Letter From The Desk of Chris Park Dear Bobcat Club Members, As our staff looked back at the 2011-2012 Bobcat Club fiscal year we couldn’t have been prouder of the wonderful gains made in athletic fundraising and the support of our tremendous donors. First, a big thank you goes out to all of our donors for helping the Bobcat Club raise a record amount of dollars this year for student athlete scholarships through our annual fund. Our donors also stepped up and helped set records in regards to fundraising in the following areas: • •

Selling out each statewide luncheon event (Houston, San Marcos, and Austin) Raising a record number of dollars at the Bobcat Bonanza for student athlete scholarships

We continue to see tremendous gains in donor support during our current 2012-2013 year Bobcat Club annual fund drive. To date we have hit the following percentage increase in comparison to where we stood this time last year: • •

146% increase in dollars raised to date 103% increase in number of donors to date

Other notable accomplishments in the first couple of months in our new fundraising year include a sold out Champions Club Level heading into this football season, along with a newly established waiting list for suites at Bobcat Stadium and at Bobcat Baseball Stadium. By now many of you have renewed your Bobcat Club Membership for the upcoming season, and for that we say Thank You! If you have not, please take the time to reach out via phone or to go online and renew your support of student athlete scholarships at Texas State. Another valuable way you can help support our department is recruiting friends, family, and other alumni to become Bobcat Club donors as well as season ticket holders. Although we have made significant gains in membership and dollars raised to the Bobcat Club we still have aggressive goals to reach which include the following for this year: • •

1500 donors (53% of the way there) $750,000 raised for scholarships (75% raised to date)

Finally, it is great to reflect on all of the wonderful times spent interacting with so many different Bobcat Club members at all of the different social functions this past athletic year. From the Sac-N-Pac room on game days, to luncheons, to halftime in the Maroon & Gold room it is always such a joy to spend time with our members who care so much about Texas State and its athletics program. We look forward to another outstanding year of Bobcat Athletics and the wonderful times ahead. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office if you ever have any questions regarding your gift. See you in the stands, Chris Park

Move to the Sunbelt

Texas State University President Denise Trauth and Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson announced that Texas State has accepted an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference as an all-sports member beginning in 2013-14. “Texas State University has worked very hard to be ready for FBS competition and joining the Sun Belt Conference represents a new opportunity for our future,” said Dr. Trauth. “The Sun Belt Conference’s record of competitive success over more than 35 years provides a tradition of excellence that we are happy to join. Our students and alumni will bring a very strong fan base that will welcome these new opportunities. Just as Texas State is the rising star of Texas, we believe that the Sun Belt Conference is also on the rise and we are happy to be a part of its future.” “Texas State is a great addition to the Sun Belt Conference as the Bobcat athletic program is destined for success in the Football Bowl Subdivision,” said Commissioner Benson. “The Sun Belt Conference’s rise to prominence will continue with Texas State as part of our league.” With the move, Texas State joins current Sun Belt Conference members Arkansas State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, UL-Lafayette, UL-Monroe, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, South Alabama, Troy and Western Kentucky. In addition, Georgia State also will join the conference in 2013.

Move to the Sunbelt Cont’d “We are very excited about becoming a member of the Sun Belt Conference in 2013,” said Texas State Athletic Director Larry Teis. “We know that our student-athletes will be eager to succeed in the Sun Belt, and we will enter the conference ready to compete. We look forward to building new rivalries with some Sun Belt schools and renewing rivalries with others. The Sun Belt Conference encompasses eight states from Texas to Florida that are rich in college athletic traditions, especially in the sport of FBS football.” Founded in 1899, Texas State has an enrollment of more than 34,000 students and sponsors 16 men’s and women’s athletic teams. The Bobcats will compete in the Western Athletic Conference during the 2012-13 academic year and play their first home football game against Texas Tech on Sept. 8. In preparation for Texas State’s jump to the Football Bowl Subdivision, Bobcat Stadium will have an increased seating capacity of 30,000 with the addition of a North End Zone Complex. Since 2000, the Bobcats have won 46 Southland Conference championships, including the 2005 and 2008 football titles. Texas State advanced to the 2005 FCS semifinals and appeared in the 2008 FCS playoffs, while Bobcat volleyball, soccer, women’s golf, baseball and softball teams have appeared in the NCAA Tournament during the last two seasons.

Baseball Season Recap The Bobcats began the season strong with a 14-6 record through the team’s first 20 games, the second best 20-game start to a season since Harrington took over in 2000. The start helped catapult Texas State up to No. 20 in the Baseball America rankings, the highest since the program began in 1985, and No. 30 in the Collegiate Baseball poll. Partially responsible for the strong start was the Bobcat pitching staff, which set program records and made a run at a longtime NCAA record. Texas State hurlers did not allow a run over 57 2/3 consecutive innings, a streak spanning seven games from Feb. 25 to March 6. The Bobcats set the team record for scoreless innings and consecutive shutouts (5) and came up just 6 1/3 innings shy of the NCAA record of 64 consecutive scoreless innings set in 1972 by Arizona State. The streak began in the fourth inning of a game versus Houston and ended with one out in the eighth inning against No. 4 Rice on March 6 with an RBI single by J.T. Chargois. The streak included a pair of wins over Houston, a win against No. 18 TCU, a series sweep of Notre Dame and a victory over No. 4 Rice.

As a team, Texas State set a program record for ERA as Bobcat pitchers combined for a 3.02 ERA that bettered the 3.73 mark set by the 2011 pitching staff. Texas State pitchers also had 462 strikeouts collectively, the third most in a single season for the Bobcats.

In addition to team records, several individual records were set by Bobcats in 2012. Senior Tyler Sibley etched his name on the top of six more career records and now owns seven following his standout four-year career. Sibley set records for hits, doubles, stolen bases, games played, at-bats and total bases to go along with his runs scored record that he set in 2011. Another record set in 2012 was for attendance at Bobcat Ballpark with an average of 1,287 fans per game. That number ranked 48th in the nation, while the total attendance of 37,329 for the season ranked 46th nationally. The Bobcats’ win over No. 4 Rice was one of six wins the team had against ranked opponents during the season. Texas State also defeated preseason No. 37-ranked Wichita State along with No. 18/No. 19 TCU twice and No. 16 Oregon twice. Texas State completed its conference schedule with a 19-14 record in its final season in the Southland Conference, earning the Bobcats the No. 3 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament hosted at Bobcat Ballpark. The postseason appearance was the 16th consecutive for the Bobcats, while the team’s winning record in conference extended Harrington’s streak of consecutive seasons with a winning conference record to all 13 years he has been at the helm. The Bobcats won their opening game of the SLC Tournament, an 11-1 triumph over No. 6 seed Stephen F. Austin, but that would be the only victory of the tournament for Texas State as No. 2 seed Southeastern Louisiana defeated the Bobcats on the second day before SFA came back to avenge its earlier loss with a 9-7 win that ended Texas State’s season with a 32-24 overall record.

Mark and Linda Smith Donation

Texas State Athletics received a generous gift of $250,000 from entrepreneurs and owners of AquaLand Development, Mark and Linda Smith, for the construction of a new ticket office inside the North Side Complex at Bobcat Stadium.

Bobcat Stadium is currently under renovation to add 14,000 seats as well as restrooms, concession stands, novelty stands and an apparel store. The North End Zone Complex will also include the main tickets office and a state of the art Linda Gregg Fields Strutters Gallery. After completion, the stadium capacity will be 30,000 for when Texas State plays host to Texas Tech on September 8, 2012. “Mark is prime example of a Texas State alum who has been away from campus for years and is now getting back involved in helping us see our vision through,” Texas State athletic director Larry Teis said. “Gifts of this size truly make an impact in the lives of our student-athletes and continue to help us prepare for the future. We are so thankful for Mark and Linda’s commitment to our program.” “We are extremely excited about the opportunity to help support Texas State University and the move to the FBS,” Mark Smith said. “This university has meant so much to us over the years and has made a large impact on my life. We are very fortunate to be in a position to give back and would like to thank Jerry and Linda Fields for helping us reconnect with Texas State Athletics. This means a lot to Linda and me.” University President Denise Trauth said, “Texas State’s move into the ranks of FBS universities is a source of great pride for our alumni, and Mark and Linda’s generous gift provides concrete evidence of Bobcat Pride. We appreciate their vote of confidence in the Bobcat athletics program and Texas State.” Through 50 combined years of experience, Austin-based AquaLand Development has established relationships with clients who have helped branch into the acquisition and development of land in South and Central Texas, including the Development of the Lakeway Medical Center. AquaLand Development is also active in the construction of 26 single-family homes in Eagle Ford Shale and working towards transforming the historic Lone Star Brewery in Downtown San Antonio into a multi-family/mixed-use development. The project will restore the grand Artesian Spring fed pool, revive the famous beer garden and bring the feel and ambiance back to the once fabled site.

Leadership Council Member Spotlight The Bobcat Club took a few minutes to catch up with Fritz Cox, an active member of the Leadership Council and a 3rd generation Texas State Bobcat. Tell us about yourself and how you got involved with the Leadership Council and the Bobcat Club. I received a scholarship to play football in 1989 for the Bobcats. At the time we were told we would be D-1 by the time we graduated. So, you could say I have been waiting 23 years for this. When I found out, the excitement was overwhelming and I started trying to get all my friends involved because tailgating and football is so much more fun as a group. Chris Park and Travis Comer took notice and asked me if I would be interested and without even thinking about it, I said “Yes!” What are some main focuses of the Leadership Council? My main focus on the leadership council has been educating my fellow Bobcats what it takes to build a winning program and keep a winning coaching staff. First and foremost it takes money. If you don’t have the money in place then you can’t get the recruits and once you get the recruits you won’t be able to keep the coaches. It all goes together and the donors are both the chicken and the egg. What is your favorite part of Bobcat Athletics? I love being around my old coaches (Fran, Schultz, Hud & Gish), seeing my old teammates and classmates and watching the program grow as people get excited about what is happening at our great university. Heading into football season, what game are you most looking forward to? All of them! I was amazed at how much fun last year was with the big crowds and tailgating the last year in FCS. If last year was fun in FCS, I can only imagine how much fun this year is going to be in FBS. Most of all my 6 and 9 year old boys love the Bobcats and can’t wait to see some football. How has Texas State changed since you were in school here? What remains the same? It seems like it is quickly becoming the University we always knew it could be. My dad took me to the games during the national championship years and it had a very specific feeling. When Coach Fran came in ’90 the excitement came back and then again in ’05 when Coach Bailiff took us to the semis. The feeling of the Bobcats winning and how bad our faithful want this is the same, that and the general feeling of San Marcos… going to Grin’s, Herbert’s, Palmer’s and floating the river, which my boys love. There are some new places I love that fit right in with the old that make me love coming here like Zelick’s and Chimy’s. Do you have any additional comments on the continuing growth and expansion of our University, specifically in our Athletics? Come back and check it out, it brings back great memories and creates new ones with your family. Our University is going to go long and far and you are going to want to be a part of it. Who knows your kids may want to go here and have what you had. I sure hope mine do… Go Bobcats!

2012 MLB Draft With 5 players being selected, Texas State had five players drafted in the MLB draft for the second consecutive season. Jeff McVaney, Louis Head, Colton Turner, Travis Ballew and Casey Kalenkosky all have the opportunity to play at the next level if they so choose. In total, the Bobcats have now had 45 players drafted all-time, including 30 since head coach Ty Harrington took over the baseball program in 2000. “I think it shows the kind of athletes we have been able to recruit here,” Harrington said. “It shows the development that our guys go through at Texas State because none of them had been drafted before coming here. This has been part of all of their goals when they chose to come to Texas State, so we’re proud of those guys.” Senior Jeff McVaney heard his name called on day two of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft as the Detroit Tigers picked the Texas State outfielder with the 274th overall selection. McVaney was the first Bobcat chosen in this year’s draft. McVaney was selected in the eighth round byDetroit, making it four consecutive years that Texas State has had a player picked within the top 10 rounds of the draft (2009: Paul Goldschmidt, Round 8 & Ben Theriot, Round 9; 2010: Jason Martinson, Round 5; 2011: Kyle Kubitza, Round 3 & Carson Smith, Round 8).

Jeff McVaney

Head heard his name called as the first Bobcat chosen on the third day when the Cleveland Indians picked the right-handed pitcher in the 18th round as the 563rd overall selection. The junior finished 2012 season strong, pitching in pivotal situations down the stretch for the Bobcats. Head tallied a 2-2 record, 4.20 ERA and three saves primarily coming out of the bullpen. He also made two starts for Texas State and struck out 25 batters over 30 total innings on the mound. Turner, an All-Southland Conference Second Team selection, was next off the board when the Toronto Blue Jays picked the left-handed pitcher in the 21st round and the 655th overall selection. Turner capped off his junior season with a 5-3 overall record and 2.46 ERA on the mound, the best ERA for qualified starts on the Texas State staff. He allowed just one home run the entire season and struck out 87 batters in 87 2/3 innings on the mound. Colton Turner Ballew, the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year and all-American selection, then went to the Houston Astros with the first pick of the 23rd round and 699th overall. The right hander finished his breakout 2012 campaign with an 11-4 overall record and 2.73 ERA. He struck out a team-high 119 batters in 102 1/3 innings, while holding opponents to just a .239 batting average collectively. Ballew also had four complete games, two of which were shutouts, during his third season with the Bobcats. Kalenkosky, an All-Southland Conference Third Team selection, heard his named called for the second straight season in the draft. This time around, the Bobcat first baseman was picked in the 30th round (929th overall) by the Atlanta Braves – the same team that picked former Bobcat Kyle Kubitza in the third round a season ago. Kalenkosky capped off his second and final season this year with the Bobcats with a team-high 10 home runs to go along with a .266 batting average, 41 RBIs and 34 runs scored. The senior also led the team with four triples and 28 bases on balls. Casey Kalenkosky

Drs. Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields Donation

Longtime philanthropists Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields have committed $1.1 million to Texas State University’s Athletics Department for the 2012-13 academic year. “Jerry and Linda have been with us through a lot of special times and they have assured me they will continue to support our FBS goals,” Teis said. “Not many universities can say they have a Jerry and Linda Fields.” “Once again, Jerry and Linda Fields have shown their faith in Texas State Athletics and in the University as a whole in a very tangible way,” University President Denise Trauth said “They have helped pave the way for a new era in Bobcat Athletics.” In all, the couple has given more than $11.7 million to the University to fund an array of activities, including scholarship funds, endowed chairs, athletics facilities and programs. On May 2, University officials announced Texas State would join the Sun Belt Conference in 2013-14. The move will follow a year of competition in the Western Athletic Conference beginning next fall. “We are ecstatic about the move to the Sun Belt Conference and I hope this recent gift helps to reinforce that emotion,” Jerry Fields said. “My wife and I have been with this process from the beginning, and we would gladly go through the progression again to see our Bobcats land in a league with a solid FBS foundation. We are very excited about watching our Bobcats compete and win championships at the FBS level.” The Fieldses designated $100,000 of their most recent gift to the Bobcat Club, which funds scholarships for student-athletes. The $100,000 gift is the largest single gift ever received during one year by the Bobcat Club, which is made up of Texas State alumni, fans, former student-athletes, coaches and friends. “Linda and I feel that it is important to support the Bobcat Club and student-athlete scholarships as part of our move to the NCAA Division I FBS,” Fields said. “Supporting the Bobcat Club and purchasing season tickets are ways that every alumnus, fan and supporter can get behind this move and ensure Texas State’s success at the next level. With our announcement that Texas State is joining the Sun Belt Conference, we believe that it is imperative that donations and ticket sales continue to increase to validate our success at the FBS level.”

Softball Season Recap The Texas State softball team finished the 2011-12 season with a 39-17 record and a trip to the NCAA College Station Regional. The Bobcats had a season-long win streak of 13 games which they carried into the postseason

The Bobcats competed in four tournaments to start the season. First was the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State, followed by the Bobcats home tourney, the CenturyLink Classic. Texas State then participated in the Texas Shootout hosted by Baylor, in which they came away with the tournament crown after beating No. 9 Baylor, Texas Tech, UTEP and North Texas. The Bobcats took second at the Texas A&M Invitational, where they beat No. 24 Nebraska twice and Houston twice. Texas State would soon enter Southland Conference play where it started off 8-1. The Bobcats were able to sweep conference opponents at home, 10-0, as they went on to finish 18-2 and claim the regular season crown. Texas State racked up quite a few conference honors and leading the way was senior pitcher Chandler Hall, who was named the league player and pitcher of the year. The Bobcats had six players selected to all-conference teams. Hall earned first team honors. Named to the second team were Anne Marie Taylor, Anna Hernandez, Haley Lemons and Brooke Baker. Selena Hernandez was voted to the third team.

The highlight reel of the Bobcats’ no-hitter was showed again later that night in an intro leading up to the selection show that was aired on ESPNU, and then again the following day when it was selected as ESPNW’s fourth-best play of the week. As the Bobcats won their second straight SLC Tournament crown, five players were named to the all-tournament team: Hall, A. Hernandez, Baker, Coralee Ramirez and Shelby Carnline. Hall was also named the most valuable player. Texas State put up an amazing effort versus LSU in the first game of the regional, but fell 1-0 to the Tigers, despite having a no-hitter going into the seventh inning. The Bobcats bounced back to beat Bethune-Cookman, 5-3, in game two to set up a meeting versus Texas A&M. Texas State took an early 2-0 lead on the Aggies, but the home team battled back to come away with a 7-4 victory as the Bobcats’ season came to an end. For their outstanding performance in the NCAA College Station Regional, Hall and S. Hernandez were voted to the all-region team. Hall was also selected to the NFCA All-Central Region second team. She is the only player in Texas State history to earn all-region honors four times.

Texas State said goodbye to its senior class of Chandler Hall, Megan Parten and Allison Snow. The trio won three Southland Conference Championships and three SLC Tournament Championships during their Bobcat career. The overall record for the Bobcats during their four-year stint was 141-79 (.641). It was the best winning percentage by a senior class since 2004.

Woodard was also selected the College Sports Madness SLC Coach of the Year, while Hall was named the CSM Southland Pitcher of the Year. Although Texas State made a solid case for an at-large bid into the 2012 NCAA Softball Regional, it was not needed. The Bobcats went 3-0 in the SLC Tournament, capped by a no-hitter by Hall to earn Texas State the No. 3 slot on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 plays of the day.

DJ Hall Signs with Jaguars Former Texas State standout offensive lineman D.J. Hall signed as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars following the 2012 NFL Draft this past March. Hall received a call from the Jaguars 15 minutes after the Draft was completed on Saturday, March 24 and reported to Jacksonville later that week.

“Dallas and the Texans also contacted me, but we felt my best opportunity was to sign with Jacksonville,” said Hall. “It was an exciting and surreal moment for me. It is a life-long dream that has come true.” Hall signed to play both guard and center for the Jaguars after starting 47 consecutive games at right guard for the Bobcats. A two-time FCS All-American guard for the Bobcats, Hall was chosen as one of the Top 10 FCS offensive linemen by The Sports Network in 2010 and 2011. As a senior, Hall was chosen a Second-Team All-American by The Sports Network and a Third-Team All-American by Phil Steele after totaling 7705 knockdown blocks, having seven blocks 10 or more yards down the field. Hall graded out at 88 percent or better in seven games in 2011. In his junior campaign, he earned Third-Team All-American honors by the Associated Press and Fourth-Team honors by Phil Steele. Hall was also named a FCS All-Independent selection last season after earning All-Southland Conference honors three times. He also served as a team captain and earned Texas State’s John O’Hara Memorial Offensive Lineman of the Year award for each the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Hall also earned a bachelor’s degree in business management at Texas State last December.
