The first great decline in CO2 coincided with the evolution of woody plants and spread of great forests across the Earth.

No decomposer species was able to digest lignin so dead trees piled up a hundred or more metres deep.

During the Carboniferous Period the great coal deposits were laid down.

Coal formation virtually ended when fungi evolved enzymes that could digest lignin.

CO2 recovered somewhat as fungi digested wood that was exposed to oxygen
