S T U D I OWORKS DONELSON STATION TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

SOLUTION I established guiding principles to protect the development’s social, economic, and environmental values, while creating design metrics to ensure the project’s feasibility. This project provides 30 dwelling units per acre, 500,000 sq. ft. of retail, 1.4 million sq. ft. of office, 1 million sq. ft. of civic & open space, an FAR over 2, and over 8,500 parking spaces.

SKILLS ACQUIRED

• Urban Design Master Planning • TOD Planning • F.A.R. Calculations • Parking Calculations • Digital Representation: AutoCAD, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator

PROJECT OBJECTIVE DONELSON, TN SPRING 2013

With my thesis I applied the principles of transit-oriented development to the Donelson community, in order to ease the social, economic and environmental problems created by sprawl. Doing so provided the opportunity to establish an identifiable center for Donelson.

S T U D I OWORKS OAK RIDGE OLD TOWN SITE MASTER PLAN

OAK RIDGE, TN FALL 2012

TEAM: TROY GARDNER + WILL COPEL AND

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

SOLUTION

Respond to the low density growth pattern of the region and develop a master plan for Oak Ridge that pursues the mitigation of sprawl while concurrently establishing a memorable and identifiable ‘place’.

Working as a team we proposed a high density, walkable, transit friendly, mixed-use master plan for Oak Ridge. By increasing the density we were able to incorporate an extensive green network which will provide environmental, economic, and social benefi ts. The green network also serves as a unifying agent to the distinct areas of the site.

S T U D I OWORKS JACKSON SQUARE DETAILED PLAN

PROJECT OBJECTIVE Develop a detailed design for an area within the Oak Ridge Master Plan. The detailed design also showcases the site’s unique qualities and visualizes the new identity of the ‘place’ as proposed in the master plan.

SOLUTION This design brings the ridge and valley formation of the region into the revitalization of Jackson Square. The linear paving pattern and chickamauga limestone seating wall symbolize these regional features at the user level. This community space boasts an amphitheater, farmer’s market, and channels the green network.

RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD OBSERVATORY

SEVEN ISLANDS WILDLIFE REFUGE KNOXVILLE, TN SPRING 2012

This project challenged me to convey landscape as both scenery and a dynamic process, by condensing the unique qualities of the landscape and intensifying them in perception. Further, the project was to reveal a natural process and a method by which to observe changes in the process over time.

SOLUTION

SKILLS ACQUIRED

I designed a partially submerged bird hide with observation portals and accommodations for an observer to sleep, eat, and bathe. The observatory allows the user to experience the daily activity of red-winged black birds at Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge.

EMORILAND COMMUNITY PARK

KNOXVILLE, TN SPRING 2011

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

SOLUTION

SKILLS ACQUIRED

This one acre site lies along Broadway and First Creek near Fountain City. Formerly a Pizza Hut, it was razed by the city to alleviate flooding. I was asked to design this space as a neighborhood entry park and specify plantings. All the while remaining aware of the site’s flooding tendencies.

The park is bordered by evergreen plantings & a pavilion was proposed for community gatherings. Interior rhododendrons & viburnums partially screen the park while allowing views outward. Along the creek bank a small corridor has been provided to accommodate for future expansion of the Knoxville Greenway.
