where she is also the Senior Pastor. Throughout her career in ministry, she has maintained the roles consistently by the

Both Presidents- Dr. Michael A Frith and Dr. Lebert Malahoomade their presentation of awards and certificates to over seventy graduates. The evening would not be fully accomplished without the inspirational message from the Bishop of the house, Bishop Dr. Michael A Frith. He did not hesitate to challenge the graduates to go out and put things in order. "God is a God of order," stated Bishop and went on further to emphasize that discipline must be implemented in ministries. "For without discipline," he said, "one will never function in the ministry. " The Bishop pointed out to the students that the reason they were there is because God calls them, and not only did He call them to be educated, but to have a bending heart that surrenders to God. He went on further to say that they have an obligation to preach the gospel without compromise. Bishop also told them that the answers are not to be found in the White House or Kings House, but rather in us. The audience was overjoyed by the spiritual upliftment and the general accomplishment of the evening. Dassetta Goodhall Monica Vaughn David Proctor Evang. Back to School

Evangelist Veronica Lyle, The Educator

Well, the 2010 test scores are out, the summer vacation is practically over and the Department of Education won’t change the first day of classes despite several requests from the union and related parties. When New York State released the 2010 test scores at the end of July, it was observed that they were dramatically lower across the board than from the previous year. The state had warned it was raising the proficiency bar this year so a downtrend was expected but the depth of the declines took many by surprise. The average English Language Arts scores went down 26 percentage points with math dropping 28 points. Many educators had to take several deep breaths. This being the case, I am sure that the school year 2010-2011 will usher in many new programs and strategies in an effort to “save” the children. Everyone is of the consensus that the city desperately needs a real instructional strategy to improve our schools. Students are much more than their test scores. In my opinion, the test has become too “narrow,” too “predictable” and too “easy” and they no longer reflect what students need to know and be able to do, to succeed in college.

Harvard’s Professor, Daniel Koretz was commissioned by the state to analyze the test and found statistical evidence that the exam became easier to pass. His team determined that the state had tested kids on too narrow a range of material from 20062009. This finding has created an awful lot of noise in the system. As a result, new supports were created to improve academic experience for children in several schools. The new supports, which start in September, include early intervention programs and small group instruction, a curriculum audit and additional training for teachers of English Language learners and special education. The plans also deal with the needs of new immigrants, homeless students and those re-entering the school system. We therefore anxiously await September 7 to what’s in store for us as educators and more importantly, for the student-improvement plan. As scheduled, schools will reopen September 7 for teachers and September 8 for students since the Department of Education remains unwilling to alter its calendar for the opening day of school, despite an outcry from parents and the UFT. The controversy over opening day began as soon as the DOE designed it 2010-11 calendar. Noting the disruptiveness that a one-day school week would create, the union brought the issue to the Department of Education’s attention and suggested several strategies to avoid the problem. Those ideas were dismissed by school officials, as were all school-based option proposals put forward by school communities that wanted to switch the days. Because of the two days off for Rosh Hashanah on the 9th and 10th of September, one would think that the logical thing to do was to reopen school on September 13 and therefore extend the school year a day longer. Educators who are primarily concerned about student achievement sincerely trust that politics will give way to education this school year.

HEALTH Diet in the Key of Cee

Eating Well Serves Living Well

Claudette (Cee) Josephs, MS, RD

No Co-Pay for Preventive Care: Free – Do we care? Medicaid will soon make it mandatory for its members to choose a managed care health insurance plan. In other words Medicaid is outsourcing its health services. It is a good thing. Many of us who are insured are already in a managed care insurance plan. As part of The Affordable Care Act, a new regulation will require new insurance policies (after Sept. 23, 2010) to cover preventive care, with no cost-sharing from patients (no co-pay, no coinsurance, no de-

ductible). Congressman Charles Rangel in a recent press release applauded the Affordable Care Act saying “Access to quality healthcare is a right that every American deserves…people have to know what they are entitled to, so they can live longer and healthier lives” Although the insurance industry historically did not encourage preventive services, that is now changing. Supported by the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of the Treasury, and the Department of Labor, the premise is that chronic disease such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes can often be prevented if we are screened and counseled before problems occur. Preventing illness or having fewer sick people is positive for everyone, as it can lower the overall cost of healthcare. We will still be responsible for co-pays for non-preventative (treatment and monitoring) visits. However, the list of covered preventive services we get is respectable. Preventive services covered by the new regulation include blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol tests; many cancer screen-

ings, obesity screening, counseling for quitting smoking, losing weight, treating depression and reducing alcohol use; routine vaccines, such as measles and polio, flu and pneumonia shots, many of these conditions that are plaguing our community.

“People don’t value what they perceive as ‘free”. Co-pays, coinsurance and deductibles have been identified as barriers to getting preventive tests and treatment. There are schools of thought that say services that are free (or that seem free to the person receiving them) have less perceived value. However Kristina Shampan’er and Dan Ariely in a study (Social norms and the price of zero. 2006 Working paper, MIT), found that…..the benefit for the now free product increases more than that for the more expensive product, and the net benefit of the cheaper product becomes higher. What they are saying is the exact opposite. So will we see that eating right, following the laws of nature and getting regular

check-ups is the key to a longer, healthier life? Surely we can see these benefits as a gift, an opportunity, a duty to achieve better health. And when we speak about health, are we not talking about eating well? Most of these medical conditions mentioned above are generally a consequence of poor dietary habits. U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, MD, addressing AMA members touched on the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles for Americans, saying she hoped to change the “national conversation about being healthy and fit.” The best way I can assist you is to educate you. Dietitians have been in this business [for ever]. A registered dietitian and advocate for improved health care, Claudette (Cee) Josephs provides medical nutrition therapy, education and cooking instructions to the HIV and substance abuse community, and makes nutrition and health presentations largely to the African Diaspora. As singer/songwriter, she is dedicated to freeing the world through the truth of the gospel. www.dietinthekeyofcee.wordpress.com

Are You SAD: A Closer Look at Seasonal Affective Disorder

By: Sophia Mattis, MD, MHSA Many people will experience feelings of sadness or depression as the summer comes to an end. Moms and dads often find themselves overwhelmed and in a frenzy as they prepare for the upcoming school season, while children may experience feelings of anxiety as they anticipate what the school year holds in store. Overall, burnout tends to be the ultimate result. Can we just say, “Mental fatigue?” Or maybe that’s not it at all. Maybe it’s a geographical thing. For those who reside in a state with changing season, they will say it’s because the winter is approaching and there will be no more fun in the sun. While those who live in the tropics may say it’s all because the school and work season is starting and it’s back to the grind for them. Either way, more often than not, people on a whole tend to suffer from feelings of depression as the fall season approaches. Why is this so? Are you just a receptor for melancholy, a summer junkie or could it be that you’re suffering with SAD- Seasonal Affective Disorder? Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a cyclical type of depression which means that signs and symptoms present and regress at the same time each and every year. SAD

H

is classified as a subtype of depression or bipolar disorder and as a result of this your health care provider may find it difficult to come up with a proper diagnosis. Most people will experience feelings of depression, decreased energy, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, hopelessness, anxiety, social withdrawal, oversleeping, appetite changes with an increased craving for foods high in carbohydrates, weight gain, inability to concentrate and moodiness generally starting in late fall and peaking in the winter months. The signs and symptoms associated with fall and winter SAD tend to disappear with the appearance of those sunny warmer days. It’s important to note that although the general pattern of this disorder is to appear in the fall and peak in the winter, there are cases which can appear in the spring or the early summer which present with signs and symptoms opposite of those of winter SAD. Some of the symptoms of spring and summer SAD are: anxiety, weight loss, increase sex drive, irritability, agitation, insomnia and poor appetite. Both start out mild and gradually worsen as the season progresses. As you can see, both patterns are independent with their symptoms and onset, but are identical in their pattern of progression. There are certain criteria which must be met in order to diagnose SAD. According to the DSM-Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a patient must meet the following: 1) Experience depression along with other symptoms for 2 consecutive years occurring at the same time each year 2) The periods of depression have been followed by depression free periods and 3) There are no other explanations for the

N

A

T

O

N

changes in mood or behavior. What causes this disorder? Studies have shown that there are alterations in ones circadian rhythm/biological clock, melatonin and serotonin levels. Reduced sunlight can affect 1) your body’s internal clock affecting your sleep pattern 2) your emotional state as serotonin is responsible for your mood, as well as 3) both your mood and your internal clock as melatonin regulates both. Studies have also noted certain commonalities associated with those persons who are affected by SAD. Living far from the equator has a direct correlation with those sufferers of SAD. Apparently, the further one lives from the equator the higher their chances are of suffering from SAD. Too far north or south of the equator results in decreased exposure to sunlight during the winter and longer days in the summer. Women are diagnosed more often than men, but oddly enough men may have more drastic symptoms. Could it be because women tend to seek medical attention earlier and more often than men and this is why women are diagnosed more often than men? While on the flip side, could it be because men wait for awhile prior to seeking medical attention that they are diagnosed later in the stage of the disorder at which time they would have been experiencing the brunt of the disorder? Regardless of who is suffering at a higher rate or at a more severe rate, the fact remains that both men and women suffer from this disorder and usually both have a family history tied in. So what are some possible treatment regimes? Traditional treatments include: phototherapy (light therapy), antidepressants in severe cases and although

W

I

D

E

G

SAD is not thought to be a behavioral disorder, the use of psychotherapy may be beneficial- teaching patients how to change negative thoughts and behaviors. Although many alternative treatments have not been approved by the FDA, many have been beneficial in some cases. Such things like: yoga, acupuncture, meditation, massage therapy, consuming Omega-3 fatty acid-found in fish (salmon, mackerel, and herring) walnuts and canola oil, St. Johns Wart and Rhodiola have all been used by SAD sufferers. However, prior to using any of these substances, with the exception of fish and nuts, please consult with your care provider as some of the listed substances may interfere with other medications you may be taking or an ailment you may currently have. To date there is no definitive preventative medical treatment for SAD. To help make your condition more tolerable, you may want to consider seeking early treatment prior to the onset of the disorder and continuing treatment beyond the expected time when the disorder usually ceases. Such steps have been helpful in alleviating the harsh effects of this often overlooked depressive disorder. When all is said and done please don’t forget to take your spiritual medicine-the scripture- “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” ~ Psalms 118:24 So until we meet again, be blessed always and may God be your guide as angels walk by your side. The Work Of The Church In The Field Of Education God gave these four young men wisdom and the ability to learn. They learned many kinds of things people have written and studied. Daniel could also understand all kinds of visions and dreams." Daniel 1:17 (TNV) Written by Maizie Vassell

From the beginning of time, God created man with the capacity to increase in wisdom, knowledge and understanding and the church has played a pivotal role in the development of the human mind through education, in an effort to meet the needs and challenges of our ever-changing global community. One such church is the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Island, that initiated the International University of the Caribbean (IUC), in 2005. Educational Consultant Dr. Adlyn White cuts the ribbon at the launch of the International University of the Caribbean in 2005. Joining in are President of IUC Rev. Dr. Maitland Evans, Former G.G and Chancellor, Sir Howard Cooke and Vice President, Dr. Elvris Hewitt Buckle. IUC, though conceived in 2005, has evolved from over 200 years of engagement in the delivery of quality Secondary Education and comprises of two entities which enhance the University with "a rich history of

educational innovation, high academic and research standards and a commitment to community engagement." The establishment of the Institute for Theological and Leadership Development, an entity of IUC, was founded in 1989. When compared to other institutions in Jamaica and other Caribbean Countries, ITLD has earned "the distinction of graduating the largest number of Guidance Counselors’." It has a history of responding to the diverse needs of society which is a fulfillment of the dreams of its founders. The second entity of IUC is the Mel Nathan College (MNC), the arm of the Mel Nathan Institute, and was started in 2004 as a community training institute in Jamaica's inner city and is the founder of Mel Nathan Prep, a leading preparatory school in Jamaica. The Mission Statement of IUC as quoted is, "Co-creators of a more excellent way to lifelong learning, educational empowerment,

prosperity, peace and wholeness." Today IUC offers twelve exciting undergraduate programs:- Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in Community Development, Guidance and Counseling, Theology, Media and Communications, Psychology, General Studies, Human Resource Management, Primary Education, Hospitality Management and Program and Project Management. It also offers Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Business Administration and Nursing. Not only does it offer undergraduate programs, but also postgraduate and doctoral programs:- Master of Education (M.Ed) in Educational Studies, Master of Science (M.Sc) in Environmental Studies and Counseling and Consulting Psychology; Master of Arts (MA) in Counseling Psychology and Transformational Leadership. The Doctoral programs are Doctor of Pastorial Psychology, Doctor of Applied Psychology and Doctor of Theology. The President, Rev. Dr. Maitland Evans, a former General Secretary of the

United Church stated, "The International University of the Caribbean (IUC), is a different kind of University." He highlighted three distinct differences: 1.IUC sought to give new meaning to the concept of learning by doing, in that, all the programs carry a practicum component. 2.IUC builds on the learners experience and emphasizes the value of life long learning. 3.IUC believes in ensuring that students wrestle with a concern that has specific context and strategic dimensions. IUC has strong international linkage and offers a number of partnerships with institutions in Canada, USA and the United Kingdom. In a recent visit to Jamaica in June 2010, Rev. Douglas Gooden, Chairman and CEO of Gooden Gospel Ministries, met in Kingston, Jamaica, with the President Rev. Dr. Maitland and professors of IUC, to discuss the future of the university. Plans for its expansion and development were discussed with great enthusiasm and optimism. .......Continued on page 29

Invitation de Jésus.

Gesner Noel, Pasteur. Matt 11:28. Gooden and has expressed heart felt gratitude for sharing the dream and enthusiasm for the development of IUC.

Rev. Jésus lui a seulement dit “suis-mois”. Amen. Gesner Noel, Pasteur.
